BEEFED UP CATALOGUE AT KARAKA The biggest change from last year=s Ready To RunSale was the total of 494 entries in this year's cata-logue, the largest since 2001, with 200 horses morethan last year. AIt's a strong catalogue, with the tophorses getting good prices, and it has definitely been abuyers' sale this year, which has suited me,@ ChrisMcAnulty said. The leading buyer of the two-day salewas Queensland-based agent John Foote, with sixpurchases totaling NZ$895,000. Foote was buying onbehalf of a selection of Hong Kong and Australian cli-ents, and his top bid was the NZ$210,000 paid for lot 343, a gelding by My Halo out of the O'Reilly mareJust Polly. AThe sale was very, very good for the righthorses,@ said Foote. AA big factor in how horses soldwas how they worked and how they looked. If theybreezed well and then had the pedigree to match theysold very well.@ Commenting on the view of manybuyers that statistics belied the overall strength of themarket, he added, AThere was nothing wrong with themarket, there were a good number of buyers here, andthe quality was definitely as good as previous years;there were just too many horses.@

In the final analysis, 257 of the 494 catalogued lotswere sold for an aggregate of NZ$14,215,250, up 35percent on last year's turnover of NZ$10,511,000 for175 sold. The final sale average was NZ$55,312, downeight percent from NZ$60,063 last year, with a medianof NZ$32,000 (down 20 percent on $40,000 last year). The clearance rate improved to end the sale at 59 per-cent. NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela said thecompany is satisfied with the results of the past twodays. AThere's been a recurring message from buyersthat they're happy with the quality of young horsesthat they've had to choose from, and there's beensome good competition,@ Vela said. AIt seems that therejust wasn't sufficient demand to absorb the quantity ofhorses we had to sell.@

In 1970, the year Secretariat was born, theaverage number of starts per runner per year was ahealthy 10.22. Forego, born that same year, ran 57times, including 18 starts in 1973. But even thosenumbers, remarkable by today’s standards, don’t putthe mighty Forego in the same league with some ofthe true iron horses in the sport’s history. Hall ofFamer Stymie started 131 times. In 2009, the averagenumber of starts per horse was down to 6.23, a39-percent decline over the 1970 numbers. The TDNtakes a comprehensive look at why.

AROUND THE WORLD

NJ HORSEMEN REJECT HANSON REPORT Re-sponding to a recommendation by New Jersey Gov.Chris Christie=s advisor Jon Hanson that Thoroughbreddates in the state be reduced from the currently legis-lated minimum of 141 days to 59 days, the New JerseyThoroughbred Horsemen=s Association and the Thor-oughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey issued apress release late Tuesday that Aresoundingly rejected@the plan. AThe most recent recommendations fromChairman Hanson would destroy Thoroughbred racingand breeding in New Jersey,@ said John Forbes, presi-dent of the NJTHA. AA solid live-racing calendar withample racing opportunities is the foundation this indus-try is built on. Live racing is the life blood of our indus-try. To reduce our calendar from the statutory require-ment of 141 days to 59 would take away too manyjobs from New Jersey citizens working in the horseracing industry. For this reason, these workers wouldhave no choice but to leave New Jersey andlive/work/race in surrounding states that schedule yeararound Thoroughbred racing with solid purses sup-ported by numerous revenue streams, including casinowagering and slot machine wagering at racetracks.@According to the NJTHA/TBANJ statement, if Gov.Christie accepts Hanson=s recommendation regardingthe Thoroughbred dates, there would be grounds for alawsuit, as the legislation on the books mandates 141live Thoroughbred racing dates through 2016, and noless than 120 thereafter. Forbes added that, while thenumber of live racing dates was not up for discussion, the New Jersey horsemen have been open to the con-cept of running both Thoroughbred and harness meetsat Monmouth Park. AWe were willing to embrace theidea if it was done correctly, and providing that it didnot negatively impact either breed,@ said Forbes, butadded, AIn no way did it mean we would accept a re-duction of the statutory 141 days of live Thoroughbredracing. We are willing to work with Gov. Christie andMr. Hanson to further study this concept, as long asthe overall result is in no way detrimental to New Jer-sey's racing and breeding industry.@ Forbes concluded,ANo one in the Thoroughbred industry wants any of thisto happen. In fact, we are saddened by the lack ofcommitment to our long term viability shown by theappointees of the Executive Branch. Hopefully, theGovernor will not accept this recommendation by theHanson Commission as it would be the last nail in acoffin labeled New Jersey Thoroughbred racing andbreeding.@ To read the complete NJTHA/TBANJ state-ment, click here.

RACING NSW GAINS WIN IN FEDERAL COURTRacing New South Wales secured a key legal victoryover corporate betting agencies Betfair and Sportsbet inan Australian Federal Court Wednesday, reports Racingand Sports. The court handed down a unanimous rul-ing, allowing the NSW racing au-thority to impose a 1.5-percent taxon turnover from all wagering oper-ators covering NSW racing. Thecourt=s decision upheld an earlierfinding that the legislation underwhich the tax is imposed isvalid. The court also decided thatRacing NSW had not engaged in aconspiracy to allow Tabcorp andNSW bookmakers to avoid payingturnover tax. The race fields legisla-tion enabling Racing NSW to chargea product fee based on turnover was introduced inSeptember of 2008. Sportsbet and Betfair, who hadargued that the fees were discriminatory, have 28 daysto appeal yesterday=s ruling to a High Court. "This is the biggest payday for the 50,000 partici-pants in the NSW racing industry,@ Racing NSW ChiefExecutive Peter V'Landys told Racing and Sports.According to V=Landy=s, the ruling will release A$120million in back payments received from corporate book-makers pending the result of the court appeals and themoney would go to increased purses, infrastructure andincreasing wages of industry workers. "We wanted certainty and this was the only way toget it," Racing NSW Chairman Alan Brown told Racingand Sports. "This is a win for the NSW racing industryand a blueprint for the rest of Australia." "We have a couple of options,@ Betfair's AustralianChief Executive Andrew Twaits told Racing and Sport.AOne is to run a fresh case on appeal [in High Court],another option is to go to the ACCC [Australian Compe-tition and Consumer Commission] with some compel-ling evidence of anti-competitive conduct. We do thinkwe have a strong claim and the fee is manifestly un-fair.@
