MMMM - Overview

Minerals and Metals are the most valuable natural resource base of the county. They play a crucial

role in the different activities of our economy as well as in our day-to-day life. Minerals and Metals

constitute most vital raw material base for many basic industries and hence are major resources

for economic development.

After independence, India was largely dependent on imports especially in the non-ferrous metal

sector. However, the situation has changed significantly ever since and India is now the 4th largest

producer of crude steel and expected to become the 2nd largest producer by 2015, India is also the

largest producer of DRI.

More over India is the 4th largest producer of Bauxite in the world. The growth of mineral and

metal sector is also linked to infrastructure related materials. The Indian steel sector contributes

to around 2% in the overall GDP of our economy. The mining sector's share in our GDP is around

2.4%. In the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017) India is expected to spend over one trillion US dollar

on the growth and development of infrastructure. This sector alongwith other sectors like

Petroleum, Defence and Space will have a large need for the different ferrous and non-ferrous

metals. Sustained growth in India's automotive sector has been driving demand for steel and

Aluminium. India accounted for 7.1 percent of the metals and mining industry in the

Asia – Pacific region.

In India 80% of mining is in the coal sector and the remaining 20% is in various metals and other

raw materials such as Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Lead, Zinc, Manganese, Uranium, Gold,

Rare-Earth and non-metallic minerals etc.
