A crazy day of shopping in Sutton-on-Sea: If, on Friday June 1st, anyone had arrived in Sutton drawn by its reputation as a tranquil little village they may well have wondered if they had come to the right place ~ or if they were simply experiencing a surreal sort of hallucination.

~ GRANNIES UNITED ~
It was the day of the Residents Street Party which seeks to promote our village shops: & aided & abetted by the Granny Turismo Supermarket Trolley Dance Formation Team we invited all to dress up as Grannies. So here, above, is how Lenny of Watson’s responded to
the challenge. This & the other shots are from the intrepid Nev Brennan of the

What was quite striking about our SHOP IN SUTTON STREET PARTY DAY was this statistic it illuminated: We actually have over 50 shops & pubs etc in Sutton…. & all of them were ready to take part in this bit of fun.
I don’t know whether the above photo dates from the time when D.H.Lawrence’s family came to stay in Mablethorpe or when, later, he stayed in Sutton-on-Sea & spoke in a postcard sent from here of his idea of writing the book that gained notoriety as “Lady Chattterley’s Lover”…. but certainly at that time Sutton was known for its shops. In Lawrence’s earlier novel “Sons & Lovers” when its protagonist Paul Morrell is staying in Theddlethorpe with the
One of the ideas to encourage visitors (& residents!) not just to look in the windows of our shops but to venture inside was the trail of old photos with the aim of working out what has taken the place of such once familiar places as the Beach Hotel & the Savoy Cinema. The photo to the right was NOT part of this trail… but yes, it was taken in Sutton-on-Sea before the time when people started going on to our beach more skimpily clad.
married woman with whom he is having an affair, he wants to have a quiet day painting so he suggests she goes off to Sutton with her mother to do some shopping!
A recent survey of Lincolnshire tourism has shown how many holiday makers visiting our county have shopping on holiday as one of their main objectives: & our bit of the coast scores heavily with this group of tourists. SO SUPPORT OUR SHOPS! They are playing a vital part in keeping our village the vibrant place it is.
With best wishes for the summer,
Adrian

AN ODD WELCOME…
but an enthusiastic one nonetheless! A visit to the Street Party was one of the early assignments of our new Police Sergeant:
Cherry Kelly who is now heading the small (& so hard pressed) team looking after Sutton-on-Sea along with Alford & Mablethorpe.
But despite the challenge (& her boisterous welcome from the Mobilr Grannies whom she jibbed at arresting for disturbing the peace)
Cherry is looking forward to working in our community: “I really wanted this job,” she declared, “& I am set on being here for a good long time.”
We do thank her for the positive approach she has so far taken, & assure her of our support in the major tasks which undoubtedly lie ahead of her.
…AND AN ODDER FUND-RAISER
This splendid Flower Pot Man was donated to the Residents in aid of the Beach Huts
& the raffle for him meant he has now moved from his home in Marine Court to the abode of his winner on the Springs Caravan Estate.
We’re especially grateful to his donor as the raffle for him
raised a splendid £83. Helping him on his way by selling the tickets
here’s another Granny to whom we have cause to be grateful for her help with the Huts & In Bloom :

It was noted that the recent Royal Wedding did not inspire a huge amount of public celebration ~ despite the excitement & general rejoicing it inspired. Our streets were deserted with most following the ceremony at home on their TVs.
However, the happy couple did take the opportunity to visit Sutton probably nipping quickly out while all were mesmerized by the long sermon). They were thus captured here on camera pausing outside Knick Knacks!

NEWS FROM OUR GARDENING
GROUP
By the time you read this ~ for better or worse ~ the Judge from the East Midlands IN BLOOM will have come & gone… but the efforts made by so many in our community towards taking part in that competition will remain: much of it in evidence throughout the coming holiday season… & more that will be the seeds of inspiration for years to come!
Kath Johnson the Leader of our Gardening Group will be presenting to the judge a summary of all that the Group does throughout the year keeping so colourful the fringes of our Pleasure Gardens, the area around our War Memorial, the planters along our High Street & the entrance to our village ~ especially the Diana Memorial Garden seen on the right each time we approach Sutton-on-Sea from Trusthorpe.
This year a small sub-committee of the Group spurred on by Cllr Helen Matthews has been responsible for some extra initiatives reminding us of our heritage… the links with the remarkable naturalist Sir Joseph Banks (take a look at the sun-dial in our Pleasure Garden) our iconic buildings (see them now portrayed on the Meridale wall overlooking the Paddling Pool) & our association with the RAF, so special in this centenary year: look at the 100 RAF insignia now like poppies “growing” in the land near where the Savoy Cinema stood. As well as all this there are the Incredible Edible planters by the War Memorial where fruit & vegetables are growing ready for those who pass by to harvest… useful as well as being decorative!
To glimpse something of all this work & more, turn over & see photos of all our Group & their helpers are achieving!

LINKING UP COAST WITH COAST
Last month’s AGM of the Mablethorpe Area Partnership ~ MAP ~ resolved unanimously to dissolve itself as a “Community Interest Company” [c.i.c.] but then to re-form itself as a constituted community group. This means the body is going back to its original vision… as a partnership helping businesses, community groups, charities & statutory authorities all work together for our stretch of the coast, from Anderby to Theddlethorpe.
The government is acutely aware of the difficulties & opportunities of England’s coastline & so has set up COASTAL COMMUNITY TEAMS. The Coastal Alliance number the teams from Cumberland round to Northumberland with us as number 98. Each week a bulletin is issued alerting us to initiatives, to new funding & to things happening in other coastal communities.
To make our own Team as representative as possible members of MAP are asked to nominate to it people who can speak for the different sectors of our community.
And to keep MAP & CCT98 working along parallel lines they now have the same officers:
Chair: Cllr Helen Matthews of Poplar Farm Vice Chair: Gareth Rowlands of Holivans Treasurer: Janet Stubbs
of Woodthorpe Garden Centre Secretary: Adrian Benjamin
of our Residents Association. It is useful that Gareth & Janet are also Directors of our Business Improvement District.
Janet is pictured here at a recent networking session of MAP at
Holivans: she is on the left with representatives of the Residents Association
[L to R] Gerry & June Newman, Adrian & Vice Chair of the Residents Gordon Moss.
www.mablethorpe.info www.suttononsea.info
Established in 2001 by Keith Butters (Bowhunter Websites) with the backing of the Town Council & what was then our tourism forum, these popular inter-linked sites have now also received the backing of MAP & CCT98 ~ thus linking them with other Coastal Alliance.sites around the UK coastline.
Since April these two sites have been serviced by our locally based website developer Chris Drew (MGC Websites Ltd), a familiar figure in Rotary. He has applied a few cosmetic updates to freshen up the sites & most days he is now adding on up-dates. And he plans bigger changes during 2018.
The sites are funded by the businesses that advertise on them (from just £3 a month) which effectively sponsors the community content. On the Sutton-on-Sea site is a link to TROVE very soon after it has been published … so if you can’t wait for your deliverer to bring you your hard copy, or if you want to send information that is in TROVE to friends without using the post, this is the site to use. This gives those advertising here wider circulation… but the site itself sorts those using it by categories (shops, restaurants, venues etc) so it is worth advertising direct as well. The sites dominate Google's search results for all things Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea. They received around 340,000 page views over the last 12 months. Chris fully expects this to increase as he improves the site & applies his hard-earned technical know-how. The recent inclusion of the Mablethorpe Webcam has already proved to be a popular addition. If you'd like to advertise, contact Chris on 0845 8387802. He'll come to see you to take the photos & talk through the best wording for your advert.
PUTTING UP THE BUNTING READY FOR THE CARNIVAL, IN BLOOM & THE CUP COMING HOME
Ronnie to Brian: 1: “Can you pass me the next stretch?” 2: “….When you have finished taking photos…?” 3: “…….Oh if you want me to pose first, OK darling…”
“And they say there’s another Dog Show at the Furlongs Festival?” “Yap! Yep! See you there!”
THANK YOU…
to the Bacchus Hotel for hosting the CARNIVAL VILLAGE FETE at short notice & to Good Company & the KP Dance Troupe & the Dog Show Judge Steve Caton
for helping so generously!
MIRAGE BOWLING ADVERT: 01507 479 897
THE AGM OF THE BIG LOCAL COASTAL COMMUNITY CHALLENGE Wednesday May 23rd 2018 in the Mablethorpe Community Hall: Extracts from papers presented then:
Feedback after the independent assessment on the Plan for the next 3 years: ➤ “The demographics have worsened ~ health, education, housing outcomes are poorer now than in
2013, worklessness is higher. Benefits changes have impacted negatively on local people & public services are collapsing. The partnership is keenly aware of these shifts & tries to work with the Town Council to address some of them… ➤ “There is a lot in this Plan & it’s ambitious & broad. The partnership is much better organized now
& more outgoing & they seek to work with a wide range of partners, & they are persistent in seeking to forge relationships… ➤ “The partnership has a relatively long list of “Legacy” projects & it’s important to remember that not
everything that is achieved will be visible, especially as some of the legacy will be more in improving & transforming lives, creating jobs & supporting new businesses rather than in physical changes.”
Chairman’s Annual Report:
“We have worked on several new exciting projects, for example, with the Marisco Patient Group in conjunction with Magna Vitae, the facilitation of an exercise referral programme to encourage & enable patients to improve their health. We have also worked closely with Hope House by commissioning a pioneering pilot initiative for the homeless within our community….
“Over the past year we have worked in partnership with the Community Payback team. Each week the team has worked with on community projects from clearing sand off the promenade, disabled ramps & steps, to cutting back & clearing St Mary’s Park whilst working in the gardens of many of our community building, plus Trusthorpe Cemetery.
“This has been at absolutely NO COST to Big Local. This is just one example of how we are working in partnership with many organizations. We have worked in partnership with the Town Council, ELDC, County Council, Mablethorpe in Bloom & Mablethorpe Art Group...”
