ANZAC CEREMONY Our Yr 6 school leaders attended the annual ANZAC ceremony at the Cenotaph in Glen Waverley on Wednesday. The event was led by Colonel John Coulson RFD Ed (Ret.) OAM, a Trustee of the Shrine of Remembrance. He told an emotional story about the Kokoda trail one of Australia’s most significant campaigns of the Second World War. A moving tribute. Our school leaders once again represented the school brilliantly and it was lovely to be able to lay a wreath in honour of our ANZACs’.

Just a reminder that next Tuesday 25 April is a public holiday due to ANZAC Day. No students are required at school.

EDUCATION WEEK 2017 – MAY 22-26 This year the theme for Education Week is ‘Healthy Mind Healthy Body’. Schools are encouraged to explore the theme with students and parents during Education Week using a variety of activities. This year we are holding an ‘Artists and Writers Festival’ as part of Open Night. Here is an outline of events held during the week:

Whole School Zumba Session: Physical activity promotes a healthy body! We will be kicking of Education week with some exercise. Dress in your active wear and join us (during assembly time beginning 2.30pm) for a fun fitness activity.

Family Invention Challenge: Challenging our brains fosters a healthy mind! Prizes for the best inventions. More details to follow in next week’s newsletter. Prizes for the most creative inventions judged by the whole school.

Family Art and Craft Activity: Mindfulness Activity for the whole family - Pom Pom creations! We are calling upon our families to make some pom poms for our whole school mural. The pom poms will be glued together to outline the word ‘Inspire’. The mural will then be displayed in the art room. ‘How to make a Pom Pom’ design and process, has been sent home with this newsletter. Whenever you have finished your creations please bring them in – we will need lots! We would love for each family to at least make one!

ARTISTIS AND WRITERS FESTIVAL – OPEN NIGHT – 25 MAY 6.30-7.30PM. Student art work showcased, students writing on display, junior and senior choir performances, Taiko drumming performance and lucky raffle!

PIECE TOGETHER PREP SESSION – MAY 5 On Friday May 5 we will be holding our first Piece together Prep Session - ‘Story Time’ session from 2:00-3:00pm for any 4 year olds. This session will be held in the library. Invite a friend and come along with your pre-schooler!

ASSEMBLY MONDAY APRIL 24 Just a reminder that there will be assembly on Monday April 24 beginning at 2.45pm.

FACILITIES UPDATE: LINE MARKING Over the school holidays we had line marking renewed in both car parks. Both car parks now have a clear orange drop off zone. This is the safe spot to stop and let your kids out of the car when dropping them off at school. This is the only safe spot to let a child out of a car, when you are doing a quick drop off and not prepared to park the car. I have noticed many parents letting their children out of cars, when they are waiting in line, prior to the actual drop off zone. This is really unsafe for our kids. Students do not develop peripheral vision till late primary school and can be easily knocked over by moving vehicles. Even if you are running late, it is much better to wait and let them out in the drop off zone, than rush them out of the car where they can potentially be hurt.

We are still waiting for more signs to be erected, which will help to further outline the ‘no parking’ zones. One major change to the Huntingdale Rd Car Park will be the ‘No Right Turn’ (new sign still to come) onto Huntingdale Rd when leaving our school car park. This will help traffic flow better in to and out of our school. It is also much safer for families exiting, as it is difficult to predict oncoming traffic. We ask that parents who need to turn right down Huntingdale Rd, please turn left first then right into a side street before safely entering Huntingdale Rd traffic. This will begin as soon as the sign is erected. Please abide by these changes. They have been made in the best interests for all.

STORMWATER DRAINS Our storm water drains have all been cleaned out. Apparently they were blocked with years of residue and mud. Fingers crossed our natural swimming pool will be no longer!

CONDITION ASSESSMENT REPORT – GRANT Late last year we were informed MWHPS will be receiving $25,000 for infrastructure repairs and works. This grant was based on an audit undertaken across all Victorian schools back in 2013. This money will go towards…

1) Fixing the embankment (current seating area – wooden seating) around the oval and the back of the cricket nets

2) Paying for the cleaning of the storm water drains 3) Repairs to various gates around the school 4) Fixing and replacing all of the corroded lights and light fittings in Building C

These items were all given a poor rating in the school audit. Works will completed this term.

SAVE THE DATE: Working Bee – Sunday May 7 (9-12pm)

Let’s celebrate Our school leaders attending the ANZAC ceremony this week The warm weather continuing Richmond continuing their winning streak!

Until next week,

Sharon

Do you have any of these at home that you no longer need?

In the Art programme this term we will be making pom poms for a special project during Education Week. If you have any spare wool at home that you no longer need we would love to have it!

We also need cardboard tubes from the centre of kitchen towel or wrapping paper. Unfortunately, due to health regulations we cannot use toilet rolls so please do not send those in.

Thank you! Claire Furlong

Thanks
