TIDBITS® THINKS LIKE A HOBO
HOPPING THE RAILSby Patricia L. Cook
Trains have fascinated people since they started rolling on the rails many years ago. One group of people in particular, hobos, made trains a big part of their lives, even though they weren’t au-thorized to do so! •During the latter19thcenturyandearly20thcentury,manypeoplecouldnotfindwork.Theworst timewas during the Great Depressionyears, from1929 to1940,whenmore than2millionmenandaround8,000womenbecamehobos.
• The word “hobo” is generally meant for anitinerant (wandering) person that’s willing to work. Some say the word was derived from“hoe-boy,”whichmeantsomeonelookingforfarmwork,hencewillingtohoecottonorothercrops. Another possible origination was from the intersection of Houston and BoweryStreetsinManhattan,NewYork, where“hobos”wereknowntocongregate.Thereareothertheoriesabout the word as well, but it was a word that came into use when trains provided a way to move about the country.
•Hobos found that the easiestway to get to adifferent city or part of the country was to hitch a ride on a freight train. Even though this was illegal, railroadswerekind tohobosandgenerally saw them as harmless people who just needed transportation.

TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

months earlier. The Germans had fired more than 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas against two French colonial divisions in April, claiming the French had first used gas in August 1914.
• On June 23, 1927, The Sioux County Pioneer newspaper of North Dakota reports that President Calvin Coolidge will be "adopted" into a Sioux tribe at Fort Yates on the border of North Dakota. At the Sioux ceremony, photographers captured Coolidge, in suit and tie, as he was given a grand ceremonial feathered headdress.
• On June 22, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt's administration creates the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the G.I. Bill. The bill gave returning servicemen access to unemployment compensation, low-interest home and business loans, and -- most importantly -- funding for education.
• On June 24, 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier and
Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy of publicly announce their engagement. Kennedy gave her a 2.88-carat diamond-and-emerald ring. Kennedy went on to become the 35th president and Jackie became one of the most popular first ladies ever to grace the White House.
• On June 21, 1964, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are killed by a Ku Klux Klan lynch mob near Meridian, Miss. The three young civil-rights workers were helping to register black voters in Mississippi, thus inspiring the ire of the local Klan.
• On June 20, 1975, director Steven Spielberg's thriller "Jaws" debuts in theaters. A $700,000 marketing campaign preceded the film's release, helping it to earn some $7 million in its opening weekend alone. The mechanical shark's name was "Bruce."

Somehobos became radical and tried to characterize their way of life as a freedom that they deserved.Hence, railroadssought tostop thefree rides.

Hobos are known for carrying all of their “stuff” with them in a small bindle. This act speaks to the point of life’s needs and in today’s lingo, one’s ecological footprint. Ecological footprint refers to the resources needed to support a person’s lifestyle. Smaller footprints are consistent with resource conservation and green living. Consider your lifestyle and search for ways to reduce your ecological footprint.

• It was American author Paul Auster who made the following sage observation: "Only the good doubt their own goodness, which is what makes them good in the first place. The bad know they are good, but the good know nothing. They spend their lives forgiving others, but they can't forgive themselves."

• The next time you're planning a European vacation, make time to visit the coast of the Netherlands, where you can stay in one of the world's most unusual hotels. Along the banks of the Wadden Sea you'll find Harlingen Harbour Crane, an actual derrick that was once used to haul timber. These days it holds aloft luxurious sleeping quarters designed for only one party at a time. If you need a change of scenery, just head to the control room to swing the crane around until you find a view that strikes your fancy. • You may be surprised to learn that there is a growing interest in the new sport known as chess boxing. It's a hybrid sport in which competitors alternate 4-minute rounds of speed chess with 2-minute rounds of boxing. 10 REASONSWhy Isagenix® is Your Anti-Aging Solution1. SLOW AGING FROM THE INSIDE OUTIsagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing™ products help eliminate harmful toxins and impurities from the body that can accelerate the aging process. These products also replenish the body with crucial nutrients for optimal health. The Rejuvity and other anti-aging products also address the need for optimal cellular nutrition that ultimately creates a new level of wellness, vitality, and youthful appearance from the inside out.
2. ADDRESS AGING ON ALL FRONTS-NOT JUST SKINThe skin is largely an indication of how the body is aging. If the body has been abused, neglected and malnourished, then the skin will reflect this. However, if the body’s cells, tissues and organs are protected from harmful pollutants and replenished with crucial nutrients, the skin will reflect this level of health by appearing vibrant, glowing and youthful.

Yard Sale Tips
Summer is a great time to de-clutter and make a few dollars at the same time. Holding a yard sale can be work, but it also can be lucrative. Here are some tips to make your yard sale successful.Posters and signs: Put up notices in grocery stores, the library, senior center -- anywhere you can find community bulletin boards. Be sure what the laws are in your area about posting on telephone poles. Make a list of the sign locations so you can take them down quickly after the sale.Ads: Go in with others on the cost and hold a multi-family sale. The bigger the sale, the more traffic you're likely to get.Organize: Set aside the items you want to sell. Gather user
manuals, clean your items and make them look as attractive as possible. Pricing: Put prices on everything, ideally where the sticker easily can be seen. Put bigger signs on items such as furniture.
Recruit the kids: You might convince them to sell their unused toys if you allow them to keep the money. If nothing else, you can clear some of the clutter out of their rooms.Clothing: Make sure items are washed and dried and hung on hangers. Check the pockets.Books: Price them cheaply enough and they'll move quickly. Flip through the books to make sure you haven't left anything between the pages.Cash only: Put up a sign that says you'll only take cash -- and stick to it. If someone wants something, be willing to "hold" an item for a few minutes while your customer runs to the nearest ATM. Generally, however, people know they're going to spend money at yard sales, and they
bring the cash they need.Table displays: Have enough tables so that merchandise is up off the ground. Don't make people bend over and paw through boxes of stuff under a table, especially clothing and books.Paper or plastic? Collect plastic grocery bags for people to use.Be honest: If the printer doesn't do color photos well but is great with black ink, say so on the price sticker. Making change: Have plenty of bills and coins to make change. Designate a family member to run the cash box -- and not leave it unattended for a second. Even better: Use a pouch that belts around your waist.

OperationLifesaver is a program that started in IdahowiththeUnionPacificRailroadin1972.Thisprogram has more to do with the safety of highway traffic at railroad crossings than itdoes hobos, however, a large function of the program is educating the public that railroads are private property.

The bridge has been undergoing a massive reconstruction that is scheduled, but doubted by many, to be complete by June 2011.
