The Chef’s Table
The Home and Community Care Program has for several years offered a
Meals on Wheels program. The purpose of the meals on wheels is:
To provide meal recipients with social contact
Help to re-stimulate an interest in meals and regularizing meal time Help recipients to develop an acceptance of meals on wheels program and by extension, of other support services where required.
The target population are Community Home Care Clients who are deemed
to need this service after having an assessment by the Community Home
Care nurses. The program aims to provide each client 2 meals per week. The
meals are supplied by the Williams Lake BC meals on Wheels program based
out of the Cariboo Memorial Hospital.
Three Corners recently had the opportunity to meet with Vantage
Living’s president Melanie Reinhardt. Vantage Living is the company that
owns the new long term care facility across from the Kiwanis Park –
Cariboo Place.
We have conducted a couple of satisfaction audits on our meals and the
results indicate that they may fall short in the area of taste and
presentation. In an effort to be community driven, we approached
Vantage Living with a request to provide meals on wheels for our
communities in the hope of improving on the taste and presentation.
I have heard great feedback about the meals at Cariboo Place and
thought we should arrange a tasting. On July 3rd a group of TCHSS nurses
were hosted by Debbie Hyette, Vantage Living Food Services Supervisor.
We had a tasting of the breaded Tilapia, baked potato and mixed vegetables. We all agreed that it was delicious.
The fish was mild, with a crunchy flakey breading, the baked potato, creamy, served with butter, sour cream and
green onions, and the mixed vegetables were firm, not hard, not soggy. Overall the meal was not overly spiced,
and the flavors were not artificial. As a group we were pleased with the presentation, and are
hoping that the meals will be better received.
We will be starting with our new provider August 1st, and will be providing an alternate dinner entre/ lighter
lunch entre for 3 meals/ week. On the weeks that there is a holiday Monday, we will be adjusting the next day
pick up to still provide 3 meals per week. There is also an option to be able to provide different textures of food,
so if someone has difficulty chewing or swallowing, we can accommodate that. Please speak with Darlene
Shawara, HCC LPN if you have questions, suggestions
