Valley to Vineyards Trike tours coming to townBy Laura Sykes

Peter Tullia, along with wife Katherine, have big plans to expand their Colonial Motor Lodge business in Scone with the advent of their new venture - Valley to Vineyards Trike Tours. Commencing in early December, the business will tap into the unique experience that trike tours can offer the region. “There is nothing that resembles these tours in the Upper Hunter,” Peter says. “As our business operates around hospitality, (not so much as tourism), in the Scone area, we thought it would blend in well with our motel as we now have a tourism venture to offer our patrons and visitors to the area.”

With a list of potential destinations already including local hotspots such as Hunter Belle Cheese, Pukara Olive Grove, Two Rivers and Pokolbin Vineyards, Glenbawn Dam and many other significant pubs and attractions along the way, Valley to Vineyards Trike Tours is already shaping up to be a smashing success.

The inspiration for the venture came from the couple’s holidays in Fiji. “High-powered trikes were used from Denaru in Fiji for island trips,” Peter says. “Recently my wife surprised me with a trike tour from our home down to some local vineyards. The thing that struck me was that the trike operator had to come up from Blacktown to take us. After some discussion with the trike operator the seed of the idea was sown.”

The trike itself is currently having final touches completed before tours commence. The vehicle, Peter says, is like a car with three wheels. Seating between two and three people, the trike can be ridden with a car licence; however driver accreditation and a bike licence are required for anyone wishing to take passengers. For larger tour groups, specialised operators from near Gosford will be on hand.

“I think riding a trike gives you a great sense of freedom,” Peter says. “It’s great to see a diverse section of the area in a few hours in a way that is a little different - a trike can offer that.”

Carrot’s success is continuing to growBy Laura Sykes

Armed with a Cole Clark acoustic guitar and a stomp box, Darryl ‘Carrot’ Bowen has fastly become one of the most popular entertainers in the Upper Hunter and further afield. From humble beginnings, ‘Carrot’, as he has become known, has become a local story of success. Carrot learned his first guitar chords in 1995, when his older brother showed him how to play classic favourite ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’.

“After playing the chords over and over again, I decided to learn a few more chords and along with that came new songs which I would play and sing quietly and continuously to myself in my bedroom,” he says.

“Learning a song these days is a lot easier with the internet!” Darryl laughs. “I used to have to listen to a CD over and over again to work out the chords and words.”

These days, he says it’s as simple as looking at a website… and maybe watching a few YouTube cover versions for inspiration. It’s this approach that has allowed Darryl to create such a varied repertoire for his shows, singing everything from old rock to country, to modern rock and pop songs. “I learn songs that are on the radio, or that people may request for me to play that I think would suit my voice and suit an acoustic version of the song. All my songs have an acoustic touch to them.”

It took a bit more than bedroom practice however, plus some inspiration from his father, Peter aka ‘Carrot Senior’ and just a little bit of Dutch courage, to convince Darryl to begin singing for friends and family at parties. “It’s probably something I picked up from watching my father as a kid; he’d get up at parties and think he was Elvis - with or without his teeth in!”

Darryl has worked as a plant mechanic at Mt Arthur Coal for the past thirteen years, where he juggles dayshift with his performing commitments on weekends; an arrangement which he says suits him perfectly. Other than his love of music, Darryl holds a keen interest in sports and keeping fit. “I have grown up playing sport all my life, playing either cricket in the summer or rugby league in the winter. I have since retired from both, now having finished both with 1st grade premierships! I still like to keep fit by doing boxing a couple of times through the week at the local PCYC as well as going to the gym. I also like to play a bit of touch in the summer, and am really getting into water skiing.”

Performing, though, will always hold something special for Darryl. “The part I enjoy most about playing is the atmosphere. Music can really liven up an event! When I start off playing, you generally have people just kicking back having a few drinks and nibbles, so the songs I start off with are generally more laid back. Then as the night gets older and people have had a few more drinks, I pick it up a bit and then by the end of the night you have people everywhere singing and dancing and having a good time! Because I play a variety of songs the crowd can be mixed from young to old, I don’t mind as long as people are having a good time.”

New exhibitions at arts centre open this SaturdayThe Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre is proud to present the Muswellbrook Local Art Awards for 2013. The awards are an annual event highlighting the depth and talent of the Upper Hunter Region’s extraordinary creativity. With prize money totalling $5,000.00 spread across five categories, over 150 entries have arrived at the arts centre this week from artists based in Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter Shires, making the task of this year’s judge Dr John Barnes, Director of Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, very difficult indeed.

Each of the five sections has three prizes: first, second and an encouragement prize, the encouragement prize being for the work by an artist with promise. The prize monies have been provided by this year’s sponsors: BHP Billiton Mt Arthur Coal, Elks Enterprises Pty. Ltd., Hunter Valley Printing, Max Watters OAM, Muswellbrook & Districts Camera Club, Scone ADFAS Inc., The Estate of Isabel Esther Bellis and The Viola Bromley Bequest. The art works can also be for sale, so the exhibition is a great opportunity to not only appreciate the artistic endeavours of our local artists, but to also support them by taking a work into your home. For the artists there is no greater acclaim than to have someone want to live with their creation.

The judging will take place on Saturday with Dr Barnes announcing his decisions at the opening night which

commences at 6.00pm on Saturday 2nd November 2013 at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre. The opening is free and will feature refreshments supplied by our opening night sponsors Hunter Belle Cheese, The Mad Hatters Café and Two Rivers Hunter Valley Wines so please come along and support your local artists.

The recent sad passing of one of Australia’s greatest abstractionist artists, John Peart, is the impetus for this exhibition of paintings from the Max Watters Collection which will open along with the Muswellbrook Local Art Awards.

The exhibitions are on display at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre until Sunday 19th December 2013.

‘The Narcissist’ is set to sizzle By Laura Sykes

MATS is turning up the heat this November with ‘The Narcissist’; a new production that adds something a little different to the society’s usual repertoire.

creative arts

The Muswellbrook Amateur Theatrical Society has been an established thread in the fabric of the town since its formation in 1950, and over the years has forged for itself a reputation of putting on shows that are not only great entertainment for the whole family, but keep on getting bigger and better each year. This year’s play, ‘The Narcissist’, breaks the mould with a rating of MA15+.

MATS director Ryan Langford, says that they decided to go with a more mature content this time around, after coming across the script, which was written by Australian playwright Stephen Carleton.

‘The Narcissist’ is all about Xavier, a ‘self-absorbed, gay political spin doctor’ (played by Luke Cross), and his best friend Bronwyn, a ‘raucously uncertain interior design columnist prone to ever makeover and diet in the book’ (Alex Skailes). The pair take a bet on who can be the first to bag a man by New Year’s Eve. Matters are complicated by the involvement of Xavier’s ex-boyfriend Jesse (Tim Lamacraft) and his new church-going, homophobic fiancé

Y’landah (Lisa Googe), as well as his extra sensitive metrosexual housemate Satchel (Nathan Siudek).

Macquarie Generation is sponsoring the production for the third time, after previously providing backing for ‘Annie’ in 2012, and ‘Oliver!’ in 2012.

“Rehearsals have progressed well over the months with significant improvements clearly visible over the last few weeks,” Ryan says.

“The actors have very much taken on their characters. The script has been challenging in some places. For example scenes with multiple separate conversations weaved in together. Ensuring that they flow and can be understood by the audience isn’t the easiest task. We also need to be sure the context of the script is clear and the acting suits what is being said.”

However it’s a challenge that everyone involved in the production is well able to overcome. Over the past fifteen years MATS has taken on shows on an increasingly larger scale than ever before, with great success. “We’ve been

able to purchase much of our own equipment,” Ryan says. “It’s great, because we can then reduce the cost for performances. Many other groups and schools in the area often ask MATS to undertake the technical side of their events as well.”

“We have a Facebook page ‘MAT SINC’ which gives the latest updates on current production, photos from previous production and future announcements. We hold our meetings on the first Monday of every month at 7pm. Meetings are held at the Boronia Building, next to the pool, Wilkinson Avenue Muswellbrook.”

‘The Narcissist’ will run over a total of seven performances, with opening night held on Thursday 31 October, at the Muswellbrook District Worker’s Club, followed by shows on the 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 November. All performances commence at 7.30pm, with tickets available for purchase from the club. At only $20, it’s a small price to pay for a great night out, with plenty of entertainment – and more than a fair share of laughs – in store.

Bitter and Twisted Festival

By Zack Phillips

On the 2-3 November, Maitland presents the Bitter and Twisted Beer Festival. This will be held at the Maitland Gaol and will bring together more than fifty types of boutique-Australian and international beers; tickets are $30-$40 on entry. With plenty of international cuisine to satisfy appetites; a Bavarian-beer breakfast along with the master class of food and beer matching lunch offered by esteemed local chef Gavin Forman from Old George and the Dragon, this sounds to be the typical Australian weekend.

As well as beers and food, there will be a line up of market stalls selling a variety of locally-grown foods, as well as homemade goods, fashion and artworks. Gourmet-food products will also be available for tasting.

There will also be a family day on the Sunday, with music, food and beer for the adults. Children haven’t been forgotten either, with face painting, balloon sculpting and roving characters. All people under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.

The festival will also feature a line-up of musical acts. These include sassy Sydney songstress and former Triple J unearthed artist, Lanie Lane, who has been confirmed as the headline act for Saturday. Twin Beasts and many other artists will be available on Sunday. Bluegrass, reggae, a didgeridoo artist and local Muswellbrook De-May will also be on show.

First sod turned on new student residenceConstruction of a new 63-bed, affordable residential student accommodation facility has commenced on Hunter TAFE’s Muswellbrook campus.

The project will provide additional capacity for the development of skilled labour in demand by the mining industry and allow for students from outside the Upper Hunter to pursue a trade appropriate for the mining industry.

The project is being jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund, Bengalla Mine, BHP Billiton Mt Arthur Coal and Glencore Mangoola Mine, in partnership with Muswellbrook Shire Council and the Hunter TAFE.

The Australian Government has contributed $2.7 million toward the student-accommodation project recognising the importance of building economic, productive capacity through skilling apprentices for the mining industry in one of Australia’s most productive coal basins.

The funding, confirmed at a sod-turning event at the construction site, was made possible through the mines’ Voluntary Planning Agreements with Muswellbrook Shire Council of $800,000 by Bengalla, $500,000 by BHP Billiton Mt Arthur Coal and $300,000 by Glencore Mangoola Mine.

Although the new residence will prioritise students under the age of 25 enrolled in the TAFE Mining Skills course, rooms will be available to other students enrolled at TAFE. The facility may also be used during holiday periods by students carrying out vacation work at local mine sites.

Mayor of Muswellbrook Martin Rush welcomed the commencement of the project and congratulated a partnership between local, state and federal government and between the various local coal mines.

“It is an unprecedented level of shared investment by government and industry. It will help build productive capacity and productivity for the coal industry, assist with building the critical mass of students necessary to establish a centre of learning excellence and help transform Muswellbrook into a key centre of regional education”, Cr Rush said.

Construction of the new student residence is scheduled for completion in August 2014.

Photo: (L-R) Mt Arthur Coal apprentice Gareth Godde, Glencore Mangoola Operations Manager Tony Israel, Federal Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon, Muswellbrook Shire Council Mayor Martin Rush, BHP Billiton NSW Energy Coal Asset President Peter Sharpe and Bengalla Operations Manager Dan Janney officially marked the start of construction of the new 63-bed student residence on the grounds of Hunter TAFE’s Muswellbrook campus. The project is a result of collaboration between government and industry.

Summer WellnessAsk yourself these questions: • Are you often tired or lethargic? • Do you regularly suffer from bloating, diarrhoea, constipation or other digestive disturbances? • Do you get recurrent headaches? • Do you regularly suffer from muscle aches and pains? • Does poor short-term memory and concentration affect your ability to function at work? • Do you have allergies or sensitivities? • Do you suffer from depression, anxiety and/or mood swings?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of these questions, your body may be overburdened by toxicity.

Toxicity – A Modern Epidemic

The modern world is full of many man-made chemicals and it seems that we are not only what we eat, but also what we drink, breathe and touch.

The good news is that your body has an amazing ability to eliminate these toxins through its in-built detoxification systems. However, your body can become overwhelmed with accumulated toxins over time. If you haven’t been feeling quite right or you answered yes to any of the above questions, then perhaps you should consider a healthy step-by-step detoxification program to give you back your bounce!

You Are What You Eat

• Eat plenty of fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. If you can, buy organic, if not be sure to wash them well. • Drink 2 to 3 litres of filtered water per day and avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages, soft drinks, dairy, and commercial fruit drinks/juices. • Enjoy a wide variety of fresh, healthy snacks and avoid overly processed and refined snacks such as chocolate, bakery products, chips, and lollies.

Safe and Effective Detoxification

‘Live In It To Win It’ competition winners announced By Laura Sykes

What would it take to convince you to try living five days and four nights inside a car? Perhaps, the dream of owning your very own brand new vehicle at the end of it? During the month of October this year, favourite local-radio station 98.1 Power FM once again hosted their smash-hit competition ‘Live In It To Win It’ with great success!Teaming up with Muswellbrook Nissan to offer a first-place prize of a brand new Nissan Micra, worth $17,000, five couples once again faced off to compete for the top, living five nights and four days within a Nissan Micra and tackling challenges along the way, covering everything from battling it out in handball to dancing Gangnam style.

It came down to just two couples; mum and daughter duo Lucy and Zenda, and sisters Jessie and Lisa. On Friday 25 October Muswellbrook’s Nissan saleyard exploded into screams of excitement as Lucy and Zenda were proclaimed the winners and Adrian, general manager of Muswellbrook Nissan, presented the keys to Lucy, who could barely contain her excitement.

“It means everything. It’s really good to know that (we’ve been) living in a car for five days and we’ve actually come out with something.”

When asked if she’d ever owned a new car, Lucy laughed and replied, “Nope, never.”

Power FM regularly hosts competitions of all kinds so if you missed out this time, make sure you tune in to 98.1FM and listen out for more great offers and competitions around your town.
