C. Louise Caudill, M.D.Honorary Degree RecipientDoctor of Laws
As sure as an arrow seeks itsmark, Claire Louise Caudill wasdestined to become a doctor. There was never any doubt inher mind about her future. Withher medical degree in hand, shewould return to her belovedhome in eastern Kentucky topractice her profession in herhometown of Morehead, inPowan County.
However, the pathway of thatdream was not without itscurves. Being a pioneeringwoman in the field of Medicinein the early 40's had its owndifficulties. But her doggeddetermination to succeed, andher realization of the great needfor physicians in Morehead, spurred her on to completemedical `school in three years.
After special training inObstetrics at Oneida MaternityCenter in clay County,Kentucky, Dr. Caudjll said, "it istime to come home." BringingSusie Halbleib, a registerednurse and a loyal friend, withher, she immediately set up anoffice on Main Street. Together, they "tromped up hollers andhopped through creek beds" to
relieve the sufferings of thosetoo sick to come into town.Everywhere they went, theycarried their medical gear suchas a portable delivery table, sterile pads, I,V. fluids -everything, just in case.Middle-of-the-night trips toremote and rugged sections ofthe area often kept them outuntil dawn. It was not unusualfor them to go by horse-drawnsled when the snow was toodeep for their '47 Pontiac.
Eventually, the Office gaveway to the construction of aclinic, housing a birthing centerand living quarters for Dr.Caudill and Susie. As timepassed, it became apparent toDr. Caudill that a "good hospitalwas needed in Morehead, andthree things were necessary tomake it so: a good building, someone dependable to run it,and good doctors to staff it. " Thegood building was easiest tocome by. "Susie and I went fromhouse-to-house asking formoney, and everyone openedhis purse." In collaboration withthe Diocese of Covington andthe Sisters of Notre Dame, thesecond reqliirement was met.
The University of KentuckyCollege of Medicineenthusiastically agreed to sendits interns, using the hospital asan educational center forphysicians. In appreciation ofher devotion and service to theCommunity, and her selflessefforts in bringing the hospitaldream to a reality, the structure,St. Claire Medical Center, wasnamed in honor of Dr. Caudillwhose formal first name isClaire.
Thomas More College isproud to confer an honorarydegree upon Dr. Claire LouiseCaudill, woman pioneer inObstetrical expertise, who hascontributed so much to thehealth and welfare of the peopleof the Commonweath ofKentucky. How appropriatelythe words of Isaiah, theProphet, come to mind whenthinking of Dr. Caudill: "Howbeautiful on the mountains arethe feet of those who come tobring good news; to bringPeace."
