Still going strong after 12 years, the continued success of the David S. Ishii Foundation can

be credited to the generous support of sponsors, donors and, very importantly, a dedicated corps of volunteers.

In the absence of paid staff, the annual DSIF tournament, for example, relies on scores of volunteers who smoothly execute the hundreds of tasks—from check-in, refreshments, scoring, prizes and silent auction to the presentation of scholarships—required to stage what some consider to be one of the best fundraising golf tourna-ments in Hawaii.

It would be natural for people to assume that the bulk of the Founda-tion’s volunteers came to know David and Lorraine Ishii through the game of golf or, maybe, baseball….

A Word About Our NewsletterThrough the Green is the official newsletter of the David S. Ishii Foundation.

The USGA defines the phrase “through the green” as “the entire golf course, except for tees, greens and designated hazards.” In tournament play, the phrase is used to mean that everything else is “in play.”

Through the Green is the Foundation’s way of saying to Hawaii’s young golfers: pursue your goals, play it as it lies, and strive to be the best you can along the way...

Volunteering for Our YouthDavid S. Ishii

In this issue, I’m glad that we are able to say “thank you”—loudly

and clearly—to the Yawata family, our longtime friends and super supporters of the Foundation. By extension, we want to again express our thanks to all of the volunteers that have helped us along the way. Some of the key individuals are listed in the masthead to the imme-diate left of this column, including Tournament Director Elton Tanaka, whose dedication and hard work has kept the Foundation going for a dozen years now. More key volunteers are listed on page 3 of this newsletter.

For all of us, our motivation in supporting the Foundation is to help our youth. Guiding young people to become responsible adults through the game of golf has been the Foundation’s primary focus from the beginning.

Are we succeeding in our mis-sion? I like to think so. At the recently held Mid-Pac Open golf tournament, I played in a group that included high school aged players John Oda and Donny Hopoi. Not only are they very good golfers, but both have matured into very fine young men.

In fact, we now see young players par-ticipating in all of our tournaments—not just Junior Golf and HHSAA events, but in many of the mainstream tournaments as well, including the Hawaii State Amateur, Hawaii Pearl Open, Manoa Cup and Ha-waii State Open, amongst others. Hawaii golfers also represent the islands well as

they compete at the collegiate level, here and on the mainland. And, we see junior golfers participate in the Sony Open in Hawaii and on the LPGA Tour as well.

Golf is a way to shape the character and values of our young people, whether or not they pursue the game on a competitive level as adults.

I’m proud of many of our young players and I hope you will stick with us as we try to make difference the lives of others still on their way up.

The DSIF Yasuko Asada Memorial College Scholarship Awards were

presented at the 11th Annual DSIF Golf Tournament held on June 16, 2011, at the Pearl Country Cub.

Starting in 2011, the foundation began granting two scholarships (one boy and one girl) valued at $4,000 each. Checks of $1,000 will be made payable to the awardee and his/her school each year that the recipient attends for a total of four years. Verification of student status will be required each year. This year’s winners are:

Justin T. Uegawa (Kapaa High School)attending: Willamette University

Catherine Kim (Kalani High School)attending: Stevens Institute of Technology

The DSIF scholarship program is dedicated to the memory of longtime friend and supporter, Ms. Yasuko Asada. The awards are intended to encourage the pursuit of higher educational by members of high school golf teams in Hawaii who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement.

Moanalua sophomore Eimi Koga overcame tough competition and extremely blustery winds to capture

the girls individual title at the 2011 David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Girls Golf Championship at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course on the Big Island of Hawaii last May.

Koga, a two-time Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) title holder, was tied with defending state champion Cassy Is-agawa, a senior at Baldwin High School on Maui, as they reached the final hole of the tournament. Koga made par while Isagawa bogeyed the hole to finish in a tie for second with Iolani junior Marissa Chow.

Wind gusts upwards of 35 mph “felt like 100” according to a number of the players, placing a premium on solid ball-striking and mental toughness under adverse conditions.

Punahou senior Alina Ching finished fourth and led her team to its fifth consecutive team title. Ching’s score, along with those of Kacie Komoto, Cyd Okino and Michelle Condry, combined for a team total of 458—nine strokes better than Waiakea and 10 ahead of Baldwin.

The scenario was reversed the following week at the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf Championship, also held at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. Iolani junior Lorens Chan took the boys individual title handily, while the team competition went down to the wire.

Chan, two-time Hawaii State Amateur champion, set a torrid pace with an opening round of 6-under-par 66, followed by a 67 on the final day to win by four shots over Moanalua’s Tyler Ota and Punahou’s Kalena Preus.

The boys team title, on the other hand, was not decided until the final group putted out on the final green. Punahou was locked in a nip-and-tuck battle with both Moanalua and Iolani until Preus

Sportsmanship and comraderie reign amongst competitors at the boys event.

David congratulates the top individual girls finishers.

four other youngsters in comprising Pearl Country Club’s inaugural junior golf class taught by Beau Yokomoto and Clark Miyazaki.

Meanwhile, Chad and Colan became fast friends, as did the entire Yawata and Ishii ohanas. “They did so much for us,” Mabel Yawata explains. “We go to their house, the kids sleep over, or we go out to dinner…” The families have shared trips together, traveling to the Neighbor Is-lands, Japan, and even a very memorable trip to Scotland when David was invited to play in the Senior British Open at Turnberry. “He has literally shown us a different side of the world,” Randy says.

Lorraine has a special category for the Yawatas, call-ing them “Super Volunteers” who can always be counted on to step up and do whatever needs to be done, whether it is picking up prizes; preparing goodie bags; or folding, stuffing and collating mailouts.

“It’s a good thing I have a van,” Randy says, laughing. “We’re blue-collar volunteers—manual labor. Lorraine and David can rely on us, no matter what it is or what time. We do stuff like pick up water, soda and beer for the tourna-ment. On the morning of tournament, we go to their house to pick up the prizes and deliver them to the course, then we stay and set-up the tents... stuff like that.”

Continued from Page 1

The Yawatas...

Outside of golf, the families can laugh in recalling the time Chad had to answer a cry for help to catch toads that had invaded the Ishii’s backyard, or the time that Chad and Kyle had to rescue Colan when he almost fell into Pearl Harbor when they were teaching him how to ride a bike

Today, Kyle stays busy coaching various sports, includ-ing volleyball, basketball, baseball and flag football. Chad says he is “retired” from golf, but is often called upon to caddy for David. He likes it a lot better than playing. “I can’t hit it straight, so at least I can watch the ball go straight,” he quips. Chad’s “coaching,” he says, is limited to teaching Colan how to eat. After all, isn’t that what families do?

Mabel Yawata (second from left) joins other volunteers in hand-ing out snacks and bentos at the 2011 DSIF tournament.
