Whenthefluidbuildsupandthepressurerisesinsidethe eye, it can harm the optic nerve, resulting in eye pain, blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision, and potential blindness. There is no cure, and the damage cannot be reversed. Although anyone can develop glaucoma, people over 60 are more prone to it, particularly African-Americans and Latinos. Those with high blood pressure are also at an increased risk.

This observance is in honor of the comic duo Laurel and Hardy. This was more than double the wages of most of the workers. Henry Ford hoped this action would help reduce his company’s high turnover rate, while retaining the best employees, a goal that was achieved.• January is National Hot Tea Month! Did youknow that tea is the world’s second most popular and cheapest beverage (after water)? Every day about three billion cups of tea are consumed around the world. In America, it can be found in 80% of house-

holds,andanestimated127millionAmericansaredrinking it on any given day. Most of that tea comes from India, the world’s largest tea producer, process-ing about 850,000 tons each year. More tea drinkers sip black tea than any other type, 90% of total tea con-sumption. Although black, oolong, green, and white teas all come from the same shrub, black tea is more oxidized than theother three. The inventionof thetea bag came about by accident. In 1904, a New York tea importer was looking for a cheaper way to send samples to customers. Thomas Sullivan had been us-ing tin boxes, but as this proved expensive, he be-gan wrapping the tea in small silk bas. His customers didn’trealizethatthebagswerejustpackaging, andbrewed their tea in them. Soon after, Sullivan was receiving orders for the new product. Today, 96% of the world brews its tea using a tea bag. The average cup of black tea contains between 40 and 120 mg. of caffeine, with green tea total 60 mg., depending on how long the bag is steeped. • OnJanuary19,1937,HowardHugheswentintothe record books with the fastest flight from LosAngeles toNewYorkCity.Heflewthe2,490-mile(4,000-km)distancein7hours,28minutes,and25seconds, with an average speed of 332 mph (535 km/h)inhisHughesH-1racer.Thisflightbrokehisown previous record of 9 hours, 26 minutes, and 10 seconds.

feathers trap a layer of warm air next to their skin that serves as insulation. Some species have four layers of feathers to keep them warm in the cold waters. Every year, penguins undergo molting, when all their old feathers are replaced by new ones. Most birds molt a few feathers at a time, but penguins do it all at once,

Q: I remember you said that “Secrets and Lies” would be back for another season. Can you tell me anything about it? -- Janet T., via email

A: The detective whodunit drama starring Juliette Lewis

will return to ABC this spring for a 10-episode second season. Although an exact airdate had not been released as of this writing, I’ll be looking for it around late-February/early March. This season focuses on Eric Warner (played by Michael Ealy), who is the heir apparent to his family’s

private-equity firm inChar-lotte, North Carolina. Newly married, Eric is attending a party to honor his dad passing over the reins to him when his wife, Kate Warner (Jordana Brewster), is found dead, and life, as he knows it, is over.

Overseeing the case is Det. Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis). She immediately puts the grieving husband in her crosshairs, but as always, secrets seep out about this

seemingly perfect family, which turns their world upside down. Also starring are Terry O’Quinn (“Lost,” “Hawaii Five-O”),MekiaCox (“CrazyStupidLove”),CharlieBarnett (“Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.”) and Kenny Johnson (“The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy”).

•••Q: Can you tell me what Alexander Skarsgard has

coming up? -- Lilly T., Austin, TexasA: On July 1, you can see Alexander on the big screen

in“TheLegendofTarzan,”aretellingoftheEdgarRiceBurroughs character we all know and love. The movie isdirectedbyDavidYates, whodirectedthefinalfour“Harry Potter” movies, so audiences can expect won-derful special effects alongside excellent drama and storytelling.

This version of the iconic tale begins 10 years after Lord Greystoke, John Clayton III, leaves the jungle. He’s living in 1880s Victorian London, and of course, he is married to Jane (Margo Robbie). Clayton is invited back to the Congo as a special emissary, and he and Jane soon findthemselvesindangerouswaters, withClaytonhavingto revisit his jungle and vine-swinging skills to get them out of the Congo alive.

David Yates told “USA Today” that Sweden-born Alexander was perfect for the role of the modern-day Tarzan because “he has thiswonderful quality of notquitebelongingtoone[country]ortheother....Tarzanneeds muscles, but it’s more a leaner, longer, more vertical modern man than the square-jawed stereotype we’re used

March, and it also stars Tara Buck and Joe Manganiello.

So far the plot has been pretty hush-hush, but you can count on adventure, intelligent humor hidden behind silly antics and a sense of deja vu that’ll happily take you back to your childhood.

When there were no more sheep, they had to feed their children to the beast. The chil-dren were chosen by lottery, and one day the lot fell on the King’s daughter. Cook by the BookIf you’re determined to eat health-

ier this year, but you’re feeling a little baffled about what to cook, I’ve got the remedy. I’ve fallen in love with several new cookbooks that will introduce you to new cuisines and ingenious cooking methods to make life easier and healthier in 2016!

When exploring your cookbook, save time and money by selecting reci-pes that use similar ingre-dients. You’ll be able to stick with a healthy eat-ing plan if you map out recipes to prepare for one or two weeks at a time, and stock up on the ingre-dients. Here are two of my favorite cookbooks:

The Perfect Egg: A Fresh Take on Recipes for Morning, Noon and Night by Teri Lynn Fisher and Jenny Park.

Eggs are the perfect protein if you’re trying to eat healthy on a budget. The authors have com-piled a fresh take on classic recipes and comfort foods that are “egg-cel-lent” choices for any meal.

“The Perfect Egg” recipes are a far cry from using hard-boiled eggs as diet food. The book explores every aspect of eggs in the chapter Egg Basics 101. The authors also provide in-depth insight on the history of egg cultivation and consumption, crack open the story about egg anatomy and types, and unscramble the mystery of the grading system. There also are several tips and techniques for bak-ing, boiling, coddling, frying, poach-ing, scrambling, steaming, preserving and pickling eggs. I chose to share the recipe for famous Greek Avgolemono Soup, which is simple to make and

could be a lunch or dinner dish.

AVGOLEMONO SOUP 4 cups chicken stock 1/4 cup whole wheat-orzo pasta 1 egg 2 egg yolks Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon, plus more for garnish 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1. Bring the stock to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add orzo and cook 6 to 8 min-utes or until tender but not mushy. Meanwhile, whisk together the egg and yolks, 1 teaspoon of the lemon zest and juice, the salt and the pepper in a bowl until foamy and pale yellow.

2. While stirring constantly, careful-ly pour 1/2 cup of the hot stock into

the egg mixture to temper the eggs and keep them from curdling. Lower heat to medium-low. While stirring constantly, pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan containing the orzo.

3. Simmer, stirring frequently, for 8-10 minutes or until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Taste, adjust seasoning and serve in warm bowls sprinkled with lemon zest, if desired. Serves 2 to 3.

Genius Recipes: 100 Recipes That Will Change the Way You Cook by Kristen Milgore, executive editor at Food52.com.

The title says it all! “Genius Recipes” contains unique recipes

from cookbook authors, chefs and bloggers. I suggest reading it first with a stack of bookmarks. The sim-ple tricks, shortcuts and inventive new ways to prepare familiar recipes will completely transform the way you cook.

I love this cookbook so much that it was difficult to choose just one recipe. This is my variation of the one for Chicken Thighs with Lemon. The book’s cooking method crisps the skin, and the lemon and garlic creates a simple sauce using the ren-dered chicken fat that is absolutely delicious!

CHICKEN THIGHS WITH LEMON

1½ tablespoons olive oil 8 (bone-in, skin-on) chicken thighs 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1½ teaspoons fresh lemon zest 1 garlic clove, finely minced Lemon wedges for serving

1. Rinse thighs and pat dry with paper towels. Season with the poul-try seasoning, salt and pepper. Place olive oil in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. Place chicken in the skillet skin-side down. Cook chick-en, without moving the pieces, for 15 to 30 minutes or until the fat has rendered out and the skin is golden brown and crisp. Adjust the heat to low if the skin is cooking too fast to prevent burning.

2. Turn the thighs over and continue to cook for another 7 minutes. Stir the lemon zest and the garlic into the fat and cook for another 7 or 8 minutes or until meat next to the bone is cooked through. Serve with lemon wedges.

It’s the end of the year and we, as sports fans, know what that means: It’s time to take a look back at the great plays and the playerswhomadethem, lestweforget.Thisweekweprofiletwoinstant legends from the hard court and the rink.

Basketball: Stephen CurryHow good is Stephen Curry? So good that visiting markets

broadcast his warm-up routine. So good that he put Davidson Collegeonthemap(atleastintheory)andgaveOaklanditsfirstbasketball championship in four decades. So good that Mark Jackson, a former NBA All-Star and coach (including Curry’s), openly fretted that “he’s ruining the game” of basketball.

Yes, you read that right. Kim Kardashian breaks the Internet, children break toys, and Stephen Curry breaks basketball. How does he do it?

Curry is 6 feet, 3 inches -- not a giant by any means -- so he knew from the start of his career that he was not going to rely on his physicality to dominate on the inside, nor was he going to spend a large amount of time above the rim. What Curry was able to do was watch his father, Dell Curry, a former NBA star in his own right, and learn how to practice, practice, practice his jump shot, his three-pointer, his passing. That was something he could control.

It’s paid off in record-smashing ways ... in fact, he is in a league of his own. His record 286 three-pointers in 2015 surpassed the oldmarkof272,setbyStephenCurryhimselfin2013.

Hands down the league MVP in 2015 and The Associated Press Athlete of the Year, Curry has become the smiling, family-oriented face of the league. The only scary thing about Curry is that he is improving at a record pace. This season he is averaging more than 30 points per game ... a full seven points higher than his championship-winning MVP season. No full-time NBA player has everimprovedthatmuchinoneseason,andat27yearsold,it’ssafe to say that the best is yet to come for young Master Curry.

Hockey: Casey PriceIt’s the age-old quandary: Would you rather have strong starting

pitching or bleacher-blasting home-run hitters on your roster? A superstar quarterback and receiving corps to match, or a sack-happydefensivelinewithshutdowncorners?Aprolificgoalscoreror a brick wall of a backstop in front of the net?

Luckilyforus, theNHLhasthisstuffallfiguredout.Theyhavethis thing called the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the most valuable player to his team. Last year, the league decided that Montreal goalie Carey Price was such a guy. He buried Capitals wingerAlexanderOvechkininfirst-placevotes(139-8)andledthe league in wins, goals against average and save percentage -- a feat not equaled since Ed Belfour did it in 1991. Price set the Canadians’ record for wins in a season (44, also the NHL season best), not bad considering that the Canadians have a tiny bit of history and lore surrounding the franchise.

There’s no joke to be made here; picking Price was not wrong. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

A: There are three comic references I consult on a regular basis: “Golden Age Comics” by AlexG.MalloyandStuartW.WellsIII(KrauseBooks);“OfficialOverstreetComicBookPriceGuide” by Robert W. Overstreet (House of Collectibles); and “Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide” by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff and Peter Bickford (Krause Books). A: Although I have several guidebooks for this type of pottery, my personal favorite is “Warman’s McCoy Pottery,” 2nd edition, by Mark F. Moran and published by KP Books. Your strawberry cookie jar was crafted during the 1950s and is valued in the $80 to $100 range, per Moran. It sounds like you made an excellent buy.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Tonight our dear guinea pig “Sparks” had a heart attack and left us within a couple of hours. There was no chance to take her to an emergency vet. Is tension in the house a cause of heart attack in guinea pigs? Is there anything we could have done to prevent this? -- Yamile, via email

DEAR YAMILE: I’m sorry to hear of Sparks’ death. I’ll try to offer some explanation why, and I encourage my readers to send their advice as well.

Heart attack (and stroke) are, sadly, very common causes of sudden death in guinea pigs, a.k.a. cavies. Cavies are very sensitive to their environment, par-ticularly changes in temperature. Being unable to rest peacefully also causes stress that affects their system. In short, cavies love a comfortable routine and a rest area sheltered from light and noise.

Deficiencies in diet also can be a factor. This can get tricky, so speaking with other cavy ownersorvetswhospecializeinthemcanhelpdeducewhetheracavyneedsa specific typeoffeed or supplement (too much can be as bad as too little).

Because it’s often hard to detect illness in ca-vies until they suddenly decline, you should learn abitof“cavyfirstaid.”Oneimportantstepwhenacavytakesillistocontactthevetbyphonefirst

and describe the symptoms. Sometimes a cavy is too ill to safely be transported. The vet might tell you to make your pet comfortable and wait out a very long night -- not because he or she doesn’t care, but because the added stress in moving the cavy could be fatal.

Send your questions or tips to [email protected].
