Welcome to our 9th Annual Bull Sale!It’s been 16 years since we bought our 1st

package of 10 bred heifers from the ShodereeRanch in 1998. Those 1st years were fun, but youwere always watching someone else’s breedingchoices on the calves. Once we started pickingour own herd sires (starting with Red U2 Wanted917J), we really started to enjoy being a breeder.It just gets better and better. Now we’re calvingout cows from 3, 4, and 5 generations of ourown choice of sires, our own culled heavyheifers, and raising calves from mating’s welined up and thought about all through breedingseason. This is awesome!The Red and Black Angus bulls are as good as

we’ve ever brought to town. There are powerfulcow bulls to calving ease heifer prospects withplenty of choices for you to pick from. The Charo-lais bulls are down in numbers, but the qualityis still there. We feel if it’s not good enough tomake a bull, we won’t be taking it to town nomatter how short we are in numbers. Qualitywill dictate how many bulls we sell in a year. TheCharolais is a new program for us; we are juststarting to milk some daughters from our ownbreeding choices.The bulls were fed at TFS Fincastle this year,

14 sons sellWe partnered with Silver Spur Ranch to buy this bull sight unseen out of

Biebers 2012 bull sale. The $33,000 price tag seemed a little hard to takeat first, but upon seeing the bull we knew we had something pretty spe-cial. Others must have thought so as well, because later that fall his first 2packages of semen to sell in Canada fetched as high as $350 per straw.Every bull needs time to prove himself. First they have to calve easy, growgood to weaning, grow good to yearling, finish out with a good carcass, orturn into a nice young cow. Well the first Rollin Deeps have just startedmilking, and I’m thinking by the looks of them, $33,000 was a pretty cheapprice to pay for this quality of an investment. The bull can be seen up atstud at Alta Genetics, as they’ll be drawing semen off of him for the SouthAmerican and South African markets.

7 sons sellDevon Warrilow bought Entourage out of our 2013 sale to add some out-cross bloodlines to his good young red herd. We’re using 168Z because wecould use a little extra power on some of our more maternal blood lines,and wow does he ever add it. His first calf crop ratios were 104 for weaningand 106 for yearling. Not that he’s going to give away anything on the ma-ternal end of it, as his dam is as beautiful an SAV Initiative daughter as youcould make her.

Kenny Forster south of the border. We bought the Canadian semen rightsto Endorse and have used him fairly heavily since. He’s been an excellentchoice on Prairie Smoke and Magnetic 331T daughters, adding perform-ance without compromising frame and calving ease. Although not a heiferbull, we have used Endorse successfully on smaller framed heifers thatneeded some oomph.

placement females as you could imagine.

2 sons sellOur herd is littered with Escalade daughters, and we just can’t get

enough. There isn’t much this bull doesn’t do well. His calves grow wellwith excellent hair coats. He’s got as nice a carcass numbers as you canfind in the breed. He absolutely will improve feet and udders. We don’t havea lot of semen left on him, and he was lost this past fall, but you’ll see asprinkling of him for a few years to come, not to mention all his daughtersraising bulls in the sale.

3 sons sellWe were looking for a black AI sire that would be a little different from

most of the pedigrees out there, and settled on this guy. I don’t know verymuch about him, other than what he gave us for calves this year. Theyseem lower birth weight with adequate growth, enough so that we usedhim again last spring. I believe these are the only sons of his available inCanada this year.

2 sons sellOnly 2 sons to choose from out of this tremendous female producer. We’venoticed his actual carcass data is not quite as good as his EPD’s say theyshould be, but that’s something you get used to with using American bulls.Herd builder.

A full ET brother from the same flush as lot #1, only28B does carry the red gene. The sire of these brothers,168Z, is I think the most powerful bull we have everused, pound for pound, but the birth weights are legit.These are cow bulls, not meant to be anywhere nearyour heifer pen. Rolls Royce 44B would maybe the most complete bullwe have ever raised. In looking at him today, you wouldn’tthink he’d be a calving ease bull, but I have no qualmsabout recommending him on straight Angus heifers. Heratios tremendous, with a 104 wean index, 129 yearling,112 REA, and a 125 marbling, with just above average ribfat. His dam is an elite Red Geis Knighthawk 14’02daughter, and probably our best Knighthawk daughter ofthem all. Selling ½ interest and ½ possession.

We went back to the well with the sire of lot #4. Weused Red TR Escalade 318T a lot before we eventuallysold him to Matt Janzen, where he raised him his$18,000 high seller last year. He gives such consistentquality calves that we plan on AI’ing to him here andthere for years to come. Big Rig 46B is a really goodsolid, moderate birth weight cow bull that will give you agreat set of calves.

Intrigue 57B is a very stylish bull with excellent car-cass data and a beautiful uddered outcross dam. I’mthinking I may have got his weight wrong, as he sureseems to have come along better than his 81 yearlingindex would say. I do think this bull has herd bull poten-tial, maybe a little too much for a heifer bull, although Ihave used the sire, 639X, on heifers with no troubles atall. This is a bull to take a closer look at.

I don’t know what to think of this monster. He’s a cowbull. A 94 lb birth weight, not too big. Then he had a115 weaning index. That’s when he exploded. His justover 5 lbs a day gain on test gives him a 143 yearlingindex.His carcass is unreal. A 114 REA index with a 108marbling index, but amazingly enough, only an 81 rib fatindex. The bull is 1500 lbs and he’s not carrying anyextra fat! A bull that just needs to be seen in person.Retaining a full ½ semen interest.

A few theories on….. NumbersA couple of different things I was noticing on the Lot #1 and Lot #2 bulls, both full brothers. If you compare them closely, 27B

has a heavier yearling weight, but 28B has a better lean meat yield. If you take 27B’s weight of 1370 and times it by its LMY of63.2%, you get a carcass weight of 866 lbs. Do the same with 28B’s weight of 1321 lbs X its LMY of 65.6% you get a carcassweight of 867 lbs. Now add to the fact that 28B is AAA marbling, which will add a premium generally on average in the $12 range,and you get a glimpse of which one is the more valuable carcass. $12 is not much, but our end goal is to try and keep as much profitin the final result as we can.

Now my favorite thing to talk about…EPD’s. If you compare the 2 FULL brothers you’ll notice their EPD’s are quite a bit different.Because 28B has a red gene his EPD’s are based on the Red Angus EPD’s, whereas 27B are Black Angus. That’s fine till you look atthem. Both birth weight EPD’s are 1.5 to 1.6 above breed average. 28B’s WW EPD’s are 25 pounds above average while 27B’s areonly 14. 28B’s YW EPD’s are 48 pounds above, while 27B’s are only 19. 28B’s REA EPD is .26 above, while 27B is .09 below. 28B’sMarbling EPD is .30 above while 27B’s is .09 below. Now I’m told the discrepancy is because 28B had his actual production num-bers factored in, while 27B, being a straight black bull, only gets parental averages. Now how do you suppose I’m supposed to tellmy bull customers the importance of using EPD’s when I can’t make sense of them myself?

Understanding UltrasoundIn order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to itsfull potential, a breeder must have an understanding of ultra-sound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements arecomparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data issimply collected on yearling bullsa and heifers instead of marketready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers andbecome comfortable with the terminology.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS MEASUREMENTSRibFat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken betweenthe 12th and 13th rib reported in inches. Rib fat is the main traitthat affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3 & A4. Percentlean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent oflean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of60% on a 100lb carcass would have 600 lbs of lean muscle and400 lbs of bone and fat.Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeyemuscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfatwil lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raisethe percent lean meat yield.Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an imagecollected between the hooks and the pins of the animal.Re-ported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with therib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent leanmeat yield.Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/Marbling: This measurement deter-mines the amount of fat within the muscle.
