~ For those of you who are not able to visit the Needlework Gallery and for those of you who were not able to attend

the Embroiderers Guild Conference that was held in

Auckland at the end of July last year, you may not know

that not long before that time Olwyn Horwood granted me

the rights to publish her design that she created for a class

that she taught at the Sampler Gathering at Taupo in 2011.

This beautiful piece was inspired by an antique sampler.

Olwyn chose different elements that were in this large

sampler and reduced them to created a smaller sampler for

us to stitch. To the right is a photo of this gorgeous sampler

with Olwyn standing underneath it, plus an image of the

delicate design.

Many of you will know that one of my favourite colours is green.

It is also a favourite colour of one of my lovely customers who lives

in Hamilton - Fiona Jones - and she chose ‘Green With Envy’ for

last year’s Mystery Samper project - Family Quaker Sampler.

The following fabrics have been available for many years, but it is only now that I have decided to purchase a small quantity for the Gallery.

The following are not needlework related products - but it is lovely to send pretty cards through the mailbox to someone special to remember their special day or

let them know that you are thinking of them if they are experiencing some hardship. These cards are from Carol’s Rose Garden and there are 10 mini cards in a

pack and the pattern on each is beautifully embossed. So too, the envelope flap. $15.00 per pack.

Designs: The following designs from Judy of JBW Designs were released early in 2016. Something for everyone - an alphabet sampler, a little girl’s bedroom,

a reminder of winter, a baby announcement, a little fella’s bedroom and a pocket for a tooth ready for collection by the tooth fairy.

and needle in one’s hands soothes, refreshens and calms the soul. $18.50

Just CrossStitch - February 2017: The biggest change to this magazine with this

issue is that all needlework charts are now printed in colour. There are a couple of

other changes to the magazine that were introduced last year, and these are to

continue. They are -

Designer Q& A - information about designers

The Sampler Sleuth - for those who enjoy historical samplers there are to be reproduction samplers : serialized over several

issues of the magazine. The charts are to be presented in a way that part of the chart can be stitched and displayed as its own

design, or can be stitched part by part until the whole sampler is complete as one. The first part of three parts of Susanna

Rambo’s 1836 sampler is in this issue. $18.50

Designs: In June of last year, one of our favourite designers - Ellen Chester of With My Needle - released some new designs.

The following descriptions are as written by Ellen -

WMN : AMIDST - Amidst the Crowd: My design was inspired by Mary Ann Green’s lovely sampler, which is part of my collection. Mary Ann stitched her

sampler in 1838, and I’ve included a small photo of her sampler with the directions. My design borrows heavily from Mary Ann, but there are also quite a few

changes to the design and colours. Therefore, this is not a true reproduction, but rather an

historical adaptation of Mary Ann’s lovely sampler. Detailed stitching directions, charts and

stitch diagrams are on 13 pages, plus there is a cover page and the sampler photo. Stitches

used are Backstitch & Cross Stitch over two threads, fabric is 36 count Antique Ivory Linen and

the stitch count is 222 wide x 318 high. $40.00

WMN : GIFT - A Gift From Heaven: I designed these two samplers to commemorate the births

of my twin granddaughters, Katie (Kathryn) and Norah. I wanted each girl to have their own

sampler that would be slightly different from her sister’s, but I wanted them to co-ordinate. The

thread colours on both samplers are the same, but I changed the colours of some of the flowers

on the border so that there would be a subtle difference between the two samplers. I also

changed the positions of the bees, ladybugs, small flowers and butterflies. The most noticeable

difference is that the pictorial scenes on the samplers are mirror images. I’ve included charts

for both samplers in the package. Detailed stitching directions, charts and stitch diagrams are

on 7 pages, plus there is a cover page. Stitches used are Backstitch, closed Herringbone,

Cross Stitch, Cross Stitch over one thread, Satin, Smyrna Cross & Tent Stitch. Silk threads are by Needlepoint, Inc. and Simply Wool from The Gentle Art,

fabric is 36 count Antique Ivory Linen by Zweigart and the stitch count for each design is 159 wide x 80 high. $32.50

are my first two offerings in a series I call, Sentiments. These little designs look wonderful framed, but they

would also be beautiful on the top of boxes or made into mini pillows or perhaps a pincushion. Charts for both

designs, detailed stitching directions and stitch diagrams are on 4 pages plus a cover with a photo are included

in the package. Stitches used are Backstitch, Cross Stitch, Cross Stitch over one thread, Satin and Smyrna

Cross. Silk threads are by Needlepoint, Inc. and the fabric is 36 count Marine White Linen by Lakeside Linens

& Designs, Inc. Stitch count for each design is 73 wide x 73 high. $32.50
