Even during challenging economic times, 2009 proved that

our community values the work we do here at Thompson

Health. More than 3,000 individuals, organizations and

businesses told us how important Thompson Health is to

them through their support.

Collectively, the individuals and groups highlighted

and listed on the pages of this report have made a

tremendous impact. Whether through a lead gift to our

capital campaign, an individual’s gift to our annual fund,

or a group’s contribution to one of our programs, we are

reminded of how much those in our community care for

The Sands Family has a long legacy of generous support for Thompson

Health including the Sands Cancer Center, Intensive Care Unit, Ferris Hills

and Clark Meadows and numerous other important projects throughout

our campus. In 2009, the Sands Family and Constellation Brands pledged a

combined gift of $4 million in support of our 61,000 square foot, two-story

expansion and 42,000 square foot renovation of F.F. Thompson Hospital.

When completed, the space will include new areas for Surgical Care,

Ambulatory Procedures, Rehabilitation Services, the Laboratory, Nutrition

Services, Associate Services and other administrative areas.

This latest gift is a tremendous statement of support for our mission, our

Associates, and our community and is the lead gift in our capital campaign.

We are exceedingly grateful for the generosity of the Sands Family. This

along with the support of others will carry Thompson Health into the future.

Guild helped fund the new state-of-the-art

digital x-ray machine at the Urgent Care Center.

We are especially grateful to Tom and Betsy

Kubiak for funding the Patient Waiting Area;

Dale and Patty Hunt for their contribution for the

Children’s Waiting Area; and the Canandaigua

Kiwanis Club for their generous pledge for the

renovation of the Patient Reception Area. Many

Urgent Care Center

Community support has made the newly renovated

Thompson Health Urgent Care Center and the digital x-ray

suite in Farmington a reality. This facility and its new

services further expand Thompson’s ability to serve

families and individuals in the community who have non-

life threatening injuries or are in need of medical care

after hours when a regular primary care physician is

unavailable. This center helps free up the Emergency

Department at F.F. Thompson Hospital for more traumatic

injuries and has the added benefit of offering service

with a lower co-payment and with less wait time than

typical Emergency Room visits.

The Thompson Guild established an Education

Fund in 1997 for all Associates in the

hospital and the M.M. Ewing Continuing

Care Center. Their annual support has

provided Associates an opportunity to

learn more about topics as diverse as

wound care, physical therapy and balance

disorders, recreational therapy and even

Work force Initiative Suppor t

Well-trained professionals with up-to-date skills and information

are crucial in ensuring effective care and prompt intervention for

the increasingly complex health concerns of our patients. Thanks to

generous gifts from the Thompson Guild, Thompson Health Medical

Staff, and KeyBank, our Workforce Education Funds were replenished

to assist Associates with the cost of continuing education.

Because health care is changing so rapidly, nurses and other clinicians

are required to demonstrate competencies and receive continuing

education as part of their annual credentialing. The Thompson Health

Medical Staff contributes annually to Thompson’s Nursing Scholarship

Fund to ensure that our nursing staff can receive the required training

and remain current with the newest and best modalities of care. Our

corporate neighbor, KeyBank, has recognized the importance of our

workforce development and awarded the Nursing Scholarship Fund

with a generous grant from the KeyBank Foundation.

Navigation Program Suppor t

Each year approximately 50 women from our community

are diagnosed with breast cancer at F.F. Thompson Hospital.

For these women, and for others seeking breast care,

Thompson Health offers the Breast Health Navigation

Program. The six-member navigation team of health care

professionals, including a mammography nurse, a breast

health specialist and a social worker, is dedicated to

working with women for early detection and treatment.

The team assists women who have been diagnosed with

cancer navigate the health care system to receive the

necessary care and support services. Funds raised for this

program ensure that the services the team provides are at

no cost to the patient.

Suppor t for this program has come from several different

sources including the Penn Yan Girls’ Cross Country Team, which donated profits

from the sale of pink sweatpants, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield which funded

educational materials and teaching models. Proceeds from three fundraising

events – the 1st Annual Bowl for the Cure at Roseland Bowl, the 6th Annual Pink

Fly Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament, and the Pink Ribbon Round-Up at the

Sonnenberg Bridal Showcase – all benefited the Navigation Program. In addition,

a grant from the Komen Central New York Affiliate was awarded for a screening

So many community groups support Thompson Health in so

many ways. Here are a few examples of our community’s

generous spirit.

• Numerous individuals, families, and companies provided elaborate gift baskets and premium wines for the Summer Soiree Gala silent auction, which supported our Urgent Care Center’s expansion and renovation.

• The Canandaigua Rotary gave funds towards a patient-controlled analgesia device for post-operative patients.

• The Canandaigua Federal Credit Union donated the proceeds from an Employee Dress-Down Day to Thompson’s pediatric patients.

• Wal-Mart made numerous in-kind donations to Thompson events including a Wii gaming console for the 18th Annual Holiday Bazaar raffle to benefit the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center’s Wish Upon a Star program.

• The Goff family accessed Thompson’s Wish List and collected gifts for our pediatric patients at their Halloween Birthday Party.

• Bob and Aimee Ward, owners of Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame, gathered artwork from more than 25 local artists and held a silent auction to benefit the Sands Cancer Center.
