Thunderchild Crabapple Malus ‘Thunderchild’ Description: This popular ornamental tree is bathed in soft pink flowers in spring and dark purple foliage all season long. The clusters of fragrant flowers emerge from rose-colored flower buds all along the branches before the leaves open in mid-spring. This tree has a narrow upright habit of growth and will grow to be about 20’ tall at maturity, with a spread of 15’. The beautiful pointy leaves turn an outstanding dark red in the fall. The fruits are showy ruby red pomes carried in abundance from early to mid-fall, which can be messy if allowed to drop on the lawn or walkways. The rough brown bark is not particularly interesting. Habitat: This tree needs well-drained soil and full sun. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. Adaptable to a variety of soil types and pH. It disease resistant and is highly tolerant of urban pollution and harsh city environments. Fun Facts: It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more.
