HOPE ISBEING ABLE TO SEETHAT THERE IS

LIGHT DESPITEALL OF THE DARKNESS.

Inam has Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Her dream was to have her very own doll.

the Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to South african children and their families by offering the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness.

Since then, the Foundation discovered an interesting fact about life-threatening illnesses: a larger percentage of children survive than adults. We believe that one of the reasons for this is, that children simply have not learnt what life-threatening means; they live each day as it is given to them. For children attitude is everything, and they need all the encouragement they can get. Whatever the dream, no matter how big or small, it often gives the child hope and courage to carry on the fight. The fulfilment of these dreams inspires hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting fo .

Fulfilling dreams enables children to experience a fun aspect of life which they do not get to participate in due to their illness. The positive effect of the “dream come true” lingers, and children often respond better to their medication. These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, kidney failure, blood isorders and heart conditions.

The Reach For A Dream Foundation is a Non Profit Organisation and was founded on 7th July 1988. It is registered under Section 21of the Companies Act (Registration no. 91/06185/08) and under Section 18A of the Income Tax Act, 1962. Our NPO no. is 004-109 and our PBO no. is 18/11/13/1483.

PURPOSEOUR

There are countless children, and their families, in South Africa who are fatigued emotionally, physically and financially by a diagnosis of a life-threatening illnesses. Reach For A Dream seeks to alleviate the strain that such an illness takes.

Dream fulfillment distracts these children from the needles, medication and the hospital environment that they have sadly become accustomed to, and provides these children with the inner strength needed to fight their illnesses.

When a child is faced with a life-threatening illness, the impact that a dream coming true can have on their wellbeing is overwhelming. Doctors and parents report that after a dream is realised, children appear more uplifted, happier and are better able to cope. During desperate times, when there seems to be no hope, Reach For A Dream provides positivity and upliftment to these special children and their families.

Our primary purpose, embedded in our hearts and minds, is to continue to provide hope to children fightinglife-threatening illnesses. We achieve this through the fulfillment of their dreams

Confidence for a Lifetime.

The Queen for a Day initiative is a Reach For A Dream project that is designed to lift the spirits and build the confidence and self-esteem of little girls fighting life-threatening illnesses. Every little girl dreams of being a beauty queen. We treat the brave girls to a day of pampering and crown them Queen for a Day.

We show them that they are special and beautiful no matter what illness they suffer from or how the illness or medication affects their appearance. It allows them to escape the hospital environment and socialise with other brave girls.

Let the sunshine in

Camp Sunshine gives children the opportunity to forget about their worries and illness for a weekend and enjoy days of fun with friends who are in similar situations.

The weekend also involves a lot of team work where the emphasis is not on winning, but on working together to achieve the same goals. This is an essential aspect of Camp Sunshine as it draws children with similar medical challenges together and encourages them to build interactive relationships with others. This builds self-confidence as well as nurtures their ability to perform well in group settings as their social interaction is often restricted by their illness and treatment.

The time that the children spend at camp is truly transformational and leaves them with magical memories that will help them through the rough times.

Family time is priceless

From the moment a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, the dynamics within a family change. They are suddenly immersed in a world that revolves around hospitals, doctors and medical procedures.

A child’s illness prevents parents from engaging meaningfully with their other children. We have since realised how important it is to include a programme that allows parents, as well as siblings, the opportunity to engage with other families who are experiencing the same situation. This is done through a variety of activities including family camp and family special events.

Families have an opportunity to rebuild their relationships and meet other families facing similar challenges. The weekend provides a fantastic opportunity for each family to spend quality time together, where illnesses and worries are forgotten and new friendships made.

FAMILYIS NOT ANIMPORTANT THING, IT’S EVERYTHING.

Laughter is the best medicine

Laughter is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle or sneeze. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body and strengthens the immune system, boosts energy, diminishes pain and protects one from the damaging effects of stress.

More than just a respite from sadness and pain, laughter gives our children the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Our Jabulani entertainers are carefully trained to turn pain into chuckles. Using magic, balloons, juggling, unicycles and above all smiles, they visit hospital patients and entertain them. Our Jabulani entertainers are drawn from every sector of society and bring with them love and compassion.
