experiences.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL The beginning of the year is always a busy time so thank you so much to all our parents who have come along to information sessions and 'Getting to know you interviews'. The partnerships we build between school and home ensure our students enjoy the best possible support and, as they transition to the next year level or begin their journey here at Orchard Grove, shared information ensures a seamless and smooth beginning. These two weeks have certainly set the road map for the exciting year ahead. Student Leaders Our student leaders received their badges last Friday at Assembly and then were able to celebrate at a morning tea in their honour with their parents. We are very proud of this lovely group of young leaders who I am sure will lead the student body very well in 2018.

School Council The nominations for school council closed last Thursday and we had six nominations to fill 6 positions. This meant that these vacancies could all be filled, so there is no need to go to an election this year. The following parents are now on Council for a two-year term: Rodney Mudford, Drew Sinclair, Marika Jagow, Craig Williams, Jess Bentley and Sandy Grosz. Fiona Ross and Trevor Hookey still have one year to go on their term.
The following staff members, Leeanne King, Michelle Ogilvie, Toby Keen, Matt Anthony and myself, join the above-mentioned parents to make up the School Council for 2018. Thank you to all those above who give of their personal time to be on school council, it is much appreciated. The AGM will be held on 21st March, followed by the induction of the new council and office bearers’ process.
Well that’s all from me for now.
Have a great weekend with the family.
Talk soon.

Interschool Swimming Sports Our year is often dotted with monthly events and celebrations and February is no exception. This week a wonderful group of swimmers represented Orchard Grove at the annual swimming sports. Mr Liston was made to feel proud of the efforts of all students and particularly pleased with the positive attitude, effort and spirit with which all students competed. Among many fine efforts and results, Lilian (5SW) swam a mighty backstroke, Aleisha (4MA) swam a very strong butterfly, Madeleine (5GS) brought home a relay team with a strong swim, Liam (6SG) and Corey (6KH) swam brilliantly and the 12 year old girls relay team were wonderful! Congratulations to all those who participated and we look forward to hearing of the results in the next round at the division level. Thank you to all the parents who helped on the day with particular mention of Sally Payne who accompanied the group on the bus. Whole School Athletics Carnival Our students have been training hard for the Whole School Athletics Carnival that was held on Wednesday this week. It is always a wonderful event. There are so many examples of students trying their very best for their house. Mr Liston again was so impressed by the level of commitment and effort by many of the students on the day. It is a huge task logistically to organise a whole school event and 'hats off' to Mr Liston for making it such an enjoyable day for us all. Thank you to all our parent volunteers and the efforts of the staff on the day as well. We particularly appreciated the fruit that was supplied for staff by Sally Payne and Jess Bentley. How very thoughtful. Unfortunately we had a glitch with the computer system on the day, so the results will be delayed and announced at Assembly next week on 2nd March. Chinese New Year What better way to finish our colourful and exciting week than with a visit from the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne and their Lion Dance troupe. The Chinese New Year is one of many celebrations we mark as a school every year. We value our diversity and to see the excited faces of the students welcoming in the New Year with the Lion dancers is wonderful. We are indebted to Mun and Ivy Chin for their support. They build our understandings of this important time and really enable us to be fully immersed with the whole experience. It is the Year of the Dog in the Chinese Lunar Calendar and some of the Year Three students have creatively responded to a challenge to create a kennel for Lunar the mascot dog currently living in the Art room. Well done to those fabulous creators and makers. The kennels made a lovely backdrop to the assembly. Ruby our School Therapy Dog, was also excited to be part of the celebration. Keeping our Kids Safe You will have noticed the banner on our newsletter about keeping your speed down to 15km “<15 one five keeps our kids alive. This is referring to the speed parent’s travel in and out of the school, particularly on the Holland Rd side. We will be continuing to run a campaign to keep top of mind that we need to slow down. We need to keep our children safe, so keeping to the 15km speed limit is a must, this will allow cars to stop.
