21. ACKNOWLEDGING CREATIVITY
A WISH TO FLY Chandan was a simple, religious villager. He loved watching birds flying in the sky. He wished to fly just like them. One fine day, Chandan went into the forest. He entered a cave and sat meditating Lord Indra’s name. Time passed into days, weeks and months. Twenty four years went by. But Chandan kept meditating. At last, Lord Indra was pleased. He appeared before Chandan and said, “Chandan, I am very pleased with your devotion. I will fulfil whatever wish you have.” Chandan had waited for this day for years. So he said, “ My Lord! If you are really pleased with my devotion, then kindly give me the power to fly up high in the sky like birds.” Lord Indra smiled and said, “Son, the Creator has not given humans the power to fly like birds. This is against the law of nature. This boon will not benefit you. Ask for something else.” But Chandan insisted on his wish. So Lord Indra said, “All right, I’ll grant your wish.” Then Lord Indra disappeared. Chandan went out of the cave. He spread his hands and waved them like a bird’s fluttering wings. To his surprise, he found himself flying up in the air. Chandan flew directly to meet the King in his palace. He thought the King would reward him. Then he flew down in the royal courtyard.
AECS - TURAMDIH Page 16
The King and all his ministers were surprised at the strange sight. Chandan told the King everything. The King was pleased. He took off his diamond necklace and asked Chandan to step forward to receive it. But as he stepped forward, the guards imprisoned him and put a chain around him and put him in the prison. The next day the King put a chain around Chanda’s neck and sat on his back. Then he ordered him to fly. Thus, Chandan became the King’s flying –man. He could not escape as he was always in chains surrounded by guards all the time. Chandan now regretted having obeyed Lord Indra’s advice. Till his death, he remained his flying pet. After that, no one ever dared to ask for flying skill of a bird as a wish fulfilment.
