Principal’s Prattle
Grant is still off sick again this week after a football
injury left him with a fracture. We wish him a speedy
recovery.
Earn & Learn
It’s been great to see so many
Woolworth’s Earn & Learn stickers
coming into the school. In the past
we have used them to buy much
needed things such as
bookshelves, learning resources
and art supplies. The rewards from
this program have allowed us to stretch our budget
further to provide more things for our students, so
keep the stickers coming. Book Week & Book Fair
Book Week is fast approaching
(August 24th –28th)and we
have lots of fun activities
planned. Starting off Monday
with the opening of our Book
Fair daily from 8:45-9:15am and
3:15-3:45pm. Don’t forget book character dress up
day is on Tuesday and our author visit with Susie
Sarah is on Wednesday. Please return payment for
this by Monday at the latest.

Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)
Commencing last term, students in the Prep/One class participated in the
Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) undertaking a range of activities twice
weekly with the assistance of parents and the senior students. The kinder
students also came and joined in each week. Designed by therapists, this
program is beneficial to the younger students because it helps them to be
better learners by strengthening things such as their fine and gross motor skills
and tracking ability. In the classroom, this translates in various ways such as
improvements in the student’s capacity to track words across the page when
reading and more awareness and control over their body which can help
with accuracy in their writing.

Pay It Forward
Students in the 4/5/6 class recently participated in a ‘Pay It Forward’ initiative
where they made something for another student in their class. This activity is
designed to encourage students to think beyond themselves and their
needs and do something kind for something else. The range of gifts that
came in was impressive—there were lots of yummy treats made, beautiful
drawings and other handmade creations. This act brought a smile to
everyone’s faces and boosted student self esteem.

Junior School Council News
Last term, Junior School Council hosted
a Red Nose Day event to raise money
for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(S.I.D.S.) Red noses and other
merchandise were sold to raise money
as well as a bake sale with goods kindly
donated by the Junior School
Councillor's parents/carers. Students
participated in a colouring competition
as part of the events with the chance to
win some awesome prizes. In all, over
$100 was raised.
For their social activity for the term,
Junior School Council held a glow disco
where they sold a range of glow
products and ran lots of fun activities.
One of the favourite events of the night
was glow bowling where water bottles containing glow sticks were used as
tenpins. The students danced the night away, even forming a few conga
lines. Coming up next week we have a movie night on Friday 28th of
August. Permission forms will be going out soon.

Fairy Tale Day
Students in Prep/One class held a fairy tale dress up day as part of their
learning on this topic. The kinder kids were also invited to join in on the fun.
There were princesses, big bad wolves, prince charming and even an ogre;
it was great to see every student participating in the dressing up.

Internet Safety
With the increase of students accessing the internet on
a daily basis, there is the danger that they may be
putting themselves at risk by accessing inappropriate
content, being a victim of cyberbullying or even
unknowingly chatting to dangerous individuals who
pose as children. It is important as parents to be aware
of what your child is accessing, whether through the
internet or gaming consoles, so that you can ensure that
it is suitable. Talk to your children about internet safety to
ensure they know how to conduct themselves safely
online. Below is some important information about
internet safety that you may find useful to help protect
your children.
1. Don’t let potential problems stop you from letting your child use technology for
their education and personal interests.
2. Put computers in a communal area of the house and don’t allow portable
internet devices (laptops, phones, tablets, etc) in the bedroom.
3. Find out what your child is doing online. Talk to them regularly about what
websites they visit and take the time to sit with them as they use the internet. Make
sure you’re familiar with how the sites that they visit work.
4. Encourage your child to tell you if they ever have a problem on the internet or if
they’re ever unsure about anything. Reassure them that you won’t take away their
connection to the internet if issues occur.
5. Remind your child to keep personal information private. YAPPY is a useful
acronym to remind children of the personal information they should not share on
public online spaces (blogs, forums etc.) – Your full name, address, phone number,
passwords, your plans.
6. Remind your child that not everything on the internet is true and not all internet
users tell the truth.
7. Don’t support your child to sign up for sites that are 13+ if they are under age
(Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc). Make sure your child sets their online ac-
counts to private to limit access to people they know well (when they are old
enough to sign up).
8. Encourage your child to balance their leisure time so they’re not spending all of
their time online.
9. Create your own internet rules for your household and have your child agree to
adhere to them.
Thorpdale Tennis Club Junior Tennis will start up at the beginning of next term and we are
hoping to have everyone back playing plus it would be great to see lots of new faces.

On Tuesday, Junior School Council hosted their annual Cupcake Day event to raise much
needed funds for the RSPCA. They organised a load of activities including a piñata,
scavenger hunt, cupcake decorating competition and much more. It was a very
successful day with fun had by all and a total of over $250 raised for this worthwhile
cause. Thank you to all who showed their support.
