Greeting friends & fellow riders! It’s great to have you all back with us again this month for this special “Rolling Thunder” edition of Thunder Roads Virginia. I’d like to share a portion of my letter this month with information about a cause that I’ve known about for years but only recently has it brought new meaning to me through my son Curtis who is on active duty with the U.S. Navy….Rolling Thunder:

“Rolling Thunder began in 1987 as a demonstration to bring awareness to the plight of prisoners of war (POW) and to those missing in action (MIA). Rolling Thunder originated when four Vietnam Veterans, exercising the First Amendment “Right to Petition and Assemble”, organized the first group of 2500 motorcycles to ride through the streets of Washington, DC. This first Rolling Thunder run was made in an attempt to petition the government to take responsibility for the soldiers that were abandoned after the Vietnam War ended.

Today over 250, 000 motorcycles ride during the Rolling Thunder Memorial Day weekend observance, held each year in our nation’s capital. Rolling Thunder has evolved to be not only a demonstration for the POW/MIA issue but also a demonstration of patriotism and respect for soldiers and veterans from all wars.” This information & more can be found on their official site www.rollingthundermotorcyclerally.com . stopping to pick up special coupons at local businesses (you don’t even have to get off your bike). Collect all your coupons, cross the finish line within 90-minutes of your start time, and you qualify for a special drawing with prices, free t-shirts, and more. From 10:30 to Noon there will be an All-You-Can-Eat - Ice Cream Social, sponsored by Turkey Hill Ice Cream and WYYD, who will also be providing a live concert, all the ice cream you want or can eat and a fun day for the entire family! Registration is open from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m on Sat. June 26 at Riverfront Park, downtown Lynchburg, VA, but spots are limited, so register online at www.riverfrontchallenge.com. The foundation was formed by the parents of Marine Sgt. Eric McColley, killed on February 17, 2006. The National Wreath Project began on Christmas Day 2006, when the McColley family placed 515 wreaths in Quantico National Cemetery where their son is interred. In 2009 the project placed 3300 wreaths in Quantico National Cemetery and Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. This year will mark the 5th wreath placement and the foundations goal is to increase the number of wreaths placed to 5000 in three National Cemeteries. Proud To Be An AmericanDoc’s Easter Basket Story March 31, 2010 On Easter my husband and I take an Easter basket to the Wall in Washington, DC. My husband, Mike “Doc” Spresser was a combat medic and forward observer stationed at Camp Carroll, a 1/4 mile off the DMZ. One of the very few fond memories he has of his time there was Easter morning. The day before Easter he went around the base and collected small amounts of money from all the men. He got up early Easter morning and got a case of grenades and wrote money amounts on each of the grenades. He then went through the base and hid them. When he was done, he woke all the guys and told them it was time for an Easter egg hunt. He explained what he had done and that whoever found the most eggs would get the most money. He also told them that he pulled a pin on one of the grenades, so watch out (my hus-band’s sense of humor!). He received such joy watching the guys running around the base using their helmets as baskets that for a short time there was no war, no enemy, and no terror. He’ll never forget that moment he brought them. A lot of those men did not come home. So we go to them, to the Wall, to remind them of that silly time. We always put Easter eggs in it and also things in it that Mike would get sent to him at the front line. Simple things that meant a lot at the time, deck of cards, sardines, comb, pack of cigs., can of coke, ivory soap (it didn’t leave a scent, so the v.c. didn’t smell him) etc. And so it goes on; as Easter comes we honor and remember his friends, his comrades, his brothers. God speed til he meets all of you again. I know all of you help him get through each and everyday and I thank you from the bottom of my heart because I know that you know he gave you his all even though he doesn’t know it. Doc is an original member of Rolling Thunder® Inc.

Over the next couple of months, I’ll be sharing with you some information about a truly unique organization called JPAC. Up until a few months ago, I never even knew that they existed until I received a call from my son, PR2 Curtis Matthews who is on active duty in the U.S. Navy, that he was doing something special for the military. This is the 1st part of the JPAC story & I hope that you’ll join us for upcoming issues as you learn more & more about this special group who, in my book, has put a new meaning to the phrase: POWs * MIAs…You Are Not Forgotten. ~ Kelly ~

The mission of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all Americans missing as a result of the nation’s past conflicts. The highest priority of the organization is the return of any liv-ing Americans that remain prisoners of war. To date, the U.S. Government has not found any evidence that there are still American POWs in captivity from past U.S. conflicts. JPAC is located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The command was activated on Oct. 1, 2003, created from the merger of the 30-year-old U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii, and the 11-year-old Joint Task Force - Full Account-ing. Commanded by a flag officer, JPAC is manned by approximately 400 handpicked Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Department of the Navy civilians. The laboratory portion of JPAC, referred to as the Central Identification Laboratory (CIL), is the largest forensic anthropology laboratory in the world. JPAC also maintains three permanent overseas detachments to assist with command and control, logistics and in-country support during investigation and recovery operations. They are Detachment One located in Bangkok, Thailand, Detach-ment Two in Hanoi, Vietnam and Detachment Three in Vientiane, Laos. JPAC has a fourth detachment, Detachment Four, located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, responsible for recovery team personnel when they are not deployed.

Bikers for Tykes & TroopsIn Virginia Beach, fun and charity went hand in

hand at GEICO’s fifth annual Bikers for Tykes & Troops Motorcycle Rally and Concerts. The event drew more than 1,000 people and raised more than $50,000 to donate to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) and the United Service Organization of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia (USOHR).

The success in this event and the amount raised would not have been possible without our main sponsors: Eagle 97.3, Ocean Breeze Waterpark, Diesel Rock n’ Country Bar, and Yamaha. Additional support was received by KOA Kampground, Thun-der Roads Magazine, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Holiday Trav-L Park, Fastlane Biker Gear & Accessories, D & D Import Cycles, Pre-cision Motorcycle, and George & Son Plumbing.

The event had something for everyone who at-tended. Wing-eating contests, wrestling demonstra-tions and cornhole challenges were among the many events that kept participants busy. Live perfor-mances from our local bands Suburban Key Party, The Mike Proffitt Band, Dave Cynar, Tailgate Down, Bullwinkle 757, and Rock Star Parking plus national country artist Lee Brice had the event rockin’ the entire weekend.


More than 350 bikers participated in the USOHR’s annual Freedom Ride, earning the chance to win a 2008 Harley Davidson XL883. There was a Tattoo Contest organized by Virginia Beach Ink, a Bikini Contest by the International Bikini Team and best bike contests with one special participant. One young boy entered his bicycle into the contest and after hours of polishing his bike and working the crowd he was pleased to win the 2010 Best Bicycle Award, the highlight of many people’s weekend.

“2010 has been a challenging year for non-profits to fundraise and maintain corporate sponsorships,” said GEICO Pub-lic Affairs Coordinator Toiya Sosa. “That makes our event vital to the fundraising efforts for the USOHR and CHKD. This is our way of giving back.”

“It gives us a tremendous sense of pride knowing that we are making a difference right here in our community,” said Powersports Product Analyst Heather McDonald, Bikers for Tykes & Troops coordinator. “All the hard work is worth it when the event comes together and we’re able to see what’s been accomplished.”

A guy is walking down the street and sees Little Johnny smoking a cigarette. He says, “Kid, you’re too young to smoke.” Johnny looks up but doesn’t say anything. When did you start smoking?” Johnny replies, “Right after the first time I had sex.” “Right after the first time you had sex!? the man exclaims. Malcolm O’Reilly hoisted his beer and said, ‘Here’s to spending the rest of me life!, between the legs of me wife!’ That won him the top prize at the pub for the best toast of the night! The next day, Mary ran into one of Malcolm’s drinking buddies on the street corner. The man chuckled leeringly and said, ‘ Mal won the prize the other night at the pub with a toast about you, Mary.’ She said, ‘Aye, he told me, and I was a bit surprised myself. You know, he’s only been there twice in the last four years. Once he fell asleep, and the other time I had to pull him by the ears to make him come.’

A truck driver had to deliver 100 penguins to the state zoo. As he was driving his truck through the desert, the truck broke down. After waiting by the side of the road for about three hours, he waved another truck down and offered a good ole’ boy named Bubba $500 to take the penguins to the State Zoo for him.The next day, the first truck driver ar-rived in town and saw Bubba crossing the road with the 100 penguins walking in pairs of two, directly behind him.The first truck driver jumped out of his truck and said, “What’s going on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the damn Zoo!” Bubba boastfully replied, “I did take them to the Zoo, but I had alot of money left over, so now we’re going to see a Disney movie.”

Ever wonder what a man’s ultimate embarrassment might be? I’d have to say it would be running into a brick wall with a good stiff erection......and breaking his nose. And turn about is fair play...A woman’s would have to be standing on the scales and literally having to reach down and separate her sagging boobs, just so she can read the numbers.

He proceeded to talk up a storm, jitters free.Upon his return to his office after the mass, he found the following note on the door: 1) Sip the vodka, don’t gulp it down, while sweating profusely. 2) There are 10 commandments, not 12. 3) There are 12 disciples, not 10. 4) Jesus was consecrated, not “constipated”. 5) Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not “bet his ass”. 6) We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the “Late, Great J.C”. 7) The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as “Daddy, Junior and the Spook”. 8) David slew Goliath; he did not “kick the shit out of him”. 9) When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey, don’t say he was “stoned off his ass”. 10) We do not refer to the cross as the ‘Big T.’ 11) When Jesus broke the bread at the last supper he said, ‘Take this and eat it for it is my body.’ He did not say ‘Eat me’. 12) The Virgin Mary is not called ‘Mary with the Cherry’. 13) The recommended grace before a meal is not: “Rub-A-Dub-Dub thanks for the grub, Yay God! Dig In”. 14) Next Sunday there will be a taffy pulling contest at St. Peter’s, not a “Peter Pulling Contest at St. Taffy’s”.

A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine that stated Dr. Bumbutu in Africa could enlarge your breast with-out surgery. So she decided to go to Dr. Bumbutu to see if he could help her. Are you feeling sexy these days?This is a good question that women often overlook espe-cially if they are raising a family, focusing on their careers or in menopause. Women live with a great deal of questions, frustrations, and judgments about their bodies. They often compare themselves to super-models and other women, but even Hollywood starlets and super-models complain about how imperfect their bodies are.Maybe you have gained a few pounds or can’t fit into your “skinny” jeans, or maybe you don’t seem to have the time anymore to put yourself together. You want to feel attractive again, sexy and juicy to your partner and to yourself. You want to turn a few heads again and feel like you are a “foxy” lady, right? So how can you reverse this downward spiral? Feeling sexy isn’t always about how you look. It really starts first with how you feel about yourself. You may not have the same body you did when you were a 20-year old but today you have a stronger sense of who you are as a woman. The years have taught you and shaped who you are in many re-spects and now you are a woman of depth and character. You are someone who has developed much of your potential but maybe not all and is still open to growing and learning more about yourself and your world. When you begin to appreciate who you have become your self confidence becomes stron-ger. There is nothing more attractive and a turn on to men then self-confidence.As women we go through many physical and emotional changes as we mature. Our bodies take on different shapes and hormones often dictate how we feel. In a world where be-ing youthful is everything learning to love who you are now, to feel sexy from the inside out can be a challenge. But it doesn’t have to be if you decide to begin to just love yourself where you are right now. Love every facet of your beautiful body ex-actly the way it is, and then from there you will decide on what exercise to do, or dress to buy, or haircut to get, because it will make you feel even more beautiful and sexy.These outer trappings are wonderful if we are doing them because we just want to enhance how we already feel about ourselves. Some of the most powerful seductresses in the world who attracted the most powerful men in the world, were not pretty, or thin or even young. Most of these women who were brilliant conversationalists, artists, mathemati-

cians, or scientists were fully comfortable with who they were. They were self-confident, courageous and outrageous. They broke all the stereotypes of femininity of their day and created their own definition. So we too have the same op-portunity by contacting that part of ourselves that lives true to her own definition of what sexy is, what attractiveness is and what being a goddess/woman is.

Tips for a healthier, sexier YOU:Recalibrate your “skinny size” Skinny is relative. To some a size 2 is skinny and to others a size 12 is skinny. If you used to weigh 300 pounds or more, size 12 is skinny. You define what makes you feel beautiful, not Vogue magazine. Find role models that are realistic and healthy. Remember, the magazines and Hollywood have distorted lenses based on fantasy.Cut back on the fake foods Stuff like high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats, and artificial sweeteners may be tasty but do nothing to help you eliminate that muffin top. Look at the labels in the foods you buy. If the ingredient sounds like something from a chemistry experi-ment, don’t put it in your body. Eat more organically.Move The Internet, Video Games Drive-thrus, and TV is making us lazier and more inactive. Peel your eyes off the screen, and get off your tushie; move, breathe, and do something that will make you sweat. And, do something that you will enjoy. If you hate the gym, don’t go. Movement doesn’t have to involve a gym, it could be something as simple as playing with kids, walking to the corner store instead of driving, or making love more. Yes, sex burns calories! The point is, move your body.Hang out with people that make you feel good Spend more time with people who are uplifting, fun, and like you for you. When you spend time with people who are negative or only like you because you “do” something for them, your stress levels increase, and your own insecuri-ties increase, thus leading you to overeat, and feel not good enough. Life is short and your time is valuable, so spend it with people who inspire you.Your life: Press PLAY not PAUSE Many of us will put our life on hold until we get back into our skinny jeans. We tell ourselves that once we are thin, we can enjoy our dreams, and not until then. Put your life back into PLAY, and do the things you dream about today. Stop using your “lack of beauty” as an excuse for not living your life. When you start accomplishing things, you will feel more confident. When you feel more confident, you will take better care of yourself out of desire instead of desperation. You should be proud of yourself & your ac-complishments. We all have made mistakes in the past so it’s ok to look in your rear view mirrors to see where you’ve been & what’s behind you. But, the most important thing is to stay focused on the road in front of you. Look ahead to the wonderful things that life has waiting for you to experience. Whether you’re at work or play, with family or friends or even all by yourself, don’t let life pass you by….Get out there & live everyday as if there’s no tomorrow…Enjoy every minute of everyday. Ladies - Be well, ride as often as you can & stay safe on your roads!

In January the History channel debuted a new series called “American Pickers”. The 10 episode first season is about two guys from Le Claire, Iowa that look for what they call “trea-sure”. An opportunity came up to chat with these two, and it turned out to be quite an experience. Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz from Antique Archeology are two of the most down to earth and real people that you could ever meet. These guys know exactly who they are, and where they are going. Very personable and interesting to talk with and listen to. Both guys even ride motorcycles! Mike likes to run around on an old In-dian Chief, an old Harley Knucklehead, or even the Harley VL. Frank has about 25 bikes in his personal collection. Frank bought his first motorcycle when he was in ninth grade, a 1959 Harley Sportster that he still has to this day. Both guys even get a kick out of running around town on scooters, anything on two wheels. Frank is also a big supporter of ABATE of Iowa, and has attended nearly all of the Freedom Rallies. If you are ever in Le Claire, stop by and meet them, you won’t be disap-pointed.

Their business is not a traditional antique dealership, and they are not antique dealers per se, but more treasure hunters. They are referred to as “pickers”. They are the people behind the scenes that find interesting items in old barns, garages, and wherever they are hiding. Their business is based on finding lost treasures, and bringing them back to life with the stories and history of unique items. Many antiques have been found, valued, and sought after, but Mike and Frank are look-ing for the interesting items that most people would walk past. Things that are too cool to go into the landfill and that some-one can love and appreciate once again. Recycling items

back into circulation that have been forgotten is their main goal. In the process of finding these lost treasures, they have fun talking, learning, and seeing beautiful America. During the interview, there was much discussion about the background of multiple items, so it is as much about the history of the item and the find, as the item itself. This history is then passed on to the buyers to in essence keep history alive. Items can be bought from their shop or website, and even some famous bike builders like Billy Lane and Jesse James have made purchases from the duo.

These guys run a business to make a buck or two, but their opinions on what they pick, and what they do with it is refreshing in this day and age. When discussing with them the value of items that they pick and purchase, there are some various opinions of how to value their finds. On one episode they picked a beautiful old jukebox and paid $1,300 for it. When they got it back to the shop, the item was looked at by a person with more knowledge in this arena, and the jukebox was valued at up to $5,000. The guys thought this was a great find, but in reality, they had no immediate offers anywhere near that amount, and ended up selling the item for $1,900. The both advised to be wary of any appraisal of antiques and memorabilia. The items are only worth what a buyer is willing to pay, and the amount a seller is willing to accept. Some may have held out for more money on the jukebox, but Mike and Frank thought that $1,900 was a fair price. This amount covered expenses, and made a few dollars for them, and the new owner was happy with the buy and would appreciate the “recycled” jukebox.

One of the first questions that comes to mind is how do they find this stuff? The answer to that question is from sub-mitted leads, and then simply from freestyle picking, as they


call it. People can call or email them to offer leads, or in their travels if they see a place where treasures may be found, they may stop to ask permission to do some picking. Freestyle picking is simply looking for places that may hide treasures, and stopping by to meet people, and ask for permission to take a look. They gain great joy from the “thrill of the chase” in trying to find items that are unique, as well as meeting the people. The area that they cover can only be limited by the imagination. They have been in most states picking, and even a little bit in Canada. They will soon start filming season two which includes 26 more episodes, and they will be all over the Midwest and many other places.

What happens to items after picking was another topic of discussion that led to some debate. Many of the items that are picked are coming right out of barns, sheds, garages, and who knows where. Sometimes the items are not the cleanest thing in the world, and the pair had some debate about what to do with the items. The interaction of these two is amus-ing on so many levels, and they just seem to fit and complement each other. Mike takes the minimalistic approach, and knocks off the droppings, dusts off the item, and does a basic clean up. Frank on the other hand will spend hours cleaning up an item, or if it is a mechanical item, will make sure that it works. He said that he likes the extra challenge of finding, fixing, and then passing on to a happy customer a working artifact of history. He may spend one half of a day cleaning or working on an item just to get an extra $10. For the most part though, cleaning is the only thing that is done to found items. Not much for refurbishing is ever performed, so that the new owner can do what they choose with it. The customer can de-cide to redo it, or leave it in original condition. Value wise on items it depends on what it is as to how refurbishing or leaving original will affect the value.

Looking around the shop, you can see these guys are also into motorcycles and riding. Mike started out picking by look-ing for and finding old motorcycles that were on the wanted list. His searching has since expanded to include many other items, but motorcycles will always be a love for Mike. One of the best motorcycle finds he has picked was a 1939 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. Mike’s dream find for a bike would be a Blackhawk or a Torpedo, because of the local Midwest connection with those bikes, and that they are not anywhere to be found. Other motorcycle items that Mike likes to find and sometimes keep for himself is anything Harley Knucklehead related, old motorcycle racing items, and anything from the pre 1920 motorcycle era.

Frank would like to find a 1936 Knucklehead as his dream find. He is also a big fan of the 1970s and anything old chop-per related like sissy bars, king/queen seats, Z-bars, and anything that made a 70s chopper what it was. Frank also likes unique old motorcycle trophies and personally has quite a collection of them as well as motorcycle toys. Frank also shows his commitment to motorcycling with his dedication to ABATE of Iowa. He has attended almost every Freedom Rally ever held, and is a large supporter of motorcyclist rights and rider education. From scooters to Honda choppers, to his first Sportster, to his full dresser, Frank is about riding and the motorcycle lifestyle.

News BytesMOTORCYCLE THEFTS FALLMotorcycle thefts in the US fell by 13% to 56,093 last year from 64,492 in 2008, the biggest drop since 2007 accord-ing to the National Insurance Crime Bureau in an April 13th statement. Honda was the most stolen brand accounting for 24% of the thefts, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson, said the NICB citing National Crime Information Center data.The recession prompted lower bike sales and a decrease in production, pushing motorcycle thefts down for a third consecutive year. Sales of new bikes fell 43% in 2009 from the year-earlier period, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Likewise, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association reported a 47.4% decrease in motorcycle production last year.Recovery rates have declined along with thefts, with only 30% of the stolen bikes recovered in 2009, compared with 41% in 2006, NICB data show.The top five states for motorcycle theft were warm-weather ones: California, Texas, Florida, North Caro-lina and Georgia, together accounting for 39% of the total.It should be no surprise that the summer months of July (6,319); August (6,079); and June (5,672) saw the most theft activity while the fewest thefts were recorded dur-ing the winter months of December (2,927); February (3,100); and January (3,570).The best way to prevent theft is to keep your motorcycle out of sight or covered up and secured to an immovable object with a good through-the-frame lock in addition to the steering lock.

MAINE REQUIRES MOTORCYCLES TO DISPLAY IN-SPECTION STICKERS Maine Governor John Baldacci on April 9, 2010 signed LD 1675 into law, requiring the state’s 50,000 registered motorcycles to carry inspection stick-ers that are “completely and clearly visible from the rear” starting in 2012. A bill that started in the state legislature as a broadly worded bill to quiet noisy motorcycles evolved into a measure requiring riders to display inspection stick-ers when Maine’s Transportation Committee concluded that 38% of Maine motorcycles aren’t inspected, noting faulty and noisy motorcycle mufflers would fail annual inspections.The bill also sets up a task force to explore other methods of reducing motorcycle noise, including sound testing, and report to the Transportation Committee by January 15, 2011. LD1675 passed the Maine House by a vote of 104-33 on March 22. The Senate passed it April 5, with no tally released.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY BILL PASSES IN OKLAHOMA“Gunner’s Bill” has been signed into law by Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry, providing for the state’s first comprehensive motorcycle safety program. HB 2264, authored by state Rep. Mike Christian and state Sen. Steve Russell, allows the state to add a $3 fee, designated for motorcycle safety and education, to the existing cost of registering a motor-cycle. It also establishes a revolving fund into which the

money is to be deposited. Rep. Christian said the legisla-tive action was necessary because motorcycle registrations continue to increase in Oklahoma; therefore, without train-ing and prevention efforts, vehicle crashes involving motor-cycles are likely to increase. According to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, there were 115,381 registered motorcyclists in the state in 2008, a 14.3% increase over 2007. Motorcycle fatalities increased 17.6% during the same period, and inju-ries increased 21.4%. HB 2264 is known as “Gunner’s Bill” in honor of Robert “Gunner” Catcher, a motorcyclist who died after being struck by a pickup in 2009. The driver of the truck said he did not see Gunner. “I heartily salute each and every one of ABATE of Oklahoma’s and the OK Confed-eration of Clubs volunteer officers and members, and look forward to our continued success working together in the spirit of unity to make Oklahoma the best state in which to ride,” said Tiger Mike Revere of ABATE of OK and a mem-ber of the Board of Directors of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). Also signed into law was SB 1670 - a bill that changes the makeup of the Oklahoma Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee. “So, not only will we generate about $400,000 each year but we will also have a substan-tial say in how it is spent,” commented John Pierce, ABATE Legislative Coordinator.

WYOMING BIKERS WORK WITH CITY TO PROMOTE MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS The Casper City Council voted unanimously to pay for motorcycle-safety billboards in the coming months, with Wyoming Central ABATE picking up the campaign halfway through the riding season. The council approved $5,400 in grant money to pay for four billboards from April through July, when Wyoming Central ABATE would begin paying for the billboards with its own message to run through October. The push for motor-cycle awareness stems from two high-profile accidents involving motorcyclists last summer, including an ABATE member who was killed by a left-turning Hummer. The ac-cidents prompted Wyoming Central ABATE to meet with city officials and hash out a plan to increase awareness of motorcycles among drivers. The Casper Police Department applied for grant money from the Wyoming Department of Transportation to be used on a “campaign targeting the reduction of the number and severity of motorcycle crashes in the Casper area,” according to a city memo.

MICHIGAN HELMET LAW REPEAL REPEAT?Once again, Michigan legislators are moving to repeal the state’s 40 year old mandatory helmet law, but their gover-nor threatens veto action. In late March, the House voted 63 to 46 to approve an amendment to the current Michi-gan Helmet Law which would allow motorcycle riders 21 years old and older to operate their motorcycle without a helmet as long as they carry $20,000 or more in insurance. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. If the


News BytesDemocratic-led House and Republican-led Senate both approve as they have in the past, the bill would again go to the governor for her signature or veto. Proposals to elimi-nate or ease the law were passed by the House and Senate in 2005/2006 and 2007/2008, but Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed both measures. ABATE of Michigan and the Michi-gan Confederation of Clubs continues to hold sway in the Legislature using arguments that include personal freedom and economic impact. The Democratic governor leaves of-fice next year and is not seeking reelection.

MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COUNCIL SURVEYS ROAD CONDITIONS The Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) to the Federal Highway Administration has made recom-mendations to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and his predecessors on various topics, including 1) Barrier design; (2) Road design, construction, and maintenance practices; and (3) The architecture and implementation of Intelligent Transportation System technologies. Of special significance was the creation and approval of the yearly Mo-torcyclist Road Conditions Survey, which can be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/ykbqsr6. The purpose of the survey is to better communicate to the MAC, road construction engi-neers, and transportation safety officials the specific needs of motorcyclists that should be considered when developing new roadways or altering existing routes. The MAC-FHWA coordinates and advises the Secretary of the Department of Transportation on infrastructure issues of concern to mo-torcycle riders, and is comprised of ten members of the mo-torcycling community with professional expertise in national motorcyclist safety advocacy. James “Doc” Reichenbach II, State President of ABATE of Florida and Chairman of the Board of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) serves on the MAC as one of two members representing state motorcyclists’ organizations.

ANTILOCK BRAKES MAKE MOTORCYCLES SAFERWith motorcycle ownership skyrocketing from 4.3 million to 10.4 million over the past decade, and a correspond-ing increase in rider deaths and injuries, two new studies have found that equipping motorcycles with antilock brakes makes them much safer. The studies, one by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the other by the Highway Loss Data Institute, found that bikes with antilock brakes are involved in 37% fewer fatal accidents per 10,000 reg-istered vehicles and reported 22% fewer accident damage claims per insured vehicle year. Stopping a motorcycle is trickier than stopping a car. For one thing, the front and rear wheels typically have separate brake controls. In an emer-gency, a rider faces a split-second choice to either brake hard, which can lock the wheels and cause an overturn, or hold back on braking and risk running into the emergency. This is when antilock brakes can help by reducing brake pressure when they detect impending lockup and then

increasing the pressure again when traction is restored. Brake pressure is evaluated multiple times per second, so riders may brake fully without fear of locking up. Until lately, such crash avoidance technology as antilock brakes has primarily been available only on larger, more expensive motorcycles, but they are now available on 60 new models.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is con-sidering whether or not antilock brakes should be manda-tory on motorcycles.

OUTLAW BIKER 101Law enforcement officers from across the country gather each year at a heavily guarded secret location for annual training on “combating biker gangs”: As quoted directly from promotional material for the course: “Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigations: From the Inside - Combating Biker Gangs, from the International Association of Undercover Officers: A five day (36 hour) training program for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, corrections personnel and criminal analysts addressing the problems and pitfalls of investigations of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. The instruc-tors, have managed, supervised or directly participated in investigations of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs throughout the United States. The investigative techniques they used will be presented. Also, the many pitfalls and mistakes they made will be graphically demonstrated. Due to the sensitive nature of the training program and threats of physical harm to some of the speakers, the exact location of the training program will only be revealed to those who register. Special security will be maintained and only certified law enforce-ment officers with proper identification will be admitted.”As one of America’s foremost authorities on biker dis-crimination, Minnesota Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) attorney Steven O’Brien, who also serves as legal counsel to the Confederation of Clubs of Minnesota and ABATE of Minnesota, applied for the course last year but was denied admittance with the written admonishment that he would be better suited to attend the NCOM Convention. O’Brien was instrumental in getting the nation’s first and only biker anti-discrimination law on the books in Minnesota, and then was successful in getting the new law upheld by the courts when an ABATE member was denied service at a bar. THE RICHMOND OUTREACH CENTERHAVEN MISSION

This past Saturday, April 10th, I was witness to one of the most significant moves of God that I have ever seen. The Richmond Outreach Center ( THE ROC ) moved to it’s new location on Midlothian Turnpike here in Richmond. I did not know just what to expect, but I knew it would be good. I had to work and got there late, bad move. I had to park across the highway because their lot was already full. I had foot surgery last month but I did not want to miss this so I hobbled across the vast expanse of the parking lot and went in. It was huge. The old Flea Market was gone. In it’s place was a large auditorium, a café, dance studio, and a host of other offices and suites.

Pastor Geronimo Aguilar came from California some years back and founded The ROC at the old location off Warwick Road. From there the ministry began it’s outreach to the needy in Richmond. The rest is history. Their growth is a testament to the prayer and hard work that has been a hallmark of The ROC. I have been to a number of large churches but I have seldom felt the excitement and fervor of the members of Pastor G’s congregation. They are “ on fire “ for the Lord and it shows.

I have known Pastor G for some time now and he has been very gracious to me. Pastor Allen Caldwell of the “ Soul Winning Soldiers “ is on my staff with Wreaths Across America and his Soldiers have helped with our motorcycle escort and ceremony for the past three years. I am very grateful to these two men for their faithfulness to God’s calling on their lives.

I experienced the worship service and Governor Bob McDonnell’s opening prayer. It was good to see a Godly statesman in action. I was very impressed. As I stood there I could not help but think about my small group at Haven Mission. It would have been easy to compare myself with Pastor G. I could have felt very intimidated because I was truly in awe, it was a wonderful experience. God called Geronimo Aguilar to ministry and he was faithful to heed God’s call. He was obedient and now The ROC is a thriving movement for Jesus Christ.

The Lord reminded me that He called me also. My problem was I did not heed His call at first. It took many years for me to realize the call God had for me. Thankfully, God was merciful with me and allowed me to finally grow up. Although my group is miniscule compared to The ROC, our mission is the same. We are to reach out with the love of Christ, preach the gospel, disciple the converts, feed the hungry, and model Christ

to a lost, fallen world.Pastor G, my hat is off to you my friend. You and your

staff and congregation are a shining example of what God will do when faithful, obedient people follow His direction and will. My prayer for you and yours is that you will remain faithful to the call Christ has given you. From what I have seen through the years, I’m sure you will.

Who Is Michele Smith?Would you believe its been TEN YEARS! since Michele Smith started hosting American Thunder?Some people in the motorcycle industry have called her an American Motorcycle Icon, The First Lady of Motorcycling, and as one 14 year old put it “She’s the ‘Pam An’ of the motorcycle industry”. Michele has changed the stereotypical im-age of a “Biker Chick” into “Biker Chic” by adding a bit of glamour to the industry. She started out in the modeling world as a pin-up girl. Most of the jobs she did were sexy-type photos seen in motorcycle calendars, posters, catalogs and magazine covers like Playboy, Muscle and Fitness, Swimwear USA, Swimwear Inter-national and Neue Revue.You may have seen her over the years in commercials, sitcoms , music videos, The Price is Right or Tim Conway’s comedy videos. Also known in Germany as “Heidi” the West Cigarette Girl, she has appeared in commercials as well as billboards and European magazines. She was spotted on the cover of Easy Riders Roadware clothing catalog and was hired as the host of American Thunder. The rest is history.She has been riding motorcycles since 1994 when she decided to take the Caifornia Motorcycle Safety Course after they hired a stunt women for her riding shots in a foreign film she was working on. “This 90lb. girl on a Harley showed up and I took one look at her and thought if she can ride that thing why can’t I? It was so embarrassing being strapped in a pick-up truck sitting on a Harley riding down Hollywood Blvd for the close-up shots. The very next day I signed up for the motorcycle safety course and ordered a Sportster from Glendale Harley. It arrived just in time to attend the ‘Love Ride’ and off I went. I loved it so much I thought, why didn’t I do this sooner? There is noth-ing better than the thrill and the sound of a motorcycle! I love working in the motorcycle industry. I always look forward to going out to as many events as possible and meeting with the fans who watch American Thunder. After all, if it weren’t for the fans, I probably wouldn’t have lasted this long in the industry. They are my supporters and I love to hang out and talk with as many of them as I can. The look on their face is priceless when they reach out to shake my hand and I hug them instead! Working in this industry enables me to test ride many different motorcycles and its nice to be able to have that opportunity. When I attend an event I never know what bike they will have waiting for me. Usually I say that I will ride whatever they throw at me, but safety is my first concern. If it’s a bike that I’m not comfortable riding I just might hesitate a little more, after all, there is that waiver I’m usually ask to sign. Hanging out with the builders that I meet at the shows is definately a real treat. These guys are a lot of fun and I think that most have accepted me now.”

Where Is Michele Smith?I’m all over the country these days. After not returning to American Thunder in 2009 I continued to be a fixture in the Motorcycle world making appearances at events and Rallies around the country. Keeping my face out there is important otherwise people forget about you. I’m very lucky to have such a loyal fan base. That’s one thing you can always rely on from a Biker is “loyalty”. The out pouring of email i received when they changed American Thunder to the “New” American Thunder was incredible. I got a lot of support from both men and woman. I have been making appearances this year around the country and recently shot a print ad for Kuryakyn’s new line of mo-torcycle luggage. I also have a new TV show that will start airing sometime in June. The show will be called “Two Wheel Thunder” and it will air on Discovery HD Theater. Jay Barbieri is the producer and will also appear on the show with me. Its about time as there are really no motorcycle shows left on TV for the V-Twin rider. Our show will be an informational motorcycle magazine show bringing you the latest and greatest in the world of motorcycles with a similar format to what the old show was. We started filming in January and they have been keeping me busy. Next week I’m off to Mexico! I even had a chance to get some cold weather riding in while shooting. Yep 30-degrees! Oh it was a bit nippy but i layered up and off i went. I wish i could say that riding in Daytona was warmer but this year it was freezing so i am looking forward to riding in Mexico thats for sure. There is no Minimum Age for Motorcycle Passengers

The short answer to that question is that there is not one. Virginia law does not restrict the age of motorcycle passen-gers. It depends upon you and your passenger’s comfort level (and that of their parent or caregiver assuming the passenger is not your child).

The code section which comes closest to addressing this issue is section 46.2-909. It states as follows:

Every person operating a motorcycle, as defined in § 46.2-100 excluding three-wheeled vehicles, shall ride only upon the permanent seat attached to the motorcycle, and such operator shall not carry any other person. No other person shall ride on a motorcycle unless the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person, in which event a passenger may ride on the permanent seat if designed for two persons, or on another seat firmly attached to the rear or side of the seat for the operator. If the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person, it shall also be equipped with a footrest for the use of such passenger. As you can see there is no age limit. The requirement is that you have a seat and footrests for the passenger. It also requires that the passenger seat be at the rear or side of the operator. That means that those of you who put your child passengers in front of you are violating the law. They must ride on the permanent passenger seat.

Another misconception for which I have had clients tick-eted (not convicted) is that if you are riding with a child as your passenger they must be able to reach the foot pegs or floor boards. That is also incorrect. There is no require-ment that they be able to reach them. The requirement is that the motorcycle be equipped with foot rests, not that the passenger use them.

In closing I want to make it clear that I am not advocating putting an 18 month old child on the rear of your bike and heading down the road. While 46.2-100 does not prohibit that you could find yourself in front of the court on a mul-titude of other criminal offenses dealing with child neglect and endangerment. We as motorcyclists must use com-

mon sense. It is up to the parents or caregivers as well as the motorcycle operator to make the determination that the child is old enough to hold on and stay alert. It is also up to the parents or caregivers as well as the motorcycle operator to determine the limits of the ride. How far will you go and what routes will you take? Most of us riders remember rid-ing on the back of a bike when we were young and having a ball doing it. So long as you follow the guidelines above then you should have no problem helping another kid enjoy that same thrill. Who knows, maybe they will become an avid rider and pay that favor forward one day.

I recently took a class at a conference on the parking of vehicles on highways and roadways during an emer-gency situation. It was extremely informative, these types of classes usually are. During one of the many videos that we viewed during the class, I noticed that there was a motorcycle police officer that was working an accident on a busy suburban boulevard, along with other emergency vehicles on the scene. Many emergency vehicles are the target of secondary collisions at the original accident
