LICE Unfortunately, lice doesn’t take time off. If you could do routine checks on your children, it could go a long way in curbing the spread of lice. The school needs to be informed if you are treating your child for lice. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Thank you!

“Change for Change”- Together we can make a difference

In March of 2013, the students and staff of TCS started a campaign called “Change for Change”. So far, we have raised $11,792.51! We have donated it to organizations like: Free The Children (to provide clean water and sanitation to our adopted village in Kenya), Big Brothers Big Sisters, the IWK, Roots for Youth, Pictou County Early Intervention, the SPCA, Pictou County Fuel Fund, the YMCA Strong Kids, Kids Help Phone, Children’s Wish Foundation, Multicultural Society of Pictou County, Fort Mac Red Cross, Syrian Refugees, Nova Scotia Cancer Fund, Haiti, and Nepal earthquake relief. We have decided to continue this initiative this year. Each classroom will be given a can with the logo “Change for Change” on it. The student leaders, along with each homeroom teacher, explain the purpose of the can, which is to raise money for those in need close to home and far away. Students are encouraged to make a donation at some point during the month. We suggest a dollar per person. At the end of each month, during our assembly, we will announce how much our school raised for the month and where the money will go. We hope that everyone will be able to support this initiative. Thank you!

Our total for October was $199.53 The top three fundraising classes were: Grade 8—First Place Grade 2 —Second Place Grade KA—Third Place

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to these classes and to everyone else for your contributions!

HOME AND SCHOOL MEETING WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH AT 4PM

TCS hosted the 13th annual United Nations Day on October 24, 2019. The theme for this years UN day was “Being an Ally”. Small groups of students from each middle school in the county worked on action plans to bring ideas back to their own schools to make a

difference. Honoured guests for the event were Carol and Hender-son Paris and facilitator Glenn Thompson.

We were very proud and humbled to be able to host this years event.

Election years are perfect opportunities for the students to be introduced to our electoral process with a mock vote and guest speakers from the political parties. Colton and

Grace are shown casting their ballots in the pictures

How We Do It

The Grade 2 class is working on Procedural or “How to…” Writing. They have followed instructions to make a pencil holder, did a science experiment to answer the question from the story “What Made the Seagulls Sink?”, made chicken soup and wrote up the recipe, and created animals out of clay, and then wrote the instructions for others to follow.

October was Fire Prevention Month. Members of local Fire

Departments, along with ‘Sparky’, came to Thorburn for

a practice drill and presentations, teaching

children about escape plans and fire prevention..

variety of technology devices to complete tasks, puzzles, and learned

about intergrating technology into their learning.

Grade 7 and 8 stu-dents attended We Day Atlantic 2019 in Halifax on October

16th.

On Friday October 18th the Grade 4 class traveled to Pictou to visit the Ship Hector. They were able to visit the museum and tour the ship, getting a taste of what sea life was like for the crew and

passengers on board in 1773.

On October 17th, the our grade three students had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Industry and participate in the structures program. Students were shown examples of

compression and tension within the museum to make it a stable and strong structure. They were also given a group challenge to construct the tallest structure. The grade 3s did a

wonderful job working together and enjoyed their time at the museum. Great job grade 3s!
