Applications on thetest stand ...
Threaded inserts from KerbKonus aremanufactured in large piece numbers.Human lives and safety can oftendepend upon these tiny components, for instance in the case of airbag receiving fasteners.
Because we bear this heavy responsibi-lity, our products are tested and moni-tored in line with the most stringentdirectives. In the case of particularlycritical applications, each and everypart is exhaustively tested on state-of-the-art test equipment before it is deli-vered to you.
The loading capacity of a thread de-pends primarily on the surface shell ofthe component which is exposed toshearing stress. By selecting just the right threaded in -sert for each application, maximumreliability can be achieved.
Using tried and tested, practicallyorien ted test methods (see the tablebelow), we provide the designer with aset of reliable specifications to ensuresafe, reliable compliance with anyappl ication requirement, however un -usual. In most cases, this can even beachieved using standard threadedinserts.

The Ensat® self-tapping threadedinsert ...
Ensat® is a self-tapping threaded in -sert with external and internal threads, cutting slots or cutting bores.
A continuous process of further deve-lopment has brought about a numberof major improvements to product cha-racteristics. These inserts are protectedby German and also foreign patents. The Ensat is screwed into a pre-formedor pre-drilled receiving hole and soautomatically taps its own thread intothe hole wall. This ensures a backlash-free fit with extreme loading capacity.
Ensat®-3F 305 is a thread forminginsert with 3 longitudinal groovesaround its periphery
The Ensat is used throughout thewhole of the metal and plastics pro-cessing industry.
Automotive industryA wide range of supply parts such aswing mirrors, engines, transmissions
Household appliance and officemachinery productionVacuum cleaners, cameras, sun lamps, drills etc.
Electrical and laboratory suppliesCapacitors, radio and telecommunica-tion systems, dental technology equip-ment.

• Universal application for all types of plastic, thermoset plastics, thermosetplastics, PU/PUR foam, fibreglass reinforced plastics, for hardwood andplywood, hard paper and metal.
• Maximum strength values in compa-rison to other systems. The diagram illustrates the withdrawing force in thermoplastic materials: In thermosetplastics and glass fibre reinforced plastics, the values tend to be higher.
• Thin-walled Ensat for restricted spaceconditions (residual wall thickness-es), and also suitable for screwing in using a thread tapping machine (same inside and outside pitch).

Installation recommendation Example
Female thread M8, recommendedborehole diameter for
Ensat®-S 302: 10,9 to 11,2 mmEnsat®-SB 307/308: 11,1 to 11,3 mm(see Works Standard sheets)
In case of processing problems (e.g.extreme screw-in torque levels), it isgenerally of no consequence to choose the next highest column forthe diameter data. In case of doubt, itis worth testing this.
The Ensat should be processed appr.0,1 - 0,2 mm recessed. After proces-sing, the Ensat can be immediatelysubjected to load. If the componentmaterial permits subsidence of theEnsat under load, the Ensat can onlyexecute an axial movement of 0,1 to0,2 mm. In other words, the preten-sion of the screw union is largely re-tained, loosening of the screw con-nection under dynamic load is impe-ded.

Design of moulded part andreceiving hole
Guideline values for countersink:N = (0,06 to 0,08 x E) +E
Material thickness:Smallest admissible material thickness ≥ length of the Ensat.
Depth of the blind hole T:see Works Standard sheets, page 8 to 27
Retaining hole
The receiving hole can be simplydrilled or already provided forin the casting.
Countersinking the borehole is recommended in order to:
- Prevent the workpiece surface frombeing raised
- Permit screwing in to a greater depth- Ensure improved initial cutting
characteristics
Borehole diameterBrittle, tough and hard materials callfor a larger borehole than soft or elasticmaterials. For guideline values, seethe table above.
Edge distanceThe smallest still admissible edgedistance depends on the plannedstress level and the elasticity of thematerial into which the Ensat isscrewed.Guideline values for plastic:W ≥ 0,25 to 0,9 E
In moulded parts made of glass fibrereinforced plastic, a high pull-out resi -stance is reached if the casting skin isremoved in the receiving hole by drillingopen.
Avoid any tilting between the Ensatand the screw – under the head or inthe thread. For this reason, in the caseof adjusting screws the Ensat is drivenin to a depth of >=1 mm. Studs mustbe fixed against the floor surface ofthe blind hole.

Machine installation ...
1. Precisely position the workpiece to ensure that the hole and machine spindle are in exact alignment (do not tilt). Set the machine to the pre-cise driving depth (appr. 0,1 – 0,2 mm below the surface of the workpiece).
2. Turn the machine to clockwise rota-tion. At the start of the driving pro-cess, the rotatable external shell of the tool must be resting against theexternal visible stop pins in such a way that it is driven by the pins in the clockwise direction.
3. Feed the Ensat towards the tool (slot or cutting bore facing downwards) and grip for the duration of 2 to 4 revolutions.
4. Actuate the operating lever of the machine until the Ensat cuts into the borehole. The remainder of the driving process takes place without actuating the feed.
5. Switch on the reversing function. Always avoid setting the tool down hard on the workpiece, as this can lead breaking of both the tool and the Ensat. Excessively hard contact of the tool can damage the play-free fit of the Ensat and so reduce the pull-out strength. If necessary, the driving speed may have to be adapted in line with the necessary reversal time.
Machine driving process
Torque MThe maximum admissible torquedepends on:1. The axial load capacity of the tool
stud2. The pressure resistance capacity of
the Ensat in the axial direction.

Application
The threaded insert Ensat-S/SIwith cutting slot is a self-tap-ping fastener for the creation ofwear-free, vibration resistantscrew joints with high loadingcapacity in materials with lowshearing strength. It is suitable for installation inthe following materials:- Aluminium and aluminium alloys
- Magnesium alloys- Cast iron, brass, bronze- Duroplastics, thermoplastics(with the exception of rubber-softthermoplastics < 100 Shore A)
Ensat-SI
The Ensat is inserted via the hexagonal socket, permitting theachievement of short installationtimes.Other benefits: More simple drivingtools and machines which requireonly clockwise rotation.
The Ensat can be extracted withoutproblems before the recycling pro-cess, resulting in lower costs.

B-Lok®self-locking threaded insert
The B-Lok is a threaded insert with dif-ferent external profiles, which guaran-tee optimum anchorage in all types ofmoulded plastic components
B-Lok® *)Registered Trademark *) protected by numerous national
and international patents.
• Unbeatably short installation times• Screw is secured automatically
against loosening• Cost savings for locking elements
Product features 1. The B-Lok is pressed into the receiving hole, during which processthe segments bend inwards.
2. When inserting the screw, the seg-ments resume their original shape, in which process the external profilebecomes anchored in the hole wall. The residual tension acts to lock thescrew in place.
In the case of small-scale series, the B-Lok is embedded with a simplemanual levering device (possibly asmall press or drill at a standstill).
For large series: Single or multipleinstallation machines on request.
Installation
Design of the moulded com-ponent and receiving hole
The part requiring fastening should beflush with the threaded insert, see (1).For this reason, the borehole (2)should be closely dimensioned and not
The screw length must be selectedso that the B-Lok is completely expan-ded.
Hole diameter and wall thicknessesare dependent on the material usedfor the formed part. Please enquire orascertain by testing. For guideline
For B-Lok, we recommend the smallestpossible hole diameter in which it isstill possible to reliably insert thescrew. Although a larger hole meansthat the screw is less stiff running, atthe same time reduces pull-out resi-stance and torque safety.
Hole depth. This should be overdi-mensioned if possible. The screw mustnot under any circumstances come torest at the bottom of the hole, see (3).

S-Lok®–threaded insert andstud ...The S-Lok is a threaded insert / studwith a graduated opposing herringbo-ne knurl on the outside and a pilotend for problem-free insertion.
Its unique shape has been tailored tothe requirements of the material andwas developed especially for insertioninto plastic components by means ofultrasonic vibration or heat transfer.
Well-known manufacturers of ultraso-nic welding machines recommend S-Lok due to the low energy require-ment, the short insertion time and theproblem-free production.
For all moulded parts made of thermo-set plastics.
Field of application
• Also suitable for thin-wall thicknes-ses, elimination of material tension.
• The firm seating is largely insensitive to borehole tolerances and material shrinkage.
Product features
Inserts are installed by means of ultra-sonic or heat transfer. This causes theplastic to soften so that it flows intothe knurl profile of the S-Lok. On subsequent cooling, a firm seat isobtained which is capable of withstan-ding high loads.
The pull-out resistance is generally higher than is the case with moulded-in components, and depends on theplastic, the size of the receiving hole, the wall thickness, the edge distanceand the correct setting of the installa-tion equipment.
Installation machine on request.
InstallationDesign of the moulded com-ponent and receiving hole
Hole diameter (L) and wall thicknes-ses (W) are dependent on the materialused for the formed part, the insertionmethod and the requirements imposedon pull-out resistance / torque safety. Please inquire or ascertain by testing. For guideline values, see the worksstandard sheets.
If the component offers easy mouldremoval, cylindrical receiving holes arerecommended. For conical receivingholes: 0,5° to 4° (see Works Standard
Countersinking (N) is recommendedif embedding takes place within ataper of a 1°30' using heat.
