Congratulations to the 5,540 independent retailers who’ve taken on the challenge of the Retailer Incentive Program. For the period from July-September, 2,218 retailers met program requirements, sharing almost $1.9 million in commission bonuses. We congratulate each of you and acknowledge our top performers on page 6.

Another 1,840 retailers would have received a bonus by simply meeting the instant ticket activation guidelines. It pays to activate your instant ticket inventory promptly. As you see, this small change can make a big difference.

First Quarter Results: Retailer Incentive ProgramAfter the first three months, 40% of Retailer Incentive Program participants earned a commission bonus. These 2,218 independent retailers shared almost $1.9 million in incentive bonuses.

The vast majority of independent retailers signed up for the Ohio Lottery’s incentive program, which kicked off July 2.

The October-December incentive period is now in progress, with the next period, covering the first quarter of 2018, right around the corner. Keep up the good work!

Didn’t meet incentive qualifiers in Q3 of 2017? Approximately 33% of incentive program retailers secured the required sales increase, but missed one or more qualifiers, leaving $679,511 in bonuses behind.

Most retailers who missed the qualifier did not activate their instant ticket deliveries in a timely manner.

The Lucky OneWagers: $1• Customers can place a wager between $1 and $50.

Wager choices are $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $25, $30 or $50.

How to Play and Bet TypesCustomers have up to 3 ways to play.• Each ticket can have between 1 to 3 plays from

each bet type: Lucky Number, Odd/Even and Low/High.

• Lucky Number: Choose one Lucky Number between 1 and 36 or use auto pick and let the terminal choose your number. A $1 winning wager pays $24.

• Odd/Even: Choose the Lucky One number drawn to be odd or even. Select "odd" for a chance to win if the Lucky One number drawn is odd; select "even" for a chance to win if the Lucky One number drawn is even. A $1 winning wager pays $1.50.

• Low/High: Choose the Lucky One number drawn to be low or high. Select “low” to wager that the Lucky One number drawn will be from 1 to 18. Select “high” to wager that the Lucky One number drawn will be from 19 to 36. A $1 winning wager pays $1.50.

Dawn Roach has served as sales representative for Tiffin’s Pit Stop #1 and Pit Stop #2 stores for the past 5 years. During that time, she’s gotten to know store employees well.

“They’re always up for any promotion,” says Dawn.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season last year, the two Pit Stop stores placed a stand-alone ticket display filled with holiday games by the counter. The effort captured their customers’ attention and encouraged impulse purchases. Pit Stop is a model retailer, getting all new games on the shelves and ready for sale as soon as they are delivered.

“They understand that people want the new stuff,” says Dawn. “They take really good care of their customers.”

Pit Stop #1 opened in 1975, followed in 1984 by Pit Stop #2. The family-owned stores were operated by founder Ronald Kies until a serious accident sidelined him in 1997. Today, his daughter Kim Herman oversees operations and works closely with her team of managers and staff.

“You can’t do good things until you have a good crew underneath you. I couldn’t do it without them,” says Kimmy Klingshirn, who has managed Pit Stop #1 for the past 15 years. She joined the business in 1993 right out of high school, learning essential business skills on the job. She’s one of several employees who have more than 17 years with Pit Stop.

What’s most impressive is the staff’s deep understanding of customers’ needs and playing preferences. What are their customers’ favorite games?

“The new ones,” says Kimmy. “We know when there’s something new coming out to leave space in the dispensers for new games.”

Pit Stop #2, located near the Heidelberg College campus, is managed by Elke Bryant, who started working part-time at the store in 1989. She became Pit Stop #2’s manager in 1994.

Elke says instants are the big driver of her store’s Lottery business and $5 games are the most popular. While there’s interest in Mega Millions, Powerball and other draw games, her customers tend to favor instants and their odds of winning.

Queen of Hearts, Cashword and The Price is Right® games were among the store’s most popular this past summer.

Pit Stop’s customers pay attention to changes and new products.

“We have customers say ‘we saw this ad,’ and have customers look online to see what’s new,” says Kimmy.

Kimmy stresses the need to clarify so you know exactly what the customer wants. That often means asking additional questions. She gives the example of someone asking for $10 on the Powerball.

“Did you want draws or plays or that type of thing?” she says.

Kimmy and Elke pay attention to behind-the-scenes business processes that make their Lottery business run smoothly. The managers do a daily review of instant ticket inventory and deactivate their instant tickets daily, before closing time.

Both know the potential consequences and financial liability in not taking that step.

Owner Kim Herman works closely with managers Kimmy and Elke when important business decisions must be made. She says they are like family.

“Elke and Kimmy have really been the backbone of the business,” she says.

The owner and managers of Pit Stop, who operate two family-owned gasoline-c stores in Tiffin, know the value of teamwork. Keys to Success• Taking time to teach new employees about

Lottery. New employees cash tickets and sell instants first. Getting employees used to using the terminal to sell draw-style games takes a little more time, says Elke. “Treat your good employees well,” she says.

• Clarify and ask questions so you really know what your customers want. You may want to repeat back your Lottery customer's request so you get it right.

• Keep track daily of instant ticket inventory. Deactivate your instant ticket inventory if you close your store for the night.
