  • FRIday workshops4:00PM Permaculture zone one: The home garden and the ethics of permacultureThis episode features a 15 minute garden tour with Chelsea Coy in the home garden right here at the Earthwork Farm, followed by a 30 minute discussion with Natalie Lindsay in her Zone 1 home garden. 5:00PM Celine Smith – Cultural HumilityMany have heard of cultural competency, but find out why that term is outdated. How can we remain curious and not claim to be experts on a culture. We will also explore examples of various cultures view certain concepts differently and the cultural iceberg.

6:00PM Rachel Marco-Havens: Allies and AccomplicesThis Workshop/Circle Discussion invites participants to explore the way we interpret, respond to and honor the asks of Indigenous Black and Brown People Of The Global Majority. As the sun slips behind the earth rising, we are left with the truth that, Indigenous, Black, Brown, LGBTQ and Societally Non-conforming folks will never be successfully retrofit into American communities, workspaces, systems or spaces that were designed for our extraction and erasure. We will have to build from the ground up. What might that look like? As more and more people step out into the fray, weare hearing words like “Ally” And “Accomplice” re-emerge. For many, the terms first came to the surface during the stand for #noDAPL and are now trending In the fight for BIPOC lives. This current trend re-awakens the question, ‘Will the allies still be there when the pepper spray comes out and what is it we really need‘. Rachel invites us to consider; What is an Ally? What is an accomplice? Are those terms befitting of what we need or how we are being supported? How can non-melanated people participate in the transition toward diversity and racial equity? Western culture strips us of our connection to the language we use and its implications on how we interpret the terminology—the visceral impact of American celebrity culture is showing in both performative activism and toxic apathy. This discussion takes a deep stab at these observations and seeks to identify patterns and mitigate the inadvertent abandonment of PGM on the frontlines of our struggles.

10:00AM Permaculture zone four: herb walk and reciprocity talkIn this episode we will join Sierra Bigham from Bear Earth Herbals for an herb walk and exploration that will dive a little deeper into how we can give back more to this Earth Mother and all the beings that support and nourish us. I hope together we can enhance our awareness and find more balance in our relationship with the natural world.

Reciprocity is the balance of life, giving and receiving. It is an honoring. Seeing and being seen. When we, as humans breathe, we are in reciprocity with the plant kingdom, especially the trees. While we are hyper aware of holding other humans responsible for outstanding debts, there seems to be a widening gap between our species and all the others who support us.

11:00AM Audra Kubat: from a spark to a songThis songwriting workshop will help writers take the spark of an idea and craft it into a working song. We will explore story development and editing techniques that can help your song find its own voice.

12:00PM “I’m not into politics“ with Kaitlyn Flynn of the Michigan league of conservation votersWe’re all familiar with the phrase, “I’m not into politics.” It can be hard to hear because whether or not folks are into politics, they impact our daily lives, and no election has ever been more critical than November 2020. Our land, air, water, and communities are depending on us to leave it all on the field this year. This workshop will be about how to engage with friends and loved ones who are not yet involved in this election and bring them into the movement to protect our planet.

4:00PM Help protect Iris from ICE with Sam Cooper and Gerardo ReyesSamantha Cooper and Gerardo Reyes will interview their friend Iris Freridge, who is facing deportation. Iris arrived in the U.S. in 2004 from El Salvador seeking her then husband, who she found had abandoned her and her son. While seeking safe haven in the U.S., she narrowly escaped the trafficking industry, but not without having what became a crucial residency document thrown out by a trafficker. The lack of that document in this current political climate initiated the steps leading up to ICE’s deportation order. After escaping in 2004, Iris moved to Michigan, got married to Derek Freridge - a U.S. citizen and had two U.S. born children in addition to her son Henry. Iris is a beloved volunteer at Circle Pines Center and a valued community member. ICE recently denied her family’s appeal to reopen her case, which has been pending since 01/19. Iris has an appointment at the Detroit ICE office on 09/24/20 and we’re asking people to peacefully assemble nearby (if needed) and donate to her Gofundme.

5:00PM Permaculture zones 0 + 5: the self and the wholeIn this live zoom workshop Elizabeth Wolff will open the space with a somatic practice and a discussion about caring for the Self.
