Local Issues

A real educationrecent article in the Sunday Timesstated that Southend-on-Sea was one

of the best British coastal towns in which to live. One of the reasons quoted was the opportunityof a grammar school education. But with morethan two-thirds of the grammar school placesgoing to out-of-towners it would appear thatlocal parents have a better chance of theirchildren receiving that education if they live out-side the borough.

20 years ago the majority of our grammar schoolplaces were allocated to local children; by September 2013 of the 608 places available only184 will be filled by local children. The rest willcommute here from the outside borough. Whyare children travelling to Southend for theireducation from as far afield as Kent, London andColchester?

A

www.oraclepublications.co.uk T H O R P E B A Y O R A C L E 9M A Y 2 0 1 3

I believe the answer to this lies with the creationof academy status for various schools. Theseschools are funded directly by government grantwhich means by definition they are no longer answerable to the local authority. The academystatus is driven by league tables. If local academia cherry-picks star pupils from aroundthe country in order to boost their results it’s notsurprising that their league table performance isimpressive. Why else would we have this huge influx of children from outside the borough atthe expense of our own children’s education?

Once again we appear to have created a monster that is self-serving and does little tobenefit the local community.

In the past Southend-on-Sea always took pridein its education system, with excellent primaryschools preparing our children for grammar orcomprehensive school senior education. Thelocal centres of excellence – our grammarschools – provided senior education for pupilsliving within the Borough.

Our primary schools focussed their efforts on thefact that all children could benefit from a goodsenior education. In fact the primary educationwas so good there were frequent complaintsabout insufficient places being available at ourgrammar schools for local children who hadpassed the 11 plus examination.

Page 10: Thorpebay - Oracle May 2013

We need to ask:a) Are our non-selective schools offering a bet-ter choice of education?

b)Are parents discouraging their children from agrammar school education?

c) Are our primary schools discouraging ourchildren from a grammar school education?

d) Are children from outside Southend-on-Seabeing better educated and prepared than ourpupils?

Our educationists should be planning 5,10,15and 20 years ahead, ensuring that our childrenreceive an education to match the jobopportunities created from the airportexpansion and all ancillary businesses that gowith it. Southend has a golden opportunity toplan and drive itself out of this recession, not driftin the hope that tomorrow will look after itself.

Southend-on-Sea has some of the mostdeprived areas in the country and our ability toalleviate this situation can only come about withdecent housing, education and job creation.Unfortunately residents have seen failure in allthese areas over the last two decades. This has tochange.

Education is at the heart of our future prosperityand I have written this article in the hope that itwill encourage local debate that might lead to achange of policy direction and create bettereducational opportunities for local children.

Councillor Ron Woodley

We know that education is the major contributor to driving out poverty and creatingjob opportunities, both academic and vocationaland this must be balanced with the jobs that arebeing created within the town. Children from ourprimary schools must be given the best educational opportunities and be able to choosewhich senior education system they want toenter.

It is amazing to me that we have drifted so faraway from reality that we have forgotten that themost important thing we have to consider everyday is providing the best education possible forour own children.

This absurd state of affairs has arisen because ofpolitical obsession with league tables. Beingvoted “The best Council” and getting localschools higher up league tables seems to be all-important, but without the inclusion of localresidents children the exercise is vacuous. Whyare we educating children who will take thatknowledge away from Southend for the benefitof another town?

Why are Southend-on-Sea educationists celebrating the increasing popularity of non-selective schools? Are they becoming more popular simply because local children are not entering the grammar schools? In my view localeducationists should only be celebrating whenthey improve the local education standards but, sadly, last year only 45% of Southend children attending non-selective schools achieved 5 goodGCSE grades including English and Maths, against a national average of 59%.

hile most of us are keen to finally putwinter firmly behind us, the pupils and

staff at Thorpe Hall School are reflecting on oneof their most successful sporting seasons. Withimpressive team and individual achievements, the winter 2013 sports calendar proved to be oneto remember and culminated in the crowning ofa national champion.

The school’s Rugby season was one of the beston record with Thorpe Hall winning 10 out of 13fixtures against much bigger schools in theregion. They were also the only school in the borough to bring home medals in both the KS3/4 and KS 5/6 groups for boys and girls Hockeyin the Southend Borough finals.

At the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Cross Country Championships lastmonth, Thorpe Hall School teams put in yet another winning performance. To get to theevent held at Princethorpe School near Rugby, teams from over 24 schools competed in regional heats with the top 3 finishers in eachcategory qualifying. Six pupils from Thorpe Halltravelled to Rugby to represent East Anglia withYear 11 pupil Monte Hodges entering as seniorRegional Champion having won his qualifyingevent. It was Meghan Samuels in Year 7 that

Oracle Gardening

ne thing (and just the one) to thankthis interminable winter for is the

delay it has brought to the flowers and blossom,as May is the time when laborious but essentialwork must be undertaken in order for you to getthe best from the two key areas of any garden -the soil and lawn.

Well prepared soil will not only reward you withmore productive, healthier plants but alsogreatly reduce overall maintenance. The firstthing to do is to hoe all bare ground, severingweed seedlings before they mature. Followingthat you will need to mulch the garden ensur-ing the soil is moist beforehand.

Mulching is the key to a great garden as it feedsyour plants, improves the soil structure andsuppresses weed growth. Spread any gardencompost (organic manure is best and worth theadditional cost) across your existing beds whilstavoiding any emerging plants. Be generous - adepth of three to four inches is the norm in anyRHS garden.

The first thought when considering the lawn isto cut it but grass, like plants, needs to be fedand relieved of any weeds before they areallowed to flower. Try to spread the lawn feedevenly to prevent scorching - some treatmentswill contain elements preventing this but even

O distribution should still be attempted if only tosave money.

If moss is a problem then a specific product willbe required. Once this is done the lawn can nowbe cut. Fix the blades at a high setting wherepossible reducing the level over the next fewweeks. If there is no setting on your lawnmowertry not to 'scalp' it as this results in yellowpatches and sometimes bare soil that will bequickly populated by weeds. Mow regularly (atleast weekly - not just when you can no longersee your dog) as mature grass will have had timeto produce thicker stems which, when cut, willreveal unsightly brown or yellow tufts.

Regular cutting also results in a greener andmore robust lawn the latter being essential ifyou have children. As I say boring yet essentialwork but fun advice from here on in.Promise!

is the part of a wise man to keephimself today for tomorrow, and notventure all his eggs in one basket”, or

so goes the quote from Cervantes’ novel DonQuixote. And almost 400 years later, the sentimentis as true today as it may have been back then.

The discipline of diversification, in a financialsense, is one of which investors are being increas-ingly reminded given the volatile nature of globalinvestment markets over the past few years.

If we take a look back at how various asset classeshave fared both before the global banking crisisin 2008 and the period afterwards, it’s all too clearthat holding a balanced, diversified portfolio is akey factor in achieving your long term investmentobjectives.

No-one can predict which investment is going toproduce the best returns year after year, but thereare two things we can be fairly sure of; the bestperforming investment in one year can often turnout to be the worst performing investment thenext year and, by spreading your money across aselection of asset types, countries and sectors, your investments stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns.

Building a balanced portfolio is a question of managing risk versus return. Risk is not just aboutpotential capital losses – you also have to considerthe risk of inflation, for instance, and a reduction inincome if circumstances go against you. For example, the derisory rates on cash deposit accounts means that most people’s savings arefailing to keep up with inflation. Indeed,

Money Matters

higher-rate taxpayers need to find an accountpaying 5.33 per cent to keep pace with risingprices (source: Office for National Statistics, October 2012).

An investor’s attitude to risk is a key factor. Thesensible investor takes into account the amountof risk they are able to tolerate both emotionallyand practically in terms of their individual needs. It is therefore vital to understand the different lev-els of risk inherent in various types of investments.

History demonstrates that investing in equitiesbeats the returns of other assets, including cash, over the long term. According to data from Barclays Capital, over the period since the end of1899 equities have provided annualised real returns of 5.1% versus just 1.4% for gilts and 1.0%for cash (source: Barclays Capital 2011 Equity GiltStudy, assumes income reinvested).

The uncertainty impacting global markets is likelyto be here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. As the bailout discussions in Europe haveshown, there is no quick or simple fix. But thesame cannot be said for re-organising yourinvestment portfolio and the discussions youmight need to have with your financial adviser.

recipe of the month

Next month’s recipe:‘Easy Pea and Goat's Cheese’Tartlets'

Classic lemon Roulade

his is a light, fresh lemony roulade thathas a squidgy texture due to the

almonds. Rolling a roulade is easier than you thinkand it always looks impressive especially whenentertaining. If you want to add a bowl of summerberries it would be perfect.

Enjoy!

Cuts into 8 -10 slices

Ingredients4 eggs, separated110g / 4oz golden caster sugarGrated rind and juice of 1 lemon60g / 2 ½ oz ground almondsCaster sugar for sprinkling

For the filling250g tub mascarponeA little lemon juice2 -3 tbsp lemon curdTo decorate (optional)Zest and juice of 1 lemon30g icing sugar, siftedPreheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas 3

T

To make the sponge whisk the egg yolks with thesugar until pale and thick enough to leave aribbon like trail. Using a large metal spoon fold inthe lemon zest, juice and ground almonds.

Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiffand fold into the mixture in stages. Spoon into aSwiss roll tin 20.5 x 30.5 / 8 x 12in lined withbaking parchment making sure it overlaps theedges by about 1cm. Bake for 15-20 minutes untilgolden brown. When cool turn the roulade out onto a sheet of baking parchment sprinkled withcaster sugar. Remove the parchment lining andleave to cool.

To make the filling, mix the mascarpone withenough lemon juice to make a spreadableconsistency. Using a palette knife spread thelemon curd evenly over the roulade. Nowcarefully dot with the mascarpone mixture andgently spread in an even layer. Roll up from eitherthe long or the short side using the paper to help.If you don’t want to make the decoration just dustwith icing sugar. For the finishing touch, removethe zest with a zester so you get nice curly strandsand then juice the lemon. Put the zest in a smallbowl with half a tbsp of the juice. Mix the icingsugar with a little of the lemon juice a bit at a timeuntil you have a glaze that can be drizzled. ( if itstoo runny you will need to add more icing sugar)Using a spoon held above the roulade drizzle theicing using sweeping movements back and forthacross the roulade. Drain the lemon zest andscatter over the roulade

The completed roulade can be made a day aheadand stored in the fridge.

t's about 10 minutes til the auction starts. There are lots of people in the room and

we have over 300 registered bidders alreadyonline in 14 different countries. I've done aninternet microphone check and all looks ready togo. As always there is a sense of anticipation. Basically there's a "buzz" in the room that youcan't replicate in the TV programmes even thoughthey do try with the presenters chatting witheager sellers.

Okay, we're off with Lot number 1, a classic BMWZ4, which goes quickly to an internet bidder forabout what we expected. The next few lots followsuit and then there are some Chinese ceramics. Wehave Chinese bidders in the room as well asonline in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong andthe USA as well as a group of regulars online in theUK. . There's always a big question mark with themas to which pieces they are really interested in andwhether they will "take off" but a good sign isthere are some telephone bids booked too. They're always good for the tension!

Lot 32 has arrived, one I have hopes for but whichthe vendors didn't rate and neither did another

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas

his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Blues look to next seasonouthend United’s League 2 campaigncame to an end on April 27th against

Morecambe at Roots Hall.

Phil Brown’s side were unable to getthemselves into the end of season play-offs andthe manager will now be preparing his side forLeague 2 again next season.

That’s not to say Southend United fans will forget the past season in a hurry following theirfirst ever Wembley cup final appearance in earlyApril against Crewe Alexandra in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Despite the 2-0 defeat, Southend took over31,000 fans to the game, highlighting just howmuch potential the football club has, and ChiefExecutive Steve Kavanagh wants to see thosefans at Roots Hall next season.

He said: “Wembley proved just how much potential Southend United has, taking a recordnumber of fans to our first ever appearance atWembley.

“The players were unable to get the win for thefans but it was a day that will live long in thememory for anyone connected with the Club.

“Our aim now is to make sure that fans returnnext season. We’re disappointed that we’regoing to be in League 2 having not been ableto achieve promotion this season, but with the

new Stadium plans progressing well, a brightfuture awaits.

“Our Season Card prices will remain the samethroughout the summer as a way of trying toget more fans coming back to Roots Hall.

“Those who have already renewed will receivetwo free tickets to two games to bring theirfriends as we look to try and increase the attendances at Roots Hall.”

Striker Freddy Eastwood also believes Blues willcome back stronger next season following adisappointing campaign this time around. Hesaid: “The new manager has come in and it’sbeen great for me as I’ve been able to play in anumber of games since he has come in.

“We’re all looking forward to the new seasonstarting already and hopefully we can hit theground running. We need to have a good pre-season and make sure we come back fitterand stronger.

“We all wanted to get promoted this season butit’s not worked out that way. We still had amemorable trip to Wembley but the main focusnext season is making sure we win promotionto League 1.”

its Selective Information Evening. It is to helpyou decide whether you wish your child to sitthe 11+ test in order to gain a selective place atShoeburyness High School.

Following seven years of record performanceand this year’s outstanding result of beingrecognised by the Department for Educationas one of the top 100 schools nationally forbest improvement in straight GCSEs includingEnglish and Mathematics, the school hasattracted pupils for selective places from out-side of the borough for the next Year 7 intake

O in 2013. The biggest change, however, is thatwe are now becoming the school of choiceamongst families within our community. Keyto this has been the huge improvements in theresults of all our students, but in particularthose of our high ability students.

Shoeburyness High School is one of only twoSouthend secondary schools to convert all itsstudents with Level 5 on entry to 5A* - C GCSEsor equivalent, including English andMathematics. We are also one of only three secondary schools to convert all our Level 5 students to A* - C grades in GCSE English andMathematics. In year 11 our highest ability students take their AS English a year early, achieving outstanding grades. This gives thema real advantage in Year 12. At A level our passrate is an impressive 97.4% with an averagepoint score of 600 for each student. Shoeburyness have also bucked the national trend for university entrance, doubling the number of our students goingon to university and getting our first offer of aplace at Oxford University.

The offer at Shoeburyness for our high-abilitystudents starts in lower school where there isa full curriculum available including two Languages : French and Spanish. In addition,

At Key Stage Four our pathway curriculumensures that students have the opportunity tostudy for the full range of Baccalaureatesubjects. In Science they can study separateSciences and in English they can take theirEnglish AS level a year early, which our highestability students have done with outstandingresults.

Shoeburyness High School’s offer for highability students continues in Post 16 and, because of the size of our intake, we offer achoice of over 40 different courses. There areform groups that are pathway based, includingone aimed at students applying to theprestigious Russell Group Universities.

Shoeburyness High School has built itsreputation on being unique and different andfor being innovative and highly successful.
