Director’s Notes

Thoroughly Modern Millie—trite, hackneyed musical performed in high school auditoriums all across the country, or a chance for us to see that the new, or dare I say, modern way of life might not be the best way to live. Millie comes to the big city from Kansas looking for change—looking to become a “modern” —a person who advocates or practices a departure from traditional styles or values. She changes her look, her outlook, and most of all her way of thinking. Who needs love? On the flip side we meet Jimmy—good look-ing, rich, and lighting on flower after flower like a butterfly. Who needs love? Meeting by chance they immediately are at odds... until both are hit by Cupid’s arrow—though they thoroughly fight the impulse to fall for each other—and love prevails in the end. A message for our time? Find love in person through conversation and interpersonal interaction , not through your cell phone, social media nor the false hope that love awaits with a stranger that we are bombarded with on “reality” television. Maybe we should all power down for a while and see that who we are is more important than what we post. Enjoy the show!
