    Chapter 6 Summary (pp 31-39)

    Hard Way Home

    1. Greg stayed in the city of Rawalpandi and got the cheapest room possible. He d need to get everything

    necessary, the materials to build a school.

    2. Greg metAbdul Shah, the hotel watchman and told him that he will build a school.

    3.

    Abdul offered to help Greg and said that they will bargain for the materials very well.4. Greg and Abdul bought everything they need such as lumber, cement, nails, hammers, saws, axes, shovels, and

    sheets of tin for the roof.

    When store owners ask for high prices, Abdul argued with them, told them that the supplied were for a school

    being built as an act of charity.

    5. Greg and Abdul went to a tailor to get two new sets of shalwar kamizwhen the old shirt Greg was wearing

    ripped from collar to hem.

    6. Greg and Abdul went to the bazaar where all the supplied Greg had bought

    would be packed onto a truck, ready to drive to Korphe. A crowd gathered to see the astonishing sight- a tall

    foreign man in a new shalwar kamiz that was already dirty and dusty, collecting supplied for a school for

    Pakistani children.

    7. Greg said good-bye to Abdul and climbed onto the truck and waved. Abdul

    said a prayer for his safe journey.

    8. His journey was very dangerous. The climate was very cold as they truck is climbing a mountain. (p. 34)

    9. Greg arrived in Skardu and met Mohammed Ali Changazi. Changazi made a living organizing tours and

    mountain-climbing expeditions, getting people supplies and workers they needed.

    10.Changazi said that it was too late to build the school but he still agreed to let Greg unload the truck and store

    the supplies in his courtyard.

    11.

    Greg cleaned up and slept in Changazis office. The next morning, he met Akhmalu, the man who had cooked

    for his K2 expedition.

    12.Akhmalu told Greg that there is a jeep waiting for them to go to Khane village. Greg agreed to go because the

    village people prepared food and he knew that the Balti people did not have much food. Changazi went with

    them as well.

    13.In Khane, Greg was welcomed into the home of another old acquaintance, Janjungpa, a porter from his

    expedition to K2.

    14.Janjungpa spoke to thank Greg for honoring them and coming to build a school for Khane. Greg was shocked

    because he did not promise to build them a school.

    15.Akhmalu and Greg left and he stayed in Akhmalus house for the night. The next morning, Greg insisted that

    Chagazi get him back to Skardu before the arguments could begin all over again. Chagazi agreed and promised

    to take Greg to the place where the supplies for the school were stored.

    16.Changazi brought Greg to his home village called Kuardu. There was a huge feast prepared for him. Greg was

    wondering why he was brought there.

    17.Changazi presented Greg to the village elders and said that they have already agreed that the school will be

    built in the village before winter. Greg was so angry that he ran outside and cried.

    18.When Greg finally stopped crying, he looked up to see several children. Greg introduced himself to them and

    spoke using the Balti language. Greg taught them English words.

    19.Changazi tried to talk to Greg about building the school in his village but Greg demanded that Changazi take

    him to Korphe.

    Chapter 9 Summary (pp 48-54)

    Hunting Ibex

    1. Greg got another ten thousand dollars from Jean Hoerni. Hoerni wanted him to send a photo of the school once it

    is finished.2. June 1995, Greg was back in Pakistan. He bought all the materials needed to build a bridge and had asked the

    seller to deliver it to Korphe.

    3. Greg had to walk to Korphe because it was raining hard and the jeep driver refused to continue on the muddy

    road from Askole to Korphe.

    4. Sakina took Gregs hand in welcome. He realized that it was the first time a Balti woman had touched him. It is

    against the tradition for a woman among the Balti to touch a man who isn t related to her, even to shake hands.

    Greg was becoming like family.

    5. Greg went into the kitchen and Sakina was shocked. Greg filled a pot with tea leaves and water, added a few

    sticks of kindling to the fire, and put the tea on to boil.

    6. Haji Ali told everyone gathering in the house that two jeeps carrying the cable for the bridge had been stopped

    by a rockslide about eighteen miles away from Korphe. He suggested that every man in village carry the cale to

    Korphe so that work on the bridge could begin at once.

    Activity: Draw the Ibex hunt.

    Chapter 10 Summary (pp 55-59)

    Building Bridges

    1.

    The women took care of the crops in the fields as the men worked on the bridge.2. Description of the warm summer months in Korphe. What do the people live during these days? (p. 55)

    3. Greg met George McCown, the board director of the American Himalayan Foundation. AHF had sent him a

    birthday card and Greg had to give it to McCown. It was McCowns 60thbirthday.

    4. Greg gave McCown a roll of rupees and asked him to pay everybody the money they were owed for their work

    on the bridge.

    5. In late August 1995, ten weeks after they had started, the bridge was completed. Haji Ali offered Greg the last

    piece of wood and asked him to lay it in place. But Greg insisted that Korphes chief complete Korphes bridge.

    6. Haji Ali raised the plank high over his head and thanked Allah for the foreigner he d been kind enough to send

    to this village. The women and children of Korphe should their approval.

    7.

    Greg prepared to head back to California, where he would spend the winter and spring earning enough money

    to return to start building the school at last.

    8. Hussein had offered to donate a field that his wife, Hawa owned. The school could be built there. It had a clear

    view of the mountain called Korphe 2, which Greg thought would encourage students to aim high.

    9. Greg wanted Hussein to become the schools first teacher.

    10.Greg left Haji Ali enough money to hire workers from nearby villages to cut stone and carry it on to Korphe.

    They should be able to lay a foundation, or base, for the school before Greg came back.
