PARENTING SUPPORT Welcome to our weekly newsletter. This week’s ‘Positive Parenting Support’ article is called, ‘Parenting the in-between years’ This article focuses on the age from 8 to 12 years old. This time bridges childhood and adolescence. I particularly like the reference to parents to ‘shift gears’. Often as parents, we can become a bit static in our approach to our children and we need to constantly reflect and adjust our parenting style. UPDATES
Walk to school/Big breakfast: Please note our annual ‘Walk to School/Big Healthy Breakfast’ will be held tomorrow, Friday, May 19. Please see information in this newsletter. Thanks to Brooke Griffiths for coordinating this event.
Early Arrivals: Just a reminder to all families that children should not be arriving at school before 8:45am unless they are booked into before school care. Please support us with this school rule, as we are unable to provide adequate supervision before this time.
Cross Country: Tomorrow is our annual ‘District Cross-Country’ event. Students in years 3 – 6 who were successful in last week’s school event will be representing PFCS. Good luck everyone! Thanks to Brooke Green for her district coordination.
Parent Forum: Our next ‘Parent Forum’ will be held tonight at 7pm. My guests will be our specialist teachers. This will be a great opportunity to learn about what the students are doing in the arts, science and physical education. It would be wonderful to see you there!
KidsMatter: The ‘KidsMatter Framework’ is coming to Port Fairy Consolidated School. KidsMatter unites all the people that influence children’s well-being the most – families, school staff and the wider community. If you would like more information about this great initiative, please come and see me.
NED before BED: Please support us by encouraging your children to spend some time away from any electronic devices (including television) for at least 30 minutes before they go to sleep each night.
Parent Teacher Interviews: Parent/Teacher interviews took place this week. Thank you to my teaching staff for their time and commitment to the students at our school.

Foundation/Grade 1
In Reading we are learning about cause and effect in stories through books and real life
situations. In Phonics/Spelling we are learning sounds “L” & “V” and learning about
silent-e words (eg, bike). In Writing we are learning to write simple persuasive texts and
in Maths we are learning how to represent information in a picture graph.
Grade1/2’s
This week we had Parent/Teacher Interviews, thank you to all parents who made
appointments. In Writing we are learning how extra information is added to texts via
labelled diagrams. In Maths we are learning how to recognise, model, read, write and
order numbers up to 100 and beyond. This involves knowing how to break numbers into
tens and ones (36, 3 tens and 6 ones).
Grade 3/4’s
In Reading we have been exploring the comprehension strategy 'finding the main idea'.
Students are determining what a story is mostly about. In Writing we have continued to
explore persuasive techniques by examining different forms of advertisements and the
techniques they use to persuade us. Students have also been discussing the effects
modern day technology is having on the way consumers are viewing advertisements. The
students have particularly enjoyed comparing older advertisements with ads they see
today. In maths we have begun exploring measurement, with a focus on length this
week.
Grade 5/6’s
This week students have completed further testing tasks and reviewed their work books.
Year sixes have their geography project due tomorrow. We welcome back Ms Smith to
5/6D on her 3 week teaching round. Good luck to our Cross Country representatives and
our socceroos!

Meals on Wheels—Volunteers
The Meals on Wheels program is coordinated from the hospital with volunteers from the
community. The school has taken on this program as it fits with our philosophy of being
involved in our local community.
It is a valuable program for our school to be part of and involves our school community
and the year 5 students.
Our turn for Meals on Wheels is the week starting Monday May 29th to the Friday. We
need a minimum of 10 volunteers. Each volunteer is required to have Working With
Children Check.
Below is the current meals on wheels roster, if there is anyone who want to assist the driv-
er feel free to put your name down on a day that suits.
I would like to thank the students and members of the community that will be taking
part in the voluntary program.
Thanks, Bev Holcombe - Meals on Wheels Coordinator

no further bookings will be taken for that family, in the new term.
If anyone is experiencing financial difficulty, please make contact with either Jenni or
Mark.
Grants - We would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in writing grant
applications on behalf of the school. Please contact Mark or Jenni for further
information.
IT IS NOT OKAY TO BE AWAY
It is a legal requirement that children of good health attend
school everyday! If your child is absent from school at any
time please let us know so that we have a record of the
absence. The school strongly advocates full attendance and
being on time. ‘Teaching Time starts at 9!’
KINDER VISITS AND PARENT TOURS
Next Wednesday May 24th and Thursday May 25th children from the Port Fairy Kinder will
be coming to PFCS for their first visit. There will also be parent tours from the school office
starting at 9:15am. All 2018 perspective parents are welcome to attend these tours.
PRINCIPAL RECRUITMENT PROCESS UPDATE
Dear all,
Following the recent news of Mr. Chapman’s resignation from the position of principal,
the school council met with Lindy Sharp, Senior Educational Improvement Leader with
the Department of Education and Training, to discuss and plan the process of finding a
new principal.
The appropriate process has been commenced, with the appointment of a five member
interview panel, and advertising of the position. Applications will be reviewed by the
panel, followed by interviews of short listed candidates. The timing of the process has
been put in place such that, if a suitable candidate is found, an appointment can be
made ready to commence in the role by the beginning of term three.

COMMUNITY NEWS
The Film Fundraiser coordinator is Ebony Perrin
Dear Parents,
On Friday the 19th of May, we are encouraging all students living in Port Fairy to
walk to school. Students living out of school are more than welcome to join in.
There is several starting points and children may join in along the way (please refer
to map on reverse). The walk to school will be led by the teachers and they will
leave their starting points at 8am. Children can join in anywhere along the given
path.
Bus travellers will be involved in the Walk to School Day as well. The buses will drop
the Port Fairy Consolidated School bus students at the front of St.Pat’s, to be met
by a teacher. We will walk to school from there.
To coincide with Walk to School Day, a healthy breakfast will be provided for all
students at Port Fairy Consolidated School. The breakfast will be run by our
Parents & Friends Group and will begin at 8am in the hall. The breakfast will
consist of a choice of cereals served with fruits and yoghurt, toast with a choice of
spreads and egg & bacon rolls, with a mug of hot milo, chocolate or milk.
Any queries or concerns please see your class teacher.
The school would like to thank the Moyne Shire for providing funding for students
to enjoy the healthy breakfast.
Parents are encouraged to join in for the cost of a gold coin donation.
