FEATURE Sealing Technology December 2006 PATENTS 14 Applicant: Tenaris Connections AG, Switzerland A further variation of the thread- ed joint for oil and gas pipes is described. It creates a metal- to-metal seal externally to the female thread. The joint has an extension of the box beyond the seal, which produces an elastic tightening band effect on the seal so that excessive interference on the seal is not necessary. This facilitates correct assembly of the joint. Patent number: WO 2006/087361 Inventors: G.E. Carcagno and M. Morotti Publication date: 24 August 2006 Threaded joint for pipes provided with seal Mechanical pump seal Applicant/Inventor: S.E. Yandle II (USA) This patent describes a rotary shaft mechanical seal that is claimed to have two advantages. The position of the floating com- ponent O-ring can be moved to avoid running on a section of shaft where fretting has occurred; and the design uses standard size O-rings. Patent number: WO 2006/089289 Publication date: 24 August 2006 Editor’s comment: A quick check with a major global seal supplier confirmed my immediate reaction to this patent. They use standard size O-rings unless it is absolutely neces- sary to do otherwise – it would not make financial or logistical sense to do otherwise. Seal ring Applicant: Daikin Industries Ltd, Japan An elastomer seal, such as an O-ring, is described which has a non-sticking material layer on the process facing side of the seal. This is intended to provide chemical and plasma resis- tance. The atmospheric side of the seal has a notch around the entire circumference. This is presumably to provide some added flexibility, but no information is provided. Patent number: WO 2006/088076 Inventors: Y. Sakamoto and T. Noguchi Publication date: 24 August 2006 Sleeve for pre-assembly of flat gasket Applicant: ElringKlinger AG, Germany The purpose of this invention is to achieve the object of even further simplifying the pre-assembly of a flat gasket on a machine compo- nent. This is required, in particular, for secondary gaskets for internal combustion engines, for example intake or exhaust manifold gaskets. The sleeve is designed to assist with locking the gasket in position dur- ing assembly. Patent number: WO 2006/089604 Inventors: W. Kullen et al. Publication date: 31 August 2006 Toothed seal ring for pipe joining Applicant/Inventor: F. Rivoli (Italy) A push-fit joint for plastic pipe is described in this patent that is intended to provide a more positive location. The male and female parts of the connection have sawtooth profiles facing in opposite directions to create a strong retaining grip. Patent number: WO 2006/090277 Publication date: 31 August 2006 Method and apparatus for producing fireproof seal Applicant: Gluske GmbH, Germany This patent describes the fixing and sealing of tiles used for either functional or decorative purposes. The tiles may be manufactured from a variety of materials includ- ing ceramic, wood, stone, metal and rubber. Patent number: WO 2006/089712 Inventors: S. Ma and L. Lutzner Publication date: 31 August 2006 The threaded pipe joint described in WO 2006/087361, which has an elastic tightening band external to the thread to provide a tightening effect on the joint without excessive interference. The O-ring-like seal described in WO 2006/088076 has a protective non-stick layer facing the process side and a circumferential notch on the atmospheric side. Multilayer steel gasket with nitrided metal layer Applicant: Dana Corporation, USA In this patent a multi-layer steel gasket is produced by cold rolling and nitriding an active layer. The cold rolling provides the hardness required, and the nitriding adds strength to resist cracking and wear. Patent number: WO 2006/090310 Inventor: F. Popielas Publication date: 31 August 2006 Seal for dispensing apparatus Applicant: Bespak Plc, UK This patent describes a polyolefin thermoplastic elastomer seal materi- al for application in the aerosol dis- pensers and other components used for used for pharmaceutical applica- tions. The material is designed to provide the required material prop- erties and fluid resistance, plus com- pliance with regulatory requirements for pharmaceutical applications. A particular benefit of the material is the low level of extractables in the compound, and stable properties after the extraction of leachable components of the compound. The extraction process is claimed to be quicker and more cost-effective than that required for conventional elas- tomers, with a much reduced effect on final material properties.
