Another year flying by too fast for me. It’s already June… almost half way through the year.

This year we have sponsored so many events – with more coming - all across the entire state. So much activity! We are still looking for events to sponsor this fall. If you have one - email me!

Our BIKE NIGHTS in Houston are still going strong. We’ve been holding these since November 2008, not missing a month... rain or shine. Last year, we added a second location, with Bob and I alternating between north and south. It’s been a lot of fun and we can’t thank our venues enough - Concert Pub North (JD) and Jackie’s Brickhouse (John). And of course, the continued support of Outlaw Dave.

We also continue to sponsor the Lone Star Bike Nights in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. If you know of a bike night in your area you think we should sponsor, let me know!

It’s been a great riding year so far… here’s to hoping for a better second half. Whew… I’m tired! We highlight a few of the events our staff attended in this issue… check it out! And if you’re interested in writing and/or taking pictures for Thunder Roads Texas, just email me and we’ll get you started. With all this excitement, we can share the fun!

Ride safe... and ride with THUNDER!

A SPECIAL RIPI appreciate this act of kindness on your part, by the way I picked up this months edition of your magazine at Wild West Harley in Lubbock Texas. My father passed away at the age of 96, in his younger days he had an Indian motorcycle. When I snapped this picture of him I asked him to turn and look at the camera his reply....”I can’t, I am riding!”

is no secret that our motorcycles are an extension of ourselves and our customizing lets others know, at a glance, something about us and our personality.

From mild to wild, blinged-out or blacked-out, stripped, slammed, state of the art or old school, mellow or loud, our options are endless. Let’s face it; with manufacturers offering factory customs right off the show room floor, some folks choose to ride their bikes pretty close to stock these days. That being said, whether you ride a little or you ride a lot, it is only a matter of time before some parts wear out and need to be replaced. Even if you are happy with the parts that were stock on your machine, the more you ride the sooner you are going to need to replace some parts. This month’s focus is on handle bar grips.

Let us assume it is time or you just want to replace the handgrips on your motorcycle. Your options are virtually endless, so where do you start? If you are like I am, if it’s not broken, I generally don’t replace it. Handle bar grips are an exception. It is all about fit, form and function and the way you feel how your machine is handling on the road. Ergonomics are paramount when choosing handgrips as it is virtually impossible to ride safely if you cannot comfortably reach your hand controls or your hands are numb, slick, sweaty, or frozen while you are riding. Have you ever had your gloves wad up in your palms while you were riding? Or worse, have you ridden with such a heavy

glove that you felt like you’re wearing boxing gloves? We all get caught in inclement weather situations now and again, but if you’re riding uncomfortably on a regular basis, you are taking unnecessary risks and not truly enjoying the time you are getting to ride.

In my 40 + years of riding virtually every brand of bike available to the riding public, and even some that are no longer in production, (am I showing my age yet?), I can truly say that Harley-Davidson handle bar grips are the most functional, ergonomic and durable grips I have ever had the privilege of using. With the many styles available, including various diameters and adjustable heated grips; you can find the grip that is right for your bike, your hand, and your region. I like the Nostalgic Grip 56275-08 for my Bike. These grips are comfortable and truly nostalgic. They have an hourglass style and are a fresh twist to a classic design! These rubber grips were inspired by Harley-Davidson® motorcycles of the 1940s. You may have heard the saying “The Past Is Prologue” and in this case, they are the introduction to an awesome ride and great comfort! These classic-look handgrips that feature a classic bicycle grip shape are easy-to-install and are the ideal match if you lean toward the traditional styling.

If these grips just don’t GRIP you like they did us, Harley-Davidson offers more than 40 different styles of handgrips

that range from 1.3 to 1.6 inches in diameter and another 14 styles of adjustable heated grips.

Let us not forget the convenience of being able to walk into your local Harley-Davidson dealership and have a parts professional or service writer help you in your handgrip selection process. A grip in the hand is better than two in the magazine! Remember, beauty is only chrome deep, so choose a handle bar grip that fits your hand, fits the theme of your motorcycle, and is designed for the weather elements in which you most commonly ride. So, get a grip!!!!

You can get your Nostalgic Grips at Harley-Davidson.com in their shopping section. Better yet, just stop in to your local Harley Shop! The parts department can help you pick the perfect grips!

Insurance Coverage - Part II

elcome back all you rock and rollers of the two wheeled thunder. Sit back and relax as we roll down the road for part two of my two part series

regarding insurance coverage. Now don’t roll your eyes at me like that. I know that talking about insurance is really boring stuff. But it is important and we do need to talk about this. I wouldn’t be doing my job unless I was absolutely sure that all of my friends were properly covered out there on the road.

Last month, we talked with our attorney, Mr. Bill Smith with DFW Tax Attorney. Bill represents bikers who have been injured in accidents. He is also one of many lawyers who are there to protect our rights not only as bikers but as human beings. He was gracious enough to answer some questions about insurance coverage from a lawyer’s point of view. By doing so, we have a better picture of what kinds of insurances are available. Some of his answers brought forth even more questions as to what exactly our own coverage really is, so we put his answers to the test by getting an insurance provider’s point of view.

Rainman and I met up with our insurance agent, Brandi, with Freeway Insurance Agency. You may notice that Freeway Insurance is also one of Thunder Roads Advertisers. We went in, sat down and told her who we were. Before we could be thrown out, we presented our insurance card and began to ask the same questions we did our attorney. To keep things simple here, I wrote a summary of what we heard and some of it was quite surprising!

1. Our service representative, Brandi, is currently in a relationship and flirting with her did not work to our advantage to get cheaper rates.

2. Go with an insurance agent you are comfortable with. Make sure they are competent in dealing with motorcycle coverage. Remember, they are there to sell, sell, sell, and to make money. If you are not receiving their full attention or service, find yourself another agent

3. Beware of the “cut-rate” insurance companies; there is a reason they are called that! Ask them about their ratings. Make sure they are a reliable and reputable company.

4. Don’t settle for “liability only” coverage on your bike because it is cheap. Fully investigate all available coverage options. You may be shorting yourself of an important coverage you really need.

5. If you have an active loan on your bike, you will be required by the bank to have “full coverage”. Know what is contained in your full coverage before you purchase. Some of the replacement coverage (fire, flood, and hail) may already be covered under your homeowner’s policy.

6. Ask questions over and over. Place yourself in different situations like… “Your fault vs. their fault”. Who is covered, for what, and for how much? Make the insurance people tell you what you need to know. If you have to find additional answers then talk to a claims representative.

7. The 30/60/25 minimum coverage does not cover as much as you think it will. The 30 represents $30,000 per person up to a maximum of $60,000 per accident. That means if one person is injured in an accident by your fault, you are only providing $30,000 of coverage for that one person. If three people are injured you are only providing up to $60,000.00 for all three. The $25,000 covers their vehicle and any other property damage. What if they hit a street sign or light pole? Guess what? You also owe the state a new light pole. Anything over the $25,000 comes out of your pocket! If you have a lot to protect in life, you may want to increase the amount of your basic coverage.

8. Insurance is generally sold in units called endorsements; each endorsement added to your policy adds the additional coverage. Full coverage is basically a liability only package with added endorsements or coverage.

9. Take the time to price shop other insurance companies before you purchase. You might find yourself a better deal.

10. While liability-only will not cover your injuries in an accident that is your fault, it will, however, cover injuries suffered by your passenger.

11. If you don’t have Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) on your policy, you need to get it. About 20% of drivers in Texas do not have coverage. If you are hit by someone without insurance, you are stuck with ALL the bills unless you have UM/UIM coverage.

12. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage verses health insurance: If you do not have health insurance,

you need to purchase Personal Injury Protection. PIP is coverage that pays for medical expenses no matter who is at fault. However, PIP is very expensive. Health insurance is less expensive per dollar of coverage and more comprehensive.

13. Review your policies at least once a year. People’s situations at home change all the time. Adjust your policies as needed.

Protect yourself, protect your rights, and protect your family. Remember, every time we ride, ride as though there was a large target painted on your back for people to aim at. If you don’t have an attorney on stand-by, get one. Keep their number handy (like in your wallet) and if you are involved in an accident, contact them immediately. If you want to find one, peruse the pages of this fine publication… there are a few options here.

I cannot stress the importance of having proper insurance coverage. Being a writer for Thunder Roads Texas allows me access to a vast network of information. That network tells us when bikers go down. Sadly, it happens more often then you may think. In the time between writing two articles in two months, I witnessed a car run over two bikers at a stop sign. It was not cool, especially when the driver took off on them. Be careful out there. One day soon we’ll meet up at the bar to have a drink and share some road tales. Let’s have our insurance in order so that we can both be there safely and with peace of mind.

Ride HARD of stay home!

ell this 83rd Legislative session has been slow moving, but interestingly, with bikers trying to get SB763 and HB2279 passed to allow a motorcycle

safety course for trikes/three wheeled vehicles. We have also been sending letters and making calls about HB928 which nullifies all federal gun laws. On Saturday, May 4, state representatives passed seven different gun laws, one of which was HB928 asserting the state’s rights on regulating firearms and accessories. So many thanks to all the bikers who wrote letters in favor of this bill. To read the entire bill, go to: Capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/83R/billtext/pdf/HB00928I.pdf#navpanes=0.

TMRA2 is hopeful the trike bill will go through all the way to the governor’s desk to sign. But if the pace in Austin does not pick up, a lot of good bills will be killed due to time constraints.

Another bill that we are helping along is SB1515; Senator Ellis’s bicycle bill which also includes motorcycles. The bill is for all unprotected road users including: pedestrians, runners, physically disabled persons, children, skaters, highway construction and maintenance workers, tow truck operators, utility workers, other workers with legitimate business in or near the road or right-of-way, stranded motorists or passengers; persons on horseback; persons operating equipment other than a motor vehicle (including

a bicycle, hand cycle), horse-driven conveyance, unprotected farm equipment; persons operating motorcycles, mopeds, motor-driven cycles, and motor-assisted scooters.

The bill includes stiffer penalties for serious injury or death. That section reads:

(h )A violation of this section i s punishable under Section 542.401 except that: (1) if the violation results in property damage, the violation is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $500; or(2) i f the violation results in bodily injury, the violation is a Class B misdemeanor.

(i) It is a defense to prosecution under this section that at the time of the offense the unprotected road user was acting in violation of the law.

It’s an aggressive bill for all other road user’s and will probably have to be amended before it will be brought into a committee hearing. Nevertheless our hats off to “Bike Texas” for their efforts on this bill and we support it as well.

It’s cold. The temperature gauge says its 43 degrees as I leave the house at 3:00 a.m. and I don’t believe it will be warming up anytime soon. I’ve ridden in the cold before but for some reason cold and dark together seems as though it doubles the chill. The weatherman said it would warm to 70 degrees or better today, the first day of spring 2013, but I have my doubts. The rest of the day will be a winding round-trip ride between my home in Central Texas and Shamrock – some 1,080 miles in 20 hours – via Lubbock, Farwell, and Amarillo. Mistakenly, I had actually believed the weatherman and thought it might warm up during the day. Wrong! Of all the digital thermometers on the bank signs along the way, I never see one that reaches 60 degrees all day long. As my fingers and toes begin to tingle during the first hour of my ride in the darkness, I question my sanity and think to myself, “You should have worn another layer or two and packed those damned glove liners!” It warms my heart (puns intended) to know that this is the start of the 2013 Heart of Texas Rally – The HOT Rally.

The start of the HOT Rally, and the rally itself, need some explanation. The HOT Rally is not the typical rally with games, bands, poker runs, or overnight camping. It is a 12-hour scavenger hunt across the entire state of Texas – or at least

A HOT Time in Texas

The Heart of Texas Unique Bonus Ride March 20, 2013

By Randy McCamey, TRT Associate Editor

A Ride Map Two-Part Special Edition

Part 1: Unique Bonus Ride

Page 19: Thunder Roads Texas - June 2013

strategic parts of the state that contain “points” at locations determined by the Rally Master, James Stovall. These point locations are given to the riders a mere 72 hours before the start of the rally. Each rider has to look at the point locations and determine what route can be ridden to pick up the most points in 12 hours on the day of the rally between their starting location and Brady. Located in McCulloch County, Brady is the geographic center of the state which is also known as the Heart of Texas, thus the name of the rally. In short, riders have exactly 12 hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) to get from their starting location to Brady while picking up points along the way. Evidence that riders pick up points, also known as “tagging”, is usually either an electronic receipt with a time, date, and location stamp on it or a picture of the bonus location with the riders rally flag (i.e., the rider number) visible in the photograph. The camera also has to be set to record the time and date as additional evidence.

About two months before the rally this year, James sent a request to registered riders offering them the opportunity to earn rally points before the actual start date. This early point offering was added as a “Unique Bonus” and was a change (and a challenge) for 2013.

I responded in the affirmative and a few weeks later I was excited when I received an email from Rally Master Stovall with the clue to the Unique Bonus location. My winter mileage had been scant and I was ready to get the riding season started! The clue to the Unique Bonus was a picture of a pair of road signs on a single post. Specifically, there was a 40 MPH speed limit sign and a road sign identifying Texas Farm Road 2013. That was it; that was the entire clue.

Based on the clue, I began a diligent search via the internet for FM 2013 in Texas. I quickly discovered that FM 2013 was a short farm road in Parmer County running northwest between Friona (the Cheeseburger Capital of Texas complete with their Texas Cheeseburger Festival held the third weekend of July) and the New Mexico state line. The only other hint was the 40 MPH speed limit sign. Deductive reasoning suggested that the Unique Bonus was either near Friona, near one of the 90-degree turns in the 26-mile long road, or possibly at the Texas-New Mexico border.

To collect the Unique Bonus, extra rally points, and an award certificate based on mileage, James had included one other teeny tiny requirement: the ride had to cover at least 500, 750, 1,000, or 1,500 miles (rider’s choice) in less than 24 hours. So, not only did I have to find a needle in a hay stack, I had to do some seriously long miles to get the Unique Bonus points!

As long time readers know I’m something of a distance rider, having completed several Iron Butt rides in the past, so this ride would be nothing new. Long distances in cold temperatures, now that was something new! If I was going to do a long ride, I wanted to get the most bang-for-the-

buck, and as the minimum to qualify for an Iron Butt is 1,000 miles in 24 hours, that is where I set my sights.

I’m shivering as I ride along the Interstate due to my own poor planning. My legs are cramping because they have been tensed up against the cold for the last hour. I make an unscheduled stop at a fast food joint in Sweetwater for a warm place to sit and a hot cup of coffee. I’ll next be riding northwest through a jungle of the massive wind turbines that make Nolan and Scurry Counties the Wind Turbine center of Texas. Some 9% of Texas electricity came from wind energy in 2012. This hot caffeine is a critical ingredient at the moment and it is the only thing that keeps me from turning around and calling an end to this insanity!

My planned ride was to run west on I-20 through Abilene and Sweetwater, northwest through Lubbock to Farwell, then northeast through Amarillo to Shamrock. This route would take me through Friona where I was guessing I

would find the Unique Bonus. Shamrock would be the half-way point where I would turn around and ride back along the same route. On the return trip, I gave myself an extra hour of time once in Friona to travel FM 2013 in search of the Unique Bonus.

With a warm belly and a bit of a thaw in the fingers and toes, I roll north on Highway 84. It’s still dark and it’s still cold and the cold keeps creeping in. Soon I remember that there is a nice station at the intersection of 84 and 180 near Snyder that would be another good stopping point to warm up both body and soul. Just my luck; there’s road construction in the area, the exit I need is closed, and in the dark I see no way to get to the station without burning a lot of extra time. I curse under my breath, bite my lip, hunker down behind the windshield, and twist the throttle. It is just starting to turn daylight when I make it to my first scheduled stop in Post for gas and grub. My legs are stiff and it takes me a few minutes just to get off the damned motorcycle.

Post is a quiet little town on the edge of the caprock in the

Texas panhandle. It is also a major crossroad as US 84 and US 380 cut through town. Post sees its share of traffic whether 18 wheels, 4 wheels, on only 2 wheels. If you are interested in side trips, Lubbock boasts some of the states top wineries. The Llano Estacado Winery is located on FM 1585 just southeast of Lubbock and offers wine tastings and a great selection of wines. I always keep a bottle of Llano wine around the house myself.

The early morning sun is up as I ride through Lubbock toward Farwell, my second planned stop. I’m still cold but no longer freezing as the sunlight seems to cut some of the chill. I’ve ridden this road before but today something about this stretch of flat Texas panhandle, the light traffic, and the morning sun warming my leathers makes this a particularly spectacular time to be on a motorcycle. I crack a smile as I think to myself, “This is what riding is all about”.

Riding northeast from Farwell,

I’m facing the sun so I think I’m warming up even if the temperatures are not going up all that much. I pass through Friona, but as I have to make 1,000 miles or more for the trip, I continue rolling on toward Amarillo. On the return leg, I’ll have to spend time hunting for the bonus location so I’ll get to know Friona a bit better in just a few hours. As I pass through Amarillo I ride past The Big Texan Steak Ranch and wish I had more time to sample some really good grub. The banana chips, yogurt, and jerky I have are keeping my head and stomach on speaking terms, but the taste of that combination leaves a lot to be desired.

I’ve ridden some nice long stretches of Historic Route 66 in both New Mexico and Arizona and I still have fond memories of those trips. Old 66 across the Texas Panhandle is, well, less than inspiring. Much of 66 is buried under I-40, but I spot a few broken patches of the Mother Road off to the side of the Interstate as I travel along.

As is often the case, Old 66 peels off the Interstate and becomes Main Street in most of the small towns along the way. As much as I’d like to make a slow cruise through Groom, Alanreed, and McLean, I push on to my turnaround point in Shamrock. 540 miles down, 540 to go.

I grab some lunch – my only real food for the day – gas up the bike and head back from whence I came. Temperatures

have warmed slightly, but only just a bit, so I peel off one layer and switch my heavy gloves for a lighter weight pair. I had hoped to visit the historic art deco

A HOT Time in Texas ... continued

Page 21: Thunder Roads Texas - June 2013

styled U-Drop Inn along Route 66 in Shamrock, but the cold earlier this morning forced me to reduce my speed and make a few unplanned stops, thus losing time. It’s just after 1:00 p.m. and I’m already an hour behind schedule.

Between Amarillo and Farwell on the return trip, the sky turns hazy. The West Texas wind is picking up and there is dust in the air. Not enough dust to be a bother riding but enough to make the sun and the street signs and the buildings seem ghost-like in appearance.

I spotted the turn for FM 2013 when I came through Friona a few hours ago so now, back in Friona, I start hunting. I turn onto the road and speed up…but not for long. A mere block from the official start of FM 2013 is the sign post I have been looking for and I just rode past it! I’m surprised it is this close to town. I was expecting it to be in a much more remote location. A quick U-turn, I park the bike, and attach my rally flag to the windshield – which is now a real challenge as the wind gusts are 30 MPH or more – and I snap a picture as proof of my tag.

I’m glad it didn’t take me the hour I had scheduled to find the Unique Bonus. Behind schedule already, this will help me pick up some time. On the road again toward Farwell I begin to second-guess myself and wonder whether, with the wind gusts and the angle I parked, did my picture actually capture my rally flag and the sign posts? If not, I was going to have to back-track and do it all over again – losing valuable time in the process. I spot an abandoned building along the road, so I pull into the parking area and check my picture. Yep, I got it. The rally flag and the two signs are clearly visible.

I gas up once again in Farwell and head southeast through Lubbock toward Post, my next gas stop some133 miles away. After leaving Post, I’m hoping to make I-20 by dark but dark catches me about an hour north, just out of Snyder.

One benefit to the first ride of the season is that you get to check out all those winter upgrades. I recently installed a new LED headlight on my bike and I’m getting to check it out before riding season really gets going. What a difference! The new light has a lot more depth and throws a lot more light to the sides of the road making it easier for me to see Bambi should she decide to step onto the highway. I also upgraded my seat to one that is air adjustable. Wow, there is no comparison between the stock seat and this one. I really do like riding on air! I think I made some good investments.

Along with the darkness of the evening, the temperatures begin to drop. This renews my resolve to complete this ride as soon as possible but also as safely as possible. My digits are beginning to tingle again, so I pull off the road near Roscoe and don the layer I pulled off earlier along with my heavy gloves and reflective vest. Back on the road, I catch the traffic of I-20 as I roll through Sweetwater headed east. As a traveler, whether in a car or riding a motorcycle, I have something of a love-hate relationship with Sweetwater. Heading west, Sweetwater is a comfortable distance from home; a great place to stop just far enough away from home to get used to the road, the traffic, and the anticipation of doing something different for a few days. Sweetwater has several well-kept

gas stations and fast food places along I-20 making it an easy-on, easy-off proposition whether you are headed east or west. Headed east, as is my present situation, Sweetwater is a nightmare because it means I am still over two hours away from home. I’m convinced that the longest stretch of highway in the world is travelling east between Sweetwater and Eastland along I-20. For some reason the mile markers seem to be 10 miles apart and tonight the traffic seems to be in slow motion. I take a deep breath and push on.

I finally make it to Eastland, the last stop on my ride, where I gas up just outside of town. A few more miles and I’m home. Other than the cold this morning, it was not a bad day to ride. It’s just after 10:00 p.m. and I am emailing my Unique Bonus picture to Rally Master Stovall for verification per his instructions. Tomorrow I’ll get an email that says, “Congratulations for a ride well done, you earned 50 points.” Right now, I’m just tired so I think I’ll go to bed. As I close my eyes, I remember that this was just the bonus ride; the real HOT Rally hasn’t even started yet! I’m already looking forward to next month.

For inormation about this year’s Heart of Texas Rally, visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HeartOfTexasRally. And let us know if you participate next year!

EDITOR’S NOTE: In July, Randy highlights his HOT Rally ride as Part 2 of this special series.

Texas Thunder HD Annual Chili Cook OffMarch 16, 2013 * NacogdochesPhotos by Leah Hanscom, TRT CorrespondentEach year, Texas Thunder Harley-Davidson in Nacogdoches holds its popular Chili Cook Off. Teams from all over East Texas join in on the fun. They offer free chili samples and beverages to attendees.

This year, Glenn Lenderman provided the entertainment and the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter had animals on site for adoption. Texas Thunder offered a free Harley-Davidson pet toy for each pet adoption during the event.

A 50/50 raffle was held. Proceeds benefited the Disable American Veterans (DAV), to assist local East Texas wounded service men and women.

Trophies for best (and worst – “Crappiest”) were handed out around 2:00 p.m.

The weather was gorgeous, perfect for chili-eating!

The Texas Mile is AMAZING!March 22-24, 2013 * Chase Field, BeevilleBy Chere Laine, TRT Sales/CorrespondentA rare tailwind and cool temperatures helped make this season’s Texas Mile shoot-out style races even more exciting than usual. The objective: Get your vehicle to the starting position, go as fast as you can for one mile, stop within half a mile, pick up your time slip, and get back in line for another run.

At first glance it looks like a free-for-all, but the organizers work very hard to host an event that runs as smoothly and safely as possible. Each vehicle and driver must comply with regulations and rules, pass safety inspections, and participate in trial runs. Mandatory driver’s meetings are held several times over the weekend. Volunteers from the Christian Motorcycle Association are on hand to provide coffee and water, direct spectator traffic, and provide spiritual support as needed. Students from area colleges, voc-tech schools, and high schools are also involved. Participants come from all over, even Canada.

Spectators are allowed to get a close look at the vast array of competing cars, motorcycles, trucks, station wagons and a mini-van or two and visit with the drivers in the staging area near the starting line or pit areas along the old runway. Several lighted signs display the speed of the passing vehicles at the half-mile mark, then again when it clears the mile mark. Cheers of celebration, sighs of relief, and moans of shared disappointment can be heard between the whirring, growling, revving and whooshing of hyped-up engines and hot tires.

About 26 motorcycles were registered to run in March with about 19 of their runs clocking-in at over 200 MPH! A few interesting facts are here and more information, including a list of drivers, vehicles and clocked speeds, is available on the Texas Mile website and Facebook page.

Make plans to attend the next amazing high-speed shoot-out October 25-27, 2013!

Fastest Motorcycle Rider Of The Weekend: Mark Tredway, 230.1MPH, 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa 1300, single turbo. Most Runs On A Motorcycle: Rebecca Ebert riding her 2008 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Rebecca ran a total of 20 runs.Hottest Bike: Rod Borsche, #1000- 2008 Honda CBR 1000 RR.World’s Fastest Female On A Motorcycle: Jennifer Robertson’s speed record of 243.6MPH from The Texas Mile October 2012 still stands.

Statistics compliments of Ms. Jessica Reyna, J&S Matus Motorsports, Inc. Director of Customer Experience - The Texas Mile.

Snake’s 17th Annual Easter RunMarch 30 * GalvestonBy Donny Phillips, TRT CorrespondentAround 350 bikers brought Easter a day early to the children at the Shriners Burn Hospital for Children on Snakes 17th Annual Easter Run. The folks at Heartbreakers on I-45 graciously lent us their parking lot early Saturday morning before Easter to stage our ride.

The members of the Warriors Bikers 4 Charity MC organized an enormous donation of baskets and money for the children at the burn center. Bikers brought in 500 Easter baskets and hundreds of toys. The donation response was so overwhelming that it took us almost 30 minutes to unload and arrange the baskets for distribution once we arrived at the hospital.

In addition to the baskets and toys, the bikers and club went all out in gathering cash donations. Snake from the Warriors MC raised $2,600 by auctioning off his ponytail. The MC, as a group, collected $1,700 and were able to collect more from riders before the ride started. In total, the cash donations exceeded $12,000.

It was a very emotional experience to witness the children come out to visit the riders, sit on the bikes, and receive their baskets. We were able to visit and get pictures of them with their favorite bikes.

I’d like to thank the Warriors Bikers 4 Charity MC for opening up this opportunity for us and allowing us to be a part of such a gracious work. They have been running this ride safely and accident free for 17 years now, an awesome record by all counts. I look forward to riding again in 2014.

Ride Safe!

4th Annual Carts, Bikers & Babes RallyApril 11-14, 2013 * Lake SomervilleSponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!By Shelly Horan, TRT Managing Editor/OwnerThis was a banner year for the Carts, Bikers & Babes Rally. I have never seen Big Creek Park so jam packed with campers, tents, bikes, carts, and all kinds of kookiness! Even Damon Dave and Wendy were tickled with this year’s turn out. The park was stock full!

Bands were rocking the whole time… and the new Battle of the After Hours Campsite Parties was a hit! Our friend, Bruce “The Caveman” Margolis was there with his “Cavegirls” filming a TV show. The girls were handing out samples of Texas Honey by Texas Silver Star Whiskey – yum!

Attendees were in rare form as well. The weather held out for a very pleasant weekend… and yes, some clothing was left behind. The weekend was full of cart races, “Bring Out Your Bad” custom cart and bike show, biker games, tattoo contest, vendors, and so much more, it’s hard to list it all! For Saturday night’s headliner, The Moonshine Bandits, Damon Dave had a surprise! He handed out shots of real life moonshine to have a drink with his friends.

We got to hang with Bag Lady Sue. Such a doll! She’s great in person – on stage and off. We can’t wait to hang with her again soon. Maybe get her into Houston for a gig? Hmmm… And to top it all off, the Tribe of Judah had a huge tent set up for Sunday morning services. If you’re looking to continue the party – check out TheTexasRally.com!

Hill Country HollerApril 12-14Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!By Ron LimbockBeing a first-year rally, attendance was lower than what we wanted. But everyone that did make it this year said they loved the venue and would be back. All of our customers said the Wild West Town and roaming entertainers were a big hit. The Wild Life Tour surprised me as to how many people went on it. It was packed all of the time.

From a city standpoint we are fully endorsed to return by the Boerne Economic Development Commission, Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Kendall County Sheriff, Fire EMS and Emergency Management Departments and the Ranch owners. There were zero arrests or incidents. Looks like a first year winner to me! The best comment I heard about the venue…Peaceful! How about that for a motorcycle rally?

The Hill Country Holler is the motorcycle rally for people who want something different from the norm. Something more than a few vendors, a couple of local bands, naughty stuff in the campground at night, and maybe a short poker run. They want to be part of a community enjoying great camaraderie with food, drink, shopping, and lots of relaxation. They want to be see the latest in the motorcycle world, be entertained by top tier music, play on/at fun attractions, ride our beautiful countryside, and get to share the experience with their entire family!

All of the bands loved the venue and our incredible stage and production! It was unfortunate that Los Lonely Boys had to cancel on Friday due to an injury. I hope Kenny heals soon. Brian Howe of course broke all the rules when he allowed Pistol Packin’ Paula to join him on stage and twirl her pistols. As far as Friday goes the Texas Tornados jumped in and put on one heck of a show. Asleep at the Wheel… what can I say? Nine well deserved Grammy Awards; consummate showmen (and lady!). They hit the stage and played every hit they are known for. People sang every word to almost every song. They were a great way to end the Hill Country Holler!

As with all good organizers, we listen to our rally goers and vendors… looking to make changes that will only make the rally better next year. Site changes may include a ride up stage configuration and parking closer to the Old WestTown. We are absolutely changing the way we priced our camping. We are also going to make it much easier to get tickets. Watch for the motorcycle business near you to get your tickets next year. Or, if you live in the Hill Country, the Boerne EMS/Fire Departments will carry tickets.

The Oldest Town in Texas RallyApril 19-21, 2013Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!By Jason English and Joyce Siegert, TRT CorrespondentsThis year the town of Nacogdoches played host to the 5th Annual Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally. This is their 5th year but the first year it has been held in the spring. In the past it was held in September.

Although the nights were at little on the cold side, the daytime temperatures were just right for enjoying all the activities at the rally. It was also perfect riding weather for those who ventured out to ride some of our great East Texas back roads. The local HOG Chapter provided maps highlighting the beautiful East Texas Piney Woods around Nacogdoches.

There was a “We Fight Like a Girl” charity fun run and a popular Downtown Parade on the old brick roads in historic Nacogdoches. This year’s biker games where provided by Blowout Biker Productions. There was a great variety of nice bikes to see and great bands to keep everyone entertained all weekend. With over 30 BBQ teams there for the cook-off, and various other vendors, there was plenty of good food to eat.

Throughout the weekend they had vendors, bike detailers, and a beer garden to cool off your thirst as well as food vendors. The vendors were scattered around the fairgrounds (in the parking lot after entering the rally), in Pavilion 1, and inside the new civic center. There were several leather, patch, tattoo, clothing, and food vendors.

A special thanks to CMA for all their assistance and support for without them this would not have possibly run as easily for the OTT Organizers. They manned the sign-in booth as well as directing us all into the rally and watching the gates.

Hope to see you there next year.

Texas COC&I/US Defenders State RallyApril 19-21, 2013Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!By Rainman, TRT CorrespondentThe Confederation of Clubs, U.S. Defenders and Coalition of Independent Riders, held their annual State Rally at Bryant’s Ice House in Katy. It was a time for clubs from all over the state of Texas to come together for three days of fun in the sun. They also managed to squeeze a little work in too! The perfect weekend weather made the ride to Katy a great way to spend the weekend.

A quick scan of the area found campsites to the rear of the property, motorcycle parking was to the right, and the main bar with cold drinks and a friendly atmosphere was on the left. It was a biker’s paradise. In the Rally area, vendors of all types formed a horseshoe around the pavilion and stage. Of course, you know the first thing one must buy is the event T-shirt. Having that done, I began to check out the other vendors. All the important vendors were there including the motorcycle safety awareness folks, the lawyer representatives, the insurance guys, and, of course, the fight for biker rights guys, too.

No rally is ever complete without raffle tickets. They were on sale to win everything from a bottle of liquor to a customized motorcycle and a few other door prizes as well. It was fun watching Pig hitting on the girls selling tickets. That little perv of a porker will do anything to get a hug! It didn’t take long for the smoke wavering through the air to entice our taste buds as sausage, hamburgers, and even Philly cheese steaks sizzled on the grills. I have to give kudos to the staff of Bryant’s Ice House, the efficiency of the bar proved to be top-notch as the service was fast and the beer was ice cold.

For crowd entertainment there were biker games of all kinds. There was tough competition with the loudest bike contest, as big bore V-Twins battled for bragging rights against the sport bike guys. If that wasn’t enough for you, there was the mechanical bull ride to prove how tough you were. I love watching people ride the bull. The iron man contest displayed the boxing skills of a few bikers. Those skills showed that you should never discount the smaller guy in a fight. Get in that one good shot and the big guy will fall!

The rally was a great opportunity to see some old friends and a chance to make some new ones. Biker pride shown bright and clean on the faces of the men and women who know and understand what expressing freedom is really all about. The fact that so many clubs can come together on common ground and stand together for our rights as bikers proves just how tight the biker community truly is.

Back The Badge RideApril 20, 2013Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!By Donny Phillips, TRT CorrespondentThree people died instantly in the Boston bombing this April and numerous bystanders were grievously wounded. Many more would have died from their injuries if EMS and other first responders had not been at the scene to stabilize them and transport them to more advanced emergency care. One Law Enforcement Officer lost his life helping his partners apprehend one of the bombers.

Every day, these men and women stand in the gap between life and death for our sake. 123 riders, along with many volunteers, rode to honor our Fire, Police, and EMS responders and raised over $3,000 on the 7th Annual Back The Badge Ride for the 100 Club.

Police escorts from numerous cities escorted the riders from San Jacinto Harley Davidson to the Sam Houston Race Track for the Texas Association of First Responders Wild Game Cook Off. If you have never been in a large group ride, I highly recommend starting out in one like this.

You cannot find a safer or better planned ride; it is great for first timers and the funds go to a great cause in helping the families of fallen heroes.

I’d like to personally thank the Ponderosa Fire Department for their hospitality and for feeding us at the cook off.

This event will be held again next year, so start looking for the 8th Annual Back The Badge Ride on Facebook in March of 2014 for details. Please come out and show support for the men and women who put their lives on the line for us. I hope to see you there.

“Dad, are bugs good to eat?” asked the boy.

“Let’s not talk about such things at the dinner table, son,” his father replied.

After dinner the father inquired, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?”

“Oh, nothing,” the boy said. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.”

Three Little Pigs went out to dinner one night. The waiter came and took their drink order.

“I would like a Sprite,” said the first little piggy.

“I would like a Coke,” said the second little piggy.

“I want beer, lots and lots of beer,” said the third little piggy.

The drinks were brought out and the waiter took their orders for dinner.

“I want a nice big steak,” said the first piggy.

“I would like the salad plate,” said the second piggy.

“I want beer, lots and lots of beer,” said the third little piggy.

The meals were brought out and a while later the waiter approached the table and asked if the piggies would like any dessert.

“I want a banana split,” said the first piggy.

“I want a cheesecake,” said the second piggy.

“I want beer, lots and lots of beer,” exclaimed the third little piggy.

“Pardon me for asking,” said the waiter to the third little piggy, “But why have you only ordered beer all evening?”

The third piggy replies, “Well, duh…..somebody has to go ‘Wee, wee, wee, all the way home!”

A small boy was at the zoo with his father. They were looking at the tigers, and his father was telling him how ferocious they were.

“Daddy, if the tigers got out and ate you up…”

“Yes, son?” the father asked, ready to console him.

“… which bus would I take home?”

My father had a profound influence on me. He was a lunatic.

~ Spike Milligan, comedian

Four biker dudes are in the hospital waiting room because their wives are having babies. A nurse goes up to the first biker and says, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins.”

“That’s odd,” answers the guy. “I work for the Minnesota Twins!”

A nurse says to the second biker, “Congratulations! You’re the father of triplets!”

“That’s weird,” answers the second man. “I work for the 3M Company!”

A nurse tells the third biker, “Congratulations! You’re the father of quadruplets!”

“That’s strange,” he answers. “I work for the Four Seasons hotel!”

The last biker is groaning and banging his head against the wall. “What’s wrong?” the others ask.

“I work for 7 Up!”

My father worked for the same firm for twelve years. They fired him. They replaced him with a tiny gadget - this big - that does everything my father does, only it does it much better. The depressing thing is, my mother ran out and bought one.

hile visiting the Hill Country Hol-ler (April 2013; Boerne; from the

creator of the Lone Star Rally)… we sat in one of the saloons, resting our feet, and enjoyed an amazing band! Cameran Nelson and Guardrail Damage Ahead took the stage at the Silver Spur Saloon in the Old West Town that was at the heart of this new rally. The closed it down with good music and a great show!

The band if made up of Cameran Nelson (lead vocals and guitar), Jesse Stratton (guitar and vocals), Steve Burkheart (bass guitar), and Keith Morgan (drums). Between Cameran and Jesse, you couldn’t help but sit dumbfounded as they jumped around (liter-ally) and put on an exhilarating performance. They play some cover, but mostly their own music. The band’s music has elements of mod-ern country, blues, and good old fashioned southern rock.

My favorite song is “Happy To Beer”. It’s easy to sing-along (actually, you can’t help yourself) and it’s just plain fun! But there a plenty of other offerings that I’m sure will appeal to many, including love songs about his wife and family (sorry girls, he’s taken).

Cameran comes from a musical family; playing bass guitar in his father’s band at only 13 years old. When he was 17, he lost his best friend in a car accident, bring-ing out some truly “loss” songs that are well done. He eventually went to South Plains College to study voice and guitar.

“Getting on stage and playing is just that!” says Cameran about his show. “The work is over and we get to cut loose and have some fun!”

And have fun we did! It was great to hang with the band, talking music, drinking beer… all in a day’s work for us at Thunder Roads Texas. We “suffer” to bring you the best content!

They’ve played some popular Hill Country biker bar venues, includ-ing Shade Tree Saloon (Canyon Lake). They tour all over the Hill Country and beyond. Check out their website for the latest schedule. Watch them to hit rallies soon, as they pick up more fans in the biker community.

For more information about Cameran and Guardrail Damage Ahead, visit their website CameranNelson.com. I know you’ll love them as much as I do – I’m now hooked!
