FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACTS: HARVEY GREENE/ September 18, 2006 NEAL GULKIS/ MICHAEL PEHANICH PHONE: (954) 452-7010 The Miami Dolphins will play their second consecutive home contest this Sunday when they host the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff from Dolphin Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET), in what will mark the four straight year that these teams have met in the regular season. It also will be the Dolphins’ final home game for nearly a month. This week, both the Dolphins and Titans will be seeking to secure their initial victories of 2006. Both teams have opened the season with two straight losses, putting both in a predicament that neither is particularly familiar with. Last Sunday, the Dolphins were beset by a vibrant Buffalo team that was buoyed by several big plays, including a blocked punt and an interception deep in its own territory, which led to three Bills points and potentially denied the Dolphins the opportunity to cross the goal line, respectively. The Bills also received a boost from its defense, which registered seven sacks, the most against the Dolphins in nearly seven years. While the Dolphins proved in their opener that they could hang with the defending champion Steelers until the very end – and even held a lead late in the game – last week against the Bills they trailed 16-0 entering the final frame and did not get on the scoreboard until there were less than two minutes to play. Ronnie Brown provided one of the few bright spots for the Dolphins as he rushed for a team-high 70 yards on 15 carries, and also caught a team-best six passes for 52 yards. The Dolphins’ defense held the Bills to just 171 yards of total offense and one touchdown. For the Dolphins, 0-2 is a record that they are not accustomed to having, as this is just the third time since 1970 that they have owned this mark. This week against the Titans, they would certainly like to provide the Fin faithful with a triumph before heading on the road for three consecutive road contests. Dolphins-Titans: 2006 Regular Season Game No. 3 Page 2

The Titans are 0-2 on the year following a 40-7 loss to the Chargers in San Diego last Sunday. It is just the second time since Jeff Fisher took over as head coach on a full-time basis in 1995 that the team has started the season 0-2. Rookie quarterback Vince Young, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, looks to be the cornerstone around which Tennessee builds its team.

The Dolphins hold a 16-13 advantage in the all-time regular season series with the Titans. The Dolphins are 9-6 in contests decided in Miami, including a 4-2 mark at Dolphin Stadium. The Dolphins captured the lone postseason matchup between these teams. The Dolphins are 4-2 against the Titans organization since it moved to Tennessee.

Sunday’s game will be televised by CBS-TV and a regional network of affiliates with Kevin Harlan calling the play-by-play and Rich Gannon adding the analysis. If the game is sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff (Thurs., 1:00 p.m.), it would be shown in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area on WFOR-TV (CBS 4) and in West Palm Beach on WPEC-TV (Channel 12). As of Monday afternoon, approximately 2,500 tickets remained. The contest will air on the Dolphins flagship, 790 The Ticket, and a network of affiliates throughout Florida. A trio of former Dolphins will bring the action to all Dol-Fans. Former wide receiver Jimmy Cefalo calls the game action, while

former tight end Joe Rose adds the commentary. Former wide receiver Nat Moore reports from the sidelines. The game will be simulcast on the FM dial on WBGG/Big 106 (105.9). 790’s Jon “Stugotz” Weiner and former Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad anchor the four-hour pre-game show. Jason Jackson and former Dolphins fullback Keith Byars have post-game responsibilities. Barry Buetel contributes to both the pre-game show and the halftime report on the flagship. The game also will air on the Spanish home of the Dolphins, WSUA (Radio Caracol, 1260 AM) with Roly Martin and Raul Striker, Jr. in the broadcast booth.

The Titans are 0-2 on the season following a 40-7 loss last Sunday the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. QB Kerry Collins has completed 23 of 57 passes for 280 yards with no TDs and four INTs while rookie QB Vince Young has hit on 10 of 23

for 133 yards with one TD and an INT. WR Drew Bennett is the team’s leading receiver with 11 receptions for 151 yards and a TD. RB Chris Brown has rushed for a team-best 73 yards on 22 carries.

Dolphins-Titans: 2006 Regular Season Game No. 3 Page 3

NICK SABAN became the sixth head coach in franchise history when he agreed in principle on December 25, 2004 to take over this spot and officially signed a five-year contract through 2009 on December 27, 2004. Saban had been a college head coach for the previous 11 seasons, and during that time, he never had a losing season. In fact, in his 26 years at the college level, he was a part of 23 winning teams.

He has guided the Dolphins to a record of 9-9 in his two seasons at the helm. In Saban’s first year with the Dolphins, he led the team to a record of 9-7 as they won their final six contests, the franchise’s longest winning streak to end a regular season since 1985 when the team won their last seven. This five-game turnaround from 2004 tied for the third-largest in the NFL last year and the overall record tied for the fourth-best among coaches since 1980 in their first year after making the jump immediately from the college ranks to the pro level. Saban came to the Dolphins after spending the previous five years guiding the fortunes of the

program at Louisiana State University. During Saban’s tenure with the Tigers, he led the school to a composite record of 48-16, which included a 13-1 mark in 2003 when LSU claimed the national championship. He followed that up with a 9-3 record in 2004, culminating with a berth in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando against Iowa. Saban’s 48 victories over a five-year span from 2000-04 were the third-most victories among Division I-A collegiate head coaches during this time. LSU posted at least eight wins in each of his five seasons and compiled a pair of SEC titles. Prior to arriving in Baton Rouge, Saban served as head coach at Michigan State from 1995-99. This marked his second stint at the East Lansing school, as he also spent 1983-87 as the Spartans’ defensive coordinator/secondary coach. In his final year as head coach there, the Spartans posted a record of 10-2 as they finished in a tie for second in the Big Ten by compiling wins in each of their last three games, two of which were against Top 20 teams Ohio State and Penn State. The Spartans’

GRADUATION RATES After spending the 2000-04 seasons as the head coach at LSU, Nick Saban made the jump to the NFL

last year as he took over the helm of the Miami Dolphins. Since 1980, Saban became the 18th head coach to make the jump immediately from the college level to the NFL, and the first since 2002 when Florida’s Steve Spurrier left to take over the reigns of the Washington Redskins. The 9-7 record to which Saban led the Dolphins is tied for the fourth-best among these 18 head coaches, and the best since Steve Mariucci guided the 49ers to a 13-3 mark in 1997.

performances that year landed them a spot in the Citrus Bowl, the school’s fourth postseason appearance in Saban’s five years at the helm. Prior to his arrival, Michigan State had been to just one bowl game in the previous four years. Saban’s first head coaching position came at the University of Toledo in 1990, as he guided the Rockets to a record of 9-2 that year, finishing as co-champions of the Mid-American Conference. Saban is no stranger to the National Football League, having served as an assistant with both the Houston Oilers (1988-89) and the Cleveland Browns (1991-94). As secondary coach with the Oilers, where he worked under Jerry Glanville, Houston tied for fourth in the AFC in 1988 with 21 interceptions, while they tied for second in the conference in 1989 with 22 thefts. Following his one-year stint at Toledo, he took over as defensive coordinator with the Browns in 1991 under Bill Belichick, and served the next four years in that post (1991-94). He took over a defensive unit that had yielded 462 points in the year prior to his arrival, and in his final year with

the Browns, the team allowed an NFL-low 202 points and achieved a No. 7 overall defensive ranking in the NFL, as four members of the unit were selected for the Pro Bowl. In each of Saban’s four years guiding that defense, they never permitted an average of more than 19.2 points per game. Saban grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia and went on to letter three years as a defensive back at Kent State, from 1970-72, where he also played shortstop for the school’s baseball team. Upon graduating with a degree in business from Kent State in 1973, he served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater for two years (1973-74). He earned his master’s in sports administration in 1975, and was named linebackers coach at Kent State that same year. After two years in that post, he moved on to Syracuse for one year (1977) as outside linebackers coach. That was followed by two-year stints at West Virginia (1978-79) and Ohio State (1980-81), both as secondary coach. He then served one year in the same position at the U.S. Naval Academy before beginning his first stop at Michigan State.

JEFF FISHER is in his 12th full season as Tennessee’s head coach, during which time he has led the team to a regular season record of 97-87. His teams have gone 5-4 in the playoffs, giving him an overall record of 102-91. He is 2-5 in his head coaching career against the Dolphins. Fisher was elevated to Head Coach/defensive coordinator on November 4, 1994, with six games remaining in the ’94 season. He was named head coach on a permanent basis on January 5, 1995. In 1999, Fisher guided the Titans to a record of 13-3 as they went on to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XXXIV against St. Louis. He led Tennessee to an identical 13-3 record in 2000, as the club claimed its first AFC Central Division crown since 1993. Prior to taking over the head spot, Fisher had served as the club’s

defensive coordinator since the start of the ’94 season. Fisher started his NFL coaching career tutoring the defensive backs with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1986, and he remained in that spot for three years. In 1989, he was named the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, a post he held for the next two seasons. At the time in 1989, Fisher was the NFL’s youngest defensive coordinator at 31. A year as defensive backs coach with the Los Angeles Rams (1991) preceded a two-year stint as defensive backs coach with the San Francisco 49ers, from 1992-93. A seventh-round draft choice of Chicago in 1981, Fisher played five seasons as a defensive back and kick returner with the Bears (1981-85). Fisher was a four-year letterman at USC (1977-80).

MAKING A DIFFERENCE When first-year Head Coach Nick Saban guided the Dolphins to a record of 9-7 last year, it represented a five-game turnaround from 2004 when the Dolphins went 4-12. This marks the second-largest improvement in Dolphins history, trailing only the period from 1969 to 1970 when they went from 3-10-1 to 10-4, an improvement of 6.5 games. In fact, this five-game turnaround tied for the third-largest in the NFL from 2004.

Team Head Coach Difference 2005 Record 2004 Record 1. Chicago Lovie Smith +6 11-5 5-11 Tampa Bay Jon Gruden +6 11-5 5-11 3. Miami Nick Saban +5 9-7 4-12 N.Y. Giants Tom Coughlin +5 11-5 6-10 5. Carolina John Fox +4 11-5 7-9 Seattle Mike Holmgren +4 13-3 9-7

SABAN HOLDS SOME SENIORITY Despite the fact that he is only his second season with the Dolphins and his second as an NFL head

coach, Nick Saban is the second-most tenured head coach in the AFC East, trailing only New England’s Bill Belichick (2000-). In fact, of the Dolphins’ 16 regular season games in 2006, nine are against teams whose head coach is in his first season with that club.

Dolphins-Titans: 2006 Regular Season Game No. 3 Page 5

The Dolphins snapped a two-game losing streak to the Titans with a 24-10 victory on Christmas Eve last year in South Florida. The Titans took a 3-0 first-quarter lead on a Rob Bironas 24-yard field goal before the Dolphins tallied 24 of the game’s next 31 points. This included a pair of touchdown passes from Gus Frerotte to Chris Chambers, including an 11-yarder with 2:48 to play in the second quarter, giving Miami a 10-7 lead. Ricky Williams rushed for 172 yards (26 atts.), the most-ever by a Dolphin in this series. He capped the scoring with a 19-yard TD run with 1:48 remaining in the contest.

The last Titans win in this series took place in the 2004 season-opener, in a 17-7 decision on September 11 at Pro Player Stadium. In that game, Titans RB Chris Brown rushed for 100 yards on 16 attempts, with his entire total coming in the first half. The Dolphins amassed 263 yards of total offense, but committed three turnovers, all on interceptions, including a 37-yard return for a score by Lamont Thompson. Miami’s lone score of the day came on a 15-yard TD pass from A.J. Feeley to Randy McMichael with 3:22 remaining in the contest. The lone postseason contest between these clubs occurred in an AFC Wild Card game, on December 24, 1978, as the Oilers emerged with a 17-9 victory at the Orange Bowl. The Oilers outgained the Dolphins, 455-209 in the game, including 165 on the ground.

The Titans have held the Dolphins to less than 100 yards rushing as a team in nine of the last ten games of this series. The only exception was last year’s matchup when they compiled 192 yards in a

24-10 win… Tennessee has rushed for more than 100 yards in four of the last five outings against Miami. The only exception to this was in last year’s contest when they amassed 92 yards… The Titans have registered seven interceptions against the Dolphins over the last three meetings… Dolphins

WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS WEEK

DOLPHINS AGAINST ROOKIE QUARTERBACKS When the Dolphins take on the Titans this Sunday they could be facing a starting rookie quarterback for the first time since 2004, in Vince Young, the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Since 1990, the Dolphins have gone up against a rookie starting quarterback nine previous times (7 QBs – Manning and Bledsoe twice each), and the Dolphins have won seven of those games. The last time they faced a rookie starter was on December 26, 2004 when they took on a Cleveland team led by Luke McCown, as the Dolphins recorded a 10-7 victory. If Young opens the game, it would be the third time since 1990 that a rookie quarterback has made his first NFL start against the Dolphins. The following is a closer look at the games since 1990 in which a rookie quarterback has started against the Dolphins. Date Opponent Opposing QB Stats Result 12/30/90 vs. Indianapolis Jeff George 30-18-2, 222 yards, 2 TDs Dolphins 23, Colts 17 11/21/93 vs. New England Drew Bledsoe 42-23-1, 275 yards, 1 TD Dolphins 17, Patriots 13 1/2/94 at New England Drew Bledsoe 43-27-0, 329 yards, 4 TDs Patriots 33, Dolphins 27 (OT) 9/6/98* at Indianapolis Peyton Manning 37-21-3, 302 yards, 1 TD Dolphins 24, Colts 15 11/8/98 vs. Indianapolis Peyton Manning 42-22-2, 140 yards, 1 TD Dolphins 27, Colts 14 11/4/01 vs. Carolina Chris Weinke 21-9-1, 158 yards, 0 TDs Dolphins 23, Panthers 6 10/12/03 at Jacksonville Byron Leftwich 42-24-3, 256 yards, 0 TDs Dolphins 24, Jaguars 10 9/26/04* vs. Pittsburgh Ben Roethlisberger 22-12-1, 163 yards, 1 TD Steelers 13, Dolphins 3 12/26/04 vs. Cleveland Luke McCown 16-9-2, 161 yards, 1 TD Dolphins 10, Browns 7 *Indicates first NFL start.

SEPTEMBER MORN Of the 28 previous regular season games between the Dolphins and the Titans/Oilers, nine have been played in the month of September, including two of the last three and three of the last five (not including 2006). Of those nine, the Dolphins have won five.

The Dolphins will take to the road when they face the Houston Texans next Sunday. Kickoff from Reliant Stadium is set for 12:00 noon (CT), 1:00 p.m. (ET).

The Bills play their second straight home game as they host the Minnesota Vikings. Game time from Ralph Wilson Stadium is at 1:00 p.m. (ET).

The Dolphins dropped their first two games for just the third time since 1970 as they were defeated by the Buffalo Bills, 16-6 last Sunday at Dolphin Stadium. The Bills took a 3-0 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter on a 33-yard field goal by Rian Lindell, which capped a 10-play, 49-yard drive that consumed 5:46 of the clock. All of the 49 yards on the drive came on the ground, including 45 by Willis McGahee. Miami had its first scoring opportunity less than three minutes into the second quarter, but Olindo Mare’s 55-yard field goal attempt missed wide right. The Dolphins were inside the Bills’ 20 with a minute remaining in the first half before Angelo Crowell intercepted a Daunte Culpepper pass at the Bills’ 7 to end the threat. The Bills took the ball on the opening series of the second half and moved 72 yards in eight

plays, ending with a four-yard TD pass from J.P. Losman to Josh Reed, one play after a 50-yard pass interference penalty on the Dolphins. Buffalo scored for the second time in as many second half possessions when Lindell connected on a 45-yard field goal, culminating an eight-play, 29-yard drive. Lindell tacked on a 43-yard field goal with 48 seconds left in the third quarter, four plays after Coy Wire blocked a Donnie Jones punt and André Davis recovered at the Dolphins’ 17. Miami’s lone score of the day came on a 23-yard TD pass from Culpepper to Chris Chambers with 1:54 to play in the game, capping an 11-play, 93-yard drive. The pass for the two-point try was off the mark. For the Dolphins, Ronnie Brown finished the game with 70 yards rushing on 15 attempts and six receptions for 52 yards.

Head Coach Nick Saban on what the coaching staff will do to try to get the Dolphins heading the right direction – “We’re going to focus as a staff to do a better job in terms of preparing players, and get the players prepared better, fix the problems that we have, not being concerned about where we are right now, but how we’ve got to get to where we need to be so that we start playing winning football. Obviously we have some players on our team that we need to do a better job with getting involved in what we’re doing.” Head Coach Nick Saban on the things the Dolphins need to do better – “There’s a lot that we need to improve on. I believe in this team, I believe in the players that we have, and I believe that we can play a lot better football than [what] we’re playing. That’s certainly going to be the goal and objective and that’s what we’re going to try to get done. It still comes down to every individual player out there doing his job on every play. I don’t care if you’re playing left tackle, right tackle, right corner, left

corner, it doesn’t matter. Right now we’re not getting that. Everybody’s responsible. Beginning with me, everybody’s responsible, and everybody has to take responsibility for it. I can’t explain it better than that.” Head Coach Nick Saban on the crowd’s reaction to his team’s performance in its home opener – “I don’t think anybody was pleased with their performance - I’m talking about players. I don’t think anybody was pleased with the way we played in this game or in the first half. Obviously, I would like to see our crowd be supportive. No one likes to get booed. I don’t think players like to get booed. I think it helps the other team feel confidence when you boo your own players. But I also think that it’s our responsibility and my responsibility to have us play better in the game as well. We would hope that we can play better so that we don’t get booed, but we don’t like getting booed either. I don’t think anybody does and I think it helps the other team.”

LAST WEEK’S GAME

MAKING A POINT The Dolphins and Titans have met seven times since the NFL first adopted the two-point conversion in 1994. Over that time, neither team has had a two-point try. In fact, the only two point attempt in this series occurred when these clubs were AFL counterparts. That happened on December 18, 1966 at the Orange Bowl when George Wilson, Jr. connected with Billy Joe following a 27-yard TD pass from John Stofa to Joe Auer in the second quarter of a game the Dolphins went on to win, 29-28.

Head Coach Nick Saban on building a successful team – “We are going to have to earn it in terms of proving that we can play with the kind of consistency we need to play with for 60 minutes in the game, to finish the game like we need to, to have success and play winning football. It takes a lot of trust and respect for each other and teamwork to do it. It takes people being responsible for their own self-determination. It takes a lot of people that are willing to make a commitment to try to dominate and do their job every play in the game. It takes a lot of guys to affect their teammates in a positive way so that we have the best chance to build the kind of team chemistry we need to play winning football and be successful. That is what we are focused on.” Head Coach Nick Saban on the play of DE Jason Taylor in the 3-4 defense – “I think part of the reason we considered doing it this way when we came here was because of Jason Taylor. He’s certainly played better and more effectively than I even anticipated or that we anticipated that he might. He’s gotten more comfortable in the coverage part of it, which he doesn’t have to do a lot. It’s certainly an advantage to us in that people have to be aware of where he is, and it does help the effectiveness of some of the other players in terms of what we can do. I think in nickel situations it’s also a big advantage for us to have a rusher of his impact, who we can move around, who’s athletic and that others wonder if we’re going to rush or drop. It’s been a good thing for us.” Head Coach Nick Saban on why he thinks so many safeties were taken in the first round of the draft this year and if there is an added importance on the safety position – “I think that there are some positions that you would probably look at as being most critical to wanting to take. The obvious ones are the guys that are the hardest to find - quarterbacks, probably a pass rusher on defense. Some people would put corners in that category. Some people even put really good offensive left tackles in that category. Some people put difference-making receivers in that category, people who can score points or affect the scoreboard. Typically, I don’t think people would put safeties in that category, but I think there is more and more of an impact being made by safeties in the league. Guys like [Troy Polamalu], who is a significant player for them, who plays many roles. He didn’t play a whole lot his first year, but has become a really, really effective player. There are some other guys around the league that have done the same kinds of things. Once you get to a certain point in the draft, some of those other guys aren’t available. I think this was a pretty good year for that position in the draft. I don’t know if that is going to be a trend that continues unless the guy is a certain kind of player. The other thing that probably contributes to that a little bit is that in the old days everybody had two backs in the backfield. It was pretty hard to get a safety isolated in coverage. If you are in regular - and all these people do all these spread-out formations and all of them go to empty and all that - one of your safeties is going to get matched up on the next best receiver almost all the time. If you have a guy that has some corner-type coverage skills, but size, speed and toughness to play safety, that is a real advantage for you. I think that is a real advantage for you. It eventually, just like 43 (Troy Polamalu) does for Pittsburgh, plays multiple roles in sub. He plays star.

He plays dime. He plays all over the place. He blitzes. I think if a guy is a certain kind of guy, it certainly makes it worthwhile to be interested in that type.” Head Coach Nick Saban on what the changes were that allowed Chris Chambers to be more successful toward the end of last season – “I just think as he got more comfortable in the offense and we got more comfortable as a team, he had more opportunities to make plays, and when he started making plays, I think he got more confident. I don’t really think he stepped it up a notch. I just think he got more confident in what he was doing and just played more efficiently and effectively and ended up making a lot more plays because of it. I think the confidence the entire offensive team gained in the second half of the season probably contributed to that.” Head Coach Nick Saban on if the coaching staff’s philosophy is different coaching a team that was 9-7 the previous season as compared to 4-12 – “I don’t quite look at it that way. I think that our goal is to get as many players having the attitude of a champion, being a champion; doing the things you need to do. The more guys we have on this team that play with that character and that attitude and all that kind of stuff on a consistent basis, the better chance we’re going to have to win a championship. So, we focus on guys being champions. That doesn’t really change from what you did last year. This is a new year and a new challenge. Obviously, I think there were some lessons learned last year about what it takes to do that. The big thing I try to emphasize with the players is, it’s kind of human nature in a way for people to wait until they create an adverse circumstance for themselves before they’re willing to respond to it the way they should. People want to lose weight. They know the right things to eat. They even know how they should do it, but yet they don’t do it. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to. They get to a point where they finally say, ‘I’m going to do this.’ Well, you never needed to get that way to start with if you had just done it from the beginning. Last year it took awhile before we got there, so the thing we try to emphasize to our players is we don’t need something bad to happen to try to go and do stuff right. Let’s just do it right from the beginning. Let’s just get it right from the start and do it right everyday and make it a habit. That’s not easy to do, but that’s what we need to do. That’s what we need to develop. That’s how we have to play all the time.” Head Coach Nick Saban on being a disciple of Bill Belichick – “I’ve had an opportunity to have good mentors on several levels, whether it was George Perles at Michigan State, who was with Chuck Noll for years, who was kind of a Don Shula disciple, so all these things kind of tie together. Bill Belichick was obviously one of those good mentors that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. I think you learn good things and bad things from everybody that you work with. I certainly learned a lot of good things from Bill in terms of the systematic approach to defining things so that everybody in the organization understands what you want, what’s expected, and what they are looking for, not only in players but in how you want to get things done. I think that systematic approach is probably one of the biggest things that I was able to take away from him, being on Bill’s staff for four years.”

QB Daunte Culpepper on the Bills game and overcoming the adversity of an 0-2 start – “We just started out of rhythm. It’s tough, in this league, to have a start like that and come out and be able to capitalize other times when you want to, but at the same time you have to be able to do it. It’s not about how you start it, but how you finish it. It’s how you can overcome adversity. Right now, starting 0-2 we are in adverse times as a team. We have to step up and stop doing things that we are doing that put us in the position we’re in. We are going to stick together. When you go through tough times you have to pull together. This is definitely a time we have to pull together and stay strong. I am very sure and confident that there is going to be sunshine down the road. We just have to take it one game at a time. Everyday we go out to work, get better.” RB Ronnie Brown on what it will take for the Dolphins to have an explosive offense – “You know what, I’m not sure. We work hard during the week, but like I said, a good offense can’t go out there and and shoot itself in the foot like we did today. I think once we eliminate those mistakes we are going to take it to another level and be pretty good. We need to take a hard look at what we are doing, work hard and get it right.” DE Jason Taylor on if the defense played well enough to win the Bills game – “Well, it wasn’t good enough obviously. We needed [to give up] five points or less to win the game. That’s what it takes. That’s our job, and we have to do it. We’re going to win games as a team. We’re going to lose games as a team. It doesn’t matter how many points we put up, or how many points we give up. We have to find a way to come together and win football games. We didn’t do that for two weeks, so we’re 0-2, and we deserve to be 0-2. We’ve been through this before. We did it last year, and unfortunately, it took us 10 weeks to figure it out. When we figure it out, we’ll start winning. If we don’t, then we’ll keep on getting our [behinds] kicked, and we’ll sit over here with long faces until we get it. It’s nobody’s fault but our own.” LB Zach Thomas on the loss to Buffalo – “They got the big play when they needed it. Right when we started the second half they drove the field and scored. That’s on us. We can’t allow that. I’m

frustrated, but I know a lot of our guys have pride and we just have to put something together and play with some energy. Even if they take it to us, we’ve got to play with some energy and it all starts with me. I had nothing and I don’t understand it. It looked like they were having fun. It looks like we were out there working, like it’s a job. When they take it to you, it makes it a job and I don’t like that. Let’s get back and just have some fun, fly around and if they make a play, they make a play. But at least, have some energy. We’ll see how much pride we have next week.” DE Kevin Carter on coming back from adversity and the 0-2 start – “I think bad things are going to happen and good things are going to happen. I think you have to keep playing no matter what. The true mark of a good team is a team that can bounce back and be resilient when bad things happen. We’ve got to keep our standard of play up even though things aren’t going our way in the game. We’ve got to do a better job all around as a team.” CB Will Allen on the performance of the defense against Buffalo – “We have to come up with some big plays. Some kind of way, we have to come up with big plays. That’s why this is such a team game. One day, the defense is going to be playing well, and the offense is not going to be playing well. One day, the offense is going to be playing well, and the defense is not going to be playing well. We have to pick each other up, and it’s up to us to give our offense better field position to allow them to be able to do some things. In my eyes, that’s just how I feel. I’m out there on the field. It’s up to us to give them better field position.” LB Zach Thomas on how much more comfortable he feels in the defensive system this year – “I’m a lot more comfortable. I’m excited because I know things this year more than I knew last year. The more experience you have in a defense, the better you can be and the more plays you can make. You might not give up as many big plays, like we did last year, and put yourself in better positions. That’s the biggest key. I think my alignment last year was not as good because we were putting everything in. Now I’m learning how to get aligned right in certain formations. It’s the little things that can win games for you, not just for me but for everybody.”

With the win by the Bills, the Dolphins now lead the all-time regular season series by a 49-31-1 margin. Buffalo now has captured two of the last three and three of the last five matchups in Miami… The six points scored by the Dolphins represented their fewest in this series since November 2, 1997 when Buffalo earned a 9-6 victory in the first meeting of the year, in Buffalo… With the loss last week to the Bills, the Dolphins now are 31-9-1 in home openers in their history… The six points scored by the Dolphins marked their lowest total in a home opener. Their previous low came in a 17-7 loss to Tennessee on September 11, 2004… The

seven sacks registered by the Bills were their second-most ever in this series, trailing only the eight for which they accounted on November 16, 1969 in a 28-3 win in Buffalo… The loss last week snapped the Dolphins’ three game AFC East-winning streak… It marks just the second time since 1989 that the Dolphins have opened the season with two straight losses. It is only the third time that this has occurred since 1970… The Bills game marked the first time the Dolphins failed to come up with a turnover since October 21 of last year against Kansas City. In fact, the Dolphins now have dropped their last six decisions when they did not force a turnover… The 171 yards of total offense allowed by the Dolphins was the lowest figure since

His 122 total yards from scrimmage marked the second-highest total of his career, trailing only his 147 yards on September 25 of last year against Carolina (132 rushing, 15 receiving)… Donnie Jones’ 60-yard punt last week tied for the second-longest of his career, and it was his fourth career punt of 60 yards or longer. When he had a punt blocked by Buffalo’s Coy Wire, it marked the second time in his career that Jones had a punt blocked. His first came as a member of the Seattle Seahawks on October 24, 2004 at Arizona. It was the first time the Dolphins had a punt blocked by an opponent since the Raiders’ Terry Wooden blocked a Klaus Wilmsmeyer punt on December 6, 1998 in Oakland – a span of 116 regular season games… FB Darian Barnes’ reception was his first as a Dolphin and his first since the 2004 season as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The 13-yard reception was the second-longest of his career, trailing only his 14-yarder on December 26, 2004 against Washington… Olindo Mare’s miss wide right on a 55-yard field goal attempt marked the longest attempt of his career… With three sacks, Buffalo’s Ryan Denney became the first player to record three sacks against the Dolphins since Indianapolis’ Dwight Freeney had three on November 2, 2003… As a team, the Bills registered seven sacks, the most against the Dolphins since October 17, 1999 when the Patriots tallied nine in a 31-30 Dolphins win at Foxboro Stadium, marking a record for a Dolphins opponent.

When the Dolphins acquired quarterback Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings on March 15, 2006, not only did they get one of the top playmaking quarterbacks in the league, but they also got one of the most efficient. In fact, in his nine NFL seasons, Culpepper has compiled a career completion mark of 64.2 percent and a passer rating figure of 90.9. These totals rank fourth and fifth, respectively in NFL history.

Now in his sixth season with the Dolphins, wide receiver Chris Chambers has led the team in receiving yards each of his first five years, the

longest such streak in team history, while the five overall seasons is tied for the most. In 2005, he broke out to achieve the first Pro Bowl berth of his career when he caught 82 passes for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns, all career-high figures. Chambers now ranks in at least the top six in each of the team’s major receiving categories all-time.

In 2004, Randy McMichael established club single-season receiving records for Dolphins tight ends by catching 73 passes for 791 yards, in addition to hauling in four touchdown catches. He turned in another productive campaign last season, one in which he amassed 60 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Not only was he fourth among AFC tight ends in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns in 2005, but his reception total was the second-highest ever for a Dolphins tight end, while his five receiving scores tied for fourth. Now in just his fifth season, McMichael, a fourth-round draft choice of the team in 2001, is the team’s all-time leader among tight ends in receiving yards, while he is second in receptions and fifth in touchdown catches.

Dolphins wide receiver Marty Booker showed his propensity for the big play in 2005 when he caught 39 passes for 686 yards. His 17.6-yard average per reception not only led the team (5+ receptions), but it also marked a personal high. In addition, it was the best figure by a Dolphin since 2002 when James McKnight had an 18.2-yard norm. Part of what propelled Booker to that figure in 2005 was the fact that of his 39 receptions on the year, four went for 50 yards or longer, including a long of 60t, which is the fourth-best figure of his career. Those four 50+-yard receptions tied a Dolphins single-season record, also held by Mark Duper, who did it in 1984 and 1985. It also was the fourth-highest total in the NFL last season. He has one more from that distance this year, and his total of five over the last two seasons is tied for the third-highest figure in the NFL over this stretch.

A fifth-round draft choice of the team in

1996, linebacker Zach Thomas now is in his 11th season anchoring the middle of the Dolphins’ defense. During that time, he has become the heart and soul of a defense that has consistently ranked near the top of the NFL. In fact, he has reached the triple-digit mark in tackles in each of his previous ten seasons, and has led the team in this category on nine occasions. He has reached double-digit tackle totals in 29 of his last 33 games. In addition, he now has appeared in 149 regular season games in his career, all starts. His number of starts is the seventh-highest figure in Dolphins history, is second-most among defensive players and is the most among linebackers. His number of games played is third all-time among defensive players and the most among linebackers.

Since entering the NFL as a third-round draft choice of the Dolphins in 1997, defensive end Jason Taylor has etched his name into the team’s record book as the club’s all-time leading sacker. In his ten seasons, he has recorded 93.5 sacks, and with 6.5 more, he would become the 23rd NFL player to register 100 sacks since the statistic became official

in 1982. He also ranks among the league leaders in sacks both during this decade and among active NFL players.

Since entering the NFL as a first-round draft choice of the St. Louis Rams in 1995, Dolphins defensive end Kevin Carter has been known as one of the most steady and durable lineman in the NFL. His 94 career sacks rank as the third-highest total among active NFL players. In addition, he currently has a string of 178 straight games played and 85 consecutive starting assignments. He has never missed a game in his 12 NFL seasons, and the last time he did not start a game was on December 3, 2000, his final season as a Ram. His streak of 178 straight games played is tied for the fourth-longest current streak in the NFL, not including kickers and punters. Dolphins safety Yeremiah Bell, a sixth-round draft choice of the team in 2003, has played in 31 games with the team, none in a starting role. Nevertheless, he has come up with numerous big plays during his NFL stint, which did not begin until 2004 after spending all of his rookie season on the practice squad. Last year, he posted three sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. His sack total last year tied with Liffort Hobley (1990) and Jerry Wilson (1999) for the most-ever by a Dolphins defensive back in a season. Last week against Buffalo, not only did the former walk-on at Eastern Kentucky University lead the Dolphins’ special teams unit with a pair of stops, but he also recorded his fourth career sack and now stands within striking distance of the Dolphins all-time sack lead among defensive backs.

Now in his tenth season with the team, Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare is club’s all-time leader in many categories, including field goals (220) and points (953). In fact, with 47 more points, he would reach the 1,000 mark for his career. In 2005, he went over the 100-point plateau for the fifth time in his nine NFL seasons. In addition to his production, Mare has gained a reputation for his uncanny accuracy. His 81.78 career success rate on field goals is a club record, nearly three points better than Pete Stoyanovich, who stands in second spot at 79.3. Mare’s career field goal accuracy rate also is sixth in NFL annals. With 13 career field goals of 50 yards or longer in the regular season, Mare ranks second in Dolphins history in this category, trailing only Pete Stoyanovich.

In 2004, then-rookie Wes Welker made his mark on the Dolphins with his prowess as a retuner.

After going to camp with San Diego as an undrafted college free agent, Welker was signed by the Dolphins following the second game of the season. Overall, he returned 43 punts for a 10.8-yard average, and 61 kickoffs for a 23.2-yard average, including a 95-yarder for a touchdown – the first by a Dolphin since 1989. His punt return average ranked second in the AFC and fifth in the NFL, while his kickoff return average was seventh in the conference. Not only was he an integral part of the Dolphins’ return game again last year, but he also had a significant role on offense as the third receiver. In 2005, he caught 29 passes for 434 yards, including 12 receptions on third down and two more on fourth down. He seems to have picked up where he left off last season, as he now is tied for the team lead with nine receptions, and is second with 108 receiving yards. Last week against Buffalo, Welker established a career-high for receptions with five, surpassing his previous career best of four, which he had achieved three times previously, most recently in the opener at Pittsburgh. In the Steelers game, he had a 47-yard punt return, which tied for the second-longest of his career and set up the Dolphins’ first touchdown of the game. Last week against Buffalo, Welker moved past Fulton Walker as the Dolphins’ all-time leader for kickoff returns, and he could hold the mark for kickoff return yards as well fairly soon.

CENTURY CLUB By far, the most experienced unit on the Dolphins’ roster is the defensive line. This distinction was

solidified even further with the signing of 13-year veteran Dan Wilkinson in training camp. In fact, six of the team’s defensive linemen have appeared in at least 100 regular season games, with a seventh – David Bowens (91 games) – having the opportunity to join that group this year.

WR Chris Chambers’ seven-yard reception in the second quarter last week extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 49. His 23-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter was the 40th of his career… DE Kevin Carter now has played in 178 straight league games and started 85 in a row… DT Vonnie Holliday’s start last week was the 100th of his career during the regular season… T L.J. Shelton played in the 100th regular season game of his career last week against Buffalo… TE Randy McMichael started and played in his 66th straight

league game… LB Donnie Spragan now has appeared in 66 consecutive regular season contests… DE Jason Taylor now has started and played in 100 straight league games… DT Dan Wilkinson had his streak of having played in 49 consecutive league contests snapped last week when he was declared inactive. Prior to last week, the last time he missed a game was in 2002 as a member of the Washington Redskins when he spent the final four games of that year on injured reserve with a calf injury.

RB Ronnie Brown is tied for third in the AFC in both total touchdowns and rushing touchdowns with two. His total for both is tied for fourth in the NFL. Brown is 13th in the AFC with 100 rushing yards… Brown, Chris Chambers and Wes Welker all are tied for 14th in the AFC with nine receptions apiece. Brown’s total is third among AFC running backs. Chambers is 12th in the conference with 114 receiving yards while Welker is

tied for 13th with 108…. Welker leads the NFL with a 21.5-yard average on four punt returns, including a long of 47. He is seventh in the AFC with a 25.0-yard average on seven kickoff returns with a long of 39… DE Kevin Carter is tied for fifth in the AFC with two sacks. (Rankings do not include Monday night game of 9/18)

Since the merger of 1970, the Dolphins have fielded the top team in the NFL, and their record over this stretch proves this point. Over the last 36 years (1970-05), the Dolphins have put together a

regular season record of 347-204-2. This winning percentage of .629 is the best in the league over this span.

Of the 53 players currently on the Dolphins roster, 35 were with the Dolphins in some capacity for at least part of the 2005 season, either on the active roster or a reserve list or practice squad at the end of the year. The roster also includes six unrestricted free agents (CB Will Allen, from Giants; CB André Goodman, from Detroit; S Renaldo Hill, from Oakland; LB Keith Newman, from Minnesota; TE Justin Peelle, from San Diego; T L.J. Shelton, from Cleveland), six veteran free agents, two players via trade, one player through waivers and three draft choices. Of the 53 players, 21 have less than four years of NFL experience, including three rookies. The following is a breakdown of Miami’s 53-man roster by years of experience: 16 years-1, 14 years-1, 13 years-1, 12 years-1, 11 years-1, 10 years-2, 9

years-2, 8 years-4, 7 years-3, 6 years-8, 5 years-6, 4 years-2, 3 years-9, 2 years-8, first-year-1, rookies-3. HIGHER EDUCATION: Forty-four different colleges and universities are represented on the Dolphins’ current. Of that total, nine are represented by multiple Dolphins, including two apiece from Auburn, Florida, Kansas State, LSU, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oregon, Syracuse and Texas Tech. MY HOMETOWN: Dolphin players come from twenty-four different states. Of the 53 players currently on the team’s roster, the states which claim the most members of the team are Florida and Texas, from which seven Dolphins hail apiece. The next closest are Georgia and Michigan with five each.

DOLPHINS IN THE COMMUNITY: RANDY McMICHAEL FINDS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

For many athletes, especially those just beginning their professional careers, it can be difficult

sometimes to fully appreciate what a coach must go through on a daily basis. For Randy McMichael, that opportunity came sooner than later this past offseason when he coached a 10-12-year-old baseball team in the Cooper City (Fla.) Little League.

Although he did not have a son playing for the team, he agreed to coach because of his love for sports and the satisfaction he gets out of working with kids. Of course, he learned one important thing from coaching that would bring a smile to Dolphins Coach Nick Saban. “Coaches are always right,” proclaimed McMichael.

His competitiveness and passion for sports does not stop once he gets off the gridiron. He uses them as a guide in helping the community, specifically children.

Earlier this year, along with his wife Cawanna, he founded the Randy McMichael Foundation with the mission to promote programs that assist in the recreational and educational development of youth in South Florida and Middle Georgia. Already, McMichael has been very active this year, having hosted events such as a free football camp and family fun day in his hometown of Fort Valley, Georgia. He has also partnered with the Miami-Dade Police Athletic League and will be hosting several seminars to talk to the kids about careers in sports off the playing field. In addition, in 2006 he is part of the the Dolphins “All-Community Team,” in which he donates 20 tickets for every home game to children from the Miami-Dade Police Athletic League.

“This is basically an opportunity to give back and show the community that I do care,” McMichael said. “I’m not from Florida, but I feel like this is my home. I just want to give back to my home. I give back to my home in Georgia, but this is my home also. It’s unbelievable to be able to watch the kids grow.”

Every foundation needs its premiere event, and it is quite evident that McMichael is just as competitive when it comes to this endeavor as well. On Monday, September 18, South Florida bowlers tested their skills against Miami Dolphins players and alumni and other local celebrities as the foundation hosted its inaugural Celebrity Bowling Tournament, which took place at University Lanes in Davie. The night also included a live and silent auction featuring memorabilia, trips and other items.

“When you start a foundation, you want something to be your signature event, and Jason (Taylor) has ping-pong,” McMichael said. “I enjoy bowling and thought this would be a great event to hold, and each year, we’re going to have a new theme. This year is an 80’s theme, and next year, who knows. This is something my wife and I came up with.”

As the 27-year-old McMichael begins to enter his prime, he has set many goals for himself on and off the field.

“It’s been fun so far, but we’re just getting started,” he said. “I’m just looking for bigger and better things to get involved with. We have a lot of things in the works right now, so I’m excited.”

POSITION-BY-POSITION BREAKDOWN

DOLPHINS PAY TRIBUTE TO PAST WITH HONORARY CAPTAINS IN 2006 The past and present of Miami Dolphins football will come together at each home weekend during

the 2006 season. In an effort to pay tribute to the tradition-rich history of the franchise, Head Coach Nick Saban will pick alumni to serve as honorary team captains at each home game this season, the second straight year in which he has instituted this program.

The captains will attend several of the team functions the day prior to the game, including the walk-through. On gameday, they will accompany the game captains to midfield for the pre-game coin toss, and during the game, they will be the team’s special guests in a Dolphins Stadium suite.

“I’ve always believed the players I coach can learn a lot from the success of their predecessors, and that’s especially true here in Miami,” Saban said. “The Dolphins have established a rich tradition of success for more than 40 years, and it’s meaningful to pay tribute to some of the people who have made this organization one of the premier franchises in the NFL. It is important for our players to understand the history of this team, and to recognize the things that they did which made them as successful as they were. For our fans, I’m sure seeing many of the Dolphin greats from the past at each home game will bring back some fond memories.”

The honorary captains for Sunday’s game against Tennessee are DT Manny Fernandez (1968-75) and DE Bill Stanfill (1969-76).

JASON TAYLOR’S BIG PLAYS RAISE MONEY FOR SOUTH FLORIDA YOUTH

For the second year in a row, the success that Jason Taylor has on the football field in 2006 not only will help the Miami Dolphins won-loss record, but it also will benefit South Florida youth. Through the “Seminole Tribe of Florida Jason Taylor Sack Pack” program, Taylor will donate $1,000 for every sack or interception that he makes, and $100 for every tackle that he records to the Jason Taylor Foundation. The Foundation supports and creates programs which facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need, by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life. Sponsorships at various levels for this program are welcomed. For more information on the program, please visit the Foundation’s official web site at www.jasontaylorfoundation.org, or call (954) 424-0799. Through two games, $14,683 has been raised.
