    The Betrayal of Set

    In ancient Egyptian mythology, the GodSet was a very powerful god. He can be

    easily identified on wall paintings by his

    long snout (nose). He was the god of

    storms and the desert. He was also a

    brother of the wise ing !siris.

    Set was "ealous of his brother !siris

    and wanted to become the ing ofEgypt. So, he plotted to ill !siris with

    a trap# Set made a beautiful bo$ and

    brought it to a feast. Set told

    everybody at the feast that whoever

    could fit into the bo$ perfectly could

    have the bo$ as a gift. However, Set

    made the bo$ so that it would only

    perfectly fit his brother !siris.

    !siris saw the beautiful bo$ and

    wanted to have it, so he got into the

    bo$ and it fit him perfectly. He smiled

    and said, %&he bo$ is mine'%

    t that moment, Set put the lid on the

    bo$ and loced it shut. He too the bo$

    away and threw it in the river. !siris,who was trapped in the bo$, died and

    Set became the ing of Egypt.

    Isis and Osiris: the First Mummy

    &wo of the most important ancient

    Egyptian gods were Isis and !siris.

    !siris was a wise ing of Egypt and Isis

    was his wife.

    *hen !siriss brother Set illed

    !siris, cut up his body into / pieces

    and threw the pieces into the 6ile7iver, Isis wept. In some stories, the

    tears of Isis cause the flooding of the

    6ile 7iver, which brings the water and

    soil needed for growing crops.

    Isis searched far and wide to retrieve

    the pieces of her dead husband !siris.

    &he crocodiles left the pieces alone

    because they respected Isis. nd so,

    after a long search, Isis was able to

    find all of the pieces e$cept for one,

    which was eaten by a fish.

    Isis sewed the pieces together and

    wrapped them in bandages. &hen she

    used a spell to bring him bac to life.

    nd so, !siris became the first mummyand his coming bac to life, represents

    the "ourney to the afterlife.

    8ater, !siris became the god of the

    dead. He is often depicted with green

    sin (the color of rebirth) and his lower

    body wrapped in white bandages (lie a

    mummy).

    The Revenge of Horus

    Horus was the ancient Egyptian god of

    the sy. Sometimes he appears as a

    falcon and sometimes he appears as a

    person with the head of a falcon. (

    falcon is a fast hunting bird that loos

    eye was the sun and his left eye was

    the moon. s he flew across the sy,

    the sun and moon moved overhead. !ne

    was never as bright again.
