LET’S TALK ABOUT BUTTONS AND PATCHES - As I begin today’s column, I would like everyone to know that I in no way intend to disparage, make fun of, or un-derestimate the role that buttons or patch-es play in everyday life. Many of the things that Laurie and I own, at the very minimum, have at least one button on them, but sadly, the patches have dwindled down to nothing.

As a young boy growing up in the late 50’s and early 60’s, I was very tough on the cloth-ing that I wore. I can remember a time when the majority of the pants I had in my ward-robe had patches on both knees as my knees were generally the first part of my anatomy

to hit the ground. You know, zipping down the slide on the playground on your knees at what seemed to be fifty miles per hour, well, let’s just say that stopping at the bottom wasn’t the easiest thing to do. In fact, there are probably two blue colored grooves on the slide all these years later since blue jeans were (and still are today) my clothing of choice. At the time, I think my mother bought the gi-ant economy size packages of iron on patch-es, two and three at a time. Mom always said that I would wear out the knees, and my older brother would wear out the butt on his pants. I think that in itself tells you who the energetic one was (just think about it for a moment).

You don’t see many patches on clothing items these days, but buttons, there’s something to talk about! I remember that in the 70’s, during high school, jeans and pants in gener-al ditched the zipper for the then ever popu-lar button front. Honestly I was never really a fan, but in order to “fit in” with the rest of the crowd, I caved and bought a pair or two. Besides, they looked cool with the platform shoes I wore at the time. To say that it was frustrating when it came time to go to the bathroom is an understatement, if you know what I’m saying.

In today’s world, buttons are not specific to just clothing. When your alarm goes off in the morning, you reach over and hit the button to shut it off. You get out of bed and

stumble your way to the kitchen to hit the button to start the coffee maker, that is, if you don’t have one of those automatic timer jobs. When getting dressed for work, you use buttons to make sure that your shirt doesn’t fall off, unless you wear a pullover type shirt. When leaving the house for work you hit the button to open and close the garage door opener, that is if you have one. Defrost, heat-er, and air conditioning buttons on your au-tomobile serve a useful purpose, weather de-pendent, of course.

While at work, and if you employ the use of a computer, then buttons, buttons, buttons, all day long. Buttons on the telephone. Buttons on the ATM at the drive through. Buttons on the credit card machine. I mean, where would we be or what would we do without buttons? To me, they seem to be just as im-portant as the air we breathe or the food and water we eat and drink.

Finally, at days end when you turn out the light to go to sleep, you once again reach over to hit the button to set the alarm for the fol-lowing morning. You might even hit the but-ton on your Sleep Number bed, as referenced in an earlier writing, for the guaranteed “best night’s sleep ever” (so I’m told). Patches may come and go, but the button is here to stay. Who’s buttons will you push to-day?

-Kevin
