We have a busy weekend inWashington, DC and in Virginia. I havejust been notified that President Bush hasnominated our featured guest speaker forthis reunion, Tom White, as Secretary ofthe Army. This is great news. As you areall aware, General White served with us inVietnam as a platoon leader for MCompany and K Troop. He is also the52nd Colonel of the Regiment. We areextremely pleased of his nomination andthat he will be our speaker for the week-end. See the details of his selection in thisissue of your newsletter.

Our basic and tentative schedule readslike this: On Thursday, August 2nd, therewill be the annual Marty OgnibeneMemorial Golf Tourney. Friday's activi-ties will be at the host hotel, The HyattRegency, Washington on Capitol Hill. Our

A trip to The Wall isnext with plans to deliver our Blackhorsewreath to the apex of the VietnamVeterans Memorial. After returning to thehotel, we will celebrate further with ourannual banquet. Iserved with How Btry, 70- 71, 1/11ACR and since the reunion in San Diego,

Ive been helping on the website in the areaof Research & Inquiries and Find a Buddyrequests. I was quite thrilled to be tapped forthe job when I received the database of all ofour members shortly after San Diego. Itbecame a passion for me and the missionwas to help our Troopers find buddies thathad lost contact for the past 30 plus years. Aprocedure was needed, created and imple-mented to contact, reunite and provideauthorized flow of information to answer therequests. Letters were sent, phone calls weremade and e-mails made the net smoke forabout 6 months, or so.

As the website became more visible, withthe addition of the Relatives of TroopersKilled in Action section, requests from the

families of our KIAs needing informationconcerning the circumstances surroundingthe death of their brothers, dads and unclespoured into my mailbox. The results werephenomenal, to say the least. Ruth AnnMaynard, sister of Roger Lee Byus, E Troop,KIA 24November69 and Melody LarkAnnis, sister of Robin Annis, HHTRegiment, KIA 4April69, attended thereunion in Buffalo. Ruth Ann Maynard dis-played the bronzed boots of her brother,Roger and obtained detailed information ofRogers last moments from fellow ETroopers that were with her brother!!!!Melody Lark Annis found the camaraderieof Blackhorse Troopers truly amazing.Unfortunately, the buddy that was with herbrother in the last moments, did not attendthe reunion, but has been in contact with hervia email. Our Honored Guests were truly

impressed with the camaraderie, fellowshipand sentiments of the 11th Cav. They werehonored, welcomed and very included in thespirit of the reunion. Allons!!!

I desperately needed help and enlisted theaid of Ruth Ann, Melody and Pete Echon, FTroop, 69- 70, to aid in responding to therequests. All adopted the Blackhorse battlecry with great vigor and responded to thecall. I am so proud to be part of this team. The results of our efforts have produced adefinite increase in reunion attendance ofbuddies, KIA families and first time atten-dees.

The article was about thePhilippines War (1899-1902) that haddragged on for two years whereby theAmerican public was tiring of this little guer-rilla war.

The commander, Brig. Gen. FrederickFunston devised a plan to end the fighting. He would attempt to capture the rebel leaderwith a small, hand-picked team behindenemy lines and capture the rebel leader,Emilio Aguinaldo. Capturing Aguinaldowould end the war. With 81 MacabebeScouts and four of his best officers, two ofwhich were brothers with the 11th Vol. Cav,he captured Aguinaldo, thus ending the war.The two brothers of the 11th Vol. Cav were:Capt. The following are some testimonials from the recipients of ourScholarships.

The 11th ACVVC scholarship has helped me greatly. Bothmy parents and I are truly grateful for receiving this money. Ithas helped keep down our out of pocket expenses and hasallowed me to spend more time on my studies and less time wor-rying about working to pay tuition and other expenses associatedwith college. I am truly grateful that I was selected for thisscholarship. Thanks a lot.

I am where I am today because of the support of my father (P/Sgt. Glenn E. Nick Nicholson, KIA 5/5/68 ), my mother, mywife, my two daughters and every elite group known as BLACK-HORSE.

I just wanted to say hello to all the Troopers with H/Co 2/11,1967-68, and express my gratitude for being a BlackhorseScholar ( 1972). I completed my undergraduate degree in 1991,with the help of a Blackhorse Scholarship. The 11thACVVC Scholarship means freedom. It is impor-tant to know that this Scholarship is provided by veterans whofought for freedom for others. This Scholarship means a type offreedom for the student. It means freedom from loans owed. Thisis a group who went through trying times and is now trying tomake it easier for some of their children. I want to thank the 11thACVVC for helping me pursue my goal of becoming a nurse andultimately a Family Nurse Practitioner.

The 3 preceding statements were thanks from one of our firstand one of our most recent Scholarship recipients. In their ownwords its easy to see what our contribution to their lives hasmeant to them.

We are getting ready to start another Scholarship drive andthis year its my goal as Scholarship Chairman to exceed what wehave accomplished in the past. This will be done the same waywe have done it in the past, with Blackhorse pride and com-mitment.

The mailing of the raffle tickets is complete. By now youshould have yours. This year we are including a total of threebooks of tickets in an effort to get the best effort of those whowill participate. I can send more so just let me know if you runout. The live and silent auctions will be a great way to add morefuel to the fire! The donations are starting to roll in. Some veryimpressive, hard to get, one of a kind items will be at the reunionto bid on. We Need More. Let me know what you have so we canput a description on the website. The donations that you make aretax deductible.

Your Officers and Board of Directors have been busy thinkingof new ideas to help the Scholarship awards grow this year. Oneidea is the using interest monies from our Certificates of Deposit(CD) for the Scholarship fund so we can either increase the num-ber of recipients or possibly increase the dollar amounts. In arecent vote of your Officers and Directors, the qualification ofexamining the parents finances has been eliminated. The studentwill be judged solely on his or her own merit. This was such arecent development that it will not be reflected (due to printingdeadlines) in this years Scholarship Application but I willinclude a note informing everyone of the change.

So please take out that checkbook, send in those raffle tickets, find those donations for the silent and live auctions and get themshipped to us. We can make this 100th Anniversary of our unitone that will be a great positive historic event that we can be partof and Blackhorse proud of.

2nd Quarter, 2001 Thunder Run

Greeting Blackhorse Troopers! What an exciting, fast-paced quarter

weve been through. Coming off holidayleave, the Regiment immediately deployedto the field to hone those highly perishablecombat skills that make us the most lethaldesert warfighters in our Army. We set thebattlefield conditions during two rotationsthis quarter that allowed the 3rd GreyWolf Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division andthe 1st Devil Brigade, 1st InfantryDivision to complete their training cycleand assume the position as our Armysmost trained and ready combat brigades. Inbetween all of this we deployed in mass toLas Vegas to celebrate our Regiments100th Anniversary and to enjoy the compa-ny of over 400 Blackhorse veterans whoattended the event. Just a few notes onwhere weve been and where we are going.

Blackhorse 100th AnniversaryOur 100th anniversary celebration in

Las Vegas in February was a tremendoussuccess. We could not have asked for amore spirited group of Blackhorse troopers past and present and their families togather under one roof as members of thisproud organization to celebrate our 100thanniversary. By holding the event in LasVegas, several hundred members of theactive regiment attended and benefitedfrom an enriching experience. OurTroopers cherished the time spent meetingBlackhorse veterans, and all gained a deep-er appreciation for what we do and who weare. Gene Johnson and the members of theWildhorse Squadron (1-221 Cav, NevadaArmy National Guard) did a great job asour hosts and reunion committee. If youcouldnt join us in Las Vegas, mark August3-5 on your calendars were going to cel-ebrate the Blackhorse 100th anniversaryagain in Washington, DC. Hope to see youthen. In the meantime, check out ourreunion photo gallery on the Blackhorsewebsite: www.irwin.army.mil/11acr.

Blackhorse Marathon Join us in the Mojave Desert on

September 16th for the second running ofthe Blackhorse marathon at Fort Irwin.Last years run was a tremendous successwith more than 80 runners from across theUnited States. This years marathon prom-

ises to be even greater. If you dont havethe time to train for the full 26.2-milemarathon, join us for the Blackhorse 5Krun that we will conduct while themarathon is running. Or if you prefer towalk the marathon, we have added a roadmarch category. Failing all of that, werealways in need of spirited, enthusiasticcheerleaders to motivate our runners alongthe course. Check out the Blackhorse web-site for more information on this greatmarathon.

Division CAPSTONE ExerciseEarly April found us back in the field,

this time to fight against the 4th InfantryDivision, Fort Hood, Texas, as it demon-strates for the world its leading-edge digitaltechnology. The Ivy Division is the U.S.Armys experimental division and is outfit-ted with the latest digital enhancementsthat provide never before seen battlefieldawareness. The soldiers from the FightingFourth were here to demonstrate the latestin battlefield technology, and it was our jobto fight this formidable foe with the cun-ning and tactical skill our Army demandsof its professional opposing force. TheIvy Division plannned on dominating thebattlefield. But, if there was a weakness inthe digital force, the Regiment exploited it,violently and victoriously, to ensure thatour Army invest only in the technologythat lives up to its potential. Our Troopersare well aware of the awesome responsibil-ity and they are trained and ready for anyfight.

Brave Rifles Rotation Before all of the elements from the 4th

Infantry Division leave Fort Irwin, the cav-alry troopers from the 3rd ArmoredCavalry Regiment will be here for theirNational Training Center rotation. This isthe first time the Blackhorse Regiment hashad the honor of meeting the entire BraveRifles Regiment on the NTC battlefield, and we look forward to the challenge.Following the rotation, a select group ofour brothers from the 2nd ArmoredCavalry Regiment Toujours Pret willjoin us from Fort Polk bringing together allthe ingredients necessary for a Cavalry tra-dition known as Lucky Sixteen. Thissplendid cavalry event comes around likeleap year and it will be a great opportunityto meet new friends and renew oldacquaintances.

Farewell Finally, we want to say happy trails to

CPT Jeremy Dobos who has given much ofhis personal time to make the BlackhorseAssociation strong and has assisted ourveterans whenever they called. Jeremy willattend the Intelligence Advance Courseand put his significant tactical experienceto good use in his next assignment. CPTJorge Castro, our Regimental PAO is thepoint of contact for any request to visit theRegiment. Contact him at (760) 380-5657.Please come see us if you traveling in thispart of the country.

From the Frontby the 59th Colonel, H Mike Davis

I saw the blood trails through themornings mist.

I swore I saw them! And so I did!And died a little insideBefore justifying my survival.Sixteen days and a wake-upAnd if God wills, I will have beaten the systemThat holds this youth hostageTo the horrors aging me

At twenty-one (21)Im thirty-seven (37) in the mirror!Thank Jesus its raining To hide my tearsMy fears of returning state-sideTo apathetic AmericansI can still see the blood trailsIn endless nightmares.

2nd Quarter, 2001 Thunder Run

Old US Highway 66. Doesthat say anything to you?

It sure does to me. Many call it Americasdriveway for (or something like that). It cutsacross the heartland of America from LosAngeles to Chicago through the Midwesternbreadbasket farm states. When I was a kidwe traveled it from L.A. to Oklahoma to seemy dads family out on the wheat farmwhere he was raised. My dad was a dustbowl Okie who rode the rails and migratedalong 66 to California during the Depression. Many of you have traveled it too. I wouldguess that youre probably old enough toremember the black and white TV series,Hiway 66. It was about two young guys intheir Corvette who had many adventuresalong that old highway before the interstatesreplaced it.

To me, Viet Nam Highway QL 13 is areminder of Highway US 66. Know what Imean? A lot happened along US 66 in thosedays that Ill always remember. Same withQL13 in Viet Nam. Some would say thesame of Highway 1 that went through XuanLoc to Da Nang and points north. I wasnever on it myself, except for one quick tripto Blackhorse Base Camp when I came intocountry. I went up to Quan Loi right awayand never came back. Anyway, a lot ofBlackhorse history took place along QL13.We even named our 11th ACVVC paperThunder Run in honor of the name wedubbed QL13. I guess the Blackhorse pass-ing through was like the roar of thunder in aheavy monsoon. Right? The convoys, thenoise, the ambushes, the dust (eating dirt -remember?), the mud, the outposts, themama-sans, the Lambrettas and red Honda50s, the villages, the fields of fire (clearingsmade that way by Agent Orange), the rubbertrees, the mines, the bridges, the arc lights inthe distance, the twisted French railroadtracks that ran beside the highway. I thinkthunder run had been a beautiful highwaybefore war and Agent Orange. Its probablybeautiful again now.

I think QL13 started somewhere downaround Saigon. I know we convoyed oncefrom Loc Ninh to Di An and took QL 13through Lai Khe to get there. Anyway, letstalk about those French railroad tracks Imentioned. Remember how twisted and

pathetic they looked? They were torn apartand laying alongside QL13 like the ghost ofa former age, a lost war, an old culture thatwould never come back. Whether that wasgood or bad, who knows? Still, I used to lookat those old tracks and wonder about lifealong that antique railroad in its heyday. Iimagined those French narrow gauge trainsrunning and carrying people and stuff allover Southeast Asia. Some people I knowthink we ended up like the French, leavingwith our tails between our legs. I dont buythat myself. I believe the place is a lot betternow than it would have been if we hadntcome along. Thats saying a lot because somuch craziness happened over there. Stilldoes, only not as bad as it was right after weleft. Check the people these days. Checkhow they love American GIs, even now.Take a trip over there and youll see. Checkhow they love jeans and American tourists.Check how they love American music.Check how they love American ideals likewanting freedom to come into the 20th (or21st) century. Check how they want to learncomputers and English, American English.W didnt count for anything? We didntmake the place better? Sure we did. (Ill stopthis now because Im getting in deeper thanI want).

Some of you were along one day whenour Combat Engineers were mine sweepingQL13 down from Loc Ninh and up fromQuan Loi. QL13 was a busy highway in thatarea. The Vietnamese were very impatientpeople. They were in a hurry to get places. Our mine sweepers were slow because theywere on foot, of course. This slowed trafficconsiderably. Then we had to stop to repair aculvert under the road which the VC hadblown the night before. We brought up anAVLB to lay across the culvert so trafficcould go by while our engineers laid a newculvert. Trouble came when the Vietnamesewhich had backed up behind our guys gotimpatient. They decided they couldnt waitfor us to clear the road of mines. I dontremember every detail, but I do rememberthat seven of those colorful Vietnamese

busses passed us by in a mighty hurry. Theyjust couldnt wait for the road to be cleared. You guessed it. We looked up after a fewminutes. About a mile ahead we could see anexplosion. We knew what it was. Somebodyhad hit a mine. We couldnt get up there tohelp them very fast because we still had toclear the road. Before we got to the explosionsite, we found three more mines in the road. When we got to the site we saw that the thirdbus in line had hit the fourth mine in the road. The other busses and traffic were very fortu-nate. They all should have been blown tosmithereens. But they werent. Only one busgot it. The other busses, trucks andLambrettas got off clean. The mined bus hadcasualties all over the place which I dontneed to describe. Pretty soon families got theword and came down from Loc Ninh. Not afun time.

There are plenty of fine memories ofThunder Run, of course. Yes, there are manygood memories from Viet Nam. Like the daywe came out of Cambodia. Were you there?Wed been in Cambodia for exactly twomonths. (Which is why were called 11thACR Vets of Viet Nam and Cambodia).President Nixon had finally allowed our sideto go into that Communist sanctuary. Hegave us two months to do what we could totake it out. Our guys did a lot consideringthat it was years late and we only had twomonths. I admit our troopers didnt take out100% like we wanted, but our side sure didslow down the communist side. We couldhave cleaned up the whole mess, but ourpolitical side decided to negotiate instead. But never mind that. QL13 was still our wayout of Cambodia. Not the way in. The FishHook was the way in. Coming out was a loteasier than going in had been. It was a prettycheerful day, actually, as I recall. We cameout of Cambodia and just kept on moving. We went on past Loc Ninh, past Quan Li,past Lai Khe and past a lot of old ambushand firefight sites too. Funny thing, we wenton past engineers that were actually pavingover QL13. Guess it wouldnt be ThunderRun any more. At least there wouldnt be somuch thunder. Our days in the AO wereover. We were going down to beat the busharound Long Binh and then start phasing outof country altogether. Took a couple more

years, but it happened. So, a lot happened along QL13, Thunder

Run. There are hundreds of stories that couldbe told from you troopers who made the run.Like the E Troop ambush near QL13 southof Quan Loi in August of 69 when JohnSexton was taken POW - and kept locked upfor 2 1/2 years in remote jungle camps inCambodia. Or like branching off QL13 atLoc Ninh to go up QL14 to Bo Duc and BuDop to clear that overgrown highway so theVietnamese could use it again. Stories aboutthat too. Or like convoying along QL13 to goon a rare stand-down, a once-a-year, if ever, happening to get the machinery operatingright again. Remember? I guess if most ofthe reminiscences at the reunions were justabout what happened along Thunder Run, itwould fill a year of talking and remember-ing. And for you troopers who didnt doQL13, you did Highway 1 or Another Run.Those were wild rides too.

One thing about Thunder Run, it wasalways a wild ride. You didnt always knowhow it was going to wind up, especiallywhen you ran into an ambush or had a fewRPGs aimed your way. But you sure knewwhere you were going when you were onthat run. Off the road you could lose yourway. I saw it happen. But when that track, that ACAV, M48, M548, Hog or Sheridanwas running down the center of QL13,whichever direction didnt matter, you knewexactly where you were headed. It was a rideyoull remember for a lifetime. When youcheck the masthead of this 11thACVVCpaper, youll remember. Maybe youll evenfeel a little nostalgia. Why not?

Life itself is sort of like Thunder Run,QL13. Many memories, many adventures, many experiences, many relationships. Itslike riding with the Blackhorse along thatRun - you can see where youre going. Juststay on the road, fix your eyes straight aheadand keep on truckin. And when it gets towhere the rubber really hits the road of lifethe wise trooper will examine his direction, check his map and see where he is on hisLifes Run or whether hes off the course forwhere he wants to go. When we considerthat every one of us is on the road of life andwere heading somewhere, its wise and rea-sonable to check the destination of the routeyoure on. If you know me, youll know Irecommend taking the road that leads to life,to God. Eternal life with God your Creator. Aquote from Jesus the Messiah, the Son of

God makes the life map clear: Dont betroubled. You trust God, now trust in me.There are many rooms in my Fathers home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. Ifthis were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come andget you, so that you will always be with mewhere I am. And you know where I amgoing and how to get there. No we dont,Lord, Thomas said. We havent any ideawhere you are going, so how can we knowthe way? Jesus told him, I am the way, thetruth, and the life. No one can come to theFather except through me. (John 14:1-6).

Well, QL13, Thunder Run, is full ofmeaning and memories. Whatever our expe-riences, whatever our adventures along thatroad, they stick with us to this day. Our lives

were changed for all time. We grew up. Welearned life. We learned what life meant invery many ways. I trust and pray that, what-ever our experiences along Thunder run, weare better for it. I trust and pray, in a similarway, that life and its meaning and fullnesshas its fullest meaning for each of us too.And that is in its fullest adventure which iswith God our Creator through Jesus his sonkeeping us in the center of the way, right oncourse until the very end. Allons!

God bless you. God loves you. So do I.Chaplain Larry Haworth1634 Holly Ave.Darien, IL [email protected](630)434-4362

Hi Girls: Spring hasfinally arrived, or at

least thats what the calendar says. Evenif you are still experiencing some of thatcold, wet stuff, I hope you will turn yourthoughts to August and our next gatheringbeing held in Washington D.C.

Having grown up in the D.C. area, Iknow there are a lot of exciting and his-torical sites to explore. And Im sure thatmany of you are looking forward to doingsome touring. I know that no matter howmany times I visit the Vietnam Memorial,it always makes me cry. And standing onthe steps of the Lincoln Memorial, I feela mixture of pride and sadness. Pride inknowing that President Lincoln gave somany their freedom but sadness knowingthat so many had to give their lives inorder to obtain that freedom. .

But there is also another thing thatmakes me proud. That is that I too servedmy country in the Army and that I marriedone of Americas finest military mem-bers, a Blackhorse Trooper. I guess Imfortunate that my husband returned to mewithout the nightmares and other fearsthat many of our men still have. For thoseof you who love your husband, brother, son, uncle or just a friend who cant seemto let go of their time in Vietnam, then Iinvite you, even beg you, to join us onSaturday morning as we women gettogether to discuss PTSD.

At this years get together on Saturdaymorning (9am) we will have a guestspeaker by the name of Judy Gaudino.Judy was the director of the drop-in serv-ice centers in Vietnam and also served atfive different military bases in Vietnam.Today Judy serves as a counselor to theVVA Chapter 233 in New Jersey. She hasa masters degree in social work and is alicensed clinical social worker. She hasbeen counseling veterans and their fami-lies for over 15 years. We are very fortu-nate to have her come and speak with usabout PTSD and how we can help thosewhom we love cope with it.

Also at this years reunion we willhave our own Bunker room on Fridaynight where we can just get together andtalk about whatever we feel like talkingabout. One of our girls, Mitsi Johnson, has offered to bring some of her MaryKay supplies and we can have a good timegiving each other a make over. Hmm, doyou think she can turn me into a moviestar? (ha-ha) Our bunker will open atabout 7pm and remain open as late as youall want to stay. So, come join us, laugh alittle, cry a little and make a whole bunchof new friends.

See you in Washington. Barb Morenois the 11th ACVVC womens coordinatorand is the wife of Retired SFC BobMoreno of G Troop.

Im not the author of this information as I came across it while Iwas bidding on a pair of our jungle boots on ebay. The followingis the description given about the boots from that bid. Oh, and

yes, I did successfully win that bid. Size 8R was probably pretty com-mon so this size is hard to find.

The armys tropical combat boot, or jungle boot, was one of themost successful clothing innovations of the Vietnam War. Its devel-opment was begun in 1955 as an attempt to overcome a major prob-lem in the footwear used in World War II and in Korea.

Because of the failure of the Goodyear welt stitching in thatfootwear, the sole often separated from the boot. This problem wasparticularly prevalent in jungle climates, commonly occurring after amonths exposure to constant dry-wet conditions. To overcome thisdefect, the Army Quartermaster and Engineering ResearchCommand adopted the vulcanized sole process, first developed inEurope.

The first three types of direct molded sole (DMS) tropical combatboots were tested in Panama during 1960-61. The boots were styledafter World War II, 1943-pattern combat boots with buckled cuff, except that a screened eyelet was added at the inside shank of eachboot and a Swiss Vibram-pattern mountain-climbing sole was used.

The three types varied only in their upper materials. An all-leather, an all-nylon, and a combination style were tried. The all-leather uppers proved uncomfortably hot and heavy, and the all-nylon uppers did not provide enough support of protection againstexternal objects. The combination style-nylon duck upper with aleather foot portion (vamp and counter-pocket) vulcanized directly toa rubber-cleated sole, was the most satisfactory and retained thissuperiority in all subsequent boot-designed tests.

My comment is that we still went through 2 or 3 pairs of them inour 1-year tours.

The origin of our Jungle BootsThe armys tropical combat boot, or jungle boot, was one ofthe most successful clothing innovations of the Vietnam War.

railroad station.Taxicab rates vary. Washington is sur-

rounded by several counties in Marylandand Virginia. Each jurisdiction has its ownrules. Some cabs charge by zones and otherscharge by miles. It is best to ask the driverfor the approximate fare before entering thecab so there will be no surprises at the end ofthe trip.

ParkingThe hotel has valet parking only. It is $24

per night. The best deal I found was atNational Airport long-term Economy park-ing, $7 per 24 hours. Take shuttle, taxi orMetro to hotel. A good deal if you are driv-ing in and just want to park the car for theduration. National airport is about 6 milesfrom the hotel. You may want to search theweb for Washington parking lots. www.sun-park.com is one. Try looking for one near ametro station. It will save you walking orcab fare. There is parking available at UnionStation.

ToursYou can arrange your own tours at the

hotel concierge desk. We may try to arrangetour to Fort Meade, if possible, on Friday. The Regiment deployed to Vietnam fromthere in 1966. Anyone interested in such atour should advise the reunion chairman. Ifthere is enough interest, we will see if thefolks at Fort Meade can accommodate us.There will be a fee to cover the cost of thetrip. (Those traveling by rail from BWI cansee part of Fort Meade on the right side ofthe train a few minutes after leaving BWIStation. The train passes by the railhead atFort Meade.)

There are a lot of places to see in andaround Washington. If you want to makeyour own plans you can get informationfrom the following: " 1-800-VISIT-DC www.visitdc.com " 1-800-VISIT-VA " 1-800-MD IS FUN www.mdisfun.org

Any questions about airport connections, parking, tours, etc. can best be answered bythe concierge desk at the hotel. Call them at:202- 737-1234. They say they can handleparking of vans and RVs. I suggest callingthe concierge desk ahead of time regardingyour requirements

See you in DC for the Reunion of ourCentury

11ACVVCwill representall Vietnamvets in DCby Eric Newton

The whole world may be watchingour events in the capitol this sum-

mer. Washington is high on the list ofnews making places and is the locationof countless major media offices. Highprofile politicians and other dignitariesmay attend our events.

With that much news focus we mustall make a special effort to present thebest possible image of the 11th USCavalry, Vietnam veterans, the militaryand our generation.

It is suggested you do not wear jun-gle fatigues or camo outside the hotel.Appropriate quartermaster itemsinclude hats and shirts. There is nothingthe media likes better than to zoom inon some unshaven, shabby, camofatigue, jungle booted homeless lookingvet to project a beaten down loser. Weare not losers. You went to secure free-dom for an oppressed people and toblock the spread of communism. Othercountries benefited and remained freebecause of your stand in Vietnam. Youmy friends kicked butt. The SouthVietnamese lost their war three yearsafter you left.

If you feel uncomfortable answeringa reporters question, please refer themto any official of the 11th ACVVC.Stumbles and blunders have a way offinding their way to Saturday NightLive.

Please be well dressed and neatlygroomed to present the positive look ofproud veterans. Remember, you are rep-resenting to the public the perception ofALL Vietnam Veterans. And they aswell as you deserve the respect youearned.

See you in DCEric Newton served with K Troop, 68-69. He is an 11 ACVVC director andthe Public Information Officer

Greetings to all. The quarter-master has been kept very

busy lately with a large number of orders.Keep up the good work. This issue containsa new quartermaster form. We have severalnew items that were tested at the last reunionand have met with approval. They are a totebag for the ladies, a barbeque apron and agear bag. Also we have a limited supply ofthe 100 year commemorative coins.

One of the things that will become appar-ent as you scan the order form is that someitems have undergone price increases. Wehave put off raising prices for as long as wecould. However, we are being hurt by con-tinued price increases on the items we selland even more so by the jump in costs tomail items through the post office. We wereover 400 dollars in the red on the cost ofshipping and handling as opposed to whatwe charge for same. For example, in my lastmailing there were three packages thatrequired postage of $10.44, $11.71 and$13.60 This comes to $35.75. We took in$15.00(3x 5.00). So on postage alone, welost $20.75 plus the cost of the packagingwhich was at least another $6.00 This exam-ple is just so you can understand that we arenot raising prices capriciously. We have to

average our shipping costs so that over theyear we reach a break-even point.

We are still doing our best to bring youitems at the lowest prices that we can andstill provide a slight profit margin to theorganization for our commitments like thescholarship fund.

The one thing that I can guarantee you isthat my cost to you for running the quarter-master store will not increase. It was $0 00for the last year just like every year beforethat! My labor is all donated free of charge toensure that there will continue to be aQuartermaster store for you to use. So to theseveral of you that have suggested we couldkeep prices down by my taking less profit, all I have to say is that if I cut $0 by 100% itis still $0.

I would like to remind you that old formswill not be accepted after 04-01-01. Pleasemake sure you use the updated form. Alsotake time to check your order and ensure thatthe addition is correct and that you are send-ing it to the correct location. I do QM formsnot membership, and if you send QM formsto membership they have no way to processthem. Avoid delays and lost forms by mail-ing them to the correct address.

From the Quartermaster...Rodney H. George
