Programme Notes

Merrie England -

tu{u5i6 by Edward German Lyrics by Basil DeanFirst produced in 1902 and an instant success, this famous operetta is iompiled of a host of historical andfictitious characters set against the rich pageant of Tudor England. The partnership of Cerman & Dean washailed as the natural successor to Cilbert & Sullivan. The witty libretto and excellent music contribute to anextremely enjoyable and colourful entertainment.

The PlotThe story is contained within the historic period of the reign of Queen Elizabeth l. The Earl of Essex causesSir Walter Raleigh to lose favour with the Queen by revealing Raleigh's love for her lady in waiting, BessieThrockmorton. Elizabeth has Bessie imprisoned and Raleigh banished, but Essex later undergoes a changeof heart and works to end the estrangement between the lovers and the Queen, which he brings aboutusing a simple plan of deception. These events take place amid thejollity of May Day revels, which Elizabeth and her court attend, on thebanks of the River Thames.
