This week, Tidbits features a variety of items that start with to- and go-. • Tobacco contributes to more than 400,000 deaths in the United States every year. That’s almost 20 percent of all U.S. deaths! About 23 percent of adult Americans smoke, and 30 percent of adolescents. A person who hasn’t used tobacco by the time he is 21 is quite likely to remain a non-smoker. Around the globe, about 10 million cigarettes are purchased each minute of every day. • Halfway between Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts, stood an old house, built in 1709 as a toll-collecting station, stable and inn for weary travelers. In 1930, along came Ken and Ruth Wakefield, who purchased the house and opened a lodge, naming it the Toll House Inn. Ruth provided many delicious meals for her guests, as well as tempting baked goods. While mixing up a batch of her favorite cookie recipe, as an experiment, she added a chopped chocolate bar. It was so well- liked, she continued the practice, and the treat became quite popular throughout the area. So popular, it soon became known as the Toll House cookie, a name that endures today. turn the page for more! Q. What happens when frogs park illegally? A. They get toad. July 5, 2011 Issue 1

• What’s the fastest healing part of your body? It’s your tongue! It’s also the strongest muscle group and the most fl exible. About 3,000 taste buds make their home on the tongue. The av-erage length of a tongue is 4 inches (10 cm). • Back in second-century Rome, only Roman citizens were allowed to wear the toga. Before a boy reached legal age, he wore a white toga with a border of a wide purple stripe. At his “coming of age” ceremony, usually around age 14 or 15, he donned, for the fi rst time, a plain white toga. This was known as the toga virilis. • At age 33, J.R.R. Tolkien became a pro-fessor in the English Department at the Univer-sity of Oxford. Always interested in languages, he actually invented several “artifi cial” lan-guages, two of which, “Quenya” and “Sinda-rin,” he used in his novels. • Toponymy is the study of place names. When something takes its name from a certain place, it’s known as a toponym. Well-known examples include the Oxford shirt taking its name from Oxford, England, and hamburgers being named for their city of origin, Hamburg, Germany. The province of Ontario gets its name from Lake On-tario, not the other way around. Did you know that the tuxedo takes its name from Tuxedo Park, New York? Years later, he published a novel he had written for his children, entitled “The Hobbit.” His pub-lishers convinced him to write a sequel, and the result was the three-volume work, “The Lord of the Rings,” an effort that required nearly 10 years. It was published in 1954 and 1955. Tolk-ien continued as professor at Oxford until 1959.

Taking the Mystery Out of Credit Scores

FICO, short for Fair Isaac Corporation, was found-ed in 1956 by a mathematician and an engineer who were interested in the analysis of numbers -- including credit scores. Their work gave credi-tors a means of predicting which customers are more or less likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you're treated by creditors:1. A high credit scores equates to a lower anticipated rate of default.2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates

they offer you based on your likely risk of default.3. The higher your credit score, the better the deal you'll get on interest and the more money you're likely to save over time. The front screen of the MyFico.com website gives a perfect example of potential savings: "A 100-point difference in your FICO score could mean over $40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan."FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are based payment history, length of credit history, new cred-it you might open, amount of established credit and the types of credit. A mix of credit types -- per-haps vehicle, mortgage, credit card -- will yield a better score than all credit cards or vehicle only. With all the lender emphasis on credit worthi-ness, a simple late payment can damage your cred-it score. The later it is, the more damage is done. Here's an additional credit fact: Unfair though it is, the higher your credit score, the bigger the "ding" to your

credit if you do miss payments. Here is a comparison of late payment and bankruptcy at two levels of credit score and the length of time for the score to rise again:Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 600-620, but can rise again in nine months. A score of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it could take three years for the score to rise again.Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 530-550, and could take five years to rise again. A score of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it could take seven to 10 years for the score to rise again. For more information on keeping your credit score healthy, visit MyFico.com.

• Hansen’s impressive journey, dubbed the “Man in Motion World Tour,” began in March of 1985 in Vancouver. His trek covered 34 countries on four continents, a distance of more than 24,850 miles (40,000 km). It was 26 months before he pulled back into Vancou-

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:RICK HANSEN

British Columbian Rick Hansen had a dream — to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. But his life took a turn that he ever could have imagined. Read on to see how Hansen triumphed over ad-versity by following his motto: “If you believe in a dream and have the courage to try, great things can be accomplished. Anything is possible.” • As a high school student, Hansen was a natural athlete and had excelled in fi ve sports, winning all-star awards in each one. In his free time, he was an avid fi sherman. One simple de-cision after a fi shing trip changed his life. He and his best friend hitchhiked home, taking a ride in the back of a pickup truck. On a winding road, the driver swerved, skidded and went off the road, and the two teens were thrown out of the truck. The friend walked away from the crash, while Hansen received a spinal cord injury, and

at age 15, was paralyzed from the waist down.

• Hansen spent seven months in rehabilitation in Vancouver, B.C., and after high school gradu-ation, enrolled at the University of British Co-lumbia. There he became the fi rst disabled stu-dent to receive a degree in physical education. It was at the university that Hansen met another disabled athlete, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer. Fox had an ambitious plan to run across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox’s cancer returned, and he was forced to halt his mission. But Hansen was so inspired by Fox’s courage, he made plans to circle the world in his wheelchair to raise money and awareness for spinal cord injuries.

ver, having raised $26 million for his cause.

• Yet the Man in Motion tour is only one of his incredible achievements. Hansen has been the victor in 19 international wheelchair marathons. He is a wheelchair volleyball and basketball national champ and winner of six Paralympic medals. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Hansen was selected as the torch-bearer to bring the fl ame into the stadium.

• Hansen continues his work as an advo-cate for those with spinal cord injuries. He serves as president and CEO of the Rick Han-sen Foundation, which has raised upwards of $200 million for this important cause. He has co-authored two books, one about his Man in Motion adventure, and another entitled “Go-ing the Distance: 7 Steps to Personal Change.”

• As an in-demand motivational speaker, Hansen particularly enjoys making a difference in the lives of young people. Along this line, he has served as a high school basketball and volleyball coach. Throughout his adversity, he has main-tained that “a shattered spine is not a shattered spirit,” and in his words, “Courage is being able to recognize and overcome fear or act in the face of danger, and to do so with dignity and integrity.”

SISTER ACT“Yessir, mister, she’s my sister!” Here we present some details about some fa-mous female siblings, past and present. • You’re probably not familiar with the names of Jayne and Joan Boyd, but more than likely, you’ve seen their faces. They were the original “Double your pleasure, double your fun” Wrig-ley’s gum Doublemint Twins. The girls began their Wrigley’s advertising stint in 1959 at age 21, a job they held until 1963. “People would stop and talk to us… grandmothers, small chil-dren, they all knew us,” said the twins. You can still occasionally spot the girls’ faces on some of Wrigley’s new ads, which highlight past twins. • Baby boomers might remember the names of Nan and Flossie from the girls’ 75-year his-tory in children’s novels. These two sisters each had a twin brother — 12-year-old Nan was twins with Bert, and 6-year-old Flossie’s brother was Freddie. Together the four, known as the Bobbsey Twins, enjoyed many adven

What’s on Your Plate?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been trying to help us eat healthier for a very long ti me.

Back in 1943, we had “The Basic Seven” -- seven categories of food we needed to eat on a daily basis. Serving sizes weren’t included.

In 1956, the USDA switched to “The Basic Four,” and in 1979 to the “Hassle-Free Guide to a Bett er Diet.” It added a new food category with fats, sweets and alcohol. In 1984, we got the “Food Wheel: A Patt ern for Daily Food Choices.” This one included serving sizes.

Eight years later, in 1992, the “Food Guide Pyramid” came along with those ti ny pictures of food. In 2005 we got the MyPyramid Food Guidance System, which was supposed to be a simplifi ed pyramid.

Now, in an eff ort to keep us all eati ng correctly, we have “MyPlate.” The icon is cute: a plate divided into four unequal secti ons, with a fork on the left and a circle above the plate for “Dairy.”

All this work, and I sti ll didn’t know how much the USDA intends for me to eat.

On the website [www.choosemyplate.gov] I clicked on the Get a Personalized Plan link and entered my age, weight, height and level of exercise. It came back with a diet plan for me, including informati on such as “Make at least half your grains whole grains,” “Vary your veggies” and “Focus on fruit” with specifi c ti ps on how to do that.

While the “Plate” is a bit silly, as was the Pyramid, the informati on behind it is solid. Check the USDA website and see what it has to say.

You know, of course, that an entrepreneur somewhere is busily creati ng MyPlate plates with the appropriate secti ons all outlined for us.

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B.

ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-to-the-side vision remains. You won’t go completely blind.Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It’s the more common variety, accounting for 90 percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fl uid. It tends to advance more rapidly.Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper appears to slow moderate macular degeneration’s progression to a more advanced

Macular Degeneration Progress Can be Slowed

stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation.Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defi nes lutein’s place and its optimum dose. The booklet on macular degeneration explains this prevalent eye problem in great detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 701W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please tell me about post-traumatic stress disorder. I think someone in my family suffers from it. -- A.F.ANSWER: Having faced an event that threatened life or caused serious injury is the basis for post-traumatic stress disorder. The event keeps resurfacing in the mind with a clarity that imparts terror and helplessness, and sometimes guilt. The remembrance can happen during the day or in dreams. An affected person stays in the alert mode at all times. He or she loses interest in life, neglects those around him or her, suffers from fragmented sleep, often erupts in outbursts of anger and is usually quite depressed. Soldiers, fi remen, policemen and those who suffered a sexual or physical attack are people who most often develop PTSD. With the combination of talk treatment and medicines, these people can usually regain their equilibrium and resume a normal

• The Dionne family of Callander, Ontario, already had six children when they welcomed the world’s fi rst living quintuplets in 1934. Five girls — Emilie, Cecile, Yvonne, Annette and Marie — weighed in at a total of 14 pounds (6.35 kg.). When the girls were just a year old, they were removed from their home by the government of Ontario when their father agreed to accept money for their appearance at the Chicago World’s Fair. They were featured in advertisements for every-thing from dolls to dishwashing liquid to war bonds, creating millions of dollars in revenue for the province of Ontario. The quints’ earnings were placed in a trust fund controlled by the govern-ment, which was misappropriated, leaving them in fi nancial straits in their later years. During the 1990s, the three remaining quints were living to-gether on $750 a month and approached the Ca-nadian government for a settlement. In 1998, they were awarded a $4 million tax-free remuneration by Canadian offi cials. Emilie, who became a nun, died of an epileptic seizure at age 20, while Marie perished in 1970 and Yvonne in 2001. • Amidst gently fl oating bubbles and between Geri-tol and Aqua Velva commercials, the four Lennon sisters, Dianne, Janet, Peggy and Kathy crooned syrupy ballads to the audience of “The Lawrence Welk Show.” With their matching chiffon dresses and stiff bouffant hairdos, the California-born sis-ters appeared with the Champagne Music Makers from 1955 until 1967. The girls got their lucky break when Welk’s son began dating Dianne and informed his father of the girls’ potential.
