NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

edwIn MIller & son enrIco Placed 2nd In cusbc adulT youTh doublesRIVERSIDE — An email was received from Edwin Miller bearing the news that he and his son,

Enrico bowled in the CaliforniaUSBC Adult-Youth Scholarship Doubles. They came in second place out of 22 entries with total score of 1404. Enrico had games of 116-138-124 for 378 and Edwin himself, 216-268-179 for 663 and their handicap of 363.

The proud father added, recently Enrico bowled a high game of 182 during his youth league and is averaging over 130. The young bowler is getting close to a 200 game.

Right after Edwin’s email, came a news release from IBC (International Bowling Campus and USBC about two coming Youth bowling tournaments. North Pointe Junior Gold Championships July 15-17 and USBC Youth Open Championships July 18-28, both in Detroit. I forwarded this re-lease to Edwin with hopes he could prepare his son to take part in both tournaments in near future.

The North Pointe Junior Gold Championship has a record breaking 2328 entries and to accom-modate that many they are using 6 bowling centers in suburban Detroit. The youth bowlers are competing for nearly $275.000.00 in scholarship in 15Under boys and girls classes and 20U boys and girls classes. On July 15-17 all are bowling 5 games qualifying each day for 15 games total with one in every 7 bowlers advance to bowl 5 more games on July 18. Then the top 64 bowl additional 5 games with the top 16 with 25 games qualifying total go in match plays on the 19th.

The USBC Youth Open Championship will start on July 18 in Sterling Lanes which is one of the 6 centers used on July 15-17 Junior Gold Championship Qualifying. The youth bowlers compete in 4 players Team, Doubles, Singles and All-events. The prizes are estimated $90.000 Scholarships awarded in 4 age-based divisions - 8Under, 12U, 15U and 20U. The tournament will run from July 18 to 28.

Both tournaments will give Edwin Miller the awareness on how many games the youth bowl-ers would have to go through in completion. Edwin said he hopes Enrico will bowl in one of them someday.

SAN BERNARDINO — A crowd of about 60 Citrus Belt officers, directors, and bowlers gath-ered at the Elk’s Club in San Bernardino last Saturday night for the Citrus Belt’s annual Hall of Fame dinner. President MIKE RADDEMAN was program emcee with introductions by PHOSIE LOTZE and CURT SNYDER. Awards were presented by MARY MARGARET HAMNER and PAM MEEKER. Our event chairperson was NITA SCHMIDT.

Two bowlers were inducted into the Hall of Fame: Anita Murtishaw (superior performance) and Frank Weiler (meritorious service). Anita has been a Citrus Belt star bowler for about 20 years. She has averaged 200 or better most of those years. She led all association women in average two times, with her best being 216. At the time that 216 book average was an association record for women.

Anita bowled an 848 series about ten years ago. It is still the highest three game series ever bowled by a lady within the Citrus Belt. She has bowled three certified 300s. Anita and husband JIM MURTISHAW tied a national USBC record a few years ago when they both bowled perfect games as teammates in the same league and in the same game. They were the second couple to ac-complish this feat. Anita is grateful to husband Jim for his support and son MATT MURTISHAW for nominating her for the Hall of Fame.

Frank Weiler was inducted for meritorious service. Frank has been an association volunteer since 2000 and is currently a Vice President. He has been a Citrus Belt delegate to a dozen national ABC and USBC conventions. He is proudest of the fact that he has only missed two quarterly asso-ciation meetings in 14 years. Frank has worked numerous Citrus Belt tournaments over the years. The Citrus Belt conducts no less than seven tournaments each year.

Mr. Weiler has been writing for the BOWLING NEWS since 2002. Since 2009 he has been writing articles on a weekly basis. His articles have also appeared in such publications as South-west Bowling News (Arizona), Stars and Strikes (Texas), Ten Pin Alley (Nevada), and The World Bowling News (Northern California). Frank also appears on JOHN SOWELL’S Web Site: “[email protected]”.

Frank has won five national writing awards from the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) and one from the California Bowling Writers (CBW). He served on the national Board of Directors of BWAA and currently serves on the board of the International Bowling Media As-sociation (IBMA). He also is on the board of the CBW. Frank is grateful to P.J. BUCKNER, LEE FITZGERALD and BOBBY LYONS for nominating him.

President Mike Raddeman wishes to thank the BOWLING NEWS for supporting the Citrus Belt and it’s bowlers.

Mitch Beasley speaking about Track bowling balls at Bowl Expo 2013

I am a bowler first and a writer second. Therefore, I love visiting the bowling ball company booths. I want to find out what new balls are coming out and how they will help my game. My most interesting conversations were with “reps” from Lane Master, Storm and Track.

When I stopped by the Track booth I had a chance to speak with MITCH BEASLEY. I hope Track management realizes that Mitch Beasley is an outstanding representative for their company. I know Mitch is an excellent bowler and a success-ful PBA competitor, but he is much more. He really knows his product (Track bowling balls) and was able to communicate that knowledge clearly and concisely. I really enjoyed listening to Mitch and learning about Track bowling balls. His explanation of Track’s ball number coding system was easy to understand and will be helpful to me when shopping for a ball in the future.

Each Track ball is numbered or coded from 100P to 912T. The higher the first numeral the higher the performance level of the ball. The ending letters (A, C, P and T) represent the ball movement that can be expected after you release the ball.

With an “A” ball (e.g., 910A) a bowler can expect an extreme move at the breakpoint. An “A” ball has an “angular” move. A “C” ball provides a strong continuous motion at the back end of the lane. A “C” ball is consistent. A “P” ball is a polyester finished black sparkle ball with a pancake core, making it ideal for picking up spares. The “T” ball (e.g., 300T, 503T, 706T, and 912T) provides traction going through the oil. The new Gen ET (extreme traction) cover stock will give the competition “HOOK ENVY.”

Next time I hope to tell more about my conversations with other exhibitors, including PBA stars like Norm Duke and Pete Weber. My thanks to Mitch Beasley for sharing his knowledge and the BOWLING NEWS for giving me the opportunity to de-scribe my experiences at the Bowl Expo trade show.

BAKERSFIELD — Tony Rose left youth bowling with a bang! Competing in his last youth tournament, the JWTC (Junior World Team Challenge) the weekend of June 22-23, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Rose and his teammates won the event coached by his UNLV coach, Joey Shugart.

This caps off a surreal last couple of months for Rose who graduated from UNLV May 19th, was hired for a dream job at Expedia.com and was able to stick with his love for bowling and compete again this year in the JWTC tournament which has been held in Las Vegas the last couple of years.

Rose said he has competed in this particular tournament for seven years. The last three years he was coached by UNLV’s Shugart and his team also made the finals each of these years placing fourth, then last year second and then winning the championship this year.

For their 2013 Championship win, the team won $2,250 plus trophies and medals. Tony’s teammates on this year’s winning team, The Shenanigans, were Teddy Lucente from Elmont, NY/UNLV; Tiffany Cox from Las Vegas, NV/University of Arizona; Tony Rose from Bakersfield, CA/UNLV; Dan Hansen from Boise, ID/Boise State University; and Erik Mattewson from Las Vegas, NV/UNLV. Coach Shugart is the UNLV Head Coach for Bowling.

JWTC had (30) teams competing this year from all around the world (an international event that is WTBA certified). The event organizers are Steve Weinman and Ty Treddenbarger. This year’s event was the 18th annual and it took place at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The for-mat was Day 1 for qualifying (5 regular games, 6 Baker games to qualify and then they were cut to Top 8 teams in each division). Tony’s team qualified for the semi-finals (Top 8) in first place! Next was Semi-finals and their qualifying scores do not carry over so they all started at 0. They ended up bowling the second seed (Gardena Bowl) for the title match where Tony’s team won 377-292.

Rose also placed second in the limited division Singles which won him $150 in scholarship money. And, Rose and his doubles partner, Dan Hansen were the Limited Division champions in Virtual Doubles (using their team scores).

Ely Cruz Wins $9,175 in ABTA July Las Vegas Open at South Point(L-R) Leny Uruttia 5th, $800 -- Will Samson 3rd, $1,625-- Bob Smith ABTA Tour Director, Nympha Cruz proud wife and ABTA supporter of Champion Ely Cruz $9,175, Jimmy Wong-runner up $3,250 and George Alford 4th $800.

LAS VEGAS — The South Point was our host and again a Great Event for our Members in our Annual July Las Vegas Open over the July 4 Week-end. It was wonderful. We had members return from all across the United States and Germany totaling 579 entries with Saturday Eve Finals.. The cut scores, Men were + 45 on Wednesday, + 97 on Thursday, + 79 on Friday, + 75 on Sat-urday, and +84 for the re-entry squad. For the women it was +34 on Wednesday, + 47 on Thursday, + 47 on Friday, + 69 on Saturday, and +9 for the re-entry squad. The Super Seniors added to the board were Tim Austin +72, Sam Sanicolas +72, Jack Trongale + 67, and Mike Bousquet +67. For the women it was Rosita Gonzales +40, Anita Smith +31, and Si-errie Herredura +31. Super se-niors are men 63 and over, and for the women, you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 109 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

High qualifiers for the tournament—Mark Fisser for the men with a + 167 and for women it was Akeyla Basto +124. They will get a paid en-try into a future regular ABTA event. At each tournament, our top seed draws the Match Se-ries, and this time it was worth $5,000. Mark drew a 597. We had one bowler who shot that and it was Dustin Keener from Georgia. It was his 1st tourney in 12 months so he got 25% of $1,250. That means the pot will start at $4,760 at Friendly Hills, and surely hit $5,000 Cap. In the 3-6-9 Roll-off we saw both Ed Abarca and Ed-gardo Talavera miss in the fi-nal round. They split the $100 consolation and we will go for $2,100 at Friendly Hills.

In the optional doubles, leaders were Val Wise and Justin Ziegler with a 1466

ABTA Visits Friendly Hills/Whittier -- One Day Semi -- Frozen Handicapfor $170. Finishing in second place was the Eguilos Boys, Christopher and Danny, with a 1459 for $150. There was a total of $1,970 paid out in doubles and 25 paid spots with low to cash of 1372.

This would bring us to our top 32 Match Play finals. In the first round, the fifteen los-ers were Mark Fisser, Fred Go, Jessica Ting, Carlos Umana, Maria Luz Cruz, Beth Wilcutts, David Dittlinger, Kent Mar-uyama, Faye Josafat, Dustin Keener, Chonthida Athip-rayon, Justin Ziegler, Christo-pher Eguilos, Steve Brode, and Stan Por. Each will get $240. In the second round, the eight losers were Mike Bousquet, Kelly Wynn, Danny Eguilos, Randy Lund, Chris Marquez, Fel Garcia, Vuong Do and Beth Velasquez with each of them getting checks of $280. In the third round, the four los-ers were Andrew Toro, Marvin Galsim, Edmund Del Mundo, and Val Wise with each getting checks for $350.

We were down to the final five bowlers. The weekly hors-es paying a low of $49, Wil-liam Samson, to a high of $379 for Leny Urrutia. In one of the matches, we saw our fourth seed Jimmy Wong bowling the twenty-ninth seed Leny Urrutia. Jimmy advanced with the win in this match. In the other match, it was the eighth seed William Samson bowling the twenty-fifth seed George Alford. Will would advance to the semi-final. Finishing in 4th and 5th place were George Alford and Leny Urruita, they each got $800.

Our semi-final match was set and would pit the fourth and eighth seeds from the semis against each other. In the weekly “horses”, we would see William paying $49 and Jimmy paying $94 if they would win their match.

This match was another one of the low scoring matches as it was a battle to see who could survive the long day. William would jump out to a lead of 36 pins after four frames but a string of 3 opens allowed Jimmy to jump out in front and not let go as he came from be-hind to take this match with a 169/210 to 144/201 to advance to the title match. Will would go home in third place, back-to-back weeks, He is Roll-ing NOW!! And take home $1,625! Jimmy advanced to the title match and was your horse winner for $94.

The title game was set at South Point Hotel & Casino Lanes. It would be top quali-fier Ely Cruz going against the fourth seed Jimmy Wong. As is our custom each week we would start with the photo, taken by Chris as the cam-era man was bowling for the title. He forgot about it and was walking away so we had to remind him to come back and take the photo to start the match. Jimmy would start with a strike and Ely came up with an open and spare. Jimmy would follow with two opens and Ely came up with a spare and open.

After 3 frames Ely had a 23 pin lead. Jimmy would get a spare and strike in his next two frames. Then Ely came up with a spare and strike of his own. Jimmy followed up with another strike in the sixth for a double but could not trip the 4 pin in the seventh and settled for a spare to trail by 10 pins. Ely came up with a strike in his seventh and left the 6-10 in the eighth frame. Then Jimmy would open in the eighth frame to trail by 24 pins. That was all Ely needed as he would fin-ish out clean. Jimmy was not able to overtake him, and Ely would win his fifth ABTA championship with a 188/233

to 171/212. He would take home $6,500 for the victory, an additional $1,150 for Cash and Carry, $250 for booking and staying at South Point, $300 for qualifying on Thursday, $900 for bowling 29+ squads in past year, $175 for wearing his ABTA Shirt to give him a total of $9,275. Jimmy would take home $3,250 for his sec-ond place finish.

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

Many a mother worries if her youngster seems too in-terested in a sport, be it football, baseball, field hockey or bowling.

She may rightfully feel that a sport could have a dis-tracting influence on the youngster when he or she should be concentrating on the basics of education. There’s little need for concern, if the sport is bowling.

If boys and girls are bowling enthusiasts, they must learn the scoring and mathematics necessary. The math end needs close attention, and it can become a bit com-plicated when the youngster gets involved with averages, high games, high series, point systems and the many other statistics connected with bowling. In addition, they learn to count quickly and true, just to make sure opponents are doing it properly.

So, to keep their place as young bowling experts, they must pay heed to math.

They want to be able to decipher entry blanks and rule books, and they want to read the accounts of leagues and tournaments and the exploits of their bowling heroes in newspapers, bowling publications and magazines, so they have more concern for reading. Whether they know it or not, they become better readers, and more acquainted with words.

They learn how to win, how to lose, how to organize, how important team efforts are, and how it is just as im-portant to be an individual. And they learn that, sometimes all too painfully, and they learn without undue pressure on them.

Boys and girls interested in bowling can’t bowl all they want since most allowances won’t stretch that far. Many become a little more eager to do some extra chores around the house to earn some extra money to bowl some extra games.

Some take on a part-time job, and many keep score

at tournaments. There, mothers have little to fear, a bowling center is a good place for a youngster to be.

Youngsters interested in bowling can’t help but have their competittve spirit around. And even it they’re not the greatest bowlers, they can become involved with the organizational structure, and even if they show little interest there, the sport becomes a social outlet and education.

They will develop a de-sire to win that will usually carry into the classroom and into life. Bowling is a mirror of iife and they can relate whatever they do to bowling in some way or an-other.

Few young bowlers get into trouble. Few juvenile offenders have discovered bowling. This is a tribute to those juniors who bowl, the people who guide them and the bowling centers in which they roll. Most bowl-ing centers welcome ju-niors with open arms, but don’t baby them, and insist upon proper dress and ac-tions. Young people learn a little about rules in regard to other people’s property, and also about discipline.

One of the great beau-ties of bowiing for young-sters is that it wll be there always. Some bowl the rest of their lives. Many go through gaps, where, be-cause of schooling, jobs, marriage and family obliga-tions, they’re out of bowl-ing. But most come back at one time or another, the fun and lessons they learned in bowling still stored away.

Books and bowling do go together, math, history, finance, competition, sat-isfaction, all in a pleasant atmosphere answering a social need with a physical outlet, are combined.

Mothers, and fathers, will worry. Those worries are cut to a minimum if that girl or boy finds bowling as an outlet. And you never have to look very far.Last Weeks Solution 2 5 1 8 6 9 3 7 4 7 9 3 2 4 1 8 6 5 8 4 6 7 3 5 9 1 2 1 3 2 5 8 6 7 4 9 5 7 4 9 2 3 6 8 1 9 6 8 1 7 4 5 2 3 6 2 5 4 9 8 1 3 7 3 1 7 6 5 2 4 9 8 4 8 9 3 1 7 2 5 6

BURBANK — While chatting with one of my fellow bowl-ers this morning, I found myself revisiting the reason I am so in love with bowling. My friend was disillusioned with the league we were bowling and felt no excitement in being there. This saddened me. It made me realize that while I am fond of bowling because of the integrity of the game, the people I associate with through bowling and the joy of introducing the game to the youngsters, it is my attitude that enhances my experience.

I look forward to my league days, no matter in which center I am currently bowling. Lane dressing does not ef-fect my game, I do. I started in the sport long before ag-gressive balls, plastic coated pins and synthetic lanes. I was fortunate enough to be brought up under the tutelage of people who made themselves accountable for how their game scored.

Extreme hook balls and exercising excessive speed were not quite as essential in those days. Accuracy and consistency was the name of the game. I certainly do not wish to discount the ability of todays bowlers. They rock! However, their attitude is definitely different than my own. I think I learned to appreciate other bowlers abilities, not criticize them. Consequently, I was not comparing myself to others, I was stretching to reach my personal best and could enjoy my fellow bowlers and learn from them as well. Boiled down, as my kids remind me, I live for bowling. I only hope all of you can ‘love’ bowling and pass that joy on to others.Sunday Night: (scr) John Ross 266, Nicole Nelson 189, Setu Molia 657, Peggy Eklund 546. Both of these great people go way beyond in this town to help support the sport we love. Let’s give a little back so they have less worries and stress as-sociated with Judy’s recovery. I’m sure she is already des-tined to be the next women’s bowling champion.

SNBT always puts on a good tournament, but with this added incentive, we would love to see everyone’s smiling faces on the lanes on July 21st and 28th.

If you can’t bowl and still want to make a donation, you can contact Brenda Blandina at (702) 633-4979 and she will inform you on where the dona-tions are to be sent. See you all there!
