PRESS RELEASE
NOW WE RISE AND WE ARE EVERYWHERE
An exhibition and series of performances by Danielle Lemaire, inspired by the work and times of Nick
Drake.
6 - 9 September 2019
The ArchesTop Lodge Fineshade Wood Near Corby NN17 3BB
An exhibition with new drawings, a new riso-stencilled art book and 10” vinyl record, film, documents,
prints and performance related to the work and times of Nick Drake (born Burma 1948, died England
1974).
The new exhibition Now We Rise and We Are Everywhere by Danielle Lemaire (born Netherlands, 1967)
is inspired by the magical world of Nick Drake’s music; evoking the timeless, rural bliss of previous
English artists William Blake and William Morris.
Following his self-chosen death at the age of 26 in 1974, Nick Drake became a cult figure, inspiring a
community of “Drakeheads”. In this exhibition, Lemaire explores what makes his work so admired
today through a variety of media. The quality of Drake’s music and the psychedelic 60s and 70s in
which it was made were at odds with the conservative English Midlands of the time. In Drake's work
there is a tension between the reality of everyday life and the potential of something big and Founder Rosalind Stoddart FRSA Registered no 5434735 | Registered Charity no 122678
unknowable. Lemaire extends those tensions to Brexit-era Britain with drawings of the domestic but
uncanny, sited within the rural Fineshade Wood.
The exhibition opens at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art at The Arches in Fineshade Wood Friday, 6
September at 10am. A celebratory gathering including performances by Danielle Lemaire and Eerie
Wanda will begin at 6:30pm.
Now We Rise and We Are Everywhere is the result of initial research and discussion between Danielle and
Director of CCA Derry~Londonderry Catherine Hemelryk.
The exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Mondriaan Fund.

Editors Notes
Danielle Lemaire works in various media. Her drawings and paintings have subjects such as an ‘empty’
interior or landscape where human traces are tangible, shadows of a human life or a dream. The
depicted scenes seem to be in contact with energies that we cannot see with the naked eye. The people
in her drawings can function as antennas that communicate with the environment and the universe.
Sometimes it is shadows or spirits that represent a desire for a parallel world. She investigates the
relationship between her own work and the history and mystery of the subject in its specific
environment of space. The other world as a mirror to reflect where we are now.
Eerie Wanda is the brainchild of audio and visual artist Marina Tadic. Using minimal recording
techniques, Tadic shapes songs from intuition, while drawing inspiration from solitude, her music
echoes the dreamy atmosphere of the 60’s psychedelics.
