State of play in

race for WAFL honoursThe night of the final round is the second most important time in the WAFL. While the last game of the year produces a premiership team, the end of the regular season determines a lot of fates. The closing fixtures decide who will be the Bernie Naylor medallist, the minor premier, the leading statistics winners, the best club across three grades – and how a band of retirees will mark the end of their careers. The Football Budget has rounded up the key honours that will be achieved at around 4.50pm this Saturday and set up their thrilling or not-so-exciting conclusion.

FINALS BERTHSTechnically there are four clubs fighting for the last two spots in the September round. But one of the combatants in the match at Bendigo Bank Stadium won’t be making it. Finding out which one makes the Peel-East Perth clash all the more enthralling. Each has a 7-10 record but the Royals hold on to fifth spot because of superior percentage.

Claremont sits fourth at 8-9. Even a loss won’t budge the Tigers from the finals because only a victorious East Perth can leapfrog Darren Harris’ unit because of a superior percentage. Perth and Peel just don’t have the goods in the for and against columns. To make the premiership series the Demons not only need to pull the biggest sporting miracle since Steven Bradbury’s famous Olympic skate to defeat Subiaco but need either Peel and East Perth to draw or the Thunder win by a very small margin. They would need Swan Districts to defeat Claremont but if a Fraser McInnes-inspired Royals were triumphant in Mandurah they could finish fourth and host the Elimination Final.

MINOR PREMIERSHIPOne WAFL observer remarked it must be one of the few seasons when the minor premier was essentially known after Round 1. After the initial set of fixtures Subiaco was on top with a percentage of 268 points. Going into the last round the Lions are still leading the league and their percentage is 218 points.

State of play in

race for WAFL honours Subiaco knew it had the minor premiership three rounds ago when it became impossible for South Fremantle to catch Jarrad Schofield’s men. The top three can’t change regardless of the outcomes this weekend. The Bulldogs will remain second because no-one can dislodge them. The berth is out of West Perth’s reach because it has a bye this round. Subiaco will get the week off in the opening weekend of finals to prepare to meet the winner of the South Fremantle-West Perth Qualifying Final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

BERNIE NAYLOR MEDALThe task is simple for South Fremantle’s Mason Shaw. All he has to do is kick 10 goals and he will be the WAFL’s leading goalkeeper for 2018. A double-digit haul will enable Shaw to finish the home-and-away rounds with 44 goals, one more than a couple of West Perth teammates who are set for club history. Falcons Tyler Keitel and Andrew Strijk lead the goalscorers list going into Round 21 with 43 each. However, neither will add to his tally because West Perth has a bye this week. So unless there is one of the most memorable scoring performances in modern WAFL history Keitel and Strijk will give the Falcons their first Bernie Naylor medallist for almost two generations. Phil Smith was the most recent West Perth player to top the goals list with 81 in 1973. The previous time players tied for the Bernie Naylor Medal was in 1992 when South Fremantle’s Craig Edwards and Kevin Caton from Swan Districts were level on 48 goals.

LEADING STATS WINNERSNo one on the list of most WAFL disposals is reeling in Shane Nelson in Round 21. Nelson completed his home-and-away season with West Perth last week and finished on 676 touches from 18 points. Just like the Bernie Naylor Medal another Falcon is in the top two for possessions with Aaron Black collecting 562. However, Black could be overtaken by Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley, who has 537 disposals going into his last round battle with Perth. The contest for most hit-outs has developed into an interesting affair in recent

weeks with Subiaco’s Zac Clarke (627) last week jumping ahead of South Fremantle’s Brock Higgins (625), who has played one fewer match.

CHAMPION CLUBWinning the league flag is the ultimate for every club but there is still a great sense of achievement from the successes of the minor grade teams. The Rodriguez Shield recognises the champion club each WAFL season. Ten points are awarded for a league win and four for colts and reserves triumphs. The system didn’t really matter because Subiaco’s position atop the league, reserves and colts premiership tables means the Lions won the trophy weeks ago.

RACE IS OVEROf course, for four clubs the final siren this weekend means the end of the season. And for several it will mean the end of careers. While there will be players and officials who will take a few more weeks to reassess their futures, there are several who have decided to put up their hands and bow out this round. East Fremantle midfielder Jamie McNamara and Beau Wilkes from Claremont have already departed while a veteran of WA football, Rob Wiley, will likely leave the competition for the last time when the Sharks fulfil their responsibilities against South Fremantle.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Perhaps it’s appropriate that this week’s featured collectable is related to money. After all, there are a few WAFL clubs that could do with some, at the moment. Back when these money boxes were made, though, most of the clubs were going along quite nicely. And every kid in WA would have been keen to have a money box with their club’s logo on it. But just quite why it was the Bank of New South Wales (later “the Wales” and, later still, merged into “Westpac”) that realised there was a market for these, I’m not sure. I first saw one of these about 10 years ago now, when collector George showed me his Perth money box. Since then, I’ve noticed that East Fremantle Football Club has the Old Easts version, while I’ve also been shown East Perth and West Perth versions. A Budget reader has now sent me this photograph of the Swan Districts, though the sticker was quite badly damaged. I’m yet to see a Claremont, Subiaco or South Fremantle money box. These money boxes were also made for the VFL clubs and now sell for anywhere between $80 and $150, depending on which club is featured. But the WAFL ones don’t turn up for sale, so it’s tough to put a price on them. One current WAFL club director, whose father worked for the Bank of NSW, was stunned to learn what the VFL versions sold for. He remembers having heaps of the WAFL versions at home and kicking them around the house, as a child.Transfers continue to be one of the most sought-after of all WAFL collectables. The forerunner to modern-day stickers, transfers were usually stuck on mirrors and car windows by kids in the 1960s. Most of the makers of the transfers that featured the WAFL clubs’ logos were actually the petrol companies. And it’s taken years to put together a decent list of all the transfers that were made all those years ago.

But even after all my years of researching these things, I had still only seen one from a set of eight transfers made by Shell Australia, most likely in the late 1950s. That was until recently when Mark, from Margaret River, found an old money tin with a wooden lid in his relative’s items. There, on the lid, was a Subiaco transfer from that Shell set. Needless to say, I’m still keen on seeing the other six.Given it’s the final round of the home-and-away season, and supporters of some clubs may not read another WAFL Collectables column this year, I thought it a good time to renew my request for help with my club annual report library. Over the course of this year, a number of holes in the collection were filled, thanks to some very helpful Football Budget readers.

But I’m still chasing annual reports for all clubs up to the end of WWII in 1945. And, after WWII, I’m after any of those in the list below. Drop me an email or give me a call if you know of anyone who might sell me one of these. Claremont: 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953-57, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1969. East Fremantle: 1947, 1950. East Perth: 1946-50, 1952, 1953, 1963. Perth: 1946-54, 1957, 1960, 1961. South Fremantle: 1946, 1949. Subiaco: 1946-53. Swans: 1946, 1947, 1949-57, 1960, 1962, 1964-67, 1969, 1970, 1975, 1979. Also, don’t forget that you can contact me at any time over summer by phone or email. I’m always happy to hear from Budget readers with queries about their collectables. Finally for this week is a photograph of a small piece of memorabilia, which was recently sent to me by a Budget reader. From around the turn of last century right through until the 1980s, most clubs issued their members with little books that contained tickets to home games. Those books sometimes turn up from the 1970s and 1980s, but rarely from earlier periods. So it was somewhat unusual that this East Perth ticket book from 1912 survived. It’s a beauty, and right up there with the oldest I have seen, including the 1910 book in East Perth Football Club’s reception area, the 1909 South Fremantle book in my own collection, the 1914, and 1915 East Fremantle

books that belong to private collectors and the 1913 East Fremantle book held by that club.

by Sean Cowan

During 2018, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Peel Thunder East PerthStory so far: Peel has gone LWLWL in its past five matches to sit seventh on the ladder. The eight-point defeat at the hands of Claremont last round has raised doubts about whether the Thunder are genuine finals material.Running hot: He must be the favourite for the Thunder fairest and best award and he could well finish the season as the best tackler in the competition. Ben Howlett averages 8.5 tackles a game in WAFL 2018. He will be valuable if Peel make the finals. What is to come: An Elimination Final battle or September off.

Story so far: The Royals are up and down like a yo-yo. They have been in and out of the top five all season. Two rounds ago there was a 114-point win over East Fremantle but it was followed by an 18-point loss to West Perth.Running hot: Jackson Nelson has been overlooked for AFL duty but that has been a bonus for East Perth. Nelson has not only dominated opponents, but he has also been a strong rebounder of the ball off the Royals’ half-back line. What is to come: Mothballs or a place in the finals.

Last time they met: R18, 2018 – Peel 14.8 (92) d East Perth 10.7 (67).It only seems like yesterday these teams met. It almost was. Through a quirk in fixturing Peel defeated East Perth on August 4 in Mandurah in an ominous sign for those striving for a spot in the top five. The key: East Perth is going to have to forget about its drive to Peel three weeks ago because a similar result will end the Royals’ season. Keeping Oscar Allen from the West Coast clutches could be the difference.

Saturday, August 25, 2.15pm

Swan Districts Claremont

Story so far: A season that promised so much early has finished in a disappointing fashion for Swans. The black and whites have lost eight of their past nine matches to languish in eighth spot on the ladder. They will finish 2018 in that position.Running hot: He has been part of a defence that has been under considerable pressure in recent weeks but Alex Howard has regularly proven to be a block for opponents. He is well respected by the Swan Districts match committee. What is to come: A strong review on what went wrong in second half of season.

Story so far: Three wins in four matches and suddenly Claremont is in the 2018 finals. The Tigers sit fourth with an 8-9 record and have a strong grip on the right to host the Elimination Final in the first week of the September action. Running hot: Tom Ledger spent some time in the reserves midway through the season, however, he has shown in recent rounds that his skills and experience will be extremely valuable to Claremont in the finals series.Who is to come: An Elimination Final, either as host or visitor.

Last time they met: R10, 2018 – Claremont 13.12 (90) d Swan Districts 10.10 (70).The Tigers kept Swans to just 291 possessions for the match. Jared Hardisty and Jye Bolton were outstanding for Claremont, who kept Swan Districts goalless in the final quarter. Matt Rogers was the best for the black and whites. The key: Swan Districts can’t make the finals but it can have a say in who does. The black and whites are better than their second half of the season indicates and if they can gel one more time the Tigers have a fight on their hands.

PEEL THUNDER V EAST PERTH SWAN DISTRICTS v CLAREMONT

Saturday, August 25, 2.15pm

East Fremantle South FremantleStory so far: The 2018 yearbook won’t sit well on the shelves of the East Fremantle clubrooms. The season can’t end quick enough for a Sharks team that has lost the past nine matches. East Fremantle has won five of 37 games since Round 1, 2017.Running hot: Amid the gloom at Moss St, former Peel and South Fremantle colts player Cameron Loersch, who also spent time on Gold Coast’s list, has been a shining light in attack. Loersch has kicked 27 goals from nine matches. What is to come: A wooden spoon is on its way for a new coach.

Story so far: Three consecutive wins have South Fremantle’s engine shifting into top gear in the lead-up to the premiership round. South Fremantle is guaranteed second spot so doesn’t need to take risks in the final round of the regular campaign.Running hot: South Fremantle has had a few options in attack this season and Mason Shaw showed he was just as valuable as any with a seven-goal haul in the Bulldogs’ 78-point win over Perth last weekend. What is to come: A home Qualifying Final against West Perth.

Last time they met: R9, 2018 – South Fremantle 18.13 (121) d East Fremantle 7.6 (48).Kyle Russell, Jacob Dragovich and Mason Shaw combined to enable South Fremantle to put East Fremantle out of the contest by half-time. Jon Marsh was outstanding for the Sharks with 25 disposals and 10 marks. The key: In one corner is a team that can’t hit Mad Monday fast enough and in the other is a band of players who just don’t want to do anything that will prevent their appearance in the finals. Expect the Bulldogs to be in September mode.

Saturday, August 25, 2.15pm

Subiaco Perth

Story so far: The show just goes on – and on. A hapless East Fremantle became Subiaco’s 17th scalp of the season. The last home-and-away loss for the Lions was in March last year. The club’s colts and reserves teams also sit atop their ladders.Running hot: Now in his fifth league season, Hayden Kennedy has cemented his place in the Subiaco line-up. Kennedy had 34 possessions in the Lions’ big win over the Sharks. He had 26 in the previous round victory over West Perth. What is to come: A week off before the Second Semi-Final.

Story so far: Much of the excitement around Lathlain Park at the midway mark of the season has evaporated. Perth has lost its past three matches and now faces the toughest hurdle of all in the WAFL this season to get back in the top five.Running hot: Brant Colledge might have secured a personal achievement in 2018 after climbing into the top 10 possession-winners in the competition with 31 touches in the loss to South Fremantle in the previous round. What is to come: Either a miracle advance to the finals or another missed chance.

Last time they met: R8, 2018 – Perth 9.8 (62) lost to Subiaco 15.12 (102).Rhys Waters, Chris Phelan, Ben Sokol, Brad Stevenson and Clancy Wheeler each kicked two goals as the Lions maintained their WAFL advance. Mitch Lague and Corey Byrne worked hard to try to get Perth back into the contest. The key: Stranger things have happened. Not too many but where there is hope there is a chance of a WAFL miracle. Maybe the Demons need a copy of Round 16, 2016 when they defeated the Lions, who only dropped four games in that home-and-away season.

THE MERGERIn the tradition of The Castle and Ali’s Wedding, one of Australia’s most popular comedians - Damian Callinan - adapts his entertaining and topical stage play, The Merger, for the big screen!

Bodgy Creek is a struggling town. The drought won’t let up, jobs are scarce after the mill was shut down, and the footy team looks like it will have to merge with another club or fold. Living a hermit-like existence on the town’s fringe, former football star turned ‘Town Killer’ Troy Carrington (Callinan), is coaxed into rescuing the team after striking up an unlikely friendship with Neil (Rafferty Grierson) who is struggling with the recent loss of his father.

Teaming up with Neil’s mum Angie (Kate Mulvany) who runs a nearby refugee support centre, they unite to recruit the new arrivals to save the team and take the community on a journey of change. But for some, like Neil’s grandfather and Club President, Bull (fan-favourite, John Howard) and ‘star’ player Carpet Burn (Angus McLaren), it’s more change than they’re willing to take.

The Merger, a film with a big heart and plenty of laughs, is an offbeat and uproarious comedy about footy, life in the country and the power of communities to overcome small-mindedness. It opens in cinemas on September 6.

WIN WIN WIN WINThanks to Umbrella Entertainment we are giving away double passes to an advance screening of The Merger on Thursday, August 30 at 6.45pm at Event Cinemas Innaloo. To win, head to the Football Budget Facebook page, LIKE our page and tell us your favourite WAFL moment so far in season 2018! Competition closes 5pm on Monday, August 27.

footy shortsFalcons clear the air over nameWest Perth officials have been keen to distance the club from a move to register the name Joondalup Falcons. The West Australian Football Commission has confirmed it had made an application to IP Australia to secure trademarks relating to the name Joondalup Falcons. It followed West Perth’s move into voluntary administration with debts around $790,000. The decision to register the name was part of an administrative process and the WAFC has no formal position about a name change for the West Perth Football Club. The Falcons will know more next week about whether the club will continue to operate in its current guise. Meanwhile, a special fundraising lunch will be held at Joondalup Arena on August 30. The event will feature several West Perth-produced AFL players, including West Coast premiership player Mark Seaby and Fremantle’s Stephen Hill.

» Shane Nelson (WP)» Blayne Wilson (SF)

Wilson spreads footy wingsIt is spread over five different teams, but the 150-match honour is a sign of longevity no matter how it is achieved. South Fremantle defender Blayne Wilson reached the mark in the last round battle with Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. The tally includes 36 matches with Peel, another 29 representing East Perth, one for WA and nine AFL appearances with West Coast. Against the Demons he played his 76th match for the Bulldogs. Wilson began his league career with the Thunder in 2009 before being drafted by the Eagles and subsequently placed with the Royals under the player alignment.

Best of the best over the season There were flashes of brilliance or the continuation of consistency, but 20 players have been in the spotlight this season as M and J Chickens Player of the Round winners. While Subiaco ruckman Zac Clarke was the latest to earn the honour, there was plenty of competition for the prize during the penultimate round with West Perth’s Shane Nelson also outstanding in his team’s win over East Perth. But Nelson had already been awarded the Player of the Round title after his performance in Round 4.

It’s been a few years between WAWFL premiership drinks for both East Fremantle and Subiaco. Come Sunday afternoon, that equation will change. With the Sharks searching for their first flag since 2011, their journey this season has been telling. From Round 1, the club wasted no time taking the wheel and steering it to the top of the ladder – and not once have they looked back as they seek the WAWFL title at Claremont Oval. Accomplishing a minor premiership, 15 wins and an average winning margin of 56 points, the Sharks raised the bar as the very best in the competition in 2018. Amassing eight wins and finishing fourth on the ladder, Subiaco has emerged as the surprise package of the finals series. With two consecutive wins over third-placed Swan Districts and Peel Thunderbirds (second), Subiaco has certainly hit peak form at the right time. Winning its last flag in 2015 as the Coastal Titans, the club will be looking to secure its first premiership in maroon and yellow colours. This Sunday Subiaco will be looking to move past East Fremantle – a team that has already beaten the Lions three times this year. East Fremantle vice-captain Ashlee Atkins said the club was treating the upcoming Grand Final just like any other game. “Our preparation and mindset won’t change in that sense,” Atkins said. “Subiaco are a great side that have really come into some form the last couple of weeks, so we definitely think we’ll have a tough game on our hands.” Fresh off her 2018 Dhara Kerr best-and-fairest award win at the WAWFL Awards Night on Monday night, Hayley Miller’s prolific form has been telling in 2018.

Mudella WAWFL Grand final 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

East FremantleSubiaco

By Sandra Argese

Displaying effective run and carry, racking up the clearances in droves and exhibiting gritty tackling pressure across this season, the AFL Women’s Fremantle Dockers and Subiaco captain’s ability to win the ball and use her effective skills with both hand and feet is certainly going to make a difference on Grand Final day. Other influential AFLW players to take the field for East Fremantle include former Mundella WAWFL leading goal kicker Ashlee Atkins, Melissa Caulfield, midfielder-forward Gabby O’Sullivan and midfielder Evangeline Gooch. Former Fremantle Docker Amy Lavell (Subiaco) is coming off a four-goal performance in the Preliminary Final against Peel Thunderbirds, and will be looking to continue her superb form in front of the big sticks. Subiaco coach Simon Quayle said he had relished the opportunity to promote skill and understanding within the squad throughout the season and looked to take that into Sunday’s big decider. “There were heaps of new players with limited exposure to football. My approach and message were to teach the game, coach the person,” he said. “East Fremantle are an outstanding group, coached well and have a full list of good players. We’ll be preparing as normal; focus on skills, focus on team, focus on what we do well,” he said. “Finals are all about winning. Coming from fourth, every week was an elimination. The club has only one goal, and that’s to win.” The 2018 Mundella WAWFL League Grand Final will be played at Claremont Oval on Sunday August 26 with bouncedown at 2.30pm. Reserves start at 12pm and Rogers Cup at 10am. All games will be live streamed on the Mundella WAWFL Facebook page.

We understand that choosing how you live your future is one of the biggest decisions you will make. That’s why we’ve asked residents like Alwyn to share their own personal story on how they came to start life at St Ives Centro.

It’s about connecting with like-minded people who may have similar personal experiences; a way for you to find out how St Ives Centro can help you feel more connected, more active, safer, and happier with how you live your life.

But don’t just take our word for it…

You can read more stories on our website, or book a tour and meet our residents for yourself.

We look forward to being a part of your story.

The day we arrived, our neighbours popped in to say hi. We instantly felt welcomed!
