Tickhill St Mary’s do Zumba and sing in the courtyard

Zumba

ZumbAtomic® is a fun and healthy program designed just for kids using the Zumba® concept. St Mary’s School is the first one in the area to embrace the exciting new concept when it asked Big Hearted Zumba to provide the ZumbAtomic® Programme as an after-school class. It is a unique program that was designed with a specific structure and teaching method aimed at children which not only provides dance and fitness but also embeds social skills, discipline, respect and leadership skills in a fun but structured way.

Apart from the obvious health benefits of the program, psychologically the participants soon associate the activities with feeling very happy and having fun thus helping to dispel some of the negativity associated with exercise. It is socially engaging and children work together in class as they engage in the lively motivational workout. There is no sense of competition and the children learn about team work, and responsibility for each other although they are encouraged to be individually creative and to be proud of their newly acquired dance skills.

Singing in the courtyard

The children at St Mary’s joined in the Tickhill late night shopping evening and delighted the shoppers with some singing before the switching on of the Christmas lights.

An occasion to ‘bee’ grateful

Christmas is an occasion to be grateful for the birth of Jesus, but at St Mary’s we are also grateful for the kindness of residents in Tickhill. Someone recently removed an enormous wasp nest in one piece from their garden and they had the kindness to think of our children. The magnificent nest will be used for science lessons and looking at habitats. Thank you very much!

A peaceful New Year from all at St Mary’s! Katarina Martin

T ickhill Together Once again the weather was kind to us for the late night shopping and Christmas lights switch-on. Mayor Ray Hill also formally opened

Tickhill's newest treasure, The Little Sweet Shop in Castlegate and presented prizes for the best dressed windows. And what a wonderful display by all the other shops and pubs, as well as the market stalls in St Mary's Gate.

There were carols in St Mary's Church, singing in the Courtyard by children from Estfeld and St Mary's schools, followed by a theatrical performance by C.A.T.S.

The Green Oak Morris Men performed around the town and the Pied Piper of Tickhill drew children to Santa's Grotto at Castle Community Hall, so beautifully decorated by the lovely ladies from the Close.

A most enjoyable and successful evening for all, which we hope to repeat in 2012.

C harity Calendar Thank you to everyone who has purchased one of the calendars produced by members of the Northern Society of Botanical Art to raise funds

for St John’s Hospice. Over £1600 has been raised far exceeding all expectations. Thank you to KSM cards, Eaton’s butchers and Stephen Jon’s for selling the calendars.

Tickhill Juniors U12 Team (pictured) was recently selected to receive a sponsored Santander football strip courtesy of their local Santander Agency in Tickhill. Isolex Financial Ltd, who also has an agency in Rossington, donated the kit as part of a new Community Sponsorship Programme launched by Santander.

Steve Davenport, Manager of the Team said “The boys were delighted with it, and they looked very professional at their training session, it is very much appreciated by all involved in the team.”

The Manager of the agencies Michelle Newton said “We pride ourselves on delivering a first class banking service to our local residents and it was a real pleasure to be able to donate the kit to the local team”.

The agency recently celebrated their one year anniversary with Santander and the partnership has enabled them to support the local communi-ty with a banking service, and provide customers with access to a range of highly competitive products to help meet their financial needs.

Learning for Life Succeeding Together

On Saturday 3 December Sir Thomas Wharton Community College hosted, for the first time, the District Final of the Rotary International Young Chef competition - a nationwide competition for young people aged 11-17.

Megan Simmonite, Georgia Kerry-Temperton, and Jamie King (all aged 12) competed to represent the school in the District Final with Jamie producing the winning menu of Lemon Chicken with Wild Rice and Apple Crumble. He was one of only 4 Competitors in the District Final. Well done! Megan, Georgia and Jamie were each awarded a Great British Bake Off Cookery Book.

Congratulations to students –

and staff – who were involved in the magnificent production of Bugsy Malone. This was a huge success with all three days sold out. Our students played their parts like professionals with fantastic singing, dancing and the occasional splurge gun! Accompanied by the superb STWCC band. The cast donned their gangster gear once more on 15 December to entertain the senior citizens of our community at the annual Christmas tea party. The cast of Bugsy Malone

Judges’ comments on Jamie’s winning dish: “Excellent

presentation, aromatic smell, perfectly cooked rice, crumble

had a wonderful texture. Very organised”.

We are always on the lookout for new men to join us to perform Traditional English Dance and to keep the tradition alive. THANKS On Nov.4th I was for want of a better word Mugged on Thorne Road Doncaster. One side of my face was smashed into the pavement, consequently I ended up in hospital with a broken bone under my eye, a damaged cheek and a damaged jawbone, to say nothing of the shock. The reason I am writing is in the hope that I can say a huge thank you to Margaret Paige and Robert Lloyd of Tickhill, they helped me so much. Also a lovely young woman called Karen who works in Taylors and my dear sister in law Katleen Fearn, even though she is disa-bled she managed to do lots for me. Without their help after I came out of hospital I would have found it very difficult to cope. Thank God there are people like this in the world.

VILLAGE PLAYERS (EVERTON) ‘Live Theatre on your doorstep”

Cabaret Evening 27th January 2012

On Friday 27th January we will be presenting, in Everton Village Hall, another of our popular cabaret evenings. With the help of a subsidy from Nottinghamshire Village Ventures we have secured a top class jazz group, whose members have performed at international level. Fascinating Rhythm is a newly formed group of four talented artists. An indication of their quality can be seen from some of the top names they have worked with as individuals. These include: The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Jacqui Dankworth, Hayley Westenra, Georgie Fame, Barry Manilow and Cliff Richard. As previously we will be kicking off the evening at 6:30 pm, when the doors and licensed bar will open. At about 6:45 we will be serving a hot meal (vegetarian option available) and the performance will start at 7:30. We will be serving a sweet course in the interval.

Tickets, including meal, are priced at £15 and can be obtained from our box office (01777 817275) or via our web site (www.evplayers.org.uk). Please book early to avoid disappointment

BOUQUETS AND BRICKBATS

At the year end it may be fitting to hand out some tributes and condemnations. Here are just a few: Bouquets to Tickhill Town Council and DMBC for adding welcome sparkle to the town centre over Christmas and also to all the businesses, premises and houses that carry illuminated Christ-mas trees for our festive pleasure. Bouquets to all the many organisations in the town providing such a wide range of assorted ac-tivities. To mention just two: The Footpaths Group that keeps all the footpaths open and in good condition by walking them all and liaising with farmers and DMBC to see that they are all kept accessible. Also the Local History Society for its excellent archive of Tickhill’s past and its inter-esting web site, talks and trips. Brickbats to all the Litter Bin avoiders who think pavements and people’s gardens are the proper places for their discarded cans, packets, plastic bags and half eaten takeaway food. And to the few irresponsible dog walkers who do not clean up the mess that their pets leave. Bouquets though for all the volunteers who remove litter whenever they can in order to keep the place tidy. Bouquets too for the shopkeepers in the Market Place who regularly sweep the pavements in front of their premises, but . . . Brickbats for those who, instead of disposing of the sweepings in a bin bag, just brush the rub-bish into the gutter or drains thus contributing to flooding when it rains heavily. Bouquets to all carers who look after the ailing, disabled, elderly, house bound or confused with no reward and little recognition. Their noble self sacrifice for the welfare of others deserves more support than the State seems able or willing to provide. Bouquets to the Tickhill in Bloom volunteers whose efforts bring welcome colour to the town centre and to flower beds elsewhere in Tickhill. Brickbats to the thieves who steal some of those plants for their own selfish gain and the mo-toring thieves who steal parking places in the town centre and car park reserved for the disa-bled. Also the fraudsters in anonymous white vans who tour estates early to steal the bags in-tended for worthy charities.

Alas all these bouquets are verbal phantoms with not a floral tribute in sight. But perhaps the recipients may be pleased to know that their efforts on behalf of all of us are genuinely appreciated. Thanks to all.

T ickhill Horticultural Society Our December speaker Desmond Mossop demonstrated how, with the right equipment, the filling of hanging

baskets is relatively simple. With committee man Keith Hall as guinea pig he proved a good teacher and then the two of them “taught” Ray Hill and Karen Williams how to do theirs. An interesting evening producing a few laughs, and we appreciated Desmond’s dona-tion of a basket filled with yellow primulas as a raffle prize, (because my wife won it!)

Our January meeting is of course the AGM on Thursday 26th starting at 7-15pm in the Meth-odist Church Schoolroom. During the meeting speaker finder Eric Brough will reveal what he has in store for us through 2012. The second half of the meeting will be a social with a quiz or two, free raffle, and a pie and pea supper. Any members, or prospective members, not on the list for a pie should speak to Gillian Hill on 743317 to place an order.

The Horticultural Society Committee would like to thank all members for their support through 2011 and wish everyone “Happy Gardening” in the New Year.

The chairercise has been a great success and hopefully will continue next year.

The next TARA meeting will be held on the 25th January 2012 at 6-30pm, please feel free to come along.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the coming year.

W hat has happened since the 2007 floods?

The Parish Room was full for the public meeting organised by the Tickhill Residents’ Association on 8 December. Our guest speaker was Richard Ward, Drainage Engineer from Doncaster Borough Council.

Richard began by giving us the background to the issue. Doncaster has experienced 12 major flood events in the past 100 years and many minor ones. It is estimated that over 20,000 proper-ties in the borough are potentially at risk and, according to the Environment Agency (EA), about half the borough is in a ‘flood zone’. The EA is responsible for main rivers and manages pumping stations and floodbanks to minimize the risk of them overflowing. Action to tackle the danger involves a number of partners such as the Borough Council, the Environment Agency and the Internal Drainage Boards.

Since the disaster of 2007, the council has responded by implementing the national policy statement on development and flood risk in 2008 and developing its own supplementary plan, adopted in October 2010, as local policy to determine planning applications appropriately. The Highways Department took back in house responsibility for gully cleansing in 2008 because the outside contractor was considered unsatisfactory and new equipment was purchased; there has been a 76% reduction in complaints since. £105k has been spent in Tickhill, including new sluice gates on the Mill Dam, as part of repair schemes following the floods. However, it is now difficult to obtain further funding from the EA for more improvement schemes.

Flood Action Plans have been produced for each neighbourhood, with Community Flood War-dens in place. A Multi-Agency Forum brings together all partners, including the Emergency Plan-ning Team, to ensure that everyone cooperates. The EA has spent about £20m across the bor-ough to reduce future dangers. However, challenges remain, such as the balancing of demands for development and regeneration against the risk of floods (an issue for the planners), the impli-cations of climate change (we are seeing more incidents of high intensity rainfall in dry summers) and the new responsibilities for the Council as the ‘lead local flood authority’. The 2007 floods are thought to be a one in 100 years (or more) event – we cannot prevent all flooding!

In the subsequent question and discussion session, when specific problems around St.Mary’s Road, Wong Lane and Paper Mill Dyke were raised, a number of points emerged:

Watercourse maintenance is not the Borough’s responsibility Funds to rebuild a wall in the Lindrick area have been refused by the EA but DMBC will try again DMBC is aware of the excess water coming under the railway embankment into Paper Mill

Dyke and will look into this There appears to be a section of inadequate pipe in St.Mary’s Road, which will be investigated Sewers are the responsibility of Severn Trent Water and pressure has to be put on them to play

their part in improving our situation

There is no specific budget for flood mitigation in the borough; officers have to seek funding elsewhere. If match funding can be found, there is a greater chance of success.

Overall this was a constructive meeting, with the promise that local issues would be further investigated and local knowledge welcomed.

M others' Union A large contingent from Tickhill attended a very atmospheric Dean-ery Advent Service at

Conisbrough. We were greatly welcomed as usual and completely overwhelmed by the re-freshments! The collection was given to the MU Overseas Fund. At this time of year we are all thinking about the year ahead and looking back at the year gone by so in our January meeting on 10th Jan-uary we are hoping to remember some of our past Church highlights and also look forward to changes in the future. We hope to carry on our fundraising for MU projects at home and abroad in 2012 and are thinking about our Len-ten Project.

L es Francophiles de Tickhill The November meeting had unfortunately to be changed at the last moment, due to our speaker, Thierry

Viennois, being too unwell to travel. Instead, we saw a film about Monet's garden at Giverny, depicting its changing beauty throughout the seasons. Thierry is rescheduled to speak at our February meeting. Our Christmas celebrations will be on Wednesday 7th December. This is always an enjoyable evening with games, music and delicious food! All are welcome, with a £3 charge for visitors.

The film to be shown on 4th January will be announced at the Christmas meeting. With very best wishes to our members for Christmas and the year 2012.

For information please contact Mike Scragg, Tel: 750312

T ickhill and District Local History Society It seems odd to be reporting our November 2011 meeting in the January 2012 edition of this magazine but unfortunately our meeting date ( the 3rd Thursday of each month) is usually too late to include a report in the following month’s issue. No matter, our meeting on 17th November was such a cracker that it is still worth reporting. Debora

Moretti of the West Riding Archaeological Service talked to a packed audience about excavations at Rotherham Minster. Your scribe must admit that he did not expect this subject to be particularly interesting – how wrong he was. In a light hearted yet in depth talk Debora skilfully linked the archaeology of the Minster to the social history of ordinary people in Rotherham the early 19th century. The only problem for the Chairman was to control the number of questions the audience wished to ask at the end of the presentation. Thank you Debora for a really first class evening.

Many of you will have seen the article about Limestone Hill Mill in last month’s “Tickhill Today”. Thanks to Duncan and Imelda Dewar a few members of the Society have now had an opportunity to see the restored mill building which still contains much of the original machinery although alas not at present in working order. This was once one of 4 water mills in Tickhill ( 2 flour mills and 2 paper mills) and we can confirm that it is certainly well worth a visit. Small parties of about 6 -10 persons are ideal. Contact Duncan or Imelda Dewar on 07956 133972. The Society are supporting this project by providing display boards for the very considerable amount of material which Duncan and Imelda have collected.

Finally we wish you all a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR and look forward to seeing both members and visitors at our meetings in 2012. The first meeting is on Thursday January 19th when Mike Oliver will talk about the discovery of the Lindholme Trackway, a very early and little known forerunner of the modern railway system.

T ickhill Scouts We finished 2011 in a grand style. It all began with a sponsored sleep out for Safe@Last. The income from this coupled with the sponsorship of our pedal cars at Shennington meant that we were able to send a cheque in excess of £1000 to this very worthy chari-

ty. We continued with the sale of Where’s Whoolley search forms which raised around £400.

Our annual Carol Service was held with the kind permission of St Mary’s Church and the quiet encouragement of John Marsden. The service was led by two Explorer Scouts – John Brookfield and Sam Bennington – in a very confident manner. All the sections performed individually in the service including the Beavers who performed Kum Ba Yah in sign language and the Rainbows who sang Jungle Bells accompanied by the Brownies on recorders. The collection of about £75 has been donated to Children in Need.

The majority of the Explorer Unit turned up to go carol singing only to be taken to Xscape for an evening of snowsports. As we approached Christmas many of us went to Castleton to join in with singing carols in Peak Cavern. An enchanting evening where everyone gathers inside the cavern, drink mulled wine, eat warm mince pies and sing accompanied by Dronfield Brass Band. Our evening is further enhanced by climbing MamTor afterwards and investing new scouts. This is followed by birthday cake, hot dogs, soup and hot drinks in Mam Nick Car Park. It sounds quite strange but is really very enjoyable.

The new year beckons and as I have said we will be celebrating 50 years of Scouting in Tickhill. Bob Kitchen. Group Scout Leader.

M USIC FOR ALL The November concert given by Tickhill Music Society continued their fine tradition of bringing quality music to our doorstep. This is their 35th year and the season’s programme looks well set to continue the high standard, variety and range of

entertainment which is their hallmark.

It started memorably with an event in the Parish Church when the organist and Director of Music at Worksop College introduced us to the polished young singer Laura Hocking. With a beautiful voice, great presence and stunning looks her varied programme showed that a very successful career in music beckons for her.

Back in the normal venue of St Mary’s school hall in October there was delightful entertainment from four young women, two singers, a pianist and cellist. Their wide choice of items ranged from Vivaldi to Bernstein’s West Side Story, with some theatricals in between. At one point costume was donned for a sprightly duet from Hansel and Gretel and the singers’ acting talent was much in evidence. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

November brought the three young musicians of the Rhodes Piano Trio (piano, violin, cello) and very good they were. Three works from Austria, Germany and France sampled the 18th century Classical period, the 19th century Romantic era and early 20th century style. Superb precision and musicianship of a high order which earned enthusiastic applause.

The Christmas Social event, free to Members, is always a relaxed affair. This time principally a local pianist, but also with readings. After the wine and mince pie interval comes audience participation as they choose and sing favourite carols. And there is a bumper raffle.

The new year begins with a Piano Recital, which will include Beethoven’s “Pathetique” sonata, and in February the intriguing sounding She’Koyokh Klezmer Band - that sounds to be something different! March brings the renowned Ensemble 360 who have visited several times, always exceptionally good value. This time in Sextet format with Brahms as the principal work.

Another contrast to close the season, with tributes to Edith Piaf and the outstanding jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, star of the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Great variety, something for everybody and top quality from a friendly society.

You do not have to come to every concert but it is better for the future of the Society if you can. Why not try it? You can call the Concert Secretary on 01302 742612 or visit their website www.tickhillmusicsociety.org

Tickhill Town Council

2011 is now behind us and we look forward to a year of celebrations with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games.

December for the Council saw a very successful turning on of the Christmas lights and the late night shopping in Tickhill. Our best dressed window competition judged by the Rev. Hartley and his wife was won by Reloved Interiors. Well done. There were four highly commended; Flower Hill, The Little Sweet Shop, Les Petite

Infants’ and Eleda Interiors. Apparently it was a close run competition. Congratulations to all. The competition was entered by most of the shop keepers and it is good to know we have such good local shops, where possible please shop locally.

During the past few weeks it has been brought to my attention the amount of “dog foul” we seem to be acquiring in the town. I will remind all who walk dogs to please clear up after them, as the dogs cannot do it themselves; it is unfair to other uses of public places to subject them to such waste. Please be responsible dog owners and walkers.

Our Council meeting dates for 2012 are advertised on the notice boards; and I would remind you our minutes are in the library and are also on the Website: www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk

The website has proved to be a useful source of information, listing forthcoming planning applications and details of financial transactions, amongst other details. If anyone has any contribution they would like to make to the website please make contact either through the website or with me by e mail. [email protected]

Also our caretakers are at the end of the phone: Beth: 07926810229 Jamie: 0796808016 Bookings for the Pavilion can be made with either Beth or Jamie.

There is nothing more to say other than, Mayor Cllr R Hill, Town Councillors, Caretakers and I the Clerk wish you all a very peaceful New Year.
