Neatest TIDBITS® SAYS– IT HAPPENED ONE APRIL by Kathy Wolfe April has been a busy time over the years! Follow along as Tidbits takes a look at some of the interesting events that have taken place during this fourth month of the Gregorian calendar. • Noah Webster was 70 years old when he copyrighted the first edition of his 70,000-entry “American Dictionary of the English Language” in April of 1828. Although we’ve depended on Webster’s dictionary all our lives, his first edition sold only 2,500 copies. When it came time to issue the second edition, Webster mortgaged his home in order to finance it, and he lived in debt the remainder of his days. • In April of 1973, Martin Cooper stood on the streets of New York City and did something no one had ever done before. He placed a call from a portable cellular phone! Cooper, the general manager of Motorola’s Communications Division, called his competitor at AT&T labs using a 30-ounce (850-g) brick-like phone. Compare this with today’s phone at about 3 ounces (85 g). The process of bringing portable cell phones to the consumer market took 10 years, and Motorola introduced their 16-ounce (453-g) DynaTAC phone in 1983, carrying a price tag of $3,500. turn the page for more! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On April 24, 1976, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals, 3-2, in 139 minutes and 15 seconds of total game play, making it the fifth-longest match in the history of the National Hockey League. A regulation hockey game lasts 60 minutes.

In April of 1951, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were given the death sentence for conspiracy to commit espionage. These American communists were convicted of passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. The judge’s words were, “I consider your crime worse than murder.”

Four high school boys suffering from spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch, they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire. They were relieved when she smiled and said, “You missed a test today, so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said, “First question: Which tire was flat?”

The New York World’s Fair was the site of the unveiling of the first Ford Mustang in April of 1964. The car also made its debut in Ford showrooms across the nation, with nearly 22,000 Mustangs sold the first day. Sales skyrocketed to more than 400,000 during that first year of production. The “pony car” wasn’t named for a horse as you might expect, but rather for a World War II fighter plane.

But what if it were all gone? Poof! Not if the members of the New RAMS of Glenrock can help it. In fact, many merchants are going out of their way to accommodate customers, thinking up new and innovative ways to keep the doors open and business bustling. That’s good news for consumers. Sometimes, it’s not just the price of an item or ser-vice that is the bottom line for customers, but it’s the total value of the experience. RAMS dedicated to the community and busi-nesses of Glenrock/Converse County...bringing exciting weekend events, annual celebrations and the upholding of the organiza-tion’s values to preserve and protect offers countless patrons to the district the kind hospitality, and the sense of community that is truly Glenrock.

Costly Shots Leave Cat Owner Wincing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, “Trina,” is an indoor cat -- her paws never touch the outside ground. So why does she need so many different shots each year? The fe-line leukemia I can understand, but why should she get a rabies shot and so on when she’s never exposed to other crea-tures? The shots are so costly that we are refraining from taking her to get them. -- Ethel H., via e-mail

DEAR ETHEL: I can understand your re-luctance to keep getting Trina shots every year when she is at low risk of catching the diseases the shots prevent. And the shot package is costly -- even many “low cost” shot clinics run upward of $45 to $65 for a complete set of vaccinations. However, state health boards have decided they can’t take the chance of unvaccinat-ed cats getting out among other cats (and pets do escape, even if Trina is a good cat) and catching and then spreading cer-tain diseases. There’s also the admittedly low risk of another pet or wild animal en-tering Trina’s living space and biting or otherwise exposing her to a disease. So,

although I know it’s expensive and un-comfortable, for Trina’s sake, she needs to be vaccinated regularly. In recent years, a growing number of states have been reducing the frequency of rabies shots -- from every year to once every three years. Certain other shots still are required annually, but it’s one less item on your bill. Please keep Trina’s vaccinations up to date. You’ll have the peace of mind of knowing she’s safe just in case.

Note: To help out financially strapped pet owners, I’ve been listing low-cost vaccina-tion clinics by state on my website, www.pawscorner.com. Check to see if a clinic is taking place in your area. If you know of an upcoming clinic that’s not listed, email me at [email protected], and I’ll add the date.

Saving Money in 2011

With a little effort, small savings can add up to big money in the space of a year. Here are a few steps to take in 2011.If you've filed your taxes and expect a big refund, consider that you've just made an interest-free loan to the government. They've had use of your money when you could have used it yourself. Take a look at your tax withholding, do the math and make adjustments to bring you as close as possible to the amount you'll actually owe. If you're getting a raise this year, put at least half of the increase in savings or toward debt, especially credit cards. Pay down the account with the highest interest rate first. (But don't cancel the card, as

it's part of your credit profile.) Commit to making one extra mortgage payment per year or sending an additional amount each month. Enclose a note asking that it be applied to your principal. Use

an online calculator to see just how many years and dollars you can shave off your mortgage.Comparison shop before you buy big items, especially electronics and appliances. Check the Sunday sales flyers in the paper and look online at sites like Pricegrabber.com to compare prices. Print out what you find online and take it to your local store: Chances are they'll meet or beat the other price.Consider whether you're due for an adjustment in your property taxes. Ask the local tax assessor for a reappraisal if you've been in your home for more than three years; it may be worth less than it was, in which case you're paying too much.Look for new home or vehicle

insurance and consider raising your deductible. While a higher deductible will mean that you'll have to come up with more cash should you ever have a claim, you'll be making smaller monthly payments on the policy. Ask about combining home and auto with one company. It's possible you'll get an additional discount.Shop around for a new bank if yours charges ATM fees, has a monthly service charge for checking accounts or requires you to keep a minimum balance. Call credit unions or savings banks in your area, or check Bankrate.com to find local banks.

“There was buried treasure in the backyard just waiting to be dug up and the family knew it. So one day the granddaughter decided to excavate what her grandmother, an escapee from an oppressive Russian tsarist rule, put in the dirt years ago. Turns out it was $57,000 worth of Russian gold rubles.”

That’s just one story Colleen Rivera likes to tell. Witnessing such impressive finds is part of her job as a show manager for the Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery’s traveling roadshow.

The Springfield, Ill.-based company is in Casper through Saturday looking to buy precious metals, jewelry, historical artifacts, antiques and other collectibles.

When someone brings in an item, The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow evaluates it, makes an offer, then writes out a check sending that person home with some extra cash. Our job is to find buyers for items. We’re the middle man. We try to find someone in that market interested,” said Jeramy Weese, also a show manager for the Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow.

Weese said that when an individual brings in an item, the buyers will enter the details into their online system which connects with over 10,000 collectors. Items can range from coin collections to vintage guitars and everything in between. “If we can get someone to generate an offer, they agree to the terms and we give them a check on the spot. However, if more than one collector is interested, the offer can go higher,” explains Weese.

David Ford, a buyer for the company, said he enjoys traveling to different towns each week and finding new and interesting items. Just a few weeks back he had a woman come in who had bought a coin from the casino she worked at for a dollar the night before. She walked out that morning with a check for $50. She joked that this was the quickest $49 dollars she ever made.

So search through your closets and bring down your items to the La Quinta this week. Chances are, you will walk out with a little extra money in your pocket.
