Nat King Cole recorded a version of the song in 1961, and the 1962 “Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova” instrumental version was the only version of the song to rise significantly on the charts. Frank Sinatra didn’t record a version of the song until 1964. Quincy Jones did the arrangement for this version of the song and changed the timing to give it a more swing feel. The song is played over the end credits of Clint Eastwood’s movie “Space Cowboys” released in 2000. • “Fly Me To The Moon” was also the title of a 2008 animated feature about three junior space exploring flies who stow away aboard the Apollo 11 mission inside the helmets of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. The film includes the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry, Kelly Ripa and Buzz Aldrin. There is also a cameo by Aldrin at the end of the film after the credits. turn the page for more! ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A seemingly stalled romantic situation could benefit from your reassurance that you want this relationship to work. And if you do, use a tad more of that irresistible Aries charm.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Going to new places and meeting new people appeals to both the Taurean’s romantic and practical side. After all, you never can tell where those new contacts can take you. Right?

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That career-change opportunity that didn’t work out when you first considered it could come up again. But this time, remember that you have more to offer and should act accordingly.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There could be some tensions in relationships -- domestic or workaday. But a calm approach that doesn’t raise the anger levels and a frank discussion soon will resolve the problem.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good idea to begin preparing for that career change you’ve been thinking about for a while. Start to sharpen your skills and expand your background to be ready when it calls.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Bless that Virgo skepticism that has kept you from falling into traps others seem to rush into. But you might want to give a new possibility the benefit of the doubt, at least on a trial basis.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Traveling and career are strong in your aspect. Perhaps your job will take you to someplace exotic. Or you might be setting up meetings with potential clients or employers. Whatever it is, good luck.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone might use deception to try to push you into making a decision you’re not fully comfortable with. But those keen Scorpio sens-es should keep you alert to any such attempt.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Romance dominates this week when Cupid spears the Archer, for a change. Positive things also are happening in the workplace. Expect important news to arrive by the week’s end.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Anyone trying to bully the Sea Goat -- whether it involves a personal or a professional matter -- will learn a painful lesson. Others will also benefit from the Goat’s strong example.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. With things going the way they are, you should be able to spare some time and take a break from your hectic sched-ule for some well-earned fun and games.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sharp Piscean intuition should be able to uncover the true agendas of those who might be trying to catch the Fish in one of their schemes.

BORN THIS WEEK: Your flair for innovative art and design keeps you at least a step ahead of most everyone else.

Gleason famously portrayed Ralph Kramden in the series. But did you know his real name was Herbert Walton Gleason Jr.? Gleason made famous the catchphrase “Bang! Zoom!” and threatened to send his wife Alice “right to the moon!” The comedic shtick has been parodied by modern comedies, including “Family Guy.” Did you know there is a vintage clothing line in Roscoe, New York, called “Right To The Moon Alice”?

• BuzzAldrin isknown formany things.Hewasthe second man to walk on the moon, and he has dedicated his life to promoting space exploration. 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, and to commemorate the event, Aldrin teamed up with Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones to make “The Rocket Experience,” his rap debut and single. Proceeds from the song go to ShareSpace, a non-profit organization founded by Buzz in1998.

•AfewmorelesserknownfactsaboutAldrin:It’sstrange but true; Buzz’s mother, Marion Aldrin, was named Marion Moon before she married! Buzz Lightyear, from the animated classic “Toy Story,” was named for Aldrin. One more for the record books: Buzz was born Edwin Eugene AldrinJr.butofficiallychangedhisnametoBuzzin 1988. The moniker came from his older sister who pronounced the word brother as “buzzer.”

•DoesMareTranquillitatismeananythingtoyou? If you took a Latin class, you know that it means Sea of Tranquility. However, if you’re a space buff, you might know that it is the landing sight of the Apollo 11 lunar module. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their famous steps in the Mare

HOT TUB OWNERSReduce Your Chemical Use by at Least 69%

Aquafinesse is a revolution in hot water care. Yes, you’ve heard that before and we appreciate your skepticism. However, until now, everything you have added to your hot tub was intended to “treat” problems that Biofilm and Scale create. Well Aquafinesse does not “treat” these problems; it eliminates them and prevents them from returning. The technology behind Aquafinesse acts like a wallpaper stripper removing Biofilm and Scale from your hot tub. Aquafinesse then creates a teflon-like barrier that does not allow these contaminants to return. By eliminating the causes of fouled water Aquafinesse helps maintain water balance and increase sanitizer effectiveness. A simple, once a week treatment with our non-toxic, non-corrosive technology and your water looks, feels and smells amazing.

OVER THE MOON (continued):Tranquillitatis, making it a famous landmark

in American history on July 20, 1969.• Can you see the Sea of Tranquility from

earth? You sure can! The sea, if you hadn’t guessed, isn’t actually a sea but a maria, which is one of the many dark spots we see on the surface of earth’s moon. It’s location will look different depending on which portion of the world you’re in, so be sure to look it up in your local library or favorite search engine.

•Rabbitorman?Thisdependswhereyou’refrom. Many Asian cultures believe the dark marias on the surface of the moon form the shape of a rabbit. There was a time in England when the shapes were believed to be an old witch carrying a bundle of sticks on her back. Some Muslim cultures believe the name of Muhammed’s son is written on themoon, asAliwould be there to reflectthe teachings of Muhammed (the sun) after Muhammed was gone. There is even a part of South East India that believes the face of still-living guru Sathya Sai Baba can be seen in the maria. What do you see?

DON’T GET WET! (continued):

• The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

• If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

• While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

• If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

• Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!

Several years ago, a frightening incident inspired automotive safety specialist Christina Selter to found BarkBuckleUP, a program that promotes pet safety.“We had a near-accident with our dogs in the car. (We were) only traveling about 2 mph from a stop sign, when a car ran a red light and our little Betty fell off the seat. (She) wasn’t hurt, but didn’t want to be on the seat or in the car. It took some time to get her confidentagain.”Selter, who has an SAE (Society of Automotive Engi-neers)certification,createdBarkBuckleUPtoremindowners to restrain their pets properly in the car, using safety belts specially designed for pets. She travels the U.S. throughout the year, promoting the message andworkingwithpoliceandfiredepartmentstosup-port the safety program. BarkBuckleUP also focuses on other safety issues, and Selter wants pet owners to stay aware. May is National Water Safety Month, and she reminds own-ers to keep a close eye on their pets while playing near or in the water. While explaining that most dogs love water, she

warns, “Dogs get tired just like us. They need to take breaks.”Dogs also should wear a pet life vest when on the water with owners -- in a boat or other watercraft, for example. To keep dogs healthy, wash them off after they’ve finishedtheirswim.“AfewyearsagoinCaliforniaat a pet event, there was a huge breakout of hot spots (on dogs) after going into the ocean,” Selter says. “Clean their fur thoroughly and their feet. Clean them off every time.”The BarkBuckleUP website (www.BarkBuckleUP.com) features safety products for pets, including restraints for dogs and for pet carriers, life vests, first-aidkits,andmore.

Here’s a great, decorative way to absorb excess odor in damp spaces (like bathrooms or basements). Wrap a plastic container with pretty shelf paper and

add charcoal briquettes or kitty litter to the box. Place a lid on top with holes poked in it. It will ab-

sorb the moisture. Check it periodically and replace the contents.

“To get rid of the smell of burned food in the micro-wave, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to 4 cups of water in a microwave-safe glass bowl. I use a mea-suring cup. Microwave on high until boiling, about four minutes. Let it set in the microwave for a few

minutes and then remove carefully. You also can boil the mixture on the stove, and it will make the room

smell fresh.” -- R.F. in Indiana

with food.

It was Pulitzer Prize-winning American author John Steinbeck, best known for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men,” who made the following sage observation: “The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most im-portant thing in the world. And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true.”

If you’ve never heard of the quagga, don’t blame yourself. The creature, once found on the plains of Africa, has been extinct since 1883. An odd-looking creature, this subspecies of zebra was once thought to be half-zebra, half horse. Though the front part of its body had the zebra’s stripes, those stripes faded out mid-body and the rest of the equine looked remarkably like a common horse.

We all know that the day after Thanksgiving is com-monly known as Black Friday, thanks to all the crowds seeking out deals on Christmas gifts, but have you ever wondered how it got that name? It seems that the mon-iker originated back in 1965 when the Philadelphia police department came up with the name after hav-ingtodealwiththetrafficjamsandshoppingcrowds.

OVER THE MOON (continued):•Dr. Eugene Shoemaker was a well-known

astronomer and astrogeologist in his lifetime. At one point, he was considered as a candidate for an Apollo lunar mission. He also co-discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. However, Dr. Shoemaker is also notably the only human being whose mortal remains have been laid to rest on the moon. A capsule containing his ashes was sent to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector on July 31, 1999.

•Do you know what a wolf moon is? Or aharvest or ice moon? These names refer to specificfullmoonsintheyear.Awolfmoonis a full moon that occurs during the month of January, whereas a harvest moon occurs during the month of September. These names originated with the Native American tribes of North America, who named the moons to keep track of the seasons.

• In “More English Fairy Tales” by JosephJacobs, there is a tale called The Dead Moon (or The Buried Moon) about the moon. While struggling, her hood kept falling in front of her face, causing her light to flicker.Apassingmansawtheflashinglightinthe distance and it warned him of the bog and the monsters. Because she was trapped in a bog and not in the sky, the moon stopped rising for a long time. The people wondered what had happened to her. It was a wise woman who told thepeoplewheretofindtheburiedmoon, andat the wise woman’s advice, the people freed the moon.

EDITOR’S NOTE: New DVDs reviewed in this col-umn will be available in stores the week of May 11, 2010.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Daria: The Complete Animated Series” (Unrated) -- “Smart and funny” aren’t two adjectives you nor-mally associate with MTV programming, but “Dar-ia” is one of the few exceptions. Debuting in 1997 as a spin-off of the popular “Beavis & Butt-Head,” “Daria” centered on the life of sardonic teenager Daria Morgendorffer, as she and her bestie Jane skewer pop culture and try to avoid the popular kids at their upper-middle-class high school. The DVD includes all five seasons of the show, plus the pilot episode and both made-for-TV mov-ies. Special features include interviews with the cast and crew, two Mystik Spiral music videos, Daria Day intros and a Top Ten Video Countdown hosted by Daria and Jane.

“Toy Story”/”Toy Story 2” (Special Editions) (Rated G) -- Coinciding with this year’s release of “Toy Story 3,” Disney/Pixar are re-releasing the first two classic adventures featuring Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Slinky Dog, Rex and all the rest. There

are no new special features on these editions (except for some “Toy Story 3” marketing stuff), so if you already own the films, there’s no need to rush out and grab these.I have a copy of the now-discontinued three-disc “Ultimate Toybox” DVD set, which includes both films and a third disc packed with special features. What I’m hoping is that Disney will do a similar release for the holidays that will include all three films and perhaps a fourth disc of fea-tures. So yeah, wait a while. I’ll bet that’s what’ll happen.

“M” (The Criterion Collection) Blu-ray (Unrated) -- Iconic director Fritz Lang’s chilling story of the hunt for a child murderer finally gets the high-def, Criterion Collection treatment. Peter Lorre stars as “M,” the child-killer who is so expert at eluding the police that the criminal underworld takes it upon themselves to hunt down the psy-chotic monster. Two versions of the film are included in this

edition: The original German production and the long-lost English-language version. Both have been restored using a hi-def digital transfer process. Among the tons of special features are: audio commentary by German film scholars Anton Kaes and Eric Rentschler, a one-hour conversa-tion with Fritz Lang by “Exorcist” author William Friedkin, a commemorative booklet and a 1963 interview with Lang.

DOG OF THE WEEK“Legion” (Rated R) -- If you were suckered by the trailers for “Legion,” you probably went in think-ing it was going to be a tongue-in-cheek horror comedy, a la “Drag Me To Hell.” Sadly, it wasn’t. In-stead, “Legion” is a mindless, CGI poopfest about Angels and Demons slugging it out at a remote diner because some pregnant chick might be car-rying the messiah. Knock-knock. Who’s there? Armageddon. Armageddon who? Armageddon outta here and goin’ to watch a better movie.

Presents:• There’s another study out comparing seniors with younger age groups. This time the research was on social dilemmas and conflicts, and predicting how they would turn out -- in other words, wisdom.• Researchers broke participants into three age groups: 25-39, 40-59 and 60-plus. Subjects then read fake newspaper articles about different types of in-terpersonal conflict. Then they were asked questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” Later, the participants were called back for more tests. This time they read letters from an advice columnist and were asked questions such as, “What do you think should be done?”• The results were broken into wisdom-related cat-egories, such as searching for compromise, recog-nizing change, taking into account the perspective of others and searching for a resolution.• The researchers worked blind when they tabulated the results: They didn’t know the subject’s age group.• So what did this study show? It proves what we already knew, that we seniors are able to take infor-mation we’ve accumulated over a lifetime and make wise decisions, especially when it comes to conflicts. We’re better able than our younger counterparts to compromise, admit it when we just don’t know some-thing, take into consideration the viewpoints of oth-ers and make accurate predictions about how situa-tions will turn out.• So, what do we do with our wisdom, now that it’s been acknowledged? A few ideas come to mind: …Act as mediators for divorcing couples or squab-bling families. …Work with groups of schoolchildren, the younger the better, on understanding the viewpoint of others. …Work as advisers to young couples with un-healthy spending patterns, or in culture conflict reso-lution in companies.• While some of us already work in roles such as these, what we really need now is for more “wisdom” positions to be developed.

OVER THE MOON (continued): He was a hero and a Trojan prince. Ganymede

the moon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, exactly 400 years ago this past January 10th. One more neat fact: Did you know that the redgianthas63confirmedmoonsinall?

•What exactly is a bluemoon?Every calendaryear, there are approximately twelve full moons, but because the moon cycles every 28 days and doesn’tfit intoourmonthlypattern, every2.7years there is an extra, thirteenth full moon in the year - a blue moon. So, the saying “once in a blue moon” really does mean something that doesn’t happen very often as a blue moon only happens about every 2.7 years. The next blue moon will occur this year on November 21, 2010, but the next one won’t be until August 21, 2013.

• It’sofficial!AsofSeptember2009,waterwasdiscovered on the moon. But don’t rush to get yourbathingsuitsforthefirstswimmingpoolon the moon; our satellite is still drier than any dessert on earth. However, it has been discovered that there are very small traces of water on the moon, and that is an advancement for the ages.

AMERICAN IDOL (continued): Speaking of first season favorites, we can’t

talk about Justin without talking about winner Kelly Clarkson. After her win on Season One of “American Idol,” Clarkson sky rocketed to super stardom and is still releasing hit singles. Her most recent album, “All I Ever Wanted” (2009) is the fourth of her albums to date. Clarkson appeared with Guarini in 2003’s “From Justin to Kelly “and has also had acting roles in television’s “American Dreams” and “Reba.” The 27 year old isn’t slowing down, either. She has won two Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards and four American Music Awards and has continued touring for her “All I Ever Wanted” tour since the beginning of the year. What’s next for Clarkson? We’ll have

towaitandsee, butwe’resureIdol’sfirstwinnerwill continue to wow us with her career.

•Another Idol alumni who rose quickly tostardom was Season Four winner Carrie Underwood. An Oklahoma native, Underwood releasedherfirstalbumjustoneshortyearaftershe won Idol back in 2004. She was one of the biggest debuts in country music in recent years, and her albums have continuously produced hit singles on both country and pop charts. Underwood has won four Grammy Awards, 14AmericanMusicAwardsandfiveBillboardMusic Awards and just from the release of three albums! Looks like Miss Underwood has many things yet to show us, too!

• ThestateofAlabamahasplayedakeyroleinproducing some “American Idol” favorites, included Season Five winner Taylor Hicks. Hicks isn’t the only Alabama native to gain attention through the show. Season Two brought the world’s attention to the big, cuddly teddy bear Ruben Studdard, a Birmingham native. Ruben was followed by Diana

DeGarmo in 2004 and Taylor Hicks in 2006, both also Birmingham natives. There was also Huntsville’s, Bo Bice in 2005. Studdard and Hicks were the only two Alabama natives to win the show, although DeGarmo and Bice were both runners-up in their respective seasons.

• ThesixthseasonbroughtaroundJordinSparks,a smiling girl who rose to fame when she won “American Idol” in 2007. Sparks, a Phoenix, Arizona, native, is the daughter of former NFL quarterback Phillippi Sparks. To date, Sparks is the youngest winner of American Idol; she was 17 when she won. Something you might not know about Sparks, she actually auditioned twice for the show. She was also the opening act for the Jonas Brothers in the North American section of their 2009 World Tour.
