  • HOW WE WORK

1001 MILES of CONNECTION 1001 MILES of CONNECTION

T he Abraham Pa th i s a long-distance walking trail across the Middle East. The path retraces the journey of Abraham, the legendary an-cestor of over half of human-ity, who is known for hospi-tality and kindness toward strangers.

    #1 BEST NEW TRAIL

The Abraham Path is one of the most innovative socioec-onomic change projects in the Middle East.

The path responds to major challeng-es across the region by boosting com-munity development, empowering youth and women, and transforming small villages into hubs of hospitality, cultural pride and economic activity.

The Abraham Path shines a light on the natural beauty, warm hospitality and vibrant cultures of the Middle East.

    150 COMMUNITIESconnected

By 2017, the path will include 150 communities across five countries that will provide lodging, meals and guid-ing services for walkers.

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Local community organizations and businesses are creating specific seg-ments of the path. API provides them with direct grants and technical ex-pertise.

    RESULTS: GLOBAL AND LOCAL IMPACT

Over the period 2015-2017, we can bring the Abraham Path project to scale:

    1,000 MILES OF WALKING TRAIL

By 2017, the longest continuous sec-tion of path will be 1,000 miles (1,600 km) and 100 day stages.

    CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

The path literally connects people and cultures over time and space. API in-vests in trail development across the region and grows abrahampath.org as a platform for sustainable tourism.

    5,000 WALKERS ANNUALLY

By 2017, 5,000 people will be walk-ing the path annually; this will rise to 25,000 by 2025.

    ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY

The path creates new social and economic opportunities. API and its partners provide training for guides, hosts and local service providers. The World Bank sponsors research on the economic opportunities of the path: worldbank.abrahampath.org

why now?In a region that is synony-mous with conflict and im-possible, there has never been a better time for a path of hope, a project creating 1001 miles of connection.

We are presently experiencing a pe-riod of opportunity that seldom aris-es for small, innovative projects: the critical infrastructure of a real path, engaged communities, and local part-ners is in place; a committed global board has stepped up its investment; and we have third-party endorse-ments and support from two of the most credible institutions in economic development (World Bank) and cultur-al heritage (National Geographic).

SustainabilitySustainability lies at the heart of the 3-year campaign, ensuring that trave-lers will be walking the path for many generations to come. The path serves as a platform for environmental pro-tection and socioeconomic change. API shares trail development skills with local partners across the Middle East. Income generated by travelers goes directly to the communities and local service providers. API also lev-erages institutional funding, which di-rectly finances partners in the region.

    Ben Lerwill, National Geographic Traveller

This sense of immersion is what makes the Abraham Path project so

extraordinary - it gives travellers the chance to shape their own

    perspective.

    WHY THE ABRAHAM PATH?

INVEST IN THE ABRAHAM PATH 2015-2017The development of the Abra-ham Path is funded through the generous contributions of individuals and foundations from over 20 countries around the world. To take the project to scale, the 1001 Miles of Connection campaign aims to raise US$7.5 million in private and institutional support over the period 2015-2017. This campaign will deepen the impact of the Abraham Path and ensure its sustainable fu-ture.
