The Loyola University Maryland women’s volleyball team has only four matches left during the regular-season before competes at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., November 18-20. The Greyhounds will compete Friday against Iona at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday against Fairfield at 2 p.m.

Scouting IonaThe Gaels are 15-9 and 9-5 in conference. They defeated Canisius, 3-0, and lost to Niagara, 3-2, at home last weekend. Iona defeated the Greyhounds earlier this season, 3-2, in Reitz Arena. The Gaels have six seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen. They are led by three players who have over 200 kills: Theresa Harvey (264), Colleen Genett (236) and Alicja Pawelec (246). Alyssa Erickson has 701 assists. and leading the defense is Allison Nieters with 505 digs.

Scouting FairfieldFairfield has three seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen on its team. They are 10-16 and 9-5 in the conference and led by Hailiani Pokipala who has 239 kills and Brianna Dixion with 232 kills. Rachel Romasky has 861 assists and leading the defense is Kara Reis who has 283 digs. The Greyhounds lost to Fairfield earlier this season, 3-0, at home. Fairfield will compete at Manhattan before hosting the Greyhounds.

Five-Match Winning StreakThe Greyhounds have won their last five matches, three coming at home and two on the road. It all started when Loyola defeated Canisius at home, 3-0. The Greyhounds then went on the road to beat Marist, 3-0, and Siena, 3-0. The next weekend at home, they defeated Rider, 3-0, and beat Saint Peter’s, 3-1. Since 2003, the Greyhounds have never won five conference matches in a row.

Breaking RecordsSenior Nina Camaioni broke the school’s career kills record, set by Becky Corb from 2002-2005, on October 17. Camaioni has 1,703 kills so far this season eclipsing Corb’s old mark of 1,629. She holds the season school record with 539 kills, set last year. She also holds the school record for digs in a match with 36 set in 2007. Camaioni ranks second in the MAAC in conference matches with a 4.51 average a set kills.

Digging Away In 28 matches so far this season, Brittany Born has a total of 377 digs, averaging 3.77 digs per set. So far in her four-year career, Born has recorded 1,957 digs. She holds the school’s career record in digs, and it continues to grow. She also holds the school record in digs in a season with 626, set in 2007. In the conference, Born ranks ninth in average digs a set with 3.70.

Born to AssistThrough the first 28 matches of 2010, Aubrey Kirven has 988 assists, an average of 9.78 assists per set to rank second in the conference. She joins the 2,000 assists club and has a total of 2,190 assists in less than two full years at Loyola; last season, Kirven had 1,202 assists. Kim Colavito holds the school record for career assists with 3,763 assists from 1990-1993. Kirven ranks second in the MAAC conference matches with a 9.98 assists a set.

Defeats Saint Peter’sLoyola University Maryland women’s volleyball team scored four-straight points after going down 15-10 in the fourth set to Saint Peter’s College, getting back on track in the eventual deciding game of a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-23) Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory on Halloween afternoon in Reitz Arena. Nina Camaioni finished with a match-high 21 kills and team-best 23 digs. Nicole Sarby added 14 kills, while Katie Dircks had 11 kills, 21 digs and five aces.

Aubrey Kirven dished out 44 assists and had 16 digs. She added to the Loyola attack with a career-high seven kills on just 11 swings, a .636 clip. Loyola tallied 12 aces and the Greyhounds hit .209 as a team.

Sweep RiderAn Alumni Day crowd enjoyed the Loyola University Maryland women’s volleyball team capturing its fourth straight victory Saturday afternoon over Rider in Reitz Arena, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10). The Greyhounds are on a four match winning streak with all four matches coming via 3-0 sweeps.

Since 2003, Loyola has only won three match sweeps coming in 2007. Leading the way for the Greyhounds was senior Nina Camaioni who recorded 13 kills and four digs. She had a .355 hitting percentage for the match. Freshman Jac Bullock recorded eight kills with no errors to have a .800 hitting percentage. Sophomore Aubrey Kirven added 29 assists and Brittany Born led the defense with nine digs. The Greyhounds had 12 serving errors for the match, five coming from sophomore Taylor Koncelik.

Camaioni Named MAAC Co-Preseason Player of the YearSenior Nina Camaioni was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Preseason Player of the Year. This was the first Preseason Player of the Year selection and second Preseason All-MAAC Team honors for Camaioni. She was named to the All-MAAC First team after the end last season.

Nina Camaioni MAAC Offensive Player of the WeekCamaioni played in two matches for the week of October 25th and helped Loyola to a couple of 3-0 wins to earn MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. She had a total of 33 kills with a .312 hitting percentage for the two matches. She also had two serving aces, 22 digs and four blocks. Against Marist, she recorded a double-double with 16 kills and a .317 hitting percentage for the match. She also recorded 12 digs for the match and had three blocks, one being a solo block. Versus Siena, Camaioni had another double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. She had a .308 hitting percentage for the match with two serving aces and a block. The Greyhounds have never defeated the Saints twice in one season since the MAAC went to playing all nine teams twice in 2005.

Nicole Sarby MAAC Rookie of the WeekSarby played in four matches during the week of September 6 and had 32 kills for a .291 hitting percentage. She also added 30 digs, for an average of 2.14 per set, and four assists. Sarby recorded six blocks during the week, including one solo block. Her best match came against Delaware State, where she had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, both career highs. She also had a career high in blocks with five.

Camaioni Named Candidate For Lowe’s Senior CLASS AwardSenior outside hitter Nina Camaioni has been named a candidate for the inaugural Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Camaioni is one of 30 candidates for the nationwide award that honors senior student-athletes who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Camaioni did not make the final round.

Off the court, Camaioni’s honors shine just as bright. She has maintained a 3.83 grade point average during her first three years as a Greyhound, and she was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District II Second Team for her academic excellence. Camaioni is on pace to graduate in May with her degree in global studies, an interdisciplinary major that combines studies of history, economics, sociology and political science.
