Nighttown was featured last week in Scene Magazine'sfeature story "A Patio For Any Occasion". With all ofthe rain we've had lately, the segment on Nighttown'spatios is perfect. Don't you agree?

"Nighttown at the top of Cedar Hill in Cleveland Heightsseems to build new patios by the day, and many ofthem are covered, allowing guests to dine alfrescowithout the fear of being screwed by Cleveland's fickleweather."

FRANK MORGAN "SOUND OFREDEMPTION" & RICHIE COLE/JACKIEWARREN DUO$15.00 Monday 7/20 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Exclusive Ohio Screening of the new Frank Morgan Documentary:"Sound of Redemption". Following the Film a live performancefrom Richie Cole-Sax, & Jackie Warren-Piano.

Additionally there will be commentary, and brief talks fromReggie Marshall (Frank Morgan's agent), Richie Cole, and JackieWarren, who all worked with Frank Morgan. Frank played atNighttown on several occasions.

Frank Morgan was a prodigal alto sax player who, likeso many of his fellow musicians of the era, saw hiscareer plagued by drug addiction. What sets Frankapart is not just his exceptionally beautiful, classic altoplaying, but also the amazing fact that he survived 30years of revolving door incarceration and drug abuseand went on to a much heralded comeback career inthe last 22 years of his life. His story is one of brilliantpromise in his youth, a journey through the depths ofhell, and redemption through his art.

The documentary film tells the story of his life andtransformation through interviews with fellowmusicians and people who were close to him. Theseare intercut with footage of Frank, and tracks of hisvery emotional music. Holding the story together isfootage of the preparation and performance of a

tribute concert planned for a prison. The years Frank spent in San Quentin StatePrison were significant because there were so many great musicians “inresidence” there that the far-sighted warden of the time allowed them to form abig band, known as The San Quentin All Stars. People came from all around theBay Area to hear them play. Frank was proud to be in that band, and doubtlessrefined his skills as a musician in the company of the other great players servingtime for narcotics related charges.

Once free, Frank Morgan proselytized against drugs and played music that movedthe critics and public alike. Decades after the release of his first solo album, Frankbecame a star at last. His true love, artist Rosalinda Kolb, helped him come backand stay straight. In 2007, he met the young Grace Kelly, a saxophone prodigy. With no children of his own, he saw in her his legacy. He introduced her to thepublic at his gigs, and gave her all he could of his wisdom and love in the lastmonths of his life. Frank Morgan passed away in late 2007.

Dynamic straight ahead jazz when NYC guitarist and Cleveland Native returnsfor hometown gig.

“one of the finest straight-ahead jazz guitarists on the current NYC jazz scene.”- Robert Silverstein, MWE3.com

From his fresh interpretations of jazz standards, to his lyrically evocative originals,Brooklyn-based guitarist Rick Stone is an artist with a clear musical vision. Hisfluid, full-bodied sound pays homage to the great jazz masters of the past whilemaintaining a personal style with a contemporary edge.

Rick is a respected teacher at Jazzmobile, BCM, Hofstra and other. His trioperforms regularly at the Garage, the Bar Next Door and other NYC venues. In2010 and 2011 he toured Italy extensively as a guest artist and clinician.

Rick’s latest CD Fractals (2011) features his working trio with bassist MarcoPanascia and drummer Tom Pollard. Says Tim Fischer in Just Jazz Guitar “Stonecomes across as a solid bebop guitarist, updating his harmonic and melodiclanguage to include the developments of the younger generation of New Yorkguitarists. Odd-time modifications to standards, wide-interval exercises, and exoticmodal intros are just a few of the more modern devices Stone explores throughoutthe album.”

Rick Stone began playing guitar at age nine in his hometown of Cleveland. Hedeveloped an early affinity for the blues, but it was in the mid-seventies that hispassion for jazz was sparked after hearing a live performance of saxophonistSonny Stitt. His musical quest led him to Berklee College of Music and then on toNew York where he found a fertile and stimulating environment in Barry Harris’Jazz Cultural Theatre. While studying with the legendary pianist, Rick honed hiscraft sitting in alongside veteran players like Tommy Flanagan, Lionel Hampton,Clarence “C” Sharpe, and Junior Cook. Then, under the tutelage of jazz mastersJimmy Heath, Ted Dunbar, Donald Byrd, Tony Purrone and Hal Galper, he earnedhis M.A. at Queens College.

Soon Rick was developing a reputation in his own right, leading all-star groups withmusicians like Kenny Barron, Eric Alexander, Vernel Fournier, Richard Wyands,Ralph Lalama, Dennis Irwin and Billy Hart in performances at Carnegie Hall’s WeillRecital Hall, The Smithsonian Institution, The Blue Note and Birdland. Hisrecordings Blues For Nobody, Far East and Samba de Novembro have achievedwide critical acclaim.

STANLEY JORDAN$20.00 Friday 8/21 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets

Mack Avenue recording artist and Virtuoso Solo Guitarist back at Nighttown fora great Friday night!

In a career that took flight with immediate commercial success and criticalacclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonicmusical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be itbold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisationalworks—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners onbreathless journeys into the unexpected.

Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on theguitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan'sinnovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While ahandful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence.

But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. Hismusic is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination oflisteners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordanwanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied pianoprinciples to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melodyand chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It alsoallows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar andpiano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range oftonal colors—that’s why I do it.”

To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He hasperformed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord JazzFestival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s hecollaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakeyand Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. T

Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album "Friends"was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Jordan came to prominence with the release of his 1985 album Magic Touch, arevolutionary project that placed him at the forefront of re-launching legendaryBlue Note Records into a contemporary entity in jazz and beyond, as alsoestablished the then-twenty-something Jordan as among the most distinctive andrefreshing new voices of the electric guitar.

In 2007 Jordan signed with Mack Avenue Records and released State of Nature in2008 and Friends in 2011. For Friends, he invited musical guests includingguitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Stern, Russell Malone and Charlie Hunter; violinist

CD Release with North Coast Acoustic Guitar Master!

Dan was eleven years old when he took his father’s old ES-335 out of the closetand started to play for the first time. Inspired by his older brother, an accomplishedelectric guitarist in his own right, and by his father, Dan quickly became enamoredwith the guitar and has since dedicated himself to becoming the best player he canbe.

Dan's earliest influences were mostly rooted in blues, so he initially set out as anelectric guitarist playing in the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, and JimiHendrix. As a teenager Dan began to branch out into jazz, and acknowledgeGeorge Benson, Joe Pass, and Django Reinhardt as major influences to this day.

It was about two years ago that Dan heard Chet Atkins play for the first time and hewas immediately hooked! Dan immersed himself in learning as much as hepossibly could about Chet’s amazing technique, phrasing, and beautifularrangements, which then led him to discover the great Tommy Emmanuel. One ofthe highlights of Dan's career has been playing with Tommy, and he's also had thepleasure of sitting in with renowned jazz guitarists Frank Vignola and VinnieRaniolo. Other influences of Dan's are John Knowles, an exceptional guitarist thatreceived the honorary Certified Guitar Player (CGP) award from Chet, and themodern master Pete Huttlinger.

Dan has also gone back to study some of the original masters of the style such asthe incomparable Merle Travis and Jerry Reed. He continues to be inspired by theirplaying and he's working on creating his own exciting style blending traditionalfingerstyle guitar with a more contemporary approach.
