I’ve bred horses. I’ve trained them. I’ve broken them. I’ve raced them. I’ve foaled more than I care to re- member … but to be a part of something like this is just too much to fathom, honestly.” Brass Hat, who is trained by Bradley’s son, Buff, drew post seven in the 11-horse field, which includes multiple Group 1 winner Elec- trocutionist and multiple stakes winner Kane Hekili as well as United States-based Grade 1 winner Wilko and Grade 2 winners Super Frolic, Magna Graduate, and Choctaw Nation. Godolphin Racing’s Electrocutionist, winner of last year’s Judd- monte International Stakes (Eng-G1) at York and the 4-to-5 morning- line favorite by at least one British bookmaker, drew the rail for the 2,000- meter (9.94-furlong) race at Nad al Sheba racecourse. “I would have preferred to be to the outside, but we weren’t lucky today,” Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor said of the five-year-old son of Red Ransom, who scored a seven-length romp in the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum Challenge Cup-Round 3 (UAE-G2) on March 2 over the Nad al Sheba dirt. “Maybe our luck will come with a good trip on Saturday.” Kane Hekili, winner of the 2005 Japan Cup Dirt and, most recently, the Febru- ary Stakes on February 19 in Tokyo, drew post three, just to the in- side of Choctaw Nation, a hard-charging closer who showed his affinity for Nad al Sheba’s never-ending stretch with a third-place finish in last year’s World Cup. “If we get a good pace, he’s going to have a chance,” California- based trainer Jeff Mullins said of the six-year-old Louis Quatorze geld- ing, who will race for the first time under the colors of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al Mak- toum. “He’s more fit than he was last year, and with him, there’s really no strategy. OBSC MARCH SALE OF SELECTED TWO-YEAR-OLDS IN TRAINING

Agent Buzz Chace, acting for new buyer Al Gold, set a new all-timerecord price for any Ocala Breeders’ Sale Co. sale, bidding $1.8-mil-lion for a colt by Belong to Me at the OBSCMarch sale of selected two-year-olds intraining.

Chace outlasted Jimmy Gladwell, rep-resenting Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashidal Maktoum’s Darley Stable, for the big, handsome bay who worked a quarter milein :21 at the first presale breeze show onMarch 11.

“I thought he’d bring a lot of money,” Chace said. “Horses that worklike that, they usually go on. He was the fastest work in the sale, andhe just has a great demeanor. It’s a lot of money, but I think he’s a lotof horse.”

Gold is a New Jersey real estate developer new to the Thorough-bred business, and will send the horse to trainer Todd Pletcher. Bredin Kentucky by Mike Akers, Jeff Bowen, and Randy Zeller, the colt isthe first foal out of winner Vassar, by Royal Academy, and was listedas reserve not attained on a final bid of $105,000 at the 2005 KeenelandSeptember yearling sale.

“If this is what $1.8-million feels like, I’d hate to feel $16-million,”said consignor Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stable. “We felt like he wasthe best horse in the sale and we figured five, six, maybe $700,000.He’s a grand horse, he’s got leg, and he’s a beautifully balanced horse.”

The sale surpassed the previous OBSC high of $1,725,000 for thebroodmare K.D. Princess, dam of 1982 Horse of the Year Conquista-dor Cielo, set in 1982.

About ten minutes later, Gladwell set another OBSC record, bid-ding $1-million for a sweet-moving filly by Indian Charlie out of V Sign,by Robellino, easily beating the previous record of $575,000 for a fillyset by Yankee Victress in 2004.

“John [Ferguson] usually is not keen on buying fillies at two-year-old sales,” Gladwell said, “but we thought she was pretty special.”

Consigned by Mike and Britt Mulligan’s Leprechaun Racing, thefilly worked a quarter in :21.20 at the first presale breeze show onMarch 11. Leprechaun Racing purchased the filly for $67,000 at the2005 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky sale of selected yearlings.

The seven-figure horses assured that the sale as a whole wouldclimb into record territory as well. For the two days, 286 horses soldfor a record $31,044,000, up 17.6%, setting a record average of $108,545,up 32.8%. Median also rose to a record $75,000. Buy-back rate remainedstable at 27.4%.

“We knew that we had some more of the horses that really showedwell on the track and were nice physicals that fell today,” said Tom Ven-tura, OBSC’s director of sales. “That’s just the way the alphabet fell.

“Once you get to a certain price, I don’t think you can predict whatthese horses will bring.

“I think this sale has been moving right along and maybe today wearrived in the big time.”—John P. Sparkman

Pinhooker Dunne applauds ‘team effort’Ciaran Dunne has been pinhooking horses for a long time. The

Irish-born horseman came to America to work at Margaux Stud inKentucky in 1987, and spent some time on the racetrack with train-ers Tom Skiffington, Niall O’Callaghan, and Graham Motion.

But all too soon, in Dunne’s words, “Kentucky got cold.”The Bluegrass state’s colder winters precipitated a move to Florida

and by 1994 Dunne was out on his own, pinhooking two-year-olds.He has had his share of successes, selling Grade 3 winners GoneFishin and Your Tent Or Mine.

The record $1.8-million juvenile Dunne sold at the 2006 OBSCMarch sale of selected two-year-olds in training, though, is easily hisbiggest, surpassing a $1.5-million Golden Missile colt sold at theFasig-Tipton Calder sale of selected two-year-olds in training in 2005.

“It’s a team effort,” Dunne emphasized after the sale. “I’ve beengone since January 24. I go to Miami and I go to California, and Ishow up here and all the work is done for me.”

Dunne credits his wife, Amy, and assistants, Mark Edmonds, SalRuivera, and John Howard.

“They’re the guys that make it happen,” he said.In recent years he has benefited from a partnership with Mike

Akers of Dapple Bloodstock. Akers and Dunne buy yearlings to re-sell and also sell Dapple Bloodstock (which includes partner RandyZeller) homebreds like the record Belong to Me colt.

Akers consigned the colt to the 2005 Keeneland September year-ling sale but knew he would not sell when the colt was placed towardthe end of the sale.

“He was a great physical then, as he is now,” Akers said, “but wefelt there was some upside, and we got lucky.”

Dapple bought the colt back for $105,000 and sent him to Dunne.“It was a risk, but it was an acceptable risk,” Akers said.

Pinhooking is a high risk/high reward business. This time therisk paid off.—John P. Sparkman

OBSC March sale of selected two-year-olds in training

The Buzz®

Overheard behind the scenes of the OBSC sale

“This has been a great sale for West Point. Wepurchased a nice Two Punch from Ciaran Dunne,a lovely Lear Fan filly from Norm Casse and sev-eral colts in the $70,000 to $90,000 range that wefeel are very legitimate horses. We also purchaseda few nice New York-breds, which are easy to syn-dicate, so we are well along in terms of our acqui-sitions for this year. You really have to do it herein March, it’s a pivotal market and the better edu-cated you are as a buyer, the better you will do.”

Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds

“I think everybody felt that the better horses were on the secondday, and the million-dollar horses really helped the momentum of thesale. We had [nine] through here today and sold all [nine]. Yesterday,we brought three up here and sold one through the ring.”

Consignor David Scanlon of Robert N. Scanlon Training Center onthe brisk pace of business on the sale’s second day. Scanlon sold ten of 12horses offered for $649,000 at the two-day sale

“I think that [juvenile sale buyers] have gotten so sharp that theyfind a good horse anywhere. Certainly, there are some big buyers thatdon’t show up here regularly. I think it would certainly put a little moreemphasis on this sale in the future that it’s a sale that must be attendedby all the big buyers.”

Michael Mulligan of Leprechaun Racing, who sold one of the twoseven-figure horses, a $1-million Indian Charlie filly, to Darley Stable

“Within five horses through the ring, one brought $1-million andone $1.8-million. We barely had time to catch our breath.

“You have to give the consignors credit. They stepped up and broughtbetter horses here. I think it gives consignors the option of sellingtheir best horses right here in their backyard.”

DUBAI WORLD CUP DAY ROUNDUP

Turf course at Nad al Sheba ‘looks like pool table,’ McLaughlin saysEven under Dubai’s morning haze, the turf on the Nad al Sheba

course is a bright green. The lush grass is even and yields gently while still holding together.

The turf’s resiliency owes not only to the factthat the rail has been out on it throughout theDubai International Racing Carnival, which beganJanuary 11, but also to not having a race run overit for a week.

Two Group 1 races, each of fering a $5-million purse, are set for the turf course dur-ing the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) meeting onSaturday—the Dubai Sheema Classic and DubaiDuty Free.

“I can’t get over how good that turf looks,”said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who will saddle two-time Grade 3winner Mustanfar for the 2,400-meter (11.93-furlong) Dubai SheemaClassic.

McLaughlin, who was visiting Dubai for the first time in three years, scurried across the track and walked around on the soft, inviting lawn, then returned to the rail with a huge smile.

“It’s hard to understand how difficult it is to get a good turf coursein the desert, everything they have to do to it,” he said. “This is sogood. It looks like a pool table.”

The dirt track also feels a little deeper and softer than last year.“They have added water to the track. It feels great,” said trainer Jeff

Mullins, who returned with two third-place finishers from last year—Grade 1 winner Captain Squire, who is entered for the $2-million DubaiGolden Shaheen (UAE-G1), and Grade 2 winner Choctaw Nation, whowill start in the $6-million Dubai World Cup.

“It gets more like Churchill [Downs] all the time,” McLaughlinadded as he bent down and grabbed a handful of the dirt.

McLauglin will also send out Uruguayan standout Invasor (Arg) inthe $2-million United Arab Emirates Derby (UAE-G2).

Cordero becomes real life Gallop RacerRacing Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. got his initial im-

pressions of Nad al Sheba racecourse from, of all places, depictionsof the track in a Nintendo video game called Gal-lop Racer.

He is able to take in the real thing—as wellas the rest of the rich sights and sounds of Dubai—as he is in the Middle Eastern country for thefirst time as the exercise rider for Grade 2 win-ner Magna Graduate, who will start in the $6-million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1).

Cordero is also the agent for Eclipse Award-winning rider John Velazquez, who will pilotMagna Graduate in Saturday’s race. Velazquez

rides first call for Todd Pletcher and Cordero exercises horses for thetrainer in the mornings, including Elisabeth Alexander’s four-year-old

son of Honor Grades, thus gaining a valuable perspective for Velazquez, whose career he has helped to shape.

“It’s beautiful here,” Cordero said of Dubai. “I am very impressed.“It’s like a dream,” he continued. “I’ve never seen stuff like this be-

fore. The hotels are like palaces, and everybody is so helpful.”Magna Graduate finished the 2005 season with consecutive victo-

ries in the Pegasus Stakes (G3) on September 30 at the Meadowlands,Discovery Handicap (G3) on October 29 at Belmont Park, and ClarkHandicap (G2) on November 25 at Churchill Downs.

He opened 2006 with a fourth-place finish to fellow Dubai WorldCup participant Brass Hat in the Donn Handicap (G1) on February 4at Gulfstream Park.

Despite Magna Graduate’s disappointing finish in his seasonal bow,Cordero said the colt has been training well leading up to the most lu-crative start of his career.

And only one thing could make Cordero’s trip to Dubai more mem-orable than it already has been.

“I just hope we win. That would make it even nicer.”—Steve Bailey

Jockey McEvoy aims to kick off year in a big way … againFormer Australian riding star Kerrin McEvoy remembers vividly

last year’s Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) day card. The number two rider for Godolphin Racing

behind Frankie Dettori, McEvoy pulled one ofthe biggest upsets—in arguably the evening’smost impressive performance—when he rodeBlues and Royals to a 12-length romp in theUnited Arab Emirates Derby (UAE-G2), bestingundefeated Group 1-winning stablemateShamardal.

“It was quite exciting and as much a surpriseto me as it was everyone else,” McEvoy saidearly Wednesday morning during a large media

day gathering at Godolphin’s Al Quoz training facility.“Everyone already had seen what Shamardal could do, and there

were high expectations for him,” he said. “My horse was not as ex-posed as most of the others but showed exactly how good he was whenhe blew the rest of them away. That was very special.

“It also sort of let a lot of people know I could ride as a lot of peoplein England and other places around the world took notice of the vic-tory,” said McEvoy, who was based in Australia before signing on asGodolphin’s second-call jockey in 2004. He guided Brew to victory inthe 2000 Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1).

“It was the beginning of a great year for me,” he said of Blues andRoyals unexpected win.

McEvoy has several chances to get his 2006 season started off in sim-ilarly successful fashion on Saturday as he will ride Blatant in the Godol-phin Mile (UAE-G2), Unification in the UAE Derby, Heart Alone in theDubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1), Layman in the Dubai Sheema Clas-sic (UAE-G1), and Perfect Promise in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1).

“It’s been one dream after another with BrassHat. I’m 35 years old and I’ve been riding for 16years, working every day to get an opportunitylike this one. Words can’t describe the way I feelabout this. No matter where we finish, we’re al-ready winners just being here.”Jockey Willie Martinez, the regular rider of DonnHandicap (G1) winner and Dubai World Cup(UAE-G1) participant Brass Hat

“It’s going to be a bittersweet deal, obviously. It’s four days out and, to be honest, I kind of wish I still had the horse. But I’d like to see him do well both for the Sheikh and for Jeff.”California-based owner Bob Bone, who recently sold multiple Grade

2 winner Choctaw Nation—the third-place finisher in last year’s DubaiWorld Cup—to Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum. TrainerJeff Mullins will continue to train the six-year-old Louis Quatorze geld-ing for the time being for Sheikh Rashid

“The Duty Free is going to be a tough, tough race. There’s just somany good horses. You won’t find many fields deeper than this oneanywhere in the world.”

Kerrin McEvoy, Godolphin Racing’s second rider, on the 16-horsefield for the $5-million Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1), which will includenine Grade/Group 1 winners

“I’m relieved … thrilled … overwhelmed …Todd told me yesterday that I was supposed topull a number between five and nine. Missionaccomplished.”

Emily Votruba, co-owner of Grade 2 winnerMagna Graduate, who represented trainer ToddPletcher in Wednesday’s Dubai World Cup post-position draw. The four-year-old Honor Grades coltwill start from post eight in the 11-horse field, be-tween American hopefuls Brass Hat and Wilko

“We tell him he’s four. He doesn’t know he’s eight.”Tony McEvoy, assistant to trainer David Hayes, who conditions mul-

tiple Group 1 winner Fields of Omagh. The eight-year-old Australian-bred Rubiton gelding enters the Duty Free off a victory in the FuturityStakes (Aus-G1) on March 4 at Caufield

“Ten years ago, we would have had about eight horses in each raceand finished 1-2-3-4 in some of them. Things have changed and the com-petition is so much tougher. We have fewer horses running this yearthan we’ve ever had before because the competition is so great. Thatis the single most important thing for Dubai—to have all of these tremen-dous horses from all over the world racing here. It’s absolutely great.”

DUBAI WORLD CUP DAY ENTRIES

It can be intimidating traveling halfway aroundthe world for the first time to be a part of the rich-est day in Thoroughbred racing.

The excitement and anxiety can overwhelm eventhe most seasoned travelers during their initialDubai experience.

Imagine being thrust into that spotlight as a ten-year-old girl fromthe not-so-bustling metropolis of Frankfort, Kentucky.

That is just what happened on Wednesday as Kory Bradley walkedup onto a brightly lit stage in front of a packed auditorium to choosethe post position for Brass Hat as the bay gelding prepares to runin the $6-million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) on Saturday.

Despite the dozens of microphones thrust into her face and thehundreds of flashes popping and blinding her every other second, the daughter of trainer Buff Bradley—and granddaughter of owner-breeder Fred Bradley—handled herself with marvelous aplomb.

She did, however, admit that talking to reporters from all overthe world is not on her list of favorite things to do.

“I’m nervous,” she admitted with a shy smile. “I’m not used toall this attention.”

That is worth it, however, to have a day like she did earlier in theweek.

She and her father spent part of an afternoon under the hot Mid-dle Eastern sun at Wild Wadi, a huge outdoor water park, and thenwent snow skiing at Ski Dubai, a new indoor skiing facility that hasto be seen to be believed.

“That was really fun,” she said.“And how many people can claim they had their first ski lesson

in the middle of the desert,” her father added with a laugh.Oh, to be young again.
