This week’s English requires you to use all of the skills you
have learnt from week 3 lessons. We will be looking at
character description, setting description and you will all need
your imaginations! I know from previous lessons that you are
all super at writing great stories. If you can remember the
greek myths you wrote about King Midas a while ago. this
week’s learning is something similar! How exciting!
Have a look at these images, you are
going to watch a video shortly but
first….What do you think this video is
about? Note down some ideas and
description. What can you see? Make a
prediction now!
Now you have made your
prediction and made a note of the
things you can see, go ahead and
watch the video.
https://www.literacyshed.com/dreamgiver.html
Here is the link! When you
click on the video it goes black
and then starts playing (takes
a few seconds)
Now you have watched the video there
are a few things you may not have
known. Here is the summary and ‘blurb’
for the video Silently, a group of orphans sleep in an orphanage.
Quietly, the window shutters open and in crawls a mysterious creature.
He doesn't look too friendly at first but we soon see what his plan is.
This is the Dreamgiver and by cracking his dream eggs he makes sure the children’s nights are
pleasurable. He creates the dreams by cracking the eggs onto stories, posters and ballet shoes. But
what will happen if an egg is accidentally spilt on something not so nice? Well that is what
happens.....
A 'dream egg' is knocked off the bed and onto a 'shadow serpent,' this is surely going to turn into a
nightmare for one of the unlucky children.
Was your prediction correct?
Were your predictions
correct? Which bits?
If you could add
something to the short film
what would you add? You
may have wanted to take
something away?
Were your predictions
wrong?
Now do your own
reflection, I have given
you some ideas to help get
you started!I predicted that the
character was the tooth
fairy as I saw his wings.
I predicted that the
creature was
delivering something,
I could see this on
one of the images.
At the start, I think I
would add snow to
make it feel more like a
dream.
Lesson 2
Dreams
What are dreams?
Dreams are basically stories and
images that our mind creates while
we sleep. They can be vivid. They
can make you feel happy, sad, or
scared. ... Dreams can happen at
any time during sleep.
Now that you know about the film being about
dreams, the next few lessons for English we are
going to look at dreams, create our own, discuss
ideas, create great description and use your
amazing vocabulary skills to help!
Have a think about a dream
you’ve recently had,
whether it made you sad,
happy or scared? What
happened?
Roald Dahl’s story the BFG is based on a giant
who collects children’s dreams (phizzwizards).
Some of you may have seen the film. Your task
now is to look at the images and come up with
some vocabulary to use for description. We are
going to need nouns, adjectives, verbs & adverbs.
Vocabulary
Nouns Adjectives Verbs Adverbs
Now you’ve noted down some
vocabulary to describe the
images above make a tree map. You can draw one out or print
this one for a template.

Lesson 3
Improving our writing with
our amazing vocabulary!Today’s English job requires
you to look at a piece of
story writing. This is in the
BFG-written by Roald Dahl.
Read the extract from the
text and then using your
vocabulary from the last two
lessons improve this piece of
writing.
Don’t forget, you can share
your work with your
teachers on the google drive,
or email the office, we love
to see your work!
Think about our lessons in
English where we have
written about a scene or a
character….
What do I need to include to
make my writing piece
AMAZING.
Draw the reader in, keep the
reader's interest. Good
humour sometimes helps,
what other things can you
think of?
Feelings?
What would that look like?
Fronted adverbials?
Realistic?
Fantasy?
Remember from
previous English
lessons, How is the
character feeling?
Here are some ideas to help you
improve the text.
Shining
Remember fronted adverbials
help you.
Your list of adverbs from
yesterday's lesson,may help
you. “Shining brightly”
What other noises are
missing? How can you
make this more exciting?
How would it feel to be
like Sophie?
This is good.. What is this an
example of?
Behind the curtain that was rippling
in the wind like a ghost in the night.
(Make this more interesting)
Lesson 4
Creating your own dream jarToday’s English lesson is a bit more FUN!
Using all of the skills you have learnt in
other English lessons, your job is to make
your very own dream jar. You can choose
whatever characters you would like to
feature in your dream. These could be
made up, real or even animals.
Remember to include:
Setting description
Feelings
Humour (if needed)
Interesting and exciting vocab
Speech (if needed)
Step 1- make a plan first (we always plan first in
lessons)
Step 2- Edit your work, you could share on the google
drive with your teachers if you wanted feedback on how
you could improve your work.
Step 3- Write your dream onto your jar
Step 4- Decorate your jar, make it stand out!
Where does this dream
take place?
Do I start off with not
being able to fall
asleep?
Being frightened or
happy?
What is happening
around me, are there
clouds or objects in the
setting?
What are the colours?
Who are the characters in
my dream?
Are they people or
animals?
Are they made up
creatures?
What do they look like?
What is there purpose?
Do they bring joy?
Do they stay in your
dream the whole time?
Is there a problem?
What is happening in
your dream?
Is there a solution, or do
you wake up before the
solution?
Is this something you
have dreamt about
before?
What things go wrong?
Is there anything unusual,
could be something
unexpected (a flying
giraffe?
Remember to use
these boxes to jot
down ideas, you
don’t need to write
your whole plan in
here. Key vocab,
useful reminders etc.
This plan is going to
be needed for next
week’s learning.
These ideas will help
write a story next
week.
Here are some templates, you can
choose to print them to use or you
could even sketch your own.
All of your teachers would love to
see your work. You can share it
with us on the drive or email the
Year 4 email.
We hope you have fun with this
Team 4!
Lesson 5
Describing the characters in our
dream jar Today’s lesson is all about character
description. At school, we have done
this a few times so you should have
amazing ideas for this!
You need to write a short character
description for the people, animals,
creatures etc you have put in your
dream jar. It’s up to you how many
descriptions you are going to do but
once again we would love to see
your work. Don’t forget you can
share your work on the google drive.
Enjoy Team 4!
First step, draw or print a
picture of your dream
character. Label using
amazing vocabulary.
Try and use expanded
noun phrases!
How do they smell and
sound?
Describe using show not
tell.
Think of synonyms
(this means words that
are similar that mean
the same thing)
Timid, shy, nervous.
Legs as long as
ladders.
Use metaphors
they make your
character
description more
interesting.
The patches
on the
giraffe are
gold and
glisten in the
beating,
African
sunshine.
Her happy tail
swoops like an artist's
paintbrush.
(similes help to
personify)
Here are some examples to help you!
Using your ideas that you noted down, now your job
is to write a paragraph describing your character.
Remember to use punctuation, similes and metaphors
if you can, expanded noun phrases and remember to
keep the reader interested.
Here is an example of what yours could look or sound
like!
Enjoy team year 4!
The midday sun was beaming down
on the African Plains as Jemima the
Giraffe stumbled on her legs that
were as long as ladders. On the
peach coloured savannah lay a
young girl, sleeping like a baby.
Jemima’s tail swooped in the air
like an artist's paintbrush to a
canvas. She stopped and had to
think quickly to help the young,
sleeping girl. Jemima was very
timid and nervous and this was
going to be hard for her. She lifted
one golden hoof and tapped the girl
softly and gracefully to wake her.
