TIDBITS® IS TALKING TWINS AND SEEING DOUBLE by Sarah Bates We’re seeing double (and maybe a little more) this week as we seek out some titillating Tidbits on some of the world’s rarest and most unique multiple births! Even if you’re a singleton, don’t feel blue - enjoy these twinbits as you expand your brain! • Any set of multiples starts the same way that a singleton birth does: an egg. The difference comes at the time of fertilization - from here several things can happen. Identical twins occur when two fetuses develop from one zygote, meaning one fertilized egg splits in two. This is called monozygotic twinning. • Dizygotic twinning, or fraternal, occurs when two fetuses develop from two zygotes, meaning there are two separate eggs and fertilization. • Polyzygotic births occur when multiple fetuses develop from one or more zygotes. You could have three fetuses develop from one zygote, getting rare identical triplets, or three fetuses develop from two zygotes, getting two identical babies and one fraternal, or you could have three fetuses develop from three different zygotes, etc. The list goes on and on. • There is also such a thing as semi-identical twins, which doctors say is when two sperm fertilize one egg, which then splits into two. However, this is very rare with only one known case so far. turn the page for more!

TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON

INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

Winterizing Programs save on Heating CostsWinter weatherizing programs offer a low-cost or free way to make fixes to your home that can add up to large savings on heating fuel. Here are some ways to find help:

• Call your local social services for referrals to programs. Even if you don’t get any services from them, they’ll know how to contact county or state programs or can refer you to classes you can take. Contact your utility or fuel company. Often it will do free “leak checks” to help you identify problems in your home.

• If the area where you live is even slightly rural, consider calling Rural Development, a U.S. Department of Agriculture program. If your weatherizing goals are serious enough to fall under the category of actual repairs, you might qualify for a low-interest loan or grant. To contact Rural Development and get the number for your state branch, call 1-800-670-6553.

• The Department of Energy has a weatherizing help program that’s run through individual states. Go to www.energy.gov and click on General Information, then Weatherization Assistance Program. In the left column you’ll see a link to State Contacts. If you qualify as low income, you’ll receive a whole-house energy efficiency audit as a first step, as well as a safety check.

Whether you sign up for help through a program or do the work yourself, the mains goals are to keep cold air out. At the very minimum: Use a caulking gun to seal around windows. Check your hardware store for shrinkable clear plastic sheets that go on the inside of windows. Those sheets can do more than you might think to keep cold air from coming through the glass. At the height of winter there could be a 20-degree difference in temperature on the window side of the plastic -- cold air that isn’t making it into the room.

With cooler weather, especially at night, you’ll be able to tell if you have air leaks at exterior doors. Just take off your shoes and check for cold air down at floor level. Invest in weather stripping around the doors if you feel a draft. Also check wall electrical plugs to see if cold air is blowing in. Invest in plug inserts, or buy the gasket kits that block the whole wall plug.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

SEEING DOUBLE (continued):• How often do twins occur? Well, since the invention of fertility treatments,

the rate has increased dramatically. About 3.21 in every 100 births results in twinning, over a 70% increase since 1980. About 1.5 in every 1,000 births results in multiple births of triples or higher. Monozygotic twins occur in one out of every three twinning instances.

• Some identical twins will not look alike and some fraternal twins will, which doctors and scientists suggest stems from stress in the womb to other outside factors throughout the twins lives. Child stars Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are fraternal twins, though they look strikingly similar.

• There is a Nigerian tribe that holds the world’s record for most twin births in one region. Forty-five births in every 1,000 births in the Yoruba tribe results in fraternal twins. Doctors speculate this might have to do with the Yoruba’s diet - they eat a specific type of yam that may cause increased ovulation.

• Cryptophasia is the term used to describe twin talk between identical twins. Those who study such things believe that some identical twins form their own language, often made up of mispronounced words and gestures developed as the children learn to talk. While there is not enough scientific evidence to fully prove this, it is believed that children who do use their own language will most likely grow out of it as they enter school and interact with other children.

• Twins are often born underweight because they are premature. However, this is not always the case. The heaviest total birth weight recorded of a pair of twins was 27 lbs 12 oz (12.58 kg) and goes to twins Patricia Jane and John Prosser Haskin of Arkansas. Patricia weight 14 lbs (6.35 kg) at birth and John trailed behind at 13 lbs 12 oz (6.23 kg). They were born on February 20, 1924.

• Go Green Tip: Temperatures are cooling in many parts of the country. Could your house use a fresh-air day? If the air smells a bit stale from running the air conditioner all summer, instead of using chemical air fresheners, just open up those windows and let the fall in.

• Butter wrappers are terrific pan greasers. Save your wrappers in a plastic baggie in the freezer, and they will always be on hand, ready to use almost as soon as they come out of the freezer.

• “Senior Tip: If you use a walker or cane, it’s good to write your contact information somewhere on it, just in case you lose it. However, why not include only your name and the name and phone number of your emergency contact? That way, if you lose your cane, it is more likely to get returned for having a phone number on it, but a stranger cannot find out where you live just by looking at, say, a return address label on your walker. And in any case, it’s good to have your emergency contact listed in case something happens while you are out.” -- M.A. in Arkansas

• Make your own reusable fabric softener: Fill a spray bottle with fabric softener and use an old washcloth as your “fabric softener sheet.” Use by dampening the washcloth with fabric softener and adding it to the clothes in the dryer. It’s reusable indefinitely. If it feels too gummed up, just toss it in the next load of your washer.

• Check out your chimney now. Use a mirror and flashlight to take a quick peek at your chimney to see if there is a buildup of soot that needs to be taken care of before fireplace season starts. Open the flue and shine the flashlight up the chimney. Hold a small hand mirror at about a 45-degree angle to look up the chimney.

• If you’re a twin, and even if you’re not, you might have heard of the annual Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. Twinsburg was originally Millsville and was first settled in 1817 when sixteen year-old Ethan Alling first moved to the area to inspect the land his family had just purchased. Alling would later go on to be the postmaster, hotel proprietor and much more. Two years later, twins Aaron and Moses Wilcox, identical twins from Killingworth, Connecticut, moved to Millsville. They offered to donate the land for the town square and help found a school if the town was renamed Twinsburg. The twins, who were strikingly identical in more than looks alone, married sisters, had the same number of children and died within hours of each other.

• The Twins Days Festival first started in Twinsburg in 1976 with thirty-seven sets of twins in attendance from around the United States. In 1979, the festival welcomed its first sets of international twins with a set from Poland and a set from Lebanon. Twins Days was held at the beginning of last month from August 7-9 and annually has over 2,500 sets of twins in attendance.

• Twin brothers John and William Reiff won the International Twins Association’s “Most Identical Twins” award twenty-two times. They left the Twins Days festival, which they annually attended, about $5 million dollars from their estate. Friends say the Twins Days Festival was the highlight of their year and they loved the festival and the people very much. William passed away in 2000 at age seventy, with John following him five years later.

• The Ann Landers and “Dear Abby” columns were written by identical twin sisters Esther and Pauline Friedman, who were born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1918

• Like we said before, some identical twins might not look alike and some fraternal twins might look the same, but sometimes twins look different in a way you might not expect. Twins Kian and Remee Hodgson just turned four this past April, but if you didn’t know them, you might not know they were twins. You see, Kian is black and Remee is white. They were born to Kylie Hodgson and Remi Horder of the United Kingdom, who both have white mothers and black fathers. One theory is that black haired, brown eyed Kian inherited all of the black genes from her parents where blond haired, blue-eyed Remee received all the white genes. Scientists say the odds of a biracial couple having twins with dramatically different skin tones are 1,000,000:1.

• If those chances seem high, take a look at this! Dean Durrant and Alison Spooner of Fleet, Hampshire in the United Kingdom are getting ready to celebrate the first birthdays of their twin daughters Miya and Leah this November. Like the aforementioned twins, Miya is black and Leah is white. While the chances of this happening are, literally, one in a million, what makes them really special is what happened back in 2001. You see, Miya and Leah aren’t Dean and Alison’s first children - they already have two other daughters. Yes, they’re twins, too! Like their baby sisters, seven year old Hayleigh and Lauren don’t look alike. Hayleigh has brown eyes and dark skin like her black father Dean, where Lauren has fair skin and blue eyes like her white mother Alison. The couple claim they weren’t expecting another set of twins - and they certainly weren’t expecting lightning to strike twice. They joked beforehand, though. What if? They even tried to place a bet, but were refused because the odds weren’t able to be scientifically calculated.

Tidbits estimonial…

Kathy Williams, tidbits sales manager

& Jonella Bachman, the source

I just wanted to send a special “Thank You” to “Tidbits” and Kathy Williams for their representa-tion of our shop.We are a metaphysical shop and most of the time as we advertise I find it is difficult for the sales representative to fully grasp the essence of our shop. We are unusual in most ways that seem standard to the majority. However, for the folks that we serve in our community, we are a shop of Possibilities. “Tidbits” has successfully captured our spirit and any placement of the ads we run with them seems to be working for us.The Source is a gift shop and beyond....we have unique offerings from local artists of many tal-ents, including chakra jewelry, crystal pendants, salt lamps, native American gifts, wind chimes, hand created note cards. and much more. We also share classes and gatherings where we choose to be “effective” rather than “effected”. Come visit our light atmosphere and open hearts.Again, much thanks to “Tidbits”. A special note: the first time our ad was in I had some customers come in the very next day and advise they had seen us there. Jonella Bachman, ProprietorThe Source Ltd.
