Verve Music Groups Chairman David Foster Honored with StarThe Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored David Foster with the 2,499th star on the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, May 31, 2013. David Foster is a master at writing music and he has written songs for some of the most famous entertainers in the world! stated Leron Gubler, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. We welcome this great artist to our Walk of Fame family.

Before he became one of the most successful record producers in history creating albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions David Foster received a valuable piece of advice from legendary music impresario Quincy Jones. He said to me, If something isnt exactly the way you think it should be, dont put your name on it, Foster recalls. His words of advice had a great impact on me, and since then Ive always fought for my artistic vision. I dont always win, but I know when an artist hires me, its my job to push them toward greatness, and to get something out of them they didnt know was there. My personal motto has become, compromise breeds mediocrity.

For his illustrious work, Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including three for Producer of the Year, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, and racked up three Oscar nominations for Best Original Song.

  • In June 2010, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. In 2012 Foster entered a new phase in his career, becoming the chairman of Universals Verve Music Group. His mission, he says, is to turn the fabled jazz label (founded in 1956 and home to Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz luminaires) into the premier label for singing legends and legends in the making.

The labels roster includes Andrea Bocelli, Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. Foster recently signed Grammy-winning artist Sarah McLachlan and R&B-soul great Smokey Robinson.

As a musician, artist, writer and producer, Ive been on both sides of the glass in the studio, Foster says. I feel like Ive been prepping for this new job for 40 years.

Reflecting upon receiving a star on the Walk of Fame, Foster says, One hundred years from now, my great-grandchildren will go, Hey, theres my great-grandpa, and having a star next to The Beatles outside the building where I first got signed thats perfect.

  • An international conference entitled Global Circulations of Jazz will be held on June 27- 28, 2013, at the muse du quai Branly. Bringing together specialists, anthropologists, historians, musicologists, sociologists, the dissemination of jazz outside of its places of birth will be explored. We will look at this other jazz, whose history is little and poorly known. Jazz music circulated very early on and engendered particularly rich and fertile musical and cultural progeny around the world.

Papers are encouraged that will increase our understanding of the spread of jazz in South Africa, in Mauritius and in the Indian Ocean, South America and even in India and Asia. This global jazz prefigured the great movement of globalization of popular music in the twentieth and twenty- first centuries, but remains poorly documented. The conference will bring together researchers from different countries, who have begun to address, preferably on an empirical basis, these secondary circuits of diffusion. The conference will conclude with the screening of a documentary on the dissemination of jazz in India, Finding Carlton. Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India, followed by a discussion with the director, Susheel Kurien. Global Circulation of Jazz Intl Conference set for June in Paris

  • Finding Carlton. Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India, followed by a discussion with the director, Susheel Kurien. The conference will clarify the concrete modalities of the international movement of a musical form, focusing, in particular, on exporters (foreign musicians, agents, cultural industries) and importers (local musicians, audiences, cultural institutions).

The conference intends to highlight these cultural intermediaries, but also to examine the dynamics of broadcast networks, the role of national and international music industries as well as the essential role of places (night clubs, theatres, etc.)... Jazz established itself and developed, actually, in multiple arenas from South America to Asia to Africa. This conference will take a fresh look at the sociology of cultural globalization and help synthetizing localized research studies, allowing us to transform our vision of jazz history focused up to this point on its major centers of creation, the United States and Europe.

  • new release of the weekCCILE MCLORIN SALVANT

    WOMANCHILDMACK AVENUE RECORDS

When Ccile McLorin Salvant arrived at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC to compete in the finals of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, she was not only the youngest finalist, but also a mystery woman with the most unusual background of any of the participants. When she walked away with first place in the jazz worlds most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her Mack Avenue Records debut, WomanChild.

On the album, her repertoire ranges from the 19th century ballad John Henry, refreshed in a spirited up-to- date arrangement, to McLorin Salvants own 21st century waltz Le Front Cach Sur Tes Genoux which draws on a poem by Haitian writer Ida Salomon Faubert for its lyric. She is joined by a world class band who share her concern for creating jazz of today by drawing on vibrant traditions of the past: pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Rodney Whitaker (both of whom are Mack Avenue label mates), guitarist James Chirillo and master drummer Herlin Riley. The old and new rub shoulders throughout this album, but this singers attitude is neither beholden to the past nor trying to anticipate the trends of the future. Her captivating singing is immersed in the immediacy of the present moment. So much so, that those who have seen McLorin Salvant in concert marvel at how she radiates the confidence and poise of a mature artist even though she is just at the dawn of her own career. McLorin Salvant may have the deepest roots of any singer of her generation. She knows the sounds and styles of modern jazz but also possesses complete command of the classic blues and early American vocal tradition. She has studied the entire recorded legacy of the great Bessie Smith (1894-1937), often called the Empress of the Blues, and also has deep familiarity with Valaida Snow, Bert Williams and other early masters of American music. For her, these musicians are exponents of living traditions that she has drawn into the orbit of her own work.

On WomanChild, McLorin Salvant gives music lovers the chance to hear why the illustrious judges at the Monk Competition gave her top honors. McLorin Salvant is still a bit of a mystery, but she will hardly be a secret any longer.

  • BE MY MONSTER LOVEnew release sneakpeek

Grammy Award-winner David Murray is considered by many to be among the greatest and most versatile saxophonists, composers and bandleaders this country has produced. Having risen to prominence in the downtown jazz loft scene in 1970s New York, co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet, and gone on to create a vast and stunningly broad variety of music, Murray moved to Europe in 1996. Over the past few years, however, Murray has made a triumphant homecoming: He signed to the NYC-based Motma Music, released the celebrated David Murray Cuban Ensemble Plays Nat King Cole En Espaol, and toured the country, with various bands, to much acclaim. Now he has formed a new quartet of American players, the David Murray Infinity Quartet, whose name harkens back to Murrays formative days in New York, when he and his Pomona College friend Stanley Crouch operated the Studio Infinity loft. Motma will release the new bands soulful debut, Be My Monster Love, on June 11.

Be My Monster Love is Murrays first quartet album in six years. In addition to Murray on tenor sax, the band consists of fellow Motma artist Marc Cary on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. Bobby Bradford, renowned trumpeter and Murrays former teacher at Pomona College, joins the quartet for The Graduate.

Available Everywhere JUNE 11, 2013MOTEMA MUSIC

  • In Murrays four-decade career of prolific output, Be My Monster Love is among his most innovative and fully developed works. In addition to introducing a new band and featuring two exceptional singers, the album includes contributions by three distinguished writers. Instead of liner notes, the package includes A Dangerous Kind of Love, a short story by the novelist Robert Wilson, winner of the CWA Gold Dagger Award, Britains most prestigious crime fiction honor; the story is inspired by the haunting imagery of the title track, whose lyrics, along with those of two songs sung by Porter, were penned by Ishmael Reed. Wilson says of the leading track: David Murrays Be My Monster Love is an eclectic mix of old memories, strange dreams, and powerful reflections.

The album also features two noteworthy vocalists. Platinum-selling Grammy Award-winner Macy Gray sings the title track, continuing a relationship that began when Murray and Gray worked together in Questloves Afro Picks project, in which Murray was arranger, bandleader and player and Gray was a featured vocalist. The album also prominently features the twice-Grammy Award-nominated soul/jazz sensation Gregory Porter, also a Motma artist, who performed live with Murrays Cuban Ensemble and was part of the most recent iteration of Tongues on Fire, a tribute to the Black Panthers that Murray wrote for the Last Poets.

    Jazz Jam Sessions

ChicagoA jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public.

Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

    2013

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Andersons band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival 34 years after he first played this event encompasses the festivals entire history.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

  • The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. The PHJB began touring in 1963 and for many years there were several bands successfully touring under the name Preservation Hall. Many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band's history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day Wendell and John Brunious.

  • The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Bensons career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. Its a very simple equation, the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. In the end, its about the songs and the stories. Thats what keeps the music fresh for me. Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade. Even so, James says, I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
