By Samantha Weaver

- Of particular interest in these troubled economictimes, it was British humor columnist KatharineElizabeth Whitehorn who made the following sageobservation: “The easiest way for your childrento learn about money is for you not to have any.”

- The fish known as the electric ray can produce acurrent strong enough to kill an adult human.

- If you are the parent of a young daughter, youare probably all too familiar with the Japaneseexport Hello Kitty. A new item has recently been

added to the Hello Kitty line, but it is decidedlynot for kids: The Super Hello Kitty Jewel doll ison the market for $150,000. To celebrate the 35thanniversary of the character, Sanrio (the maker ofHello Kitty), Swarovski (known for high-endcrystals) and Japanese jewelry maker I.K. havecreated a 4-inch-tall Hello Kitty of platinum, andstudded the doll with 1,939 pieces of white topaz,403 pink sapphires, eyes of black spinel and a noseof citrine. The whole thing is topped off with aone-carat diamond on its hair ribbon.

- The onion is actually a member of the lily family.

- The next time you have a little bit of food stuckin your teeth, consider this: More Americans chokeon toothpicks than on any other object.

Playing Nice Isn’t This Cat’s NatureBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two cats. Onewe’ve had about three years, and the other is astray we recently adopted that was emaciated andhad an infected foot. “Carlo,” our older cat, isneutered, and the new cat is a (probably unspayed)female. She is terrified of Carlo. Once they gotinto a fight, which made her even more terrified. We have kept her separated from Carlo until sheis built up and her infected foot heals. We wouldlike to reintroduce them to each other under oursupervision, but don’t know exactly how to do it.Any advice? — Mary F. via e-mail

DEAR MARY: For the moment, allow the newcat to heal. Then, take her to the vet to find out ifshe is spayed, and if not, get that done. Having

her spayed probably won’t guarantee peace in thehouse, but it will protect her from pregnancy if shegets outside.

Getting the pair to get along will be difficult. It’s not impossible, but there’s a good chance thatthe best relationship they’ll have is a mutual re-spect of each other’s territory. Keep Carlo and thenew cat separated when you’re not home. Whenyou are at home, have them interact in “neutralterritory” (away from food dishes and cat boxes).Keep a shaker can of coins at hand. If their hissingrises in pitch or a paw swats out — or all-out warbegins — shake the can hard near them.

Gradually increase the amount of time that thecats spend together in neutral territory. Keep yourvoice calm but firm during these interactions. Whilethey get used to each other, keep their food andlitter boxes apart. If they improve relations, youcan try gradually moving their food dishes into onecommon area.

Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner,c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando,FL 32853-6475, or e-mail them to [email protected].

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

London PlaybillQ: I have a playbill of the stage production of

“Blythe Spirit,” which I saw at the Dutchess Theatrein London in 1944. Although this playbill has

sentimental value to me, I also am curious about itsmonetary value. — Robert, Palm Coast, Fla.

A: Based on the value of other vintage playbills I’veseen in the marketplace, the one you have is worthabout $10.

Martinsville was a high point for RoushFenway Racing driver Jamie McMurray.Sixth place marked his best finish of theseason, only his fourth in the top 10 andhis first top 10since May.

McMurray, twice a winner at NASCAR’s highestlevel, looks to the future with uncertainty. WithNASCAR insisting on a limit of four full-time carsper team, owner Jack Roush has to cut back his op-eration, making McMurray the most likely driver inthe Roush stable to either move to another team orbe shuffled elsewhere within the Ford contingent.

The 33-year-old driver from Joplin, Mo., won hissecond Sprint Cup race, but that was way back inOctober 2002, when he won at Lowe’s Motor Speed-way substituting for injured Sterling Marlin. In 2007,McMurray picked up career victory No. 2 inDaytona’s July race.

“It was a really good day,” said McMurray ofMartinsville Speedway’s Tums Fast Relief 500. “Wemade really good pit calls and had good pit strategy. Our car was better than average, so we just had asolid day.”

McMurray is a proponent of the “double-file re-starts rule” implemented earlier this year. At the endof each caution period, cars restart in running order, similar to the beginning of a race. Lapped cars, for-merly placed in one of the two lines, are now burieddeep in the pack, leaving the leaders to race for po-sition.

“If you have a fast car, you don’t have to do allthe strategy stuff,” said McMurray. “If you’re strug-gling to stay on the lead lap, then maybe there’ssomething you can do there to work to your ben-efit.”

“It’s very, very exciting, I think, for the fans. Oursport is based on putting a good show on, and this isputting a better show on for the fans.”

McMurray ranks 22nd in Sprint Cup points, 184

behind Kevin Harvick, 27 ahead of Martin Truex Jr. and 29 in front of 24th-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. McMurray’s three best career finishes in the pointstandings all occurred while he drove Dodges for Chip Ganassi. He fin-ished 13th in 2003, 11th in 2004 and 12th in 2005.

I recently wrote about how to get help with thecomputer, and mentioned some of the benefits, oneof which is e-mail and chatting with family andfriends. Now there’s a study out that gives anotherbenefit: Computer use by seniors helps to keepdepression at bay.

The Phoenix Center in Washington, D.C., recentlyissued a policy paper that claims that Internet useby seniors reduces depression by 20 percent. It sayscomputers help seniors stay in contact with “sourcesof social support when face-to-face interactionbecomes more difficult.”

Not to be picky, but being a senior isn’t the onlyreason one might have difficulty having face-to-faceinteraction. Anyone who lives in a cold climate wherethe snow will be up to the windowsills by Januarycould have a problem getting out. Those without acar who live in areas without good mass transit couldhave a problem, too.

Still, one has to appreciate the effort. They’re tryingto help us — I think. Here’s how it works, accordingto the study:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of2009 aims to spend more than $7.2 billion towardmaking the Internet more available to everyone. ThePhoenix study revealed that only 42 percent of seniorsage 65 and older use the Internet. It computed theannual overall cost of depression — $100 billion peryear — and concluded that there is a dollar benefitto bringing seniors onboard with broadband Internetservice. So we appear to be a good place to spendsome of that reinvestment money.

Balancing work, family and holidays, not tomention keeping on budget, is the big challengefor parents this time of year. With a thousand andone things to do and never enough time to accom-plish everything, it’s especially hard to set asidespecial time with our kids.

Here’s a solution that works! Incorporate kidsinto your everyday activities and let them help cre-ate a homemade holiday with you. These twoprojects are whimsical, fun and easy to do togetheras you get ready for Thanksgiving Day.

NAPKIN PORTRAITSPurchase inexpensive, solid-colored fabric nap-

kins or repurpose an old set you already own. Kidswill enjoy personalizing them by drawing a por-trait of each person sitting at the Thanksgiving din-ner table. Use fabric paints in squeeze bottles orfabric markers, and draw the portrait freehand onone quadrant of each napkin. (An adult may heat-set the drawings with an iron when the paint isdry.)

When it’s time to set the table, place one on eachplate to serve as a unique place card. As relativesand guests arrive, they’ll smile when they find theirplace at the table.

Wash them up and save them to use year after

Kids Help DecorateThanksgiving Table

year as a family tradition. In 10 years, Aunt Thelmamay say she never looked so young!

TIP: Instead of fabric napkins, use nice paperdinner napkins for single-use portrait napkins. Kidsmay draw the portraits with nontoxic permanentmarkers instead of fabric paint.

FALL BLOOMSArrange chrysanthemums in a hollowed-out

mini-pumpkin, acorn squash or small gourd. First, place a chunk of damp florist foam trimmed to fitthe hollowed-out portion. The kids may poke thestems of flowers into the foam, one at a time, untilthe arrangement is complete. Make several, andplace them around the house or cluster them in themiddle of the Thanksgiving table for a centerpiece.

“The grandkids are coming!” tip: Visit the pub-lic library and search for books about NativeAmerican life. Look for collections of NativeAmerican stories. When you are together with thegrandkids on Thanksgiving Day, talk about Na-tive American traditions and read aloud a legendto honor Native Americans and their contributionsto culture. If you have Native American ancestry, share stories you would like them to remember.

• Go Green Tip: Is that article of clothing youjust picked up off the floor of your kid’s roomgenuinely dirty, or just barely worn? Installseveral hooks for items that can be wornagain before washing. If you can’t get themto put tried-on clothes away, train your kidsto lay them on the bed or over a chair, asopposed to on the floor. They are more likelyto be mistaken for dirty and be washed, wasting water and electricity, as well asshortening the life of the clothes.

• “This holiday season, I’d like to sit back andenjoy the company of my family and friends,so I am baking a batch of cookies each weekand doubling one casserole or soup recipeeach week. This way, I should have my holidaybaking done and several cook-free nights toenjoy with others instead of bustling aroundthe kitchen and missing everything. Someoneput on a pot of coffee!” — M.E. in Alabama

• It’s this time of year that weare encouraged to look aroundus and think of the needs ofothers. Many families areplanning holiday meals. Arethere families in yourneighborhood that arestruggling? Perhaps someoneat the senior center whodoesn’t have family to gatherwith this Thanksgiving? Reachout to others, and do what youcan to help.

• “Save your toilet-paper rollsand make fire starters for justpennies: Just take a roll, stuff itwith dried twigs, crumpledpaper, dryer lint, grass, etc.Shred a candle and melt thewax to drizzle over the edges tokeep the stuffing inside. Packseveral together in a cute minitote, and they even make greatgifts. You can use them indoorsor out.” — I.L. in Pennsylvania

• If you need to cover a plateand have run out of plasticwrap, check your bathroom. You can use a shower cap as afood-plate cover in a pinch. Justmake sure it is clean, preferablyunused.

DVDs reviewed in this column will beavailable in stores the week of Nov. 16, 2009.

PICKS OF THE WEEKStar Trek — In one fell swoop — and the help

of a hackneyed time-travel plot device — directorJ.J. Abrams erases five decades of Trek canon. Andbecause this “reboot” grossed eleventy-billion-trillion dollars, we can count on at least anotherdecade of swish-pans, lens-flares and the angryblogging of disgruntled Trekkies nit-picking everyframe.

Since this is a Major DVD Release Event, thereare numerous editions and packagings to choosefrom. I’ll be commenting on the two-disc edition, since it’ll be the one most fans will probably buy. However, it’s worth noting that if you are a hugefan of the film, there is a limited-edition Blu-Rayboxed set with three discs and a massive metalreplica of the Enterprise that weighs over a pound. The Replica Gift set retails for $130.

Hokay, back to the two-disc pack. In addition tothe film, there is a commentary track with J.J.Abrams, the writers and producers; a documentaryon the production and a gag reel. On disc two is adigital copy of the film, a lot of deleted scenes, featurettes about casting, the musical score, alien

creation and more behind-the-scenes peeks.

“Gone With The Wind 70th AnniversaryUltimate Collector’s Edition” — This collectioncontains five DVDs, a CD soundtrack, a hardcover52-page book of photographs and production art,10 art prints and a reproduction of the original 1939program all lovingly crammed into velvet box.

With a retail price of $70, the question is, “Is itworth it?” The answer is: If you don’t already own, say, the four-disc special edition that came out awhile back, then yes it is. If you’ve already boughtthat edition there really isn’t much new here in termsof content. The only new feature is a documentaryhosted by Kenneth Branagh with the unimaginativeand obviously made-by-some-marketing wonk-title:“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Presents 1939:Hollywood’s Greatest Year.”

So, if you’re a big fan of the film and don’t yetown a copy, this is a great set to own. It’s remasteredfor hi-def TVs, has eight hours of extras and let’snot forget that nifty velvet box. Or if you knowsomeone who’s a fan, this would make an awesomeChristmas gift.

While the First Amendment will always be thereand writers have always tried their best to keepsports away from the gossip on the back pages oftheir tabloids and broadsheets, the wall started tobreak in the ’60s when New York reporters startedreporting on Yankee brawls at the Copacabana andin the late ’70s when they started reporting on cock-tail straws and marshmallow salesmen. Sold papersthough, didn’t it?

The leading sports weblog on the Internet,Deadspin, gets its hits, too - it’s probably the lead-ing independent sports blog on the Web. A trip toDeadspin will offer viewers a fair share of rumormongering, salacious gossip and a lot of irreverent, sarcastic takes on sports reporting that can supple-ment a fan’s intake of statistics, standings and (hope-fully) actual games watched.

Deadspin has, of course, drawn a lot of fire fromthe traditional media, especially as of late.Deadspin’s “go for the garter” style of reporting andits easily apparent jealousy of “old media” typesgetting legitimate credentials into actual press boxesreally seem to chap their hides. Still, it’s alwayskind of fun seeing the old guard — guys like BobCostas (I’m sure Dick Enberg hasn’t a clue as towho they are) get annoyed with them. They can, ongood weeks, come off like the bad kids in the backof the classroom but have really nice parents.

A few weeks ago, The NY Times, ESPN andTIME magazine — not exactly what you’d calllightweights in the media world — took a Deadspincorrespondent to task for threatening to “unload thein-box of all the sordid rumors we’ve received overthe years about various ESPN employees.”

The blogger was unhappy that he wasn’t gettingany answers from ESPN’s brass about allegedsexual harassment or misconduct at the company.Spreading rumors, for most any other “old media”bastion, would be considered “libel.” What Mr.Internet was upset about was that he wasn’t getting

Publicationas retaliation

there first. As Time, ESPN and the NY Times —all of them credentialed — pointed out, “tough(crap).” Anyway, offering publication as retaliationis no way to get a scoop — at least not more thanone.

Did Deadspin’s correspondents think they werethe first to find out a “Mr. Face” for a sports net-work had sex with his co-worker? Were they madfor not beating CNN with a “posted 6 minutes agovia web” post?

I suppose all this soap-opera stuff matters tomany, but not to me. I’d just rather watch the game.Pass me the beer and the chips and ask me if I carewho Tony Romo is sleeping with. (I don’t.) Throwthe ball!

But that’s just my Sporting View. (I knew any-way.)

Q: I am a huge fan of the “Monty Python” ac-tors. I was wondering what they have been up tolately? — Paulie H., via e-mail

A: The “Monty Python” gang recently reunited(except for the deceased Graham Chapman, whowas represented in cardboard-cutout form) in NewYork City to celebrate their 40th anniversary andthe release of their new documentary airing onIFC called “Monty Python: Almost the Truth (TheLawyer’s Cut).” The gang reminisced about theold days and even credited the U.S. with savingthe “Flying Circus.” Terry Jones explained: “Therewere no VCRs, no DVDs in those days. The BBCnearly wiped all of ‘Monty Python’s Flying Cir-cus’. We got a call one day from our video editorsaying they were about to erase all the shows —the BBC had put them onto Phillips cassettes, theonly thing we had at the time. In fact, the BBCwould have wiped all the ‘Python’ TV shows ifthey hadn’t suddenly sold them to the UnitedStates - so, thank you, the United States!”

• • •Q: Is actress Marla Sokoloff married? Does she

have any kids? I really loved watching her on “ThePractice.” — Dottie M., Portland, Maine

A: Marla just married longtime boyfriend, mu-sician Alec Puro. She got plenty of practice inplanning the wedding: She just filmed the Hall-mark Channel original movie, “Flower Girl,”about a florist who provides all of the flowers andfloral arrangements for weddings, among otheroccasions. The movie premieres Nov. 14, exactlyone week after the actress marries in real life. Buthey almost didn’t have a lavish wedding, as Marlatold me: “We almost eloped about six months ago,but we decided not to. I thought, I’m my mom’sonly daughter and she really wants to be there, sowe ended up not doing it. But it has gone throughmy mind many, many times.”

A: It would appear that you are correct. Ac-cording to Jennifer’s representative, the actresshas no plans to host a weekly talk show forOprah Winfrey’s new cable channel, OWN(which stands for the Oprah Winfrey Network). The rep says these claims are “absolutely false.”

“How to Be a Movie Star:Elizabeth Taylor in

Hollywood”by William J. Mann

(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $28)Reviewed by Larry Cox

There’s a remarkable story in William J.Mann’s new biography of Elizabeth Taylor. While shooting a scene for “Butterfield 8,”director Daniel Mann handed his star a couple

of eggs and told her to pretend to make breakfastwhile standing at the stove. Taylor’s eyes grew wide.Holding an egg out in each hand, she asked, “Butwhat do I do with them?” She had never madebreakfast in her life, nor had she been to a baseballgame or school dance that wasn’t pre-arranged bythe publicity department of MGM.

Mann, who has written several successfulHollywood biographies, draws on personal interviewsand access to the private papers of such heavy hittersas Mike Todd, George Stevens, Ernest Lehman,Hedda Hopper, Vincente Minnelli and George Cukorto finally reconcile the real Elizabeth Taylor with themythical creature behind the hype.

He documents the early rift in the Taylor familythat pitted her mother on one side, her father on theother, and young Elizabeth in the middle. The lengthsto which her mother went to secure roles for Elizabeth

are legendary. For example, one can almost seeMrs. Taylor with her 11-year-old daughter in towchasing Clarence Brown across the MGM lot inher determination to land Elizabeth the role in“National Velvet.”

Mann’s book underscores the fact that ElizabethTaylor is — above all else — a survivor. Throughrocky marriages that included an abusive NickyHilton, singer Eddie Fisher and actor RichardBurton, her brushes with death and scandals, shesimply lived life on her own terms. If she brokerules, challenged authority and slipped in and outof marriages and affairs along the way, so be it.

Perhaps that is why she is so relevant andremains, even after more than half a century, oneof this country’s most fascinating celebrities.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to givemy 10-year-old grandson some conditioningadvice. He loves basketball. It has occurred tome that upper-body strength is helpful in shoot-ing long shots and in positioning for rebounds. In high school, I had a well-developed lowerbody but a poorly developed upper body. Thishandicapped me when shooting long shots. Ihave added pushups to my daily exercises, andthis has helped me in shooting three-pointers.

My questions are: When is a good time for aboy to start building muscle? Are there any ex-ercises you would recommend for upper-bodystrength building for a 10-year-old? — J.M.

ANSWER: The sports community, until re-cently, frowned on strength training(weightlifting, muscle building, resistance ex-ercise) for children who had not reached pu-berty. They thought that children, before themale hormone surge that takes place at puberty, would not benefit from it. It’s been shown thatthey do, and that children as young as 7 showimprovement in strength.

The sports community also feared thatweightlifting posed a health threat to youngchildren whose bones are not completely cal-cified. Young bones have growth plates, sec-tions of bone that have yet to become real bone.Growth plates permit bone elongation. Theseareas are areas of weakness. A well-supervised,well-designed weightlifting program doesn’tinjure growth plates. In fact, such a programprotects children from common sports injuries. All this applies to girls as well as boys.

Your grandson can do the same exercises youdo — with less weight. Your pushups are a goodexample. Body weight is the weight beinghoisted. Chin-ups are another strength-build-

Strength Training OKfor Young Children

ing exercise in which body weight is the stimu-lus for muscle growth. He also can lift barbellsand dumbbells. He should start with a weightthat he can lift 12 consecutive times withoutstraining. When he can perform two sets of 15consecutive lifts, you can increase the weightby one to 3 pounds and go back to the 12 lifts.Barbell and dumbbell curls and bench pressesare good upper-body strength-building exer-cises.

A visit to the local library will pay off withbooks that show the details of many strength-building exercises.

The booklet on fitness outlines aerobic ex-ercise (not strength-building exercise) in de-tail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue —No. 1301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. ANSWER: I’mwith you. This adviceis similar to the ad-vice not to eat any-thing after 6 p.m. be-

cause those late-in-the-day calories aren’tburned when you sleep. Calorie-burning is around-the-clock business, and calories eatenat 10 p.m. can be burned the next day at 10a.m.

Better Money HabitsAdd Up to Savings

Don’t wait until the end of December to do a year-end financial review. This is a good time to begindeveloping new habits that will help you save moneynext year. Here are some ideas:

Utility bills: If you had a goal this year of reduc-ing your utility expenses by always turning off lightsand lowering the thermostat, did you do it? If yoursavings weren’t what you expected because youdidn’t always follow through, set a goal for next year.Notch the thermostat down a degree or two and turnoff lights you’re not using until it becomes an easyhabit.

Cell phones: If you’re on a monthly plan that givesyou a certain number of minutes for a set price, chances are you use up those minutes because they’rethere. You can save money, however, by changingto an inexpensive phone with pre-paid minutes thatyou refill as needed. Your cell phone usage is likelyto go down when you consider that each call is cost-ing you a nickel or a dime per minute. The initialsavings: no monthly bill. Additional savings: fewerminutes used.

Grocery coupons: You have to do the work — cutthem out of the paper, plan meals around items thatare covered by the coupons — but there is seriousmoney to be saved using grocery coupons. Investi-gate online coupon sites, too. (Generate a throwawaye-mail address for those sites requiring that you sign

up.) Check with your local store before you presentthem with printed coupons. Some stores won’t takethem. Pay attention to expiration dates. Rule ofthumb: Don’t be tempted to buy food your familywon’t eat just because it looks like a good deal.

Sales flyers, ads and Internet comparison: Get inthe habit of looking at the flyers and ads in the news-paper. Compare any intended purchases to what youfind online. Plus, a local store with a Web site mightlist specials that never show up in a print ad.

Think used: Check thrift shops for merchandisein good condition. You can find clothing, furniture,

tools, books, children’s games, housewares andmuch more at very low prices.

Take some steps now, and you’ll be positionedto start the New Year with better money-savinghabits.
