Thought of the Day
A legacy is something that a person leaves behind after they die. It can be money. Mostly it is a message, meaning, or action that was so powerful it stays alive long after you are gone. What would you want to be your legacy? Write 5 complete sentences.
Macedonians Invade Greece-Located on Northern borders of Greece-359BC Philip II comes to the throne; drawn into Greek affairs & wants to unite Greece under Macedonia-Athenians gather other Greeks to fight against the Macedonians at the Battle of Chaeronea; Greeks crushed!-Philip controls all of Greece, but is assassinated-He leaves his son Alexander (20yrs old) to be King of Macedonia
Alexander the Great’s Conquests-Philip prepared his son for being king by taking him along during battles & teaching him leadership-Alex wanted to fulfill his father’s dreams: the invasion of the Persian Empire-Entered battle with 37,000 troops; took over Palestine, Syria, & Egypt by 332BC-Made Alexandria the capital of Egypt-Soldier grew tired & refused to go through India-Soldiers dying of heat & thirst-Alex died of fever & wounds
Alexander’s Legacy-Master of strategy & tactics-Fight in all terrains; against all opponents-Brave & reckless by risking his own life (inspired soldiers)-Due to his conquests, Greek language, architecture, art, & literature spread throughout Southwest Asia, Central Asia, & Northern Africa.
Hellenistic Era-Hellenistic means “imitate Greeks” & describes the expansion of Greek culture-Macedonia splits into 4 kingdoms: Macedonia, Syria, Egypt, & Pergamum -Alexandria became the home to poets, writers, scientists, & philosophers-Library became largest (500,000 scrolls)-Kings spent money to beautify the cities within their states (statues, buildings,etc)-Large quantity of literature-Comedy emerges in theater
Science & Philosophy-Advances in science-Aristarchus developed theory that sun is center of universe (earth rotates around sun)-Eratosthenes determined the earth was round (24,675)-Euclid wrote Elements (textbook for geometry used in modern times)-Archimedes worked on geometry; established the value of pi-Epicureanism believed humans were free to follow own interest & to make happiness their goal
